二、综合模拟演练01
In 1945, a 12-year-old boy saw a beautiful brooch (胸针)in a shop window that set his heart racing. But the price—five dollars—was too high for Reuben Earle. Five dollars would buy almost a week's food for his family.
Reuben couldn’t ask his father for the money. Everything his father made through fishing went to his mother, Dora. Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home and the glue that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to feed and clothe their five children, but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.
Nevertheless, he opened the shop's door and went inside. Standing proudly and straight in his flour-sack (面粉袋改做的)shirt and washed-out trousers, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “But I don't have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time?”
"I'll try,” the shopkeeper smiled. "People around here don't usually have that kind of money to spend on things. It should keep for a while."
Reuben respectfully touched his worn cap and walked out. He would raise the money and not tell anybody, for he thought Mum would get surprised when she saw that brooch. On hearing the sound of hammering (捶打)from a side street, Reuben suddenly had an idea that he could raise money by selling the used nail bags. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails bought in bags from a local factory. Sometimes the used bags were thrown away at the construction site, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece. That day he sold two nail bags and hid the money in a rusty soda tin.

Slim and beautiful, she was the center of the home and the glue that held it together. The housework was never-ending, and she struggled to feed and clothe their five children, but she was happy as her family and their well-being were all she cared about.
如果结尾只是说妈妈很开心,就非常遗憾了,还必须和这个描写照应:对生活的乐观 和对孩子的热爱。
妈妈的开心:Wearing the beautiful brooch and knowing the story behind it, Dora was too overjoyed to utter a word.
妈妈的疼爱:She just threw her arms tightly around her beloved son.
对话: “Merry Christmas, mom", the son announced proudly. "You too." the proud mother echoed.
主题升华:Well, no dream is out of reach for a willing heart.

But the fire wasn’t enough to sustain the attention of two young boys. “Maybe,” Grandpa remarked, carefully considering the situation. “we could do something I used to do as a boy. Let’s go camping.”
My brothers and I looked at each other in amazement.
”Get your sleeping bags, pillows and stuffed animals, and meet me back here.“
It took us only minutes to gather our sleeping gear. When we returned Grandpa had rearranged the furniture, clearing an open space in front of the fire. in short order, we had a fine campground.
“Now then” Grandpa began, unfolding a strange looking game board, “who’s up for a little game of checkers?” “What are checkers?” my brother and I asked.
“Never played, eh? Well. it’s time you boys learned,” Grandpa said.
For the next hour or so. Grandpa coached us on the fine art of playing checkers. I became a fair player after losing four games in a row. Then I defeated Grandpa. When I asked him if he’d let me win, he merely winked (眨眼 and set the board up for the next game Afterward. Grandpa used his old guitar to sing us some campfire songs to which we sing along.
Then suddenly, the power came back on. Mom and Dad gave a cheer, but for my brother and me, it was the end of a grand adventure. This wasn’t how we wanted the night to end.

Grandpa looked at us smiled and then slowly stood up. He walked across the room to the light switch and turned it off. “Oops, it looks like another power outage, boys. Better sit down for the night. It is going to be a long one” And with that, our camping journey continued. We played another game or two of checkers in the flickering light of the fireplace before bedding down. And then was Grandpa right there with us, stretched out on the couch, his legs hanging over the edge.
The next morning everything returned to normal: lights, television and heat. Bat my brother and I never forgot that special day. We were always grateful for the experience and played many a game of checkers in the years to come. But, most of all, we wen grateful to Grandp, who had known how to transform a cold and dark day in Kansas into something memorable and magical.

