An Exciting Environmental Knowledge Contest
Last week, our school held an exciting environmental knowledge contest, which attracted numerous
participants from different grades. The contest consisted of various challenging questions related to
environmental protection, testing students'awareness and understanding of eco-friendly practices.
The atmosphere was tense yet lively as students eagerly answered the questions. It was heartening to
see everyone so engaged and passionate about the environment.Personally,I found the contest extremely
educational and inspiring. It not only broadened my knowledge but also reminded me of the importance of
preserving our planet.Such events should be held regularly to enhance our environmental awareness.
第二节(满分25分)【参考范文】
"She stole my purse! So much for acts of kindness,"I thought.Meanwhile, the guy on the motorcycle
stayed close and even tried to get in front of me,signaling for me to stop.Out of the corner of my eye,I
noticed a purse on the floor of my car.Yes,there was a purse, but it wasn't mine. Then I saw the guy right
outside my window, waving my purse!I couldn't believe my eyes.I pulled over to the curb, and the young
man stopped his motorcycle by the passenger side.Through the window I had opened,he handed me my
purse."Grandma sent me to give you this. She picked it up by mistake. She is so sorry."He was still
smiling.This time,his smile didn't appear threatening,simply gracious.
I was speechless as I handed him his grandma's purse.Then he took off.After retrieving a few dollars,I
waved for the young man to stop, hoping to reward him,but he had disappeared into the night.I did manage
to yell,"Thank you!"I had assumed he was a criminal because he looked"wild,"but he was really an angel
who went out of his way to help a stranger.Sometimes,we misjudge a person's character because they
don't conform to what we believe is proper. They may not drive a stylish car, live on the"right"side of
town,or dress in what we consider to be fashionable, but who's to say they are not equal to or better than
we are?

Text 10
Let's take a moment to talk about something that affects all of us-waste and its impact on our
planet. In 2018,the EPA reported that the United States generated 292.4 million tons of solid waste-
about 4.9 pounds per person per day.
Globally, the UN projected that solid waste generation would grow from about 2.I billion tons in 2023
to about 3.8 billion tons per year by 2050.In their 2024 Global Waste Management Outlook report, they
stated that uncontrolled waste knows no national borders. It is carried by waterways across and between
countries.Pollution from waste is associated with a range of negative health and environmental effects.
many of which will last for generations.
In other words, the waste crisis affects all of us.It's also tied to the three major crises of biodiversity
loss, climate change, and pollution. While addressing such a massive problem may feel unmanageable,
reducing your personal footprint doesn't require perfection-just progress.
Whether you're taking up more sustainable habits or purchasing more environmentally friendly
products,every small change counts.

Apply and Fly-Fly-in Programs for College Visits
College fly-in programs are opportunities for high school students to visit colleges over the course of

You should apply if you really want to go to that college or if you're not quite sure what living there

time could be better spent on your college applications and internships().
Timeline and Tips:

In 2010,Brad Montague leamed that a West Tennessee homeless shelter had a desperate need for
socks,an item often overlooked because used pairs are usually too worn to donate.Without fresh socks,
unhoused people easily develop frostbite.Determined to find a solution,Montague took the problem to a
dozen teens at the middle school in Henderson,Tennessee, where he volunteered.Together they invented
"Socktober",a simple call for the commounity to donate new socks every October. The first drive ended
with more socks than Montague's car could hold, and hand-delivering them while greeting recipients with
"Happy Socktober!"became,he recalled,"an uplifting and emotional experience."
Montague posted the results on social media. In 2013,he reinforced (the idea with a "Kid
President"web episode-written and directed by Montague--and urged viewers to start local sock drives.

The clip (H)went viral, and participation exploded.Almost fifteen years later,Socktober is held
annually in every U.S.state and in Canada,Australia, and India.Montague estimates "millions"of new
pairs have been donated, stressing that"anyone can do it,"since socks are inexpensive, universally needed,
and easy to share.
To sustain the movement,Montague's website targets nearby shelters and offers step-by-step tips for
successful drives.Schools have become the engine of the tradition.Special-education teacher Rachel
Taylor at Elmore Park Middle in Bartlett,Tennessee, has guided students to give roughly 10,000 pairs
over the past eight years, calling Socktober "so much more than just socks-it's love, generosity, and
joy."Eleven-year-old fifth-grader Anderson Brown agrees:"We should show that we care about
everybody,no matter what."
Reflecting on the movement's quiet power,Montague says,"There are challenges and darkness in the

