Children are three times more likely to spend lots of time watching TV and playing on screens if their parents do the same, suggested by a Bristol University study. Parents’ computer use was also linked to children’s computer use, and this link was also stronger between fathers and daughters than fathers and sons. The link between fathers’ and daughters’ weekend screen time is particularly strong, it shows. Previous research suggests too much screen time can damage the health of adults and children.
The study looked at five-and six-year-olds from 1,000 Bristol families. Parents were asked how much time they and their children spent watching TV and using a computer, or a cellphone. The results, published in the International Journal of Nutrition and Activity, showed that during the week, 12% of the boys, 8% of the girls and 30% of the parents watched more than two hours of television each weekday. In the families the children were 3.4 times more likely to adopt the same habit if their father exceeded this level — and 3.7 times more likely if their mother watched more than two hours.
On a weekend day, screen-viewing time was much higher, with 45% of the boys, 43% of the girls, 53% of the mothers and 57% of the fathers spending more than two hours watching TV. At the weekend, children were nearly five times more likely to watch more than two hours of TV if their mother or father did the same. Daughters of the fathers who spent more than two hours watching TV were more than twice as likely as sons to exceed this level, the study found. The Bristol researchers said further research was needed to find out why this was the case.
21. From the passage we can know that ________.
A. parents’ screen time has a great effect on children’s
B. fathers are more like their daughters in watching TV

D. They were required to try their best to control their screen time.
23. Who spent more than two hours on TV each weekday?
A. 12% of the girls. B. 8% of the fathers.
C. 25% of the students. D. 30% of the parents.

A. They will search why fathers’ screen time affects their daughters’ more.
B. They will read the International Journal of Nutrition and Activity.
C. They will measure what kind of harm the children are suffering from.
D. They will persuade the children not to adopt their parents’ habit.

The unforgiving demands of the IB program became my reality on the third day of school with an overwhelming physics lab. My teacher’s claim that no one would score above 90% shook my confidence. This anxiety was intensified at home, where my father voiced his concerns over my flat SAT progress, a necessity for a celebrated university.
The final catalyst for my breakdown was an unexpected rejection from the Regional Red Cross Youth Council. As vice president of my school’s chapter, I had never considered this possibility. The Red Cross was my passion and what I relied on to set me apart from other applicants. This rejection made my future seem dim, and I broke like a rubber band stretched beyond its limit.
I found my mother, the woman who had sacrificed her own career and life for my opportunities, and poured out my fears. She listened attentively before drawing a circle on the tablecloth. “This is your time,” she began. “Eighty percent is schoolwork, ten percent the SAT, and ten percent extracurriculars.” She then looked at me with deep emotion and said, “But most importantly, at one hundred percent, is your mental health.”
“Nothing is more important than your health,” she continued. “We want you to have a good job so you’ll be less stressed. If this path makes you so unhappy, it isn’t worth it. If you’re happier flipping hamburgers, so be it.”
Her insight was a big relief. I realized a rubber band doesn’t have to keep stretching. A rubber band that wraps around your hair during the day and is allowed to rest on your nightstand at night won’t ever break.
Though my routine remained the same — studying hard and pursuing excellence — my perspective was forever changed. The fear of failure lost its power. I am still reaching for the moon, but I am no longer afraid. For I know that if I miss, I will land right in my mother’s arms.

