Pop Mart: The Mystery Behind Blind Boxes
In the past decade, Pop Mart has revolutionized toy collecting through its innovative blind box concept. These small, sealed packages containing random collectible figures have created a global craze, particularly among teenagers and young adults.
The Blind Box Phenomenon
Standard blind boxes are priced at ¥59-69 ( $8-10 ) in China, while international markets see higher prices—up to $15 in the US and £12 in the UK. The excitement comes from not knowing which of the 12 possible figures you’ll get, with rare “hidden” versions appearing only once in every 144 boxes. This system has proven incredibly successful, with Pop Mart’s 2024 revenue reaching ¥13 billion ( $1.8 billion ).
Global Expansion Challenges
As Pop Mart expanded to over 30 countries, problems emerged. In London, a limited-edition Labubu release caused such crowding that police were called. Meanwhile, fake versions of popular figures flooded markets in Southeast Asia, selling for half the price but with poor quality.
Membership Benefits
To maintain customer loyalty, Pop Mart offers:
* 1 membership point per ¥1 spent
* Early access to new releases for Gold members ( ¥5,000+ annual spending )
* Increased chances ( from 1/144 to 1/72 ) of finding hidden figures when buying full sets
21. What makes blind boxes particularly attractive for buyers?
A. Their low cost. B. Their large size.
C. Their mysterious content. D. Their educational value.
22. What special benefit do Gold members receive?
A. Unlimited returns. B. Rare hidden figures.
C. More membership points. D. Early purchase opportunities.
23. Which of the following is true about Pop Mart?
A. Blind boxes of Pop Mart are all sold at fixed prices.
B. Pop Mart has changed the market with its innovation.
C. Pop Mart has gained great popularity among all ages.
D. Fake Labubu attracted the attention of London police.

Sophie had always admired her grandmother’s garden. Every summer, the small backyard burst with colors — roses, tomatoes, peppers, and herbs growing in neat rows. To Sophie, it seemed like magic. But she never imagined herself doing the same. Gardening looked like hard, dirty work, and she preferred spending her free time indoors with books and music.
That changed when her grandmother injured her knee one spring and asked Sophie to help with the planting. “Just for a few weeks,” she promised. Sophie agreed, though she doubted if she would enjoy it.
The first day was awkward. Sophie dug holes too deep, watered plants too much, and mistook young weeds for vegetable seedlings (幼苗) . But her grandmother never lost patience. She guided Sophie gently, her wrinkled hands showing the girl how to press seeds into the soil with the right touch. “Plants don’t need perfection,” she said. “They need attention and time.”
Gradually, Sophie found herself drawn into the garden’s slow rhythm. She learned to notice the subtle changes — a new bud (花蕾) opening, the way tomato leaves curled when thirsty. The work was physical and sometimes tiring, but it cleared her mind in a way that books and music never quite had. There was something deeply satisfying about caring for a living thing from seed to harvest. By midsummer, Sophie was harvesting vegetables for family dinners. She felt quite proud as her parents praised the salads made from her lettuce and tomatoes. More importantly, she discovered a side of herself she hadn’t known existed: patient, attentive, and capable of making things grow.
The garden taught Sophie that meaningful things take time and effort. That lesson followed her beyond the backyard. She found herself applying the same steady patience to her schoolwork and other challenges. What began as a simple favor had grown into something far more valuable — a new understanding of herself.
24. Why did Sophie start helping in the garden?
A. She was eager to be skilled at gardening.
B. Her grandmother needed aid due to an injury.
C. She had been tired of staying indoors all day.
D. Her parents wanted her to experience garden tasks.
25. Which words best describe Sophie’s grandmother as a teacher?
A. Patient and encouraging. B. Cheerful and outgoing.
C. Talkative and humorous. D. Energetic and adventurous.
26. How did Sophie feel after spending more time in the garden?
A. She realized she preferred planting flowers.
B. She mainly looked forward to the final harvest.
C. She found it boring and wanted to stop quickly.
D. She became interested and her mind felt refreshed.
27. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Everyone should learn gardening as a practical skill.
B. Helping family members can build stronger family bonds.
C. A new attempt can bring personal growth and self-discovery.
D. Engaging in outdoor physical activities is more rewarding.
C
Trees that talk back might sound like something fresh out of a dreamlike trip, but a high-tech initiative aimed at bridging the divide between youth culture and nature has turned fantasy into reality. Specifically, London-based agency Droga5 came up with the campaign for the creative activity, Agency for Nature, giving voice to trees in London, Dublin and Austin, Texas.
To achieve this “talking” function, bioelectrical signals from each tree were transformed into speech through an AI large language model. It was fed insights about the trees’ lifespans and histories, alongside data from biosensors that record metrics (指标) such as wind speed, temperature and soil moisture (湿度). Additionally, the AI acted as the “brain” of the trees, shaping their unique personalities and enabling real-time conversations with more than 100 people — with sometimes touching results. For example, “Your care warms me,” a 50-year-old oak (橡树) told Austin mayor Steve Adler, who asked how he might improve its life. “More stable temperatures and consistent moisture would help. Thank you for asking,” the tree replied.
When discussing the purpose of the campaign, Evan Greally from Droga5 explained, “My hope was to make people care again, to bring out some care for something bigger than ourselves.”
Looking to the future, plans are in progress, but under wraps for now, to give voice to more trees. In the meantime, the team said the AI application could one day be used by farmers to chat with their crops, or to predict wildfires by talking to forests. Commenting on the tool’s potential, Greally’s colleague Chip McCoy added, “There’s an element of endless possibility to it. We have this tool, and it’s in the hands of everybody how we use it for the better.”
28. How does the AI system give trees “voices”?
A. By planting devices in tree trunks. B. By reproducing tree sounds from forests.
C. By translating biological data into speech. D. By recording human conversations nearby.
29. What message does the campaign convey about nature?
A. Nature should be understood with feeling. B. Trees will control future city development.
C. Technology can completely explain nature. D. City expansion damages tree development.
30. What future application is mentioned for the AI tool?
A. Producing tree recorders. B. Predicting natural disasters.
C. Designing urban green spaces. D. Creating tree-based social media.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards the talking trees project?
A. Doubtful. B. Critical. C. Indifferent. D. Enthusiastic.

