I had no greater power of concentration than the lifeless stare of a goldfish. As a writer, I was ashamed to admit that my love of books had been compromised by a brain that simply could not sit still. So, this year I committed myself to restoring books to the place that they held in my life before the Internet broke my brain. My goal was 52 books: It seemed like an impossible task. A400-page book will take the average person around eight hours to read. Finding the time to read was a challenge but here’s how I did it. Firstly, I decided to treat my mind like a misbehaving child who needs some rules laid down. Then I decided that I would read for an hour or two at a time without distraction each day. It was something I hadn’t done in years and it was scary how difficult it was. In his book, The Distracted Mind, Larry Rosen says that the more we practice spending time away from our electronic devices, the calmer and more focused we become. And this is what I found. Again and again, I would gently bring myself back to the page, resisting the urge to reach for that screen. I took inspiration from Nikki Gemmell, who describes in On Quiet, how investing in a safe to lock away her family’s devices for long periods had opened up a space for deep reflection. For me, finding that quiet time meant finding time in my day just to read. It was like a date between me and my book. And it meant actively choosing to read at tunes when I normally would reach for my phone. I read on the train, at the park, in bed at night and on lunch breaks. By reawakening my love with books I created a sacred space where I could press pause and found inspiration, knowledge, reflection and escape. In our modern world, reading is a powerful and beneficial way for us to slow down and be ourselves. 41. What problem does the author describe in the first paragraph? A. The author was determined to make rules for himself. C. The author was buried in reading for an hour or two at once. D. The author decided to get involved in reading with people around. 43. The author saw reading as a date between himself and his book because A. it was a relationship he tried to get B. it was a common and beneficial social activity C. it was a special, dedicated time for himself D. it required meeting new and inspirational people 44. What can we infer about the author? A. The author benefited a lot from reading books. B. The author got inspiration when he reached for the screen. C. But it’s difficult, even on a good day, to admit we are struggling, to ask for help or to apologize when we are out of line. However, keeping problems to ourselves can create even more long-term complications. After all, unacknowledged feelings and frustrations rarely stay under the rug. That is why it is important to figure out how to openly express one’s feelings or thoughts even when that form of expression leaves us feeling exposed or uncomfortable. Researchers Anna Bruk and Sabine Scholl at the University of Mannheim refer to this form of genuine, intentional emotional exposure, done in spite of one’s fears, as “showing vulnerability”. Unlike other forms of self-expression, this act always carries risk, such as the possibility that others may see someone as weak or even incompetent in consequence. The good news is that our worries about the negative evaluations of others may not be entirely reflected in the way people actually see us in difficult moments. The researchers conducted six experiments and revealed the results: Across a variety of situations, such as asking for help or admitting a mistake, people saw their own displays of vulnerability more negatively than others did. They refer to this pattern of conflicting perceptions as the “beautiful mess effect”. It’s important to be aware of this mismatch, as it can prevent people from sharing their true feelings and needs. Then how can people overcome the beautiful mess effect? Actually, the concept of self-compassion can be of great help when it comes to finding beauty in the mess of one’s own shortcomings. Self-compassion could influence how people see their own display of vulnerability After all, vulnerable situations can cause a lot of shame and fear, and these moments are precisely when self-compassion is most helpful. For instance, consider admitting a mistake. People who treat themselves as they would treat a good friend wouldn’t shame themselves for being imperfect. Instead, they would remind themselves that imperfection is normal. In addition, a mindful approach to the mistake would lessen the need to either over exaggerate or deny its significance. Such a compassionate reaction to one’s own vulnerability, in turn, could make it easier to be vulnerable with others. As a result, self-compassionate people see their own show of vulnerability in a more positive light — closer to the way they see the same behavior in others. Luckily, our level of self-compassion can be intentionally cultivated. For example, journaling exercises can help people change the way they think about their own strengths and weaknesses by writing about one’s feelings with awareness and acceptance, offering oneself words of support, and reflecting on how others share difficult experiences. By developing a kind, mindful attitude towards ourselves we can become more comfortable with showing our vulnerabilities. This practice, in turn, can strengthen our close relationships. 46. According to the passage, the beautiful mess effect probably occurs when we________ A. cultivate self-compassion B. have negative perceptions C. express our feelings openly D. reveal weaknesses in hardships 47. According to the passage, how does self-compassion help people deal with vulnerable situations? A. It teaches them to seek constant approval from others. B. It helps them exaggerate the importance of their feelings. C. It encourages them to ignore their mistakes to avoid shame. D. It allows them to view their imperfections with understanding and balance. 