Sports are not a modern invention. People around the world have enjoyed exciting and meaningful sports since ancient times. Here are some examples of ancient sports from different cultures.
Egyptian Pharaohs’ Running Race
In ancient Egypt, kings demonstrated their physical strength by running during the Sed Festival. This special event took place after a king had ruled for 30 years. For example, Pharaoh Djoser ran around the temple for a long time to prove he was still healthy and strong.
Minoan Bull-Leaping
The Minoan people created a very dangerous sport called bull-leaping. In this event, athletes would run directly at a charging bull, grab its horns (角) and leap over its back. Wall paintings from the Palace of Knossos show these exciting scenes.
Mesopotamian Wrestling
Ancient Mesopotamians practiced wrestling and boxing. Stone carvings show strong fighters wearing skirts during matches. These matches were intense, with fighters wrestling like wild animals.
Ancient Chinese Archery (射箭)
In the Zhou Dynasty’s royal education, archery was a required skill for men. Competitions, called “sheyi”, were held with strict rules and ceremonies. To win, a person needed both physical skill and qualities such as grace, self-control and respect. These contests often took place in temples and served to promote moral values and social order.
Although ancient sports varied widely in form and intent, they universally highlighted the value of skill. Beyond mere competition, these activities were deeply integrated into their societies, reflecting cultural beliefs and shaping a sense of community.
29. What do Minoan bull-leaping and Mesopotamian wrestling have in common?
A. They followed strict ceremonies.
B. They were created to honor kings.
C. They were physically demanding.
D. They included fighting against animals.
30. What is special about ancient Chinese archery?
A. It had flexible rules. B. It helped build character.
C. It encouraged self-expression. D. It served as public entertainment.

A. To stress the importance of sports.
B. To inform readers of modern sports.

D. To show some ancient sports and their cultural value.
D
At first, they sounded distant, as if they were around a phone in a prison. But as we chatted, they slowly started to sound more like themselves. They told me personal stories I’d never heard. I learned about the first time my dad got drunk. Mum talked about getting in trouble for staying out late. They gave me life advice and told me things about their childhoods, as well as my own. It was amazing. For a moment I forgot I wasn’t really talking to my parents at all, but to their digital copies.
This Mum and Dad live inside an app on my phone as voice assistants created by the company HereAfter AI. The company’s goal is to let the living communicate with the dead. Technology like this, which lets you “talk” to people who have died, has been a mainstay of science fiction for decades. But now it’s becoming a reality, thanks to advances in AI and voice technology. I wanted to test out what it might be like.
My real, flesh-and-blood parents are still alive and well; their virtual versions (虚拟版) were made just to help me understand the technology. But their digital copies offer a glimpse at a world where it’s possible to have conversations with loved ones long after they’re gone. From what I could know over a dozen conversations with my virtual parents, this really will make it easier to keep the people we loved close. It’s not hard to see the attraction. People might turn to digital copies for comfort, or to mark special occasions like anniversaries.
But for some, this tech may be alarming or frightening. When I talked to friends about this article, some of them just went away. There’s a common, deeply held belief that we shouldn’t mess with death.
But I’m only human and that worry ends up being washed away by the even scarier possibility of losing the people I love. If technology might help me hang onto them, is it so wrong to try?
32. Why did the writer chat with his virtual parents?
A. To see how the technology works.
B. To learn more about his parents.
C. To remember his late parents.
D To find ways to improve the technology.
33. What can we learn about the technology mentioned?
A. It allows users to live on an app.
B. It offers a link between the dead and the living.
C. It is invented by a science fiction writer.
D. It leads users to lose their friends.
34. What is the writer’s attitude towards the technology?
A. Doubtful. B. Unclear.
C. Negative. D. Positive.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Your can talk to your parents.
B Parents appear on your phone.
C. A breakthrough in AI may benefit you.
D. AI means never having to say goodbye.

It was a winter morning when I received a package with no return address. The plain brown wrapping gave no clues, and my name was handwritten in shaky letters. ____36____
Inside was a small wooden box, its surface carved with complicated patterns of vines and birds. I lifted the lid (盖子). A faint scent of cedar (雪松) filled the air. ____37____ It was my grandmother’s brooch (胸针) — the one she always wore to Sunday dinners, with a single pearl suspended like a dewdrop. She had passed away three months earlier, and the family assumed the jewelry had been lost in the chaos of her estate.
My hands trembled as I picked it up. ____38____ The weight of the brooch in my palm felt like a connection to a past I had been neglecting. Then I noticed a slip of paper stuffed beneath the velvet lining. The handwriting matched the package: “For the girl who loved listening to stories under the old oak tree. Keep this close when you write yours.”
____39____ Only Grandma called me that during our summer visits I hadn’t seen her in two years before her death — too busy with school and friends to visit. Guilt washed over me like a tide. How easily life’s distractions can pull us away from what truly matters.
That evening, I examined the brooch under lamplight. ____40____ The year Grandma and I had spent afternoons recording made-up tales about the birds in her garden. I sat there, tears down, as I remembered those carefree days. From that moment on, I promised never to let life’s busyness overshadow the simple joys of family and connection.

