Seated at the grand piano in MIT’s Killian Hall last fall, first-year student Jacqueline Wang played one piece of Mozart’s music. When she’d finished, Mi-Eun Kim, a pianist and lecturer at MIT, asked her to move to the back of the hall. Kim tapped at an iPad. Suddenly, the music Wang had just played poured forth again from the piano — its keys sinking and rising just as they had with Wang’s fingers on them. Wang stood with a confused expression, taking in a repeat of her own performance.
This unusual lesson took place during a three-week residency (驻留期) of the Steinway Spirio|r, a piano that obtains the data of live performances and offers students new possibilities for studying and experimenting with music.
Wang was one of several participants to have the experience of hearing herself play while watching the data of her performance move up and down across a screen: color-coded rectangles (矩形) indicating the speed and duration of each note, and a moving line charting her use of the damper pedal (阻尼踏板). Wang could even edit her own performance when Kim suggested her rhythmic use of the pedal might be unnecessary. Using the iPad interface to erase the pedaling entirely, they listened to the playback again, the notes gaining new clarity,
For Wang, the session introduced an element she’d never experienced since beginning her piano studies. The visual display of how long each key was played and with what speed gave her a more precise demonstration of the ideas of voicing and evenness.
Playing the piano is one of the most complex activities that humans do with their hands. Some people might think the new technology will replace the pianist. In Kim’s view, that human complexity is complemented by this kind of technical possibility. But it doesn’t mean all of the things that go into learning music will be abandoned. It’s going to be an invaluable third partner: the student, the teacher, and the Spirio|r. It’s going to play a necessary role in lots of musical efforts.
4. What happened after Jacqueline Wang finished her performance?
A. Her teacher played a piece of music to compete against her.
B. She got her performance reviewed on the Spirio|r.
C. She was asked to comment on her performance.
D. Her teacher instructed her to improve her skills.
5. What can we say about the new piano technology?
A. It is difficult to operate. B. It needs to be more intelligent.
C. It might reveal users’ privacy. D. It is beneficial for students’ learning.
6. What does the author intend to express in the last paragraph?
A. The music world is full of uncertainties.
B. Technology cannot replace human pianists.
C. There won’t be fiercer competition among pianists.
D. Pianists should be updated with the latest technology.
7. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Making Full Use of MIT’s Program
B. The Evolution of Musical Instruments
C. Exploring Music with the Steinway Spirio|r
D. The Challenges of Learning a New Instrument

Reunions offer a chance to reflect on how much has changed. One happened in Hollywood when Here premiered (首映), bringing together the actors, director and writer behind Forrest Gump 40 years later for a new film. The stars were “de-aged” using new AI tools, making them more youthful in some scenes and enabling the filmmakers to see the transformation in real time while shooting.
With the use of generative AI in film making come things worth watching. The first is how AI will be used to tell new types of stories, as storytelling becomes more personalised and interactive. No one is quite sure how the nature of storytelling will change, but it is sure to. David Thomson, a film historian, compares generative AI to the advent of sound. When movies were no longer silent, it changed the way plot points were made and how deeply viewers could connect with characters. Cristóbal Valenzuela, who runs a company providing AI-enhanced software, says AI is like a “new kind of camera”, offering a fresh “opportunity to reimagine what stories are like”. Both are right.
Another big development to watch is how AI will be used as a time-saving tool. Generative AI will automate and simplify complex tasks like film-editing and special effects. For a glimpse of the future, watch Everything Everywhere All at Once, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2023. It featured a scene that used a “rotoscoping” tool to edit out the green-screen background and make a talking rock more believable. It shortened into hours what might have otherwise taken days of video-editing.
What is also noticeable is more dramatic conflicts between creators and those running AI platforms. This year is likely to bring floods of lawsuits (诉讼) from authors, musicians and actors about how their works have been used to train AI systems without permission or payment. Perhaps they can agree on some sort of licensing arrangement, in which AI companies start paying copyright-holders.
It will probably be a few years before a full-length film is produced entirely by AI, but it is just a matter of time.
8. What can we learn about the film Here?
A. It relates a story about youth. B. The theme of the film is reunion.
C. AI tools are employed in the film. D. It is adapted from Forrest Gump.
9. What does David think of AI’s application in film making?
A. Transformative. B. Destructive. C. Representative. D. Irreplaceable.
10. Why does the author mention the film Everything Everywhere All at Once?
A. To show the high efficiency of AI tools. B. To demonstrate the influence of the film.
C. To analyse a novel way of video-editing. D. To praise the hard work behind the scenes.
11. What is the article mainly about?
A. Conflicts between man and machine. B. AI’s huge effects on film production.
C. Drawbacks of dependence on AI tools. D. Hot debate on the use of technology.