Sports are important in our family. Both of our sons were high-school athletes in our town of Verden. So I shouldn’t have been surprised when Lauren announced she was going out for the girls’ basketball team. But I was. At just five feet, one inch tall, our daughter’s lack of height wasn’t my worry. She has Down syndrome (唐氏综合症).
My wife and I never told Lauren that she was different. We treated her like our other children. We didn’t want her to feel disabled or different because she had Down syndrome.
“I’m gonna play basketball, Daddy.” Lauren ran to meet me when I came in from work. She flew into my arms and lingered long in my embrace. Unlike some sixteen-year-olds, Lauren was outwardly affectionate (亲切的).
“That’s nice, honey,” I replied automatically, and patted her shoulder. Walking into the kitchen, I kissed my wife Laura on the cheek. Laura spoke slowly, her tone steady. “What Lauren’s trying to tell you is that she’s joining the girls’ high-school basketball team.”
Just as my wife’s words sunk in, I heard Lauren behind me.
“I’m gonna be a Lady Tiger,” she whooped, skipping into the room and throwing her arms in the air. She raced out of the kitchen to one of her favorite activities, watching cartoons on television. Everything that could happen flashed through my mind. What should we do? Parenting seldom had clear-cut answers, and bringing up a child with a disability was an additional challenge.
Mid-November, the season’s first basketball game arrived. I settled into a seat on the second row with the rest of my family. Before the game, cheerleaders (啦啦队) were running on the court, dancing and jumping. The game got off to a good start, but soon Verden was behind. Even after a rally (反弹) in the second half, I knew the Lady Tigers were certain to lose. Just less than two minutes were left, and Verden was down by seventeen points. Coach called a time-out. The announcer’s voice echoed over the public-address system. “Number thirty-three, Lauren Wray, in for the Lady Tigers.” My heart pounding, I watched wide-eyed. Lauren was in the game.

Lauren kept pace with the others fairly well. She was struggling to gain an opportunity to score. However, the opposing team scored again. With less than a minute left, the Lady Tigers were near their goal. I saw the coach shout and flash a signal to her teammates. Then something I consider sacred happened on the court. They passed Lauren the ball. She caught it and moved toward the goal. Lauren went in for a layup. Amazingly, the opposing team did not block her. She shot. She scored!
Applause exploded and the thunderous sounds echoed on the court. “Lauren, Lauren, Lauren,” shouted the cheerleaders. Instead of reacting to the noisy crowd, my daughter kept her head in the game. The final buzzer sounded. Verden lost by seventeen points. A few minutes later, Lauren joined us in the stands. “Did you see? I scored!” Her brown eyes shone as she wiped sweat from her forehead. “I made a basket!” I wrapped my arms around her and hugged her tight. Lauren was different. My daughter wasn't like everyone else. And I was glad.

It was Sunday. I had one last patient to see.
I approached her room in a hurry and stood at the doorway. She was an older woman, sitting on the edge of the bed, struggling to put socks on her swollen feet.
I crossed the threshold(门口), spoke quickly to the nurse, and scanned her chart, noting she was in stable condition. I was almost in the clear.
I leaned on the bed rail looking down at her. She asked if I could help put on her socks. I thought I had other priorities on the list. It’s my responsibility to arrange the issue. So instead, I launched into a monologue(独白)that went something like this: “How are you feeling? Your sugars and blood pressure were high but they’re better today. The nurse mentioned you’re anxious to see your son who’s visiting you today. It’s nice to have family visit from far away. I bet you really look forward to seeing him.”
She stopped me in a serious, authoritative voice. “Sit down, doctor. This is my story, not your story.”
I was surprised and embarrassed. I sat down. I helped her with the socks. She began to tell me that her only son lived around the corner from her, but she had not seen him in five years. She believed that the stress of this contributed greatly to her health problems. After hearing her story and putting on her socks, I asked if there was anything else I could do for her. She shook her head no and smiled. All she wanted me to do was to listen.
And, not long after, in an unexpected twist, I became the patient, with a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis at age 31. Now, 20 years later, I sit all the time --- in a wheelchair. For as long as I could, I continued to see patients from my chair.

I gradually realize the patients’ stories are a bond between the teller and the listener. Each story is different. Some are detailed; others are vague. Some have a beginning, middle and end. Others wander without a clear conclusion. Some are true; others not. Yet all those things do not really matter. What matters to the storyteller is that the story is heard—without interruption, assumption or judgement. I always reminded myself of the importance of stop-ping, sitting down and truly listening.
When my condition affected my hands, I resigned and began to teach medical students. Now I could view the whole from the perspective of physician and patient. I tell them I believe in the power of listening. I tell them I know first hand that immeasurable healing takes place within me when someone stops, sits down and listens to my story. Listening to someone’s story costs less than expensive diagnostic testing but is key to healing and diagnosis.