Anyone who has taken a standardized test knows that writing an essay in 20 minutes or less takes
serious brain power.Having access to artificial intelligence(AI)would certainly lighten the mental load.
But as a recent study by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)suggests, that
help may come at a cost.
Over the course of a series of essay-writing sessions, students working with as well as without an AI
chatbot had their brain activity measured.Across the board, the AI users exhibited markedly lower brain
activity in areas associated with creative functions and attention.
Whether AI will leave people's brains weak in the long term remains an open question.Researchers
behind this study have stressed that further work is needed to establish a definitive causal link between
elevated AI use and weakened brains. After all,the study had a tiny sample size and focused on a single
narrow task.
Moreover,generative-Al tools clearly seek to lighten people's mental loads,as many other
technologies do.Concerns about this kind of offloading aren't new.As long ago as the 5th century BC,
Socrates was quoted as complaining that writing is not "a potion()for remembering, but for
reminding".Calculators spare cashiers from computing a bill.Navigation apps remove the need for
map-reading.And yet few would argue that people are less capable as a result.
There is little evidence to suggest that letting machines handle users'mental tasks alters the brain's
capacity for thinking. But the worry is that generative Al allows one to offload a thought process. And

once the brain has developed a taste for offloading,it can be a hard habit to kick.As one user put it,"I
rely so much on AI that I don't think I'd know how to solve certain problems without it."
The technology is so young that, for many tasks, the human brain is still the sharpest tool in the
toolkit Bu:in time both the consumers of AI and its regulators will have to assess whether its wider
benefits ourweigh any cognitive (costs. If stronger evidence emerges that AI makes people less
intelligent,will they care?
28.What docs paragraph 3 emphasize about the MIT study?
A.The procedures it followed.
B.The limitations in its design
C.The conclusion it has drawn.
D.The diversity among its participants.
29.According to Socrates, what negative consequence could writing have?
A.People would avoid using reminders.
B.People would stop thinking independently.
C.Pcoplc would rely less on their own memory.D.People would care less about the spoken word.
30.What point does the user's remark in paragraph 5 illustrate?
A.Al can change user'mental capacity.
B.Ai is not widely available to the public.
C.Al can encourage users'mental iaziness.
D.AI is not capable of solving every problem.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Will AI Make You Stupid?
B.How AI Lets You Offload Tasks?
C.Why A!Affects Your Thinking Abilities?
D.Is AI a Mental Shorteut You Can Easily Quit?

Over the past twenty years, more than one fifth of the world's oceans have gotten darker, according
to a study from the University of Plymouth. This is called "ocean darkening."It happens when changes at
the top of the ocean make it harder for sunlight to reach deeper waters.
The study, which was published in the joural Global Change Biology, found that 21%of the
world's oceans became darker between 2003 and 2022.The research team thinks this darkening is due to
changes in algae, changes in sea surface temperatures, and artificial light.
The study showed that more than 9%of the ocean-an area about the size of Africa-has less light
by over 50 meters (164 feet).Another 2.6%of the ocean has light reduced by over 100 meters(328 feet).
While the full impacts are unclear, the team notes this could harm marine life and ecosystem services.
Dr.Thomas Davies, lead researcher of the study, said:"Previous research has shown that the color
of the ocean's surface has changed over the last twenty years, maybe because of changes in tiny sea
creatures called plankton(浮游生物).But our study shows these changes cause widespread darkening,
making less ocean available to animals dependent on sunlight and moonlight to live and reproduce."Dr.
Davies also said that ocean darkening could affect the air we breathe, the fish we eat,and how well we
can fight climate change."Our findings are truly disquieting."he said.
Prof.Tim Smyth, who works at the Plymouth Marine Laboratory, said that some sea animals that
need light might come closer to the surface because of these changes. This could lead to more
competition for food and other resources. He also warned,"It could cause big changes in the whole
marine ecosysr1.”
32.What is ocean darkening caused by according to the research?
A Increased deep-sea human activities.
B.Algcc,sea temperature,and artificial light changes.
C.Expansion of marine species populations.
D.Reduced coastal artificial light.

In the heavy summer heat,I watched an elderly woman struggle with a walker, weighed down with
bags of groceries.Slowing down,I opened the window and called out,"Need a ride?Let me help you
with your groceries."
Getting out of the car,I placed her walker and bags into my trunk."Bless you, child,"she said.We
were off.She directed me to go south. It seemed too far for her to walk. She explained that she usually
took a bus but had missed the last one.She worked as a bagger at the nearby grocery store.
We chatted as if we'd known each other for years. Her name was Ida.She had grandchildren.
Suddenly,I realized we were on the "wrong side of town".It was starting to get dark, and I began to
feel uneasy. We continued down unfamiliar streets until she finally pointed to an old apartment building
where she lived.Several young men in their early twenties had gathered around the entrance. They were
smoking something and appeared threatening. Some were on motorcycles, and one, wearing a
hoodie()over his bushy,long hair,was staring at me intently-too intently-and smiling.
I was getting more and more uncomfortable, but Ida seemed fine.I stopped the car.Ida directed a
couple of the guys to help with her groceries. She thanked me,and I drove away as fast as I could.
Suddenly I heard the roar of a motorcycle behind me.I recognized the biker from the apartment
house-the one with the hoodie and bushy hair who kept smiling at me.He didn't pass me but
continued to drive at the same speed as me.I realized he was waving for me to stop.
It would soon be getting dark.No way was I going to stop for a suspicious stranger on a deserted
street. In a panic,I reached down for my purse to grab my cell phone.I had to call 911.But my purse