Want to learn a new language or get A’s in college exams? Previous studies have shown that exercise can help stimulate the areas of the brain that convert (转换) new information into long-term memory. A new study has taken this information one step further and found the best time when exercise can help maximize learning.
Building upon past research that found exercise releases biochemicals that improve mental function, scientists at Radboud University and the University of Edinburgh conducted a study to determine when exercise was most beneficial to learning.
Participants — 72 healthy male and female adults — were first asked to perform a computer test that challenged their visual and spatial learning. After the test, all of the subjects watched nature documentaries, but two-thirds of them also exercised. Half of the exercisers did circuit training on an exercise bike for 35 minutes immediately after the test. The other half did the same exercise but not until four hours after they had been tested.
Two days later, all of the participants returned to the lab for a recall test, and they were connected to MRI (磁共振成像) machines to assess their brain activity. The participants who exercised four hours after taking the computer test were able to recall what they had learned most accurately. Their brainwaves also showed more consistent levels of activity, indicating that their brains were less taxed to remember what they had learned.
According to this research, the best time to exercise to improve learning is four hours after studying. But why? That’s one question the researchers have yet to answer. Another question left unanswered is the level of exercise that might best improve learning. I’ve run enough marathons to prove the fact that my brain is anything but sharp during or after a tough workout. But the researchers noted that light workouts might not give the brain enough of a biochemical boost to improve learning.
12. What did the new study aim to explore?
A. When exercise is best for learning. B. What biochemicals are good for health.
C. How brainwaves should be measured. D. Which area of the brain is the most active.
13. What were all the participants asked to do during the experiment?
A. Train on bicycles. B. Do mathematics exercises.
C. Play computer games. D. Watch films about nature.
14. Why did the participants return to the lab two days later?
A. To do a medical examination. B. To have their memory tested.
C. To get their workouts recorded. D. To finish their previous tasks.
15 What might the author’s marathon running prove?
A. The findings of the study are reliable. B. Long-distance runners are often smart.
C. Studies on the marathon are not enough. D. Hard exercise may not sharpen the brain.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
It’s happened to all of us: a song comes on the radio, and we are immediately transported back to a time in our past. ____16____
There are a few things that connect tunes with our memories. Music is often a necessary element of many important life events, and it is also very effective in arresting our attention. ____17____ Besides, the emotional nature of music helps make it particularly memorable.
We often become familiar with a piece of music because we hear it as background music. The more familiar a piece of music is, the more effective it is in bringing back memories. ____18____ The reason is that we are far more likely to hear a song over and over again than to watch a film or a TV programme in the same way.
Tiffany Jenkins, writing for a culture column, has a different opinion: ____19____ She tells us how throughout history oral cultures have passed important knowledge from generation to generation through songs because of this characteristic. The rhythm (韵律) and rhyme in lines of songs all serve as memory aids.
____20____ This fact corresponds with what many experts call the “reminiscence bump (怀旧性记忆)”, where older adults (over forty) have increased recollection of events that occurred during their adolescence and early adulthood.
It’s clear that our memories and music are closely linked — to the point that music is being used to help Alzheimer’s disease sufferers access memories that they thought they had lost.
A. Familiarity is important.
B. Music itself is easy to remember.
C. But what makes music so effective in doing this?
D. Our musical preference usually forms during our teens.
E. This applies to music more than other cultural products.
F. Pop music especially can be connected with an important memory.
G. Music and these life events are likely to be linked together in our memories.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Grandma tried to straighten out her fingers. “Jessica, I think I am done knitting (编织),” she said. “My fingers just won’t do what I tell them any more.” I looked at Grandma’s hands, remembering that she had taught me how to knit gloves for my dolls since I was little and that her hands had been sure and strong whatever she had knitted. Grandma had always said that I was very good with her knitting needles and balls of yarn (纱线).
But this winter she could hardly bend her fingers. The doctor said Grandma had arthritis (关节炎), suggesting she should keep her hands warm. I made her cups of tea to hold and moved her chair closer to the fire. However, her fingers were still difficult to move.
I wasn’t used to seeing Grandma’s hands so still. In the morning, her hands were still in her lap. In the evening, her quiet hands even made her voice stay still. I tried to help her find her voice. “Grandma, tell me about when you were a little girl like before,” I begged, knowing she loved to tell interesting stories of her nine brothers and sisters and herself during their childhood. “That was so long ago, Jessica,” whispered Grandma. “I can barely remember.”
This winter there were no hats with matching gloves or soft sweaters knitted by Grandma. But I missed her voice more than those. What about her sister Olga giving their snowman a bath in hot water? What about her brother Peti cutting off her doll’s beautiful hair and then hiding it? Were those words still moving silently in her head?
After dinner, Grandma fell asleep in her rocking chair. Mom sorted through our knitting items, among which an old pair of gloves caught my attention. The gloves were Grandma’s favorite ones with the names of Grandma and her nine brothers and sisters on the fingertips. Each time she wore them, all her happy childhood memories would become very interesting stories in her mouth.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The gloves gave me an idea.

The gloves gave me an idea. I quietly put them in Grandma’s lap, waiting for her to wake up. It seemed that Grandma sensed what was happening and she opened her eyes. “Your family.” I said, softly touching her hands and handing the gloves to her. “Oh, Jessica. I almost forget them. Help me put them on.” Grandma’s eyes shone with excitement. The gloves had a magical effect on her and brought back all her childhood memories. The whole house was full of our laughter. “Grandma’s happy voice has come back, and how about our knitting?” I wanted to have a try.
“Grandma, shall we knit a new pair of gloves?” I asked hopefully. There was a longing look on Grandma’s face. She paused for a second and then smiled, “Why not? My fingers can’t do what I tell them but yours can.” Happily picking up her knitting needles and a ball of yarn, I began to knit carefully, not only knitting a new pair of gloves, but also knitting a happy family. Seeing Grandma slowly moving her fingers back and forth inside the old gloves as she taught me, I had no idea whether her hands would recover, but I did believe our happy moments would be always there.