Catherine was the coolest kid in her class. Whenever she went, she was in the spotlight, with a bunch of kids following her and doing everything she did.
Her desk mate,Landy, however, was not in the cool kids’ group.Being the tallest kid in her class, she was teased by her classmates, who were always chanting “Landy,Landy, long as spaghetti (意大利面)”.Every time Landy heard those silly chants, she could feel her face burst into flames. God knew how she wished the ground to crack and swallow her!
Catherine didn’t really like it when the kids chanted “Landy,Landy, long as spaghetti”.But she never told them to stop either, and nor did she ever talk to her. She liked being popular.
One weekend, Catherine went over to her grandfather for Thanksgiving. Her grandfather lives on a farm at the opposite end of town, where he keeps chickens. While helping to feed the chickens, Catherine noticed a peculiar one. Curling in the corner,it looked smaller than the others and was almost half-bare!
“What’s the matter with it?”She asked her grandfather, with a puzzled frown on her face. Her grandfather told her how chickens could act.’“They have a pecking(啄) order,” he explained, wrinkles of concern spreading around his forehead.“If one chicken is different, the others will push it away and keep pecking it. Sometimes they peck it so much that it dies.”
“Oh,what a poor little thing!”Catherine let out a sigh as she scooped(捧起)the frightened chicken up in her arms, whose heart was beating fast in the bony little body.

Suddenly, she thought of Landy, the girl being “pecked” by her classmates.“ I’m going to take it home and take good care of it,”she said with a determined look.Back in school,Catherine spotted Landy sitting by herself in a corner. She kept her head down with her eyes fixed on the floor as usual. Catherine thought Landy was just like the poor little chicken, being teased and ignored by her classmates, merely due to her special height. She told other kids,“It’s time for me to make an apology to Landy.” Astonished at what she said, all the kids burst out screaming,“Talking to the long spaghetti? Are you crazy?”
But Catherine walked directly toward Landy, regardless of what they said.“Hi,Landy. I’m sorry about the spaghetti thing.” Catherine murmured an apology, her face reddening.“I know it hurts you. Can you forgive me?" She figured Landy might just walk away. But she lifted her misty eyes and nodded yes. Catherine wiped away her tears, giving her a warm hug. Moved by the scene, the other kids also came to offer their sincere apologies to Landy. From that day on, no one made up silly chants about Landy, and Catherine also gained an important life lesson that everyone should be treated equally no matter how special he or she was.

Good friendship can get people through almost anything. Many times, a good friend will know what you need before you even ask for it, and they’ll want to offer a helping hand. That’s what happened to two friends in Caddo Hills High School. When one differently abled young man needed help, his friend went above and beyond.
When Brandon and Tanner met, Brandon was using a hand-push wheelchair. The chair was becoming kind of a pain for Brandon as he had to push his way down the halls from class to class around Caddo Hills High School. “My arms would get really tired and I would have to stop and take rests,” said Brandon.
Sometimes when they were together, Brandon would ask Tanner to push his wheelchair. Tanner was happy to help. Most often, Tanner would offer to help and he noticed how hard using this wheelchair was on his friend. Tanner thought that if his friend had had an electric wheelchair, life would be easier for him. But Brandon’s family was unable to afford it. Seeing how much his friend struggled in his wheelchair, Tanner made up his mind to do something about it. “He’s just been a really good friend and I wanted to do him a favor. I just felt like I needed to do it and I wanted to do it,” Tanner explained.
Then the enthusiastic(热心的)high school student became devoted to getting his friend a wheelchair. He got an after-school job at an auto repair shop and he worked there every afternoon. In order to help his friend out, Tanner worked part-time for two years. All of the money he earned went towards saving for a self-powered wheelchair. That moment finally came in late February, when he would present Brandon with a life-changing gift during the school day.