More than 50% of a scientist’s productivity results from the institution where they work, according to a new study that tracked the publications of researchers as they moved during their career. The findings support a long-running debate over whether to prevent limited grant (拨款) from being concentrated at a handful of big-name universities.
The study illustrates a phenomenon familiar to many academics. Picking someone up and moving them to a more productive place will make them more productive. The new study collected data from about 300,000 U. S. -based scientists who published between 1945 and 2023. When a researcher moved from a less productive institution to one with higher average productivity, they became more productive as well, according to a “wandering scholar” analysis. The team notes that it could be something about resources, facilities and graduate students that led to productivity gains. A previous study supports that: Faculty (教职人员) at top U. S. universities who work in fields where cooperation and co-authorship are normal were more productive because they led larger lab groups, researchers reported in a 2022 paper. “It’s this labor that increases faculty productivity,” says Aaron Clauset, a computer scientist and senior author on the 2022 study.
The study also supports a decades-long policy discussion about how to distribute government grant money, showing the benefits of favoring the top institutions. Some argue against further enriching highly productive institutions. “Those institutions are in a position to make more productive faculty because they’ve received abundant research support over decades. Distributing resources to them disproportionately (不成比例地) would reflect the historical inequities that have created differences,” says Kirk Dombrowski from a nonprofit that promotes science in poorly funded states.
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has long-running programs that reserve a part of their budget for projects in states having the least funding through traditional funding tracks. It’s vital that government investments are geographically dispersed, as additional funding could help locally produced researchers and result in work that solves regional problems.
32. What does the new study find?
A. Researchers often move for higher pay. B. Career success is defined by publications.
C. Scientists’ productivity relies on institutions. D. Most grants flow to well-known universities.
33. What can contribute to academic productivity according to the 2022 study?
A. High salaries and job security. B. Strict publication requirements.
C. Frequent international conferences. D. Large lab groups and cooperation.
34. What’s the significance of the work of NSF?
A. It strengthens international cooperation. B. It supports poorly funded states’ research.
C. It helps locally distinguished institutions. D. It reduces the workload of local institutes.
35. What does the underlined word “dispersed” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Widespread. B. Diverse. C. Restricted. D. Practical.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Many of us face a tricky trap on social media: either chase endless likes with constant posting or escape by ignoring it all. We stress over this forced choice — approval or isolation — as if they can’t mix. ____36____ Here are three practical ways to find balance in the digital world.
Focus on genuine connections.
Likes and comments bring short-term excitement, but they fade fast. True connections matter more. When you share real stories or chat deeply with others, you feel warm inside. ____37____ So pick activities that make you feel truly good, like talking about hobbies or helping friends online — no need to care about likes!
____38____
Peace on social media starts with how you see it. Mindful browsing (浏览) means noticing nice things — an inspiring post, a friend’s good news — without comparing yourself. The colors of a photo or a kind word can make you smile. You don’t need big tricks. ____39____ Then you’ll enjoy both: staying connected and feeling peaceful.
Celebrate small digital joys.
Every little win online — sharing a useful tip, getting a sweet reply — deserves cheers. If you only wait for lots of followers, you’ll miss daily fun. Minor accomplishments in the digital world lift your mood. For example, celebrate finishing a post you care about, not just hitting a follower goal. Treat yourself to a snack after a nice chat. ____40____
A. Try browsing with intention.
B. Chasing likes will make you tired.
C. These turn online time into a joyful journey.
D. Just fix your attention on the little joys online.
E. In fact, mixing work and rest online helps you stay balanced.
F. But our time online doesn’t have to be stuck in this dilemma.
G. That cozy feeling from within doesn’t depend on likes or comments.

