To know body language better, Cristina Stach, a 25-year-old healthcare provider, read What Everybody Is Saying by Joe Navarro. “It changed how I communicated with everyone,” she says. About 80% of our interactions with each other are nonverbal (非言语的). From birth, our body language sends out clues to what we’re thinking, and she also says, “We can learn to exercise control over it.”
Becoming aware of her own body language, the physician recognized her preferred way of sitting with her arms and legs crossed. While it was comfortable for her, patients considered it discomfort with them. She found the same to be true with eye contact. “I don’t make much eye contact with people because it makes me uncomfortable,” Stach says, “but it makes others think I’m inattentive.”
Armed with the knowledge, she began uncrossing her arms and legs and making more eye contact when in conversation, “Using positive body language helps strengthen patient interactions, and once these habits become natural, you may notice your patients are more receptive to your advice,” she says.
“Eye level and eye contact are crucial to showing respect and being trusted. Talking with patients at eye level is important”, Stach says, “However, looking down from a higher eye level while talking with a patient may convey (传达) an attitude that you are superior to them”. Stach recommends that physicians lower their eye level as much as possible by sitting on a low chair facing their patient while the patient remains seated on the exam table.
Anyway, body language can send a message of care and trust, “In medicine, we’re often in our patient’s face during a medical exam, but when talking with them, being too close may be disturbing, especially in Western cultures where we have broader personal body comfortable distance,” Stach notes, “But in Eastern cultures that distance is much narrower. So, when interacting with people from these cultures, stepping back is seen as offensive. That’s something to keep in mind.”
24. How did Stach learn more about body language?
A. By reading a related book.
B. By discussing with Joe Navarro.
C. By communicating with patients.
D. By using her body language in work.
25. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about Stach?
A. Her complaint. B. Her sitting posture.
C. Her comfort zone. D. Her reflection.
26. What is the benefit for doctors to lower their eye level?
A. Winning respect.
B. Gaining trust.
C. Seeing more carefully.
D. Appearing knowledgeable.
27. What does the underlined word “offensive” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Friendly and welcoming.
B. Essential and thoughtful.
C. Rude and unpleasant.
D. Troublesome and inconvenient.
C
ChatGPT is, of course, neither male nor female. It’s a computer program, like any other large language model, after all. But the way it talks definitely has some distinctively male features. Not only does it talk like a man, it talks like an entitled, overconfident man. This is not really surprising. ChatGPT answers are based on a large amount of text available on the Internet. And the majority of these texts have been written by, well, entitled, overconfident men. ChatGPT may adjust the style a bit. But it can’t adjust the general attitude of being absolutely sure of its own truth.
A case in point. I remembered a scene from an interesting English movie I watched in high school. Recently, I wanted to watch this movie again and asked ChatGPT which movie it was. ChatGPT was very confident that it was The Breakfast Club. I checked the plot of The Breakfast Club and found no such scene. I told ChatGPT about this, and it gave me another equally confident answer, saying that it was Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. But again, there was no such scene in this movie.
The issue is not that ChatGPT gets things wrong. Of course it does, and these hallucinations (幻觉现象) of AI systems have been analyzed to death. The issue is just how sure it is about its wrong answers.
Why is this important? Don’t we have other things to worry about when it comes to the AI taking over our lives? This unearned overconfidence is important. We spend a fair amount of time interacting with artificial intelligence. ChatGPT gets 2.5 billion requests per day a number that keeps getting higher and higher. And if a growing number of our interactions are with agents that seem to have a sense of entitlement and superiority, it is bound to affect how we interact with one another. There are lots of potential dangers of AI taking over our lives. But AI working against our intellectual humility (认知谦逊) is something less obvious, but in the long run, it could be more dangerous.
28. What can we infer about ChatGPT from paragraph 1?
A. It speaks like entitled men.
B. It is biologically male.
C. It rejects human writers.
D It steals human knowledge.
29. What makes ChatGPT so confident?
A. Its daily requests.
B. Its memory ability.
C. Its training sources.
D. Its programming skills.
30. What is the author’s feeling about people’s using ChatGPT?
A. Satisfied. B. Worried.
C. Frightened. D. Convinced.
31. What can be the suitable title for the text?
A. The Growing Popularity of ChatGPT
B. How to Get Better Answers from ChatGPT
C. The Hidden Danger of ChatGPT’s Overconfidence
D. Why ChatGPT Often Gives Wrong Movie Information