B. The nickname “Storybird” leapt out at me.
C. The postmark showed a town 200 miles away.
D. On the back was a date, the summer I turned ten.
E. Whoever sent this knew my childhood thoroughly.

Harry slammed (猛关) his bedroom door. He’d been begging Dad for a new tablet for weeks — one with a fast camera to take photos for his art class. But Dad just shook his head every time.
“We need to save for your younger sister’s school trip to the science museum,” he’d said. Harry thought to himself, “It’s not fair. All my friends have one for their projects.”
That evening, Dad found Harry sitting in the backyard, sad. He pulled up a chair and sat down, asking Harry, “Remember that red bike in the storage room? That thing used to be my pride and joy.” Harry nodded, thinking of the dusty thing covered by a strong cloth.
“I wanted a new bike more than anything when I was your age,” Dad said. “Your grandpa found that red one at a junkyard — with a bent wheel. He said we couldn’t afford a new one. So I spent every weekend out here, fixing that old one — straightening the wheel, patching (修补) the tires, even repainting it red with leftover paint found in the storage room.” He laughed softly. “When I finally rode it, I felt prouder than if it had been brand-new. I earned it.”
“Why are you telling me this? My tablet isn’t a bike,” Harry responded.
“Because wanting things is easy,” Dad said. “But working for them? That’s when you start caring about how hard it is to get. That’s how you learn what they’re really worth. I know you want a tablet very much. But your sister’s trip — she’s been talking about it since the second grade. Maybe there’s a way to do both.”
Harry’s throat suddenly felt tight. “What if ... what if I sold my old stuff? Toys, books — have a yard sale?” Dad’s eyes lit up. “That’s a good plan. But you have to do the work — pricing, setting up, and selling. Whatever you make, every cent goes towards your tablet.”

1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
The next day, Harry dragged boxes full of old toys and books to the yard.

Detroit, Cleveland and Buffalo are the biggest, sweetest day cities, but this holiday is gaining in popularity. Every year throughout the country, sweetest day is celebrated to make someone happy. It is an occasion which offers an opportunity to remember not only the sick, aged and orphaned but also friends and relatives. Over sixty years ago, a Cleveland man, believing that the city’s orphans and patients too often felt forgotten, formed in the mind an idea of showing them that they were not. He did this by the distribution of small gifts. With the help of his friends and neighbors, he distributed them on a Saturday in October. In the years that followed, other residents began to participate in the event, which came to be called sweetest day. In time, the day became an occasion for acknowledging others with a kind act or a small remembrance. Soon the idea began spreading to other cities all over the country.

My family felt so proud that we held a congratulation party for her. My grandmother taught music at a high school. She has always been into dancing and singing. After her retirement, she goes square dancing every night with her friends. Their dance has a strong rhythm and a wide range of movements, making it different from the slow traditional Chinese square dancing. She also goes to a dance class for seniors every week at Heilongjiang University. She often expresses that dancing is the happiest part of her day, which not only keeps her fit, but most importantly, brings her many like-minded friends. Qu Wenyong, a researcher who has been following the elderly care industry for many years says in his study report that instead of just looking after grandchildren, increasing numbers of elderly Chinese are enjoying their own lives. Do you want to see how well my grandmother can dance? Follow my account and I’ll share the video I’m recording with you tonight. I’m sure you’ll be surprised.

D. They were required to try their best to control their screen time.
23. Who spent more than two hours on TV each weekday?
A. 12% of the girls. B. 8% of the fathers.
C. 25% of the students. D. 30% of the parents.
24. What will the researchers in the Bristol University continue to do?