May had just finished gluing two eyes onto her new craft (手工艺品) when Mom walked into her room. “Wow, an impressive Chinese dragon! Will that be keeping you company tomorrow?” Mom asked with a smile. May’s stomach tightened. Tomorrow was her first day at a new school. Her family had just moved from China to this new country over the summer.
Seeing the worry on May’s face, Mom added, “New-school nerves, right? I bet you’ll make all kinds of friends just by being you.” She kissed the top of May’s head before leaving the room. As May packed her backpack, she thought about Mom’s words. She hoped Mom was right.
The next morning, she decided to bring Longlong, her handmade Chinese dragon, to school. Throughout the morning, it helped to know Longlong was nearby. May found the courage to get through hellos and small talks without turning bright red.
Everything was going fine—until she checked her bag after the break. Longlong was missing! Her confidence disappeared. And now it was lunchtime. How could she face a room full of kids she didn’t know? As her class lined up outside the lunchroom, May busied herself by reading the posters on the wall. One caught her eye:
Want to Join an After School Club?
Sign up by Friday!
Chess, Math, Cooking, Drama, Kickball…
OR
See Mrs. Miller in Room 301, Teaching Building B with New Ideas!
Mom had told May clubs could be a way to make friends with kids who shared her interests. But none of these clubs seemed quite right.
Just then, a voice called, “Hey, you! In the red shirt!” May turned. A girl walked up and handed her Longlong, saying it had fallen from her backpack. She introduced herself as Olivia, a student from Mrs. Miller’s class. May thanked her and felt braver as she held Longlong again. When Olivia learned that May had made it herself, she said she also liked crafts and asked if May could teach her.

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

* 1 membership point per ¥1 spent
* Early access to new releases for Gold members ( ¥5,000+ annual spending )
* Increased chances ( from 1/144 to 1/72 ) of finding hidden figures when buying full sets
21. What makes blind boxes particularly attractive for buyers?
A. Their low cost. B. Their large size.
C. Their mysterious content. D. Their educational value.
22. What special benefit do Gold members receive?
A. Unlimited returns. B. Rare hidden figures.
C. More membership points. D. Early purchase opportunities.
23. Which of the following is true about Pop Mart?

【答案】24. B 25. A 26. D 27.

