My name is Joe Mari, I am a male nurse from the Philippines who is working overseas, and sometimes, being away from your family and friends, you’ll mostly feel lonely, bored, and homesick. So in my spare time I draw portraits of people using Faber Castell classic coloured pencils, ballpoint pen, and pencil for black and white ones. I started drawing and won my first inter-school competition when I was 5. By that time I had no dreams of being an artist, as I thought it was all a ‘game’ and I was never serious about art. I became a part of my school paper as a cartoonist until high school and then time passed and I have forgotten about drawing. It went on to being just a hobby until I tried to get back at it again two years ago. I watched YouTube videos every night, trying to figure out how to improve my skills. Drawing people’s faces is a fascination for me, which is obviously displayed in my works. You’re probably wondering why I never took any courses related to art, and why I am a nurse. You see, there is a fine line between your dreams and your passion. I took the medical field in hopes of giving service to as many people as I can. I have always been fascinated by the world of Science and by the world of Art at the same time. My intention in sharing this story is not to compare, but rather to bring out whatever other interests you may have inside you. Sure you may be working in front of a desk at day, but who knows, maybe you also rock out with your band at night. With enough patience and perseverance, nothing can prevent passion. I hope I inspired you all with my story, so go on, get that paper and whatever tool you can use to create art! 4. What’s the author’s way to get rid of negative feeling? A. Picking up his fancy B. Playing games C. Achieving his dreams D. Sharing his stories 5. What did he do to have his painting skills improved? A. He took some courses B. He watched online video C. He worked every day D. He attended competitions 6. Why did the author choose to be a male nurse? A. He wanted to contribute to medicine. B. He wanted to help more people. C. He wanted to develop his interest in art. D. He wanted to encourage others. 7. Which of the following best describes the author? A. Ordinary and warm-hearted. B. Appealing and open-minded. C. Humorous and well-educated D. Hard-working and strong-willed. A 5. B 6. B 7. 根据第一段中“My name is Joe Mari, I am a male nurse from the Philippines who is working overseas, and sometimes, being away from your family and friends, you’ll mostly feel lonely, bored, and homesick. (我每天晚上都看YouTube视频,试图弄清楚如何提高我的技能)”可知,他在网上看视频来提高自己的绘画技巧。故选B。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第三段中“I took the medical field in hopes of giving service to as many people as I can.(我从事医学领域的工作,是希望能为尽可能多的人提供服务)”可知,作者选择成为一名男护士是因为他想帮助更多的人。 根据第二段中“It went on to being just a hobby until I tried to get back at it again two years ago. I watched YouTube videos every night, trying to figure out how to improve my skills. Drawing people’s faces is a fascination for me, which is obviously displayed in my works.(直到两年前我试图重新找回它之前,它一直只是我的一个爱好。我每天晚上都看YouTube视频,试图弄清楚如何提高我的技能。画人的脸对我来说是一种魅力,这在我的作品中表现得很明显)”以及倒数第二段中“With enough patience and perseverance, nothing can prevent passion. (有了足够的耐心和毅力,什么也阻挡不了激情)”可推知,作者勤奋和意志坚强。故选D。 C If Confucius (孔子)were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out. While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes. But this doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China. In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries.  These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually included Chinese art, history and philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantages of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks of Westerners philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers. So the old thinker’s ideas are still alive and well. Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West. As for the old thinker, he won’t soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is. 8. What is the first paragraph mainly intended to do? A. To provide some key facts about Confucius. B. To attract the readers’ interest in the subject. C. To show great respect for the ancient thinker. D. To prove the popularity of modern birthday celebrations. 9. What can we learn about the American students in Paragraph 4? A. They have a great interest in studying Chinese. B. They try to get high scores in their Chinese exams. C. They take an active part in fierce Chinese competitions. D. They fight for a chance to understand Chinese customers. 10. What is the best title for the passage? A. Forgotten Wisdom in America B. Huge Fans of the Chinese Language C. Chinese Culture for Westerners D. Old Thinker with a Big Future 11. Where is the passage most likely to appear? A. In a biography. B. In a history paper. C. In a newspaper. D. In a philosophy textbook. B 9. A 10. D 11. 根据第一段的“If Confucius (孔子)were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He’d need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.(如果孔子今天还活着,可以用一个大蛋糕来庆祝他在9月28日的生日,会有很多蜡烛。他需要一把扇子或一阵大风来帮他扑灭它们。)”可知,第一段说明孔子如果还活着的话那么岁数就很大,是为了吸引读者的注意力,让读者继续读下去,故选B。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段的“In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities.(在过去的20年里,中国研究项目在西方大学里非常受欢迎。)”和“Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese.(与此同时,美国的学生也在竞相学习汉语。)” 故选A。 通读全文,尤其是第三段的“In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.(在很多方面,他已经成为了一座桥梁,如果外国人想要更深入地了解中国,他们必须通过这座桥梁。)”及倒数第二段的“Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.(今天,中国比以往任何时候都更吸引西方,它将需要更多的教师向西方介绍孔子和中国文化。)” 根据第四段的“More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries.(最近,中国政府在80多个国家建立了孔子学院。)”及“Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese.(与此同时,美国的学生也在竞相学习汉语。)” C。 D When thinking about intelligence we often place humans at the top of the ranks. However, there is a species whose intelligence is far more advanced and perhaps more similar to humans than we’d thought — crows (乌鸦). In 2002, a crow named Betty wowed Oxford University scientists by picking up a piece of wire in her cage and bending it at one end to make a hooked (钩状的) tool. Then the crow used the hooked tool to lift a pig’s heart from a small container to eat. Many years later, researchers found that bending tools was in fact not that unusual for New Caledonian crows. As part of the Corvid family of birds, the brains of New Caledonian crows and others within the family have been studied more closely. Corvids have shown amazing cognitive (认知的) abilities. Unlike humans, corvids do not have a neocortex — a brain structure that allows for advanced cognitive development. Instead, their brains are filled with neurons (神经元) which have enabled the bird to have similar mental capacities like humans. According to a paper published earlier this year, New Caledonians are particular about the plant stem (茎) which they use to make their hooked tools and are able find out the best plant stem. They are also capable of looking for that plant stem even when it is disguised (伪装) with leaves from a different plant species. Crows are also able to use their abilities to solve advanced problems. Crows also seem to use their cleverness for fun, much like humans do, as young birds love to play. New Caledonian crows have emotions and memories and are cognitively skilled animals. They just might not be so different from us humans after all! 12. How did Betty surprise the scientists? A. She made a hooked tool. B. She escaped from her cage. C. She managed to lift a heavy container. D. She showed great interest in pig’s heart. 13. What do we know about New Caledonian crows? A. They remain unknown to humans. B. They are quite different from other corvids. C. Their brain structure is similar to that of humans. D. Their cognitive abilities are decided by neurons. 14. What does the underlined word “particular ” in paragraph 4 mean ? A. Anxious. B. Happy. C. Picky. D. Curious. 15. What is the text mainly about ? A. The intelligence of crows. B. The survival skills of crows. C. The development of the crow family. D. The memories of crows. A 13. D 14. C 15. 根据第二段的“In 2002, a crow named Betty wowed Oxford University scientists by picking up a piece of wire in her cage and bending it at one end to make a hooked tool.”(2002年,一只名叫贝蒂的乌鸦在她的笼子里捡起一根铁丝,把它的一端弯曲成一个钩状工具,这让牛津大学的科学家们大为惊叹。) 故选A。 根据第三段的“Corvids have shown amazing cognitive (认知的) abilities. Unlike humans, corvids do not have a neocortex — a brain structure that allows for advanced cognitive development. Instead, their brains are filled with neurons which have enabled the bird to have similar mental capacities like humans.”(新喀里多尼亚乌鸦表现出惊人的认知能力。 根据第四段“According to a paper published earlier this year, New Caledonians are particular about the plant stem which they use to make their hooked tools and are able find out the best plant stem. They are also capable of looking for that plant stem even when it is disguised (伪装) with leaves from a different plant species.”(根据今年早些时候发表的一篇论文,新喀里多尼亚乌鸦对它们用来制作钩形工具的植物茎particular,并且能够找到最好的植物茎。 通读全文,尤其是第一段的“However, there is a species whose intelligence is far more advanced and perhaps more similar to humans than we’d thought — crows.”(然而,有一种物种的智力比我们想象的要先进得多,可能也更接近于人类——乌鸦。) 故选A。 How to ease the “smell of toil” Recently, the “smell of toil (班味)” has become a popular topic among the young. Some people joke about how their once good-looking faces now look tired and pale, with dull eyes and thinning hair. The “smell of toil” can come from work pressure, worries about the future, and not having enough personal freedom. It appears in every corner of our daily work: in the office, on the bus, by the roadside... This seems a big and annoying challenge._____16_____ Embrace yourself and experience new things. The first step to feeling better is to accept yourself, no matter what you have experienced during work time or how toughly your boss always treat you. Maybe you are discouraged by your work schedule. Be proud of who you are, and don’t be scared to try new things. _____17_____ But if you don’t try, you won’t know what you’re able to do. To some degree, only by going through something you have never tried, can you find your potential. Separate work from personal life. _____18_____ It’s no secret that our jobs can have a substantial impact on our lives outside work including our body health and emotions. Thus, it’s of vital importance to create a clear line between the two. After work, don’t let your job bother you and enjoy your personal time. _____19_____ Instead of spending your lunch break looking at your phone, take a short walk or spend 20 minutes in a park. Being in nature, even for a little while, can make you feel more energetic and less stressed. Also, you can engage in energizing activities after work, such as jogging, working out in the gym. Of course, a piece of soft music or a calming film when you have a rest can somewhat ease your smell of toil. Don’t delay tasks and focus on rest. Many people put off their tasks when they get home, but delaying things only creates more stress._____20_____ Also, quit unnecessary social events if you feel too tired. Spending time on rest will help you feel better and more ready for the next day. A. Arrange your break time wisely B. Hang out in a park C. But there are various ways to help people ease such a “smell” D. Try to finish small tasks quickly E. One reason why people feel tired is that they mix work and personal life F. Sometimes you are stopped from trying something new because of fear G. Experiencing different things helps develop positive mindsets 【答案】16. C 17. F 18. E 19. A 20. 【16题详解】 设空位于首段段尾,应是起到引出主题的作用,根据本文标题“How to ease the “smell of toil” (如何缓解“班味”)”可知,本文主题是讲述如何缓解“班味”,再根据前文“The “smell of toil” can come from work pressure, worries about the future, and not having enough personal freedom. It appears in every corner of our daily work: in the office, on the bus, by the roadside... This seems a big and annoying challenge. (“班味”可能来自工作压力,对未来的担忧,以及没有足够的个人自由。它出现在我们日常工作的每个角落:办公室里、公交车上、路边……这似乎是一个巨大而恼人的挑战。)”可知,C项“But there are various ways to help people ease such a “smell” (但有很多方法可以帮助人们缓解这种“气味”)”和前文构成转折关系,并引出文章主题。故选C项。 【17题详解】 根据前文“Maybe you are discouraged by your work schedule. Be proud of who you are, and don’t be scared to try new things. (也许你的工作安排让你感到气馁。为自己感到骄傲,不要害怕尝试新事物。)”可知,此处在讲述要勇于尝试新事物,所以F项“Sometimes you are stopped from trying something new because of fear (有时你会因为恐惧而停止尝试新事物)”是对前文的进一步说明,并和后文“But if you don’t try, you won’t know what you’re able to do. (但如果你不尝试,你就不知道你能做什么。)”构成转折关系。故选F项。 【18题详解】 设空位于段首,为本段中心句,根据后文“It’s no secret that our jobs can have a substantial impact on our lives outside work including our body health and emotions. Thus, it’s of vital importance to create a clear line between the two. After work, don’t let your job bother you and enjoy your personal time. (众所周知,我们的工作可以对我们工作之外的生活产生重大影响,包括我们的身体健康和情绪。因此,在两者之间划清界限是至关重要的。下班后,不要让你的工作打扰你,享受你的私人时间。)”可知,本段主要讲述不要让你的工作打扰你,享受你的私人时间,所以E项“One reason why people feel tired is that they mix work and personal life (人们感到疲倦的一个原因是他们把工作和个人生活混在一起了)”符合本段主题,为本段中心句。故选E项。 【19题详解】 设空为本段小标题,根据后文“Instead of spending your lunch break looking at your phone, take a short walk or spend 20 minutes in a park. Being in nature, even for a little while, can make you feel more energetic and less stressed. Also, you can engage in energizing activities after work, such as jogging, working out in the gym. Of course, a piece of soft music or a calming film when you have a rest can somewhat ease your smell of toil. 故选A项。 【20题详解】 根据前文“Many people put off their tasks when they get home, but delaying things only creates more stress. (许多人一回到家就把工作推迟,但拖延只会带来更多压力。)”可知,本段主要讲述,不要拖延工作,所以D项“Try to finish small tasks quickly (尽量快速完成小任务)”符合本段主题,是对前句提出的问题的建议。故选D项。 第三部分:语言运用(共两节,满分 30 分) 第一节(共 15 小题;每小题 1 分,满分 15 分) It was a warm, sunny Saturday afternoon some fifteen or sixteen years ago. 故填which。 故填to。 故填strategic/strategically。 故填Its。 have the ability to do sth. 故填to handle。 故填an。 the key to中的to是介词,后接动词 -ing形式作宾语,所以用building。 Dear Bob, _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours, Li Hua 【答案】Dear Bob, So sorry do I feel to hear that you are feeling lonely without friends in your new school. It is my great privilege to put forward some practical suggestions. First and foremost, it is understandable that you haven’t made new friends in a brand new environment. Making friends takes time and skills. What is high on the agenda is that you take the initiative to start small talk with your classmates or roommates, which can naturally pave the way to a closer relationship. What’s more, it is strongly recommended that you create more chances for yourself to make new friends by taking an active part in extra-curricular activities. Engaging yourself in various activities can not only help you better adapt to the new school life in a short time, but also ease your loneliness and enrich your school life. Did you obtain any scholarships in school?” asked the director casually. The youth hesitated (犹豫) for a fraction and answered, “None.” The director was kind of surprised, then he asked, “As far as I know, the school fees were so high. Was it your father who paid for it?” The youth answered, “My father passed away (死了) when I was one year old. It was my mother who paid for my fees.” The answer made the director feel curious about the youth’s family, so he said, “It must be very difficult for a single mom to bring you up. May I know your mother’s job?” The youth answered, “My mother works as a clothes cleaner. She’s always busy and washes dirty clothes all day. I once admired other classmates whose parents could take them to the park, but my mother never stopped working. “The director requested the youth to show his hands. The hands were white and beautiful. When he went back, he happily requested his mother to let him clean her hands. His mother was puzzled at first, then had mixed feelings and showed her hands. He noticed that her hands were so wrinkled. Some bruises were so painful that his mother’s hands trembled even when they were cleaned with warm water. This was the first time he realized that it was this pair of hands that enabled him to get a decent education. After cleaning her hands, the youth quietly cried and washed the remaining clothes. The next morning, the youth went to the director’s office with red and swollen eyes. The director asked, “What did you do yesterday?” The youth answered, “I cleaned my mother’s hands, and helped her finish cleaning all the remaining clothes.” The director smiled and asked, “Did you learn something from that?” The youth said, “By helping my mother, I realize how difficult it is to get something done. I also know what appreciation is. Without my mother, there would not be the successful me today.” The director said, “I want to recruit a person who can appreciate the help of others and know the sufferings of others to get things done. A Ordinary and warm-hearted. B. Appealing and open-minded. C. Humorous and well-educated D. Hard-working and strong-willed. C If Confucius (孔子)were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. D When thinking about intelligence, we often place humans at the top of the ranks. A She made a hooked tool. 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2. 5 分,满分 12. 5 分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余项。 How to ease the “smell of toil” Recently, the “smell of toil (班味)” has become a popular topic among the young.