Reaching for our phones upon waking, standing in the same point on the station platform — We all have habits that shape our lives. But you may underestimate the power habits have in your life. A new study finds most daily actions are done on autopilot.
Habitual behaviour is made up of the things that we do without thinking, prompted (引起) by our environment and learned through repeated action. Meeting a familiar situation can cause a learned association, which in turn prompts a non-conscious (无意识的) desire to act. The sound of your alarm clock, for example, may be enough to prompt you to reach for your phone, without consciously deciding to.
How much of our day-to-day lives are shaped by habit? To answer the question, we recruited (招募) 105 people, aged 18-73 years old, and sent messages to their phones six times a day over one week. Each message asked four questions: what were they doing when we interrupted them? To what extent was that action begun without conscious thought? To what extent was it performed automatically? And how much had they wanted to do it? The most commonly reported behaviour types were working or studying, and using a screen-based device. More importantly, 65% of all actions were done out of habit.
However, this does not mean that we simply act mindlessly, without awareness or free will. Around one in three actions in our study were intentional but not habitual. People had consciously chosen to do them, probably because the action or setting was unfamiliar, or because their habits were not strong enough to generate influence. Crucially, 76% of all actions were things people intended to do. Habits develop when we repeatedly do things in certain settings. Several studies suggest that, with once-daily repetition, it takes around two months to form a habit. The time required for habit formation ranges considerably, though. One 2021 study found habit formation to take anywhere from 4 to 335 days.
Therefore, habits aren’t free will’s enemy — they ease life. Problems arise when habits conflict with goals. When such conflicts occur, understanding how to change those habits becomes crucial.
32. What’s the purpose of paragraph 1?
A. To compare different habits.
B. To list people’s daily habits.
C. To show the use of phones.
D. To introduce the habitual behavior.
33. How are habits primarily developed?
A. Through strong non-conscious desires.
B. Through repeated actions in stable contexts.
C. Through conscious choices in new situations.
D. Through exposure to unfamiliar environments.
34. Why did the researchers send messages to participants’ phones?
A. To monitor their screen time habits.
B. To track their daily routine patterns.
C. To remind them to form new habits.
D. To collect data about their behaviors.
35. What will the text talk about next?
A. Ways to break bad habits.
B. Data about intentional actions.
C. Approaches to designing a new study.
D. Reasons why people hate changing habits.

So what really determines whether a child will grow well? While some may believe it’s their grades or extracurricular success, the answer is different. The children that grow healthy are the ones who feel they truly matter for who they are. Their worth isn’t tied to their achievements — it’s what they think in their mind. ____37____

The more a child feels valued, the more they want to make the world a better place.
When you parent your children, remember that you matter too. When parents develop their own sense of value and take care of their well-being, it doesn’t just help them recharge. ____40____ By accepting this mindset and knowing that who you are, not just what you do, matters most, both you and your children can grow healthy.

Molly Goodman, a single mother of a three-year-old boy, had recently moved to a new neighborhood. She’d heard a lot about her 72-year-old neighbor, Morgan Palmer. Some neighbors said he was not right in the head, while others said he got angry easily. Molly was not the kind of person to believe in what others said, so she didn’t pay attention to it.
One day, Molly ran into Mr. Palmer on the street. He was standing by a traffic light and looking around even after the light turned green. Sensing he needed help, Molly went up to him, took him by the arm, and helped him cross the road.
As they reached the other end of the street, Mr. Palmer thanked Molly and chatted with her for a while. After this meeting, Molly realized he wasn’t strange but just a lonely old man who had been misjudged by others.
Before moving to the neighborhood, Molly had left her job and was looking for a new one. When she finally found one, it turned out that she’d work 14 hours a day, including night shifts (夜班) for the first week. Molly wanted the job but worried about her son Adam, who needed someone to stay with him all the time due to his epilepsy (癫痫病).
Once, she noticed Mr. Palmer sitting on a resting chair. She greeted him, and during their conversation, Mr Palmer learned about Molly’s difficulty. He told Molly that he suffered from insomnia (失眠), and he only slept for 5 to 6 hours at a time. So he could help take care of Adam while she worked. Molly was happy that Mr. Palmer was willing to lend a hand. When Mr. Palmer arrived at Molly’s house the next day, Molly was glad to see her son relaxed and happy around Mr. Palmer. W: Really? What is it? I’ve tried writing them down, but I always lose the paper.
M: I use a password manager app. It stores all my passwords for emails, apps, and school accounts. I only need to remember one master password.
W: That sounds great! Does it cost money?
M: No, there are free versions. I can send you the link later. Also, avoid using simple passwords like “123456” or your birthday although they’re super easy to remember.
W: Thanks a lot! I’ll download it tonight. I’m so tired of wasting time resetting passwords every week. This will save me so much trouble.