根据第二段中的“The final catalyst for my breakdown was an unexpected rejection from the Regional Red Cross Youth Council. As vice president of my school’s chapter, I had never considered this possibility. The Red Cross was my passion and what I relied on to set me apart from other applicants. This rejection made my future seem dim, and I broke like a rubber band stretched beyond its limit.(导致我崩溃的最后一个catalyst是地区红十字会青年理事会意外的拒绝。作为我校分会的副会长,我从未想过这种可能性。红十字会是我的热爱,也是我赖以区别于其他申请者的优势。这次拒绝让我的未来变得暗淡,我像一根被拉过极限的橡皮筋一样崩溃了。)”可知,红十字会的拒绝是让作者最终崩溃的又一个因素,故“catalyst”意为“原因,诱因”,与“Cause”含义相近。故选D项。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“She then looked at me with deep emotion and said, “But most importantly, at one hundred percent, is your mental health.”(然后她深情地看着我说:“但最重要的是,这百分之百里,是你的心理健康。”)”以及第四段中的“Nothing is more important than your health,” she continued.(“没有什么比你的健康更重要,”她继续说道。)” 故选A项。
根据第二段中的“This rejection made my future seem dim, and I broke like a rubber band stretched beyond its limit.(这次拒绝让我的未来变得暗淡,我像一根被拉过极限的橡皮筋一样崩溃了。)”以及第五段中的“Her insight was a big relief. I realized a rubber band doesn’t have to keep stretching. A rubber band that wraps around your hair during the day and is allowed to rest on your nightstand at night won’t ever break.(她的见解让我如释重负。我意识到橡皮筋不必一直拉伸。一根白天扎头发、晚上能放在床头柜上休息的橡皮筋永远不会断。)”可知,作者最初用“橡皮筋”比喻自己因压力崩溃,后来在母亲开导下,用“能休息的橡皮筋”比喻学会缓解压力,体现了作者对压力看法的转变。故选C项。
【28题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段中的“Though my routine remained the same — studying hard and pursuing excellence — my perspective was forever changed. The fear of failure lost its power. I am still reaching for the moon, but I am no longer afraid. For I know that if I miss, I will land right in my mother’s arms.(虽然我的日常没有改变——努力学习、追求卓越——但我的观念已经永远改变了。对失败的恐惧失去了力量。我仍然在reaching for the moon,但我不再害怕了。因为我知道,如果我没做到,我会正好落在妈妈的怀里。)”可知,作者依然保持努力学习、追求卓越的状态,只是不再害怕失败,故“reaching for the moon”指“继续树立高远目标并为之努力”,即“aim high”。故选B项。

My real flesh-and-blood parents are still alive and well; their virtual versions (虚拟版) were made just to help me understand the technology.
But I’m only human, and that worry ends up being washed away by the even scarier possibility of losing the people I love. If technology might help me hang onto them, is it so wrong to try?
32. Why did the writer chat with his virtual parents?
A. To see how the technology works.
B. To learn more about his parents.
C. To remember his late parents.
D. To find ways to improve the technology.
B. Parents appear on your phone.