On second thought, Tanner decided to give him an electric wheelchair as a present, in case he declined the money. With the help of his mother, Tanner found a wheelchair in an online store , which he thought would be the perfect gift for his friend. After buying the wheelchair, Tanner gave it to Brandon during the school day.
Brandon cried when he first got the wheelchair. He was so grateful to his friend for the amazing act of kindness. “Wow, I can’t believe he did that for me!” Brandon said, adding that it had been his dream to own an electric wheel-chair. Now, it was easier for him to get around, and he wouldn’t ever have to worry about his arms getting tired out again. Tanner was happy that his friend liked it. “I will help him as long as he needs me,” Tanner said, wishing more people in the world to care for the disabled.

Pam Bales left her car and stepped onto the snow-covered Jewell Trail. She planned a six-hour hike through New Hampshire’s Mount Washington State Park. The hike up the lower part of Jewell was pleasant. At 8:30 am, still below the tree line, she took the first in a series of on-the-trail selfies.
Less than an hour later, she took another photo, after she’d climbed into colder air and deeper snows. She made her way across the snow-covered ridge toward Mount Washington. Then she noticed something: a single set of footprints in the snow ahead of her. She’d been following faint tracks all day and hadn’t given them much thought, because so many people climb Jewell Trail. But these, she realized, had been made by a pair of trainers, not suitable for hiking on snow.
By 11 am, Bales was getting cold and decided to abandon her plan. The only thing keeping Bales on Gulfside Trail was the trainer tracks in the sonw. As she fought the wind and heavy sleet (雨夹雪), the tracks made a hard left-hand turn off the trail.
Now she alarmed. She was sure the hiker could get through in the ow visibility and was heading straight toward the challenging trails of the Great Gulf Wilderness. Bales stood there, stunned. The temperature and clouds were in a race to find their lowest point, and darkness was mere hours away. She turned to the left and called out, “Hello!” into the frozen fog.
Nothing. She called out again: “Is anybody out there? Do you need help?”
The strong westerly winds carried her voice away. She blew into her rescue whistle. For a fleeting moment she thought she heard someone reply, but it was just the wind playing games with her mind. She stood listening, then turned and walked cautiously in the direction of the single set of tracks. Bales followed the tracks cautiously for 20 to 30 meters. She rounded a slight corner and saw a man sitting motionless.

When she approached him and said hello, he did not react. Taking a deep breath, Bales got closer, checked his pulse and suddenly realized that the man must have passed out. She knew she had to wake him up immediately or the dreadful weather could put him in greater danger. Out of her bag, Bales took a carpet to wrap the man, gave some hot water to him, called out repeatedly and shook him hard. Fortunately, it didn’t take long before the man came to himself.
After waking the man up, Bales recognized that they had to get out of there soon. The wind kept howling with the heavy sleet driving fiercely, and even worse, darkness began to fall. Anxious, Bales struggled to help the man up, supporting his weight and inching along the trail, following the tracks left by her hiking boots. After what seemed like ages, they finally made it to the foot of the mountain. The man was rushed to hospital immediately. Exhausted as she was, Bales felt a wave of happiness welled up inside.

When asked about why she chose to be a cadet (学员) firefighter, Ava Smith talked about her father’s action four months ago. “The girl he saved is going to live a whole life because of him. It’s incredible!” she said.
Jonathan Smith, and his 13-year-old daughter, Ava, were driving on the 1.4-mile-long, two-lane Route 90 bridge, which spans (横跨) the shallow waters of Assawoman Bay.
Suddenly, the calm was disturbed by the scream of tyres.
Not far ahead of them, a black pickup truck (小卡车) was sliding from one lane to the other. It crashed into a barrier, turned around like endless, and came to rest hanging over the edge of the bridge. Smith hit the brakes in time to avoid the vehicles in his path, but too late: he ran into a BMW directly ahead of him.
Smith stopped the car. “Ava, are you OK?” he asked. She was obviously shocked, but unhurt.
He ran to the BMW. “Are you OK?” he asked the driver. She nodded, too terrified to speak.
And then another scream came from the pickup. The truck bed hung out past the railing (栏杆), about 10 meters above the waters of the bay. The driver’s door was pushed open and a man climbed out. He dropped to the ground, then ran to the railing. The man pointed down, saying something in Spanish to Smith. In the water was a car seat. Next to it was a girl, about two years old: pink dress, brown hair, brown eyes, floating on her back, kicking and shouting.
Matters quickly went from bad to frightening when the baby girl rolled over onto her stomach. Smith waited for the pickup driver to do something, but he didn’t. Maybe he was in shock.