M: I know. I will watch English news programs every day until we go abroad next Saturday.
W: That’s a good way to improve listening! It’s Friday today. Let’s watch this TV show called Friends? It’s full of fun and shows daily life situations. Best of all, it’s extremely easy for us students to understand.
M: OK. I’ll have a try.
W: I’m worried about more than just language — like body language. My cousin said some kinds of body languages polite here are rude there.
M: Oh right! I know nodding means “no” in some countries. So I plan to read a book about cultural body language this weekend.
W: I also heard smiling is usually safe, but we still need to be careful. Will you take the book with you abroad?
M: Yeah, and I’ll share notes with you.

W: Not yet. My father and I are planning to watch it after I finish work today. How was it?
M: It’s pretty cool just as my friend describes it. The robot clearly shows the difficulty it has in understanding our feelings. It masters all the languages of the world, and learns all these facts, but still has no idea about feelings. Even at the end, when it says it “loves” the scientist, it seems like it’s just repeating what it has learned.
W: So, the film is more about the robot learning humans act?
M: Yes. It’s sad, though, because you can tell the robot really wants to understand our feelings. Anyway, I don’t want to say too much about it. You’d better check it out by yourself.
W: OK. Let’s get back to work. We can discuss it after I watch it.

【答案】18. C 19. B 20. C
【解析】
【详解】Today, we’re talking about a young mountaineer who made history — Nima Rinji Sherpa. His journey to this achievement started in 2022, when he climbed Mount Manaslu for the first time, marking his first step toward climbing all of the world’s highest peaks.
Since then, he kept pushing forward. In the April of 2024, he showed great skill by taking on Annapurna without using extra oxygen — a challenge that highlighted his ability. Then, on October 9th, 2024, the then 18-year-old climber reached the top of Mount Shishapangma, one of the world’s highest mountains.
With this final climb, he completed the task of climbing all 14 peaks, and he did it in just 740 days. Nima comes from a mountaineering family; his father helped start a major travel company. But he has a bigger goal: he wants to show that Sherpas are more than just guides. He calls this mission SherpaPower, hoping to open a door for other local climbers.

【答案】24. A 25. D 26. B 27.

ChatGPT gets 2.5 billion requests per day, a number that keeps getting higher and higher.
D. It steals human knowledge.
29. What makes ChatGPT so confident?
A. Its daily requests.
B Its memory ability.
C. Its training sources.
D. Its programming skills.
30. What is the author’s feeling about people’s using ChatGPT?
A. Satisfied. B. Worried.
C. Frightened. D. Convinced.
31. What can be the suitable title for the text?
A. The Growing Popularity of ChatGPT
B. How to Get Better Answers from ChatGPT
C. The Hidden Danger of ChatGPT’s Overconfidence
D. Why ChatGPT Often Gives Wrong Movie Information

D
【答案】32. D 33. B 34. D 35. A

So what really determines whether a child will grow well? While some may believe it’s their grades or extracurricular success, the answer is different. The children that grow healthy are the ones who feel they truly matter for who they are. Their worth isn’t tied to their achievements — it’s what they think in their mind. ____37____
One of the ways to instill (灌输) the “you matter” belief is by actively praising your child. Give them affection regardless of performance. ____38____ Celebrate them for the positive impact they have on the world, not just their achievements. They matter and are important just by being themselves.

Palmer. Confident her son was safe, she left for work.

【答案】
However, when Molly got home from work, she didn’t see her son or Mr. Palmer. Her heart raced instantly. She checked Adam’s toy box, the kitchen, and even the balcony, calling their names anxiously. Just as panic started to take over, she spotted a crumpled note on the sofa. It was Mr. Palmer’s shaky handwriting: “Adam had a mild epilepsy. I took him to Oakwood Hospital — don’t worry, I’m with him.” Molly grabbed her coat, tears blurring her vision, and anxiously rushed to the hospital in a hurry.
According to the address on the note Molly left, she rushed to the children’s hospital. After reaching the hospital, Molly saw Mr. Palmer waiting outside the doctor’s office. His coat was unbuttoned, and his hands were still slightly trembling. He stepped forward quickly when he saw her. “The doctor said Adam’s fine now — he’s sleeping inside,” he said, voice soft with relief. “I held him tightly during the illness, just like you told me. He kept saying ‘Mommy’ till he fell asleep.” Molly embraced Mr. Palmer tightly, tears of gratitude rolling down. When they walked into the room, Adam opened his eyes and smiled at her. From then on, they became true family, breaking all the neighborhood’s wrong ideas.