____39____ Only Grandma called me that during our summer visits. I hadn’t seen her in two years before her death — too busy with school and friends to visit. Guilt washed over me like a tide. How easily life’s distractions can pull us away from what truly matters.
That evening, I examined the brooch under lamplight. ____40____ The year Grandma and I had spent afternoons recording made-up tales about the birds in her garden. 【
根据上文“It was a winter morning when I received a package with no return address. The plain brown wrapping gave no clues, and my name was handwritten in shaky letters.(那是一个冬天的早晨,我收到了一个没有回信地址的包裹。普通的棕色包装没有任何线索,我的名字是用摇摇晃晃的字母手写的)”可知,本句承接上文,继续介绍作者收到的包裹的情况。故C选项“邮戳显示的是200英里外的一个城镇”符合语境,故选C。
【37题详解】
根据上文“I lifted the lid. A faint scent of cedar filled the air.(我打开盖子。空气中弥漫着淡淡的雪松香味)”以及后文“It was my grandmother’s brooch — the one she always wore to Sunday dinners, with a single pearl suspended like a dewdrop.(那是我祖母的胸针——她总是戴着它去参加星期天的晚宴,胸针上挂着一颗珍珠,像露珠一样)”可知,打开木盒后,首先映入眼帘的应是胸针的外观。
根据上文“My hands trembled as I picked it up. (当我把它拿起来时,我的手在颤抖)”可知,手颤抖着拿起胸针,说明作者初见已故祖母遗物时的震惊与珍视,故G选项“有那么一会儿,我只是盯着看,害怕它会消失”符合语境,故选G。
【39题详解】
根据后文“Only Grandma called me that during our summer visits. I hadn’t seen her in two years before her death — too busy with school and friends to visit. Guilt washed over me like a tide. How easily life’s distractions can pull us away from what truly matters.(只有在我们夏天的相聚时,祖母才会这样称呼我。在她去世前的两年里,我都没见过她——因为学业和朋友的缘故,我根本没时间去探望她。一股愧疚感像潮水般涌上心头。多么轻易地,生活中的各种干扰就会让我们偏离真正重要的事情)”可知,后文介绍了昵称引发作者回忆,故空处需说明“called me that”指代的内容。故B选项“‘故事鸟’的绰号一下子吸引了我”符合语境,故选B。
【40题详解】
根据上文“That evening, I examined the brooch under lamplight. (那天晚上,我在灯光下细看那枚胸针)”以及后文“The year Grandma and I had spent afternoons recording made-up tales about the birds in her garden. I sat there, tears down, as I remembered those carefree days.(那年,我和祖母总会在午后编些关于她花园里那些鸟儿的故事,还把它们记录了下来。我坐在那里,眼泪直流,回忆着那些无忧无虑的时光)”可知,本句需引出对童年与祖母相处时光的回忆,说明端详胸针时发现背面的日期,故D选项“背面是一个日期,是我十岁那年的夏天”符合语境,故选D。

【答案】 This year’s National Day holiday was made special by the Mid-Autumn Festival. I invited my classmate, Chris, the exchange student from the US, to my home, hoping he could feel the warmth of a family reunion and understand this important tradition.
The evening was truly enjoyable. My family welcomed Chris warmly. We shared a big dinner, during which my grandparents told us the story of Chang’e. Chris was especially curious about the mooncakes. I explained the meaning of the round shape — symbolizing family unity. Then, we went to the balcony, admiring the bright full moon while eating the sweet treats. Chris tried a red bean paste one and loved it.
It was a meaningful day. Not only did Chris experience Chinese culture firsthand, but I also felt proud to share our customs. The festival, indeed, is about happiness and sharing.

Harry slammed (猛关) his bedroom door. He’d been begging Dad for a new tablet for weeks — one with a fast camera to take photos for his art class. But Dad just shook his head every time.
“We need to save for your younger sister’s school trip to the science museum” he’d said.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
The next day, Harry dragged boxes full of old toys and books to the yard.

When the last customer left, Harry counted the day’s earnings.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next day, Harry dragged boxes full of old toys and books to the yard. He carefully arranged each item, hoping to attract potential buyers. As he set up the stall, neighbors and passers-by began to stop by, intrigued by the variety of goods on display. Harry enthusiastically explained the features of each toy and book, sharing stories behind some of his favorites. The sun shone brightly overhead, and with each sale, Harry’s excitement grew. Not only was he making progress towards his goal, but he was also learning valuable lessons about communication and negotiation.
When the last customer left, Harry counted the day’s earnings. To his surprise and delight, the total took his breath away — it was more than enough for the tablet’s basic model! A wave of fierce pride washed over him, stronger than any excitement he’d felt just wanting the device. He realized Dad was right: the hours spent sorting, pricing, hauling, and selling had transformed the tablet from a mere object of desire into something deeply personal and valuable. Through effort and perseverance, he could not only achieve his dream but also develop a deeper appreciation for the value of hard work. This tablet wouldn’t just be new; it would be earned.