【答案】28. C 29. A 30. B 31. D

A. Widespread. B. Diverse. C. Restricted. D. Practical.
【答案】32. C 33. D 34. B 35. A

【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“A previous study supports that: Faculty (教职人员) at top U. S. universities who work in fields where cooperation and co-authorship are normal were more productive because they led larger lab groups, researchers reported in a 2022 paper.(一项先前的研究表明:2022年发表的一篇论文中,研究人员报告称,美国顶尖大学中从事合作与合著较为普遍的教职人员,因其领导更大的实验室团队,工作效率更高)”可知,大规模的实验室小组和合作可以提高学术生产力。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The National Science Foundation (NSF) has long-running programs that reserve a part of their budget for projects in states having the least funding through traditional funding tracks.(美国国家科学基金会(NSF)设有长期项目,其预算中的一部分专门用于资助那些通过传统资金渠道获得资助最少的州的项目)”可知,NSF长期致力于帮助通过传统资金渠道得到资金最少的州,这些额外的资助不仅能支持当地培养研究人员,还能推动解决区域性问题的研究工作。
【答案】36. F 37. G 38. A 39. D 40. C
【解析】
【导语】文章主要介绍了如何在社交媒体中避免陷入追求点赞或自我孤立的两难困境,并提供了三个实用的方法来在数字世界中找到平衡。
【36题详解】
根据前文“We stress over this forced choice — approval or isolation — as if they can’t mix.(我们在这种被迫的选择——认可或孤立——中感到压力,仿佛它们无法融合。)”以及后文“Here are three practical ways to find balance in the digital world.(这里有三种在数字世界中找到平衡的实用方法。)”
根据前文“When you share real stories or chat deeply with others, you feel warm inside.(当你分享真实的故事或与他人深入交谈时,你会感到内心温暖。)”以及后文“So pick activities that make you feel truly good, like talking about hobbies or helping friends online — no need to care about likes!(所以选择那些让你感觉真正好的活动,比如在网上谈论爱好或帮助朋友——不需要关心点赞!)”
根据空后的“Peace on social media starts with how you see it. Mindful browsing (浏览) means noticing nice things — an inspiring post, a friend’s good news — without comparing yourself.( 在社交媒体上获得内心的平和,始于你看待它的心态。有意识地浏览,指的是留意那些美好的事物 —— 一篇鼓舞人心的动态、朋友传来的喜讯,而不去和他人攀比。)”可知,本段主要讲述要有意识地、带着目的去浏览社交媒体,A选项“Try browsing with intention.(尝试有目的地浏览。)”能概括本段主题,适合作本段小标题。
【39题详解】
根据前文“You don’t need big tricks.(你不需要什么大技巧。)”以及后文“Then you’ll enjoy both: staying connected and feeling peaceful.(然后你就能同时享受这两者:保持联系并感到平静。)”
根据前文“Treat yourself to a snack after a nice chat.(在一次愉快的聊天后,请自己吃点零食。)”可知,前文列举了庆祝数字世界中微小快乐的具体行为,C选项“These turn online time into a joyful journey.(这些将上网时间变成了一段快乐的旅程。)”中的“These”指代前文提到的“celebrate finishing a post”和“Treat yourself to a snack”等行为,作为本段的总结句,符合语境。

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
“Sure! Want to meet here after school?” May asked.

May got a new idea and she decided o have a talk with Mrs. Miller.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】“Sure! Want to meet here after school?” May asked. Olivia’s face lit up with excitement. “That would be awesome!” she replied. The two girls started chatting animatedly about all the craft ideas they had, like making friendship bracelets and paper lanterns. As they talked, May felt a sense of ease she hadn't felt all day. When the line started moving into the lunchroom, they sat together, still engrossed in their conversation about crafts.
May got a new idea and she decided to have a talk with Mrs. Miller. After lunch, she made her way to Room 301 in Teaching Building B. She walked in nervously but when she saw Mrs. Miller’s warm smile, her courage grew. May explained her love for crafts and how she hoped to start a craft club. Mrs. Miller was delighted and said it was a wonderful idea. With Mrs. Miller’s support, May couldn't wait to tell Olivia and start their very own craft club, looking forward to making more friends who shared their passion.