48. It can be learned from the passage that________ A. self-expression decreases the risks of negative evaluations of others B. self-compassionate people are more likely to display their true feelings C. the way people view their strengths and weaknesses can hardly be changed D. developing a mindful attitude towards ourselves helps reduce our shortcomings 49. What does the author mainly emphasize in the last paragraph? A. Journaling exercises can fully eliminate vulnerability feelings. B. Reflecting on others’ shared hardships helps avoid showing weaknesses. C. A mindful attitude naturally leads to effortless acceptance of weaknesses. D. People can become kinder to themselves via intentional reflection and writing. 50. The main purpose of the passage is to________. A. present a way to overcome the beautiful mess effect B. stress the importance of exposing our vulnerability C. discuss how to reflect on our strengths and weaknesses D. analyze why we should find beauty in our shortcomings 【答案】46. D 47. D 48. B 49. D 50. 根据第二段“Across a variety of situations, such as asking for help or admitting a mistake, people saw their own displays of vulnerability more negatively than others did. They refer to this pattern of conflicting perceptions as the “beautiful mess effect”.(在各种情况下,比如求助或承认错误,人们对自己展现脆弱的看法比他人的看法更消极。研究人员将这种认知冲突模式称为“美丽混乱效应”)”可知,“美丽混乱效应”发生在人们在困境中暴露自身弱点(如求助、认错)时。故选D项。 【47题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“People who treat themselves as they would treat a good friend wouldn’t shame themselves for being imperfect. Instead, they would remind themselves that imperfection is normal. In addition, a mindful approach to the mistake would lessen the need to either over exaggerate or deny its significance. (像对待好朋友一样对待自己的人,不会因不完美而羞愧,反而会提醒自己不完美是正常的。此外,以正念态度看待错误,会减少夸大或否认其重要性的需求)”可知,自我同情让人们以理解和平衡的心态看待自身不完美。故选D项。 【48题详解】 推理判断题。根据第五段“Such a compassionate reaction to one’s own vulnerability, in turn, could make it easier to be vulnerable with others. As a result, self-compassionate people see their own show of vulnerability in a more positive light — closer to the way they see the same behavior in others. (对自身脆弱的同情反应,反过来会让人们更容易向他人展现脆弱。因此,自我同情的人以更积极的眼光看待自己的脆弱——更接近于他们看待他人同样行为的方式)”可推知,有自我同情心的人更可能展现真实感受。故选B项。 【49题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“Luckily, our level of self-compassion can be intentionally cultivated. For example, journaling exercises can help people change the way they think about their own strengths and weaknesses by writing about one’s feelings with awareness and acceptance, offering oneself words of support, and reflecting on how others share difficult experiences. By developing a kind, mindful attitude towards ourselves we can become more comfortable with showing our vulnerabilities.(幸运的是,我们的自我同情能力是可以刻意培养的。例如,日记练习能帮助人们改变看待自身优缺点的方式——通过有意识地、以接纳的态度写下自己的感受,给自己一些鼓励的话语,并反思他人如何共同经历困境。对自己培养出友善、专注的态度后,我们在展露脆弱时会更从容)”可知,作者强调人们可通过刻意反思(正念)和写作(日记)变得更善待自己。故选D项。 【50题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“We all have weaknesses, and all know hardship. But it’s difficult, even on a good day, to admit we are struggling, to ask for help or to apologize when we are out of line. However, keeping problems to ourselves can create even more long-term complications. After all, unacknowledged feelings and frustrations rarely stay under the rug. That is why it is important to figure out how to openly express one’s feelings or thoughts even when that form of expression leaves us feeling exposed or uncomfortable.(我们每个人都有弱点,也都经历过困境。 故选A项。 D In a recent article, Markham Heid shares with us an unusual life crisis. At 41, he has built what many would regard as the good life: he has a family; he is healthy, productive, and creative; he has time to travel, read, exercise, and see friends. Yet, he feels that “something is off.” To fight against this feeling, some of his friends have turned to special retreats, while others try to solve it through fitness. What makes Heid’s problem somewhat odd is that it does not seem to arise from anything specific. If he had lost his job, had no time for himself, or was struggling in his marriage, the feeling would be understandable. In the history of philosophy, there have been many attempts to understand such a powerful but objectless feeling. Boredom, anxiety, depression and despair are some of the descriptions this mood has received. Heid ends up attributing his crisis to the lack of new experiences. The Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard calls this the “illusion of crop rotation”, the idea that changing the environment frequently can save us from this mood. The German philosopher Martin Heidegger also describes a similar state: one may still be surrounded by the same people and activities, but these no longer engage us as they used to. He calls it a kind of “anxiety” created by nothing in particular. No wonder the psychologist Sigmund Freud once described anxiety as a “riddle.” But what really drives this mood is not the need for new experiences. It is not even the particulars of our individual lives or the cultures we belong to, but that we have been given a life to live in the first place, the taste of possibility that comes with being alive. This mood is not due to doubts like “Do I have enough hobbies?” or “Have I achieved my goal?” It is related to the more fundamental questions like “What does it mean to be human?” “What am I supposed to do with the fact that I was given a life?” and “What kind of life is possible for me?” This is why this mood is likely to appear frequently in our life. This is why once many of our life goals are fulfilled, we begin to wonder what life itself is for. These questions never have a final answer and they can always leave us with a great sense of agony about who we are and how we should go on. Nevertheless, recognