Best language learning apps
Duolingo
The app doesn’t restrict how many languages you can try to learn at the same time. I use Duolingo to practice Spanish and German. In the app, you can access resources such as Duolingo Stories, which can allow you to check your comprehension skills as you go. I also subscribe to Premium for $10 per month which includes an ad-free experience and downloadable lessons.
Memrise
One of my favorite parts of Memrise is its short videos about how real locals express different phrases in conversation. A few lessons are available for free daily, but the full program is accessible if you subscribe to Memrise Pro. There are three plans — one month for $9, a year for $30 or three months for $19.
Busuu
When you sign up for Busuu, you select the language you want to learn, and the app helps you determine how advanced you are with it and why you want to learn it, and to what level. From there, you set a daily study goal. Premium costs about $6 per month for a year.
Lirica
If you listen to any song enough, you’ll learn all the words through repetition, even if they’re in a different language. But how do you figure out what they mean? This is where Lirica comes in. This app is unique in how it teaches Spanish. Instead of traditional teaching methods for learning a language, Lirica uses popular music by Latin artists to help you learn the Spanish language and grammar. Lirica has a one-week free trial and then it’s about $4 per month.
1. Which app is best for learning multiple languages at a time?
A. Lirica. B. Busuu. C. Memrise. D. Duolingo.
2. How much should you pay for a quarterly subscription to Memrise Pro?
A. $9. B. $19. C. $28. D. $30.
3. What is special about Lirica?
A. It offers a one-month free trial. B. It helps users set a daily study goal.
C. It hires Latin artists to teach Spanish. D. It enables users to learn Spanish through music.

Chinese paleontologists(古生物学家) have determined that, about 47 million years ago, subtropical forests once existed on the high-altitude Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
The conclusion, which appears in a paper published on Tuesday, was drawn based on the large number of fossils found in the Baingoin Basin at an altitude of nearly 5,000 meters during the second comprehensive scientific expedition to the plateau.
A joint team from the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden conducted the research on the fossils. By combining the findings and models, the team recreated the climate and altitude that existed 47 million years ago, showing that the central plateau had an altitude of just 1,500 meters and an annual average temperature of 19℃, says Su Tao, a researcher from the tropical botanical garden and first author of the paper.
“It was covered by thick forest and was rich in water and grass. It is fair to call it the ‘Shangri-La’ of ancient times,” Su adds.
The researchers have also found over 70 plant fossils, the majority of which are most closely related to plant life in today’s subtropical or tropical regions.
“This is enough to show that the central part of the now high-altitude, freezing Qinghai-Tibet Plateau had flourishing subtropical plants 47 million years ago,” Su says.
The findings provide new evidence for the study of the evolutionary history of biodiversity and the evolution of the plateau’s landscape, according to Zhou Zhekun, the paper’s corresponding author and a researcher at the tropical botanical garden.
China launched the second comprehensive scientific expedition to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in June 2017, 40 years after the first. Lasting up to 10 years, the expedition will conduct a series of studies focusing on the plateau’s glaciers, its biodiversity and ecological changes, and will also monitor the changes in climate.
4. How did the paper come to the conclusion?
A. Through the observation of the Baingoin basin.
B. Through the fossils found in a scientific expedition.
C. Through the drawing of a large number of fossils.
D. Through the adventure on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.
5. What can be inferred according to Su Tao?
A. The average altitude of the plateau was 1,500 meters.
B. “Shangri-La” means a place with abundant water and grass.
C. The flourishing subtropical plants have covered the plateau.
D. The fossils found by researchers are tropical or subtropical plants now.
6. Where might the passage come from?
A. The Times. B. The Wall Street Journal. C. Chinese National Geography. D. The Economist.
7. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To instruct. B. To educate. C. To persuade. D. To inform.

Scientists often compare coral reefs(珊瑚礁) to underwater rainforests, yet unlike the leafy plant base of a forest, corals are animals. The soft creatures are naturally half-transparent and get their brilliant color from algae(藻类) living inside them. When corals experience stress from hot temperatures or pollution, they halt the interdependent relationship with algae, typically pushing them out and turning white. Corals are still alive when they are white, but they’re at risk and many eventually die, turning dark brown.
Scientists around the world are looking for means to protect and maybe increase corals. One common option is to create more protected areas — essentially national parks in the ocean. Beyond nature preserves, some conservationists are looking to more hands-on methods. One research center in the Florida Keys is exploring a form of natural selection to keep corals remaining. The reef system in the Keys has been hit hard by climate change and pollution, which is especially tough, because corals there help support fisheries worth $ 100 million every year.
To keep the wild ecosystem alive, Erinn Muller, the center’s director, and her team are harvesting samples of the corals that survived the environmental stress naturally, keeping them to make them reproduce, and then reattaching them to the reef. They have 46,000 corals on plastic frames under the sea. So far, the center has regrown over 70,000 corals from five different species on damaged reefs.
In The Bahamas, Ross Cunning, a research biologist at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium, focuses on corals with genes that could make them natural candidates for restoration projects. He published a study of two Bahamian reefs, one that survived an extreme 2015 heat wave, and one that didn’t. "We think their ability to deal with these higher temperatures is built into their genes," says Cunning. There’s evidence of corals evolving more quickly to resist rapidly warming climate. The big question scientists need investigate, adds Gunning, is how much more heat corals can adapt to.
8. What does the underlined word "halt" in the first paragraph mean?
A. End. B. Develop. C. Strengthen. D. Weaken.
9. What do Muller and her team do to save corals?
A. Restore the damaged reefs. B. Grow corals by hand underwater.
C. Create more protected areas. D. Move corals to unpolluted areas.
10. What do Gunning’s words suggest?
A. Many corals have been genetically improved.
B. Cooling down the waters is key to rescuing corals.
C. Reasons for corals surviving heat waves are shocking.
D. The highest temperature corals can survive is unclear.
11. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Relationship between corals and algae B. Efforts made to save corals
C. Impact of climate warming on corals D. Survival crisis faced by coral reefs

Over half of Canadian youth and young adults who have consumed energy drinks have experienced negative health effects as a result, according to a study from the University of Waterloo.
In a nationwide survey of Canadian youth, over half of those who had ever consumed an energy drink had reported experiencing a negative health event. Currently, Canadian legislation is meant to prohibit energy drinks from being marketed to children and energy drinks are not recommended to be used by people participating in sporting activities.
"Most risk assessments to date have used coffee as a reference for estimating the health effects of energy drinks. However, it is clear that these products cause a greater health risk," said David Hammond, a professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Waterloo. "The health effects from energy drinks could be due to the different ingredients, or the ways in which they are consumed, including with alcohol or during physical activity. Besides, the findings suggest a need to increase monitoring of health effects from these products."
In conducting the study, the researchers surveyed 2,055 young Canadians aged 12 to 24. Of those who had reported consuming energy drinks at some point in their lives, 55.4 percent reported experiencing a negative health event. Of those reporting negative health events, 24.7 percent reported experiencing a fast heartbeat, 24.1 percent reported difficulty sleeping and 18.3 percent reported experiencing headaches.
"The number of health effects observed in our study suggests that more should be done to restrict consumption among children and youth," said Hammond. "At the moment, there are no restrictions on children purchasing energy drinks, and they are marketed at the point-of-sale in grocery stores, as well as advertising that targets children."
12. Who are forbidden to take energy drinks in Canada?
A. Children. B. Athletes. C. Old people. D. Healthy people.
13. What makes energy drinks have negative effects?
A. The different ingredients in them. B. The coffee contained in them.
C. The quantity consumed at a time. D. The place where they are consumed.
14. What writing skill is used in paragraph 4?
A. Comparing results. B. Listing figures.
C. Giving examples. D. Raising questions.
15. What can we infer from Hammond’s words in the last paragraph?
A. It is illegal for children to buy energy drinks.
B. Energy drinks are sold only in grocery stores.
C. Some children actors advertise energy drinks.
D. It’s a long way to ban children from energy drinks.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
You’ve seen other people flying kites, watching their paper creations float up into the clouds on a windy day. 16 Kite flying isn’t hard, and it’s a lot of fun!
The first step is to get a kite and find a large, open area. Then wait for a nice windy day. 17 Otherwise, kites can get hung up on either of them. Parks with lots of grass and beaches are both great places to try kite flying.
If you have a friend to help you, have one person hold the kite while the other person holds the spool(线轴) of string. The one with the kite should hold it overhead in both hands and throw it lightly up into the wind. If the wind is strong enough, it will catch the kite and lift it up, pulling the string tight. This works well on windy days, but what if the wind isn’t strong enough to catch your kite? Then you need to let out some string and have your friend run with the kite behind him/her. 18
Once the wind catches your kite, start letting out string, little by little. 19 It’s somewhere between fifty and a hundred feet overhead. Spread your legs to keep yourself firmly rooted to the ground, and hold the spool with both hands. If it flies too high, you can reel(卷) in the string a little.
20 When the kite is close to the ground, have someone catch it so it doesn’t get torn or broken. Wind up the rest of your string and keep your kite safe until the next time you’re ready to fly it.
A. As you fly your kite, keep an eye on it.
B. Are you ready to give it a try yourself?
C. To finish flying, reel in the kite slowly.
D. Keep going till your kite is at the height you want.
E. With this added burst of speed, the kite should fly.
F. Your perfect location shouldn’t have any trees or power lines.
G. Keep flying your kite until you feel it’s safe in the wind again.

The last race of the day was over. My breathing gradually stilled along with the ripples in the pool, but I stayed in the water, watching sadly as the winners gathered for the medal ceremony.
“Don’t look so sad,” I heard a voice say behind me. I turned around to see a tall, blond, blue-eyed man standing on the edge of the pool. “You came in fourth, but you are the best in your country.” he said smiling. “I’m Ken Schafer, and you?”
“Rima Datta.”
“And how old are you, Rima?”
“Fourteen, Sir,” I replied lifting myself out of the water. Ken was a swimming coach from California and asked me about my life as a swimmer until then.
My eldest brother, Anil, had taught me how to swim, but I had no real training until I was nine when a coach from the National Institute of Sports came for just three months a year to train the boys at Mayo College, where our father taught. She set aside a couple of hours a week for the daughters of the staff. It was she who had corrected my mistakes and encouraged me to take part in competitions.
Surprised to hear how little steady training I had had, Ken introduced me to the National Institute of Sports in Patiala to be trained in this summer. The train was hard, and I felt quite lonely away from my parents and all that was familiar. But it was Ken, with his tireless enthusiasm, his passion for swimming, and his faith in me that kept me focused.
I won my first gold medal at the national championship that year, a fact that filled me with immense joy and Ken with a sense of satisfaction that his work with me was paying off. Yet he realized that what I really needed was a team to train with and year-round steady coaching.
Then he persuaded my parents to allow me to go to California and train there for a year. He even helped find out a host family for me.

Alone on the long flight to California, I was filled with doubts, as I had never lived with a strange family.

Alone on the long flight to California,I was filled with doubts,as I had never lived with a strange family. How
would I manage to live with people I had never met before? What if I didn't get along with the host family?Would
I fit in?I needn't have worried. From the first moment at the airport where they had come to receive me,I knew
things would be all right.Their smiles and their words of welcome as they greeted me felt like a warm embrace.I
could not have found a kinder, more generous family than theirs.
The kindess of the host family and Ken gave me all the practical and emotional support I needed to train in a
swinuming club ofCalifornia.During my stay there,it was the mother of my host family who drove me to and from
the training center every day.She could cook delicious food and she knew how to comfort me while I was
homesick. The training was hard, yet it was Ken who always showed me concern and encouraged me to keep going.
My swimming performance improved slowly but steadily. From those kind people I have learned generosity, love,

I am Li Hua, a Chinese student who is taking a summer course in New York now. I have learned from your advertisement that a Chinese china exhibition will be held in the local museum, so I am writing to apply for the position as a student volunteer.
I can speak fluent English as well as standard Chinese. Besides, I once learned a lot about china in our school china club and have been crazy about collecting varieties of cups made of china. Young and energetic, I’m keen on communicating with foreign friends.
I would be grateful if my application could meet with your approval. I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,

【参考范文】
Alone on the long flight to California, I was filled with doubts, as I had never lived with a strange family. How would I manage to live with people I had never met before? What if I didn’t get along with the host family? Would I fit in? I needn’t have worried. From the first moment at the airport where they had come to receive me, I knew things would be all right. Their smiles and their words of welcome as they greeted me felt like a warm embrace. I could not have found a kinder, more generous family than theirs.
The kindness of the host family and Ken gave me all the practical and emotional support I needed to train in a swimming club of California. During my stay there, it was the mother of my host family who drove me to and from the training center every day. She could cook delicious food and she knew how to comfort me while I was homesick. The training was hard, yet it was Ken who always showed me concern and encouraged me to keep going. My swimming performance improved slowly but steadily. From those kind people I have learned generosity, love, and kindness.