Para 1
“Ava!” Smith yelled, removing his shoes. “Stay by the car!” Climbing onto the railing, he eyed the shallow water. “Better less than 3 feet deep.” he thought to himself. As if mustering up all his courage, Smith jumped off with belly down. A moment later, he was bouncing off the sandy bottom and luckily, unhurt! The little girl was less than 1 meter away. Smith swam to her in a few quick strokes and lifted her out of the water: mouth half open, eyes nearly closed, not breathing. “Come on, stay with me!” A sense of panic crept over this middle-aged man. Seconds later, composing his thoughts, Smith recalled the first aid measures learned years ago.
Para 2
Standing, he laid her against his shoulder and beat her back hard. Some water came streaming down the baby’s mouth. But still no breath. Another whack on the back and then Smith felt the little fingers gripping him around the neck. Her eyes were opened now. Smith hugged her to shield her from the cold. Just then a family on a small boat pulled up and took Smith and the little girl to the waiting ambulance near a dock. The toddler suffered a broken shoulder but was otherwise uninjured. However, on seeing Ava, Smith hugged her tighter than ever. When interviewed later, Smith admitted the fear flashing across his mind but the desire to save a life took the upper hand. That heroic deed not only kept one girl from dying, but fueled the passion of another girl.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Arshad had been out window shopping with his parents. That was all they did these days because they didn’t have enough money to afford all the shiny clothes, shoes and other fancy items the windows displayed. Even from a distance, they looked so promising and inviting that one couldn’t help but go over and look at them.
Ever since Arshad’s father lost his business, Arshad’s family barely had the money to make ends meet. They even had to move to a rented house, which was smaller and was situated in the shabbier part of the city. Unlike his previous house, where he had a big luxurious room all to himself, here Arshad had to share his room and bed with his naughty younger brother who always had the room in a horrible mess.
What was worse, the playground in this neighborhood was nothing like the one in his previous neighborhood’s; swings were all broken and the seesaw(跷跷板) only had one seat. There weren’t even any bookshops nearby where he could spend his free time.
That day, Arshad and his brother were terribly bored when their father decided to take them outfor window shopping. When his father saw the sad look on Arshad’s face, he sat down next to him and said, “Remember, there are children out there who don’t even have the things you do, like warm clothes, a roof over their heads, good education and all the delicious meals that your mother prepares for you, three times a day. You should always be grateful for what you have.”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右:2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Arshad remembered how he always complained about the swings in his playground.

Thinking of the happy children in that school, Arshad decided to do something.

Arshad remembered how he always complained about the swings in his playground. He felt a rush of guilt. At least he had a playground! Despite all these things, Arshad noticed how happy and satisfied all the children were. How they played and laughed, with not a single frowning face or a complaining voice. On their way back from the school, Arshad’s father said, “This is what I was talking about.”
Thinking of the happy children in that school, Arshad decided to do something. He prepared a gratitude list, jotting down all the things he was thankful for. Then he pulled out an empty cardboard box and put in all the things that he thought the children in that school might need--coloring books, toys and other such goods. When his mother asked about the box, he told her how he planned to donate these things. “I am sharing happiness,” he told his mother, his face beaming.

I was eight the first time I played checkers. I’ve played about a thousand games since then, but none was so memorable as that first one.
It was icy January in Kansas. When the snowstorm hit, cutting off our power, we were thrown into darkness though it was still around noon. No heat, no light. The winter became terrible for everyone-especially for me and my six year old brother.
Methodically Grandpa gathered up his winter coat, scarf and gloves, and disappeared into snow. Several minutes later, he returned, carrying much wood. Glancing casually at my brother and me, he said, “Come on boys. Time to build a fire. ”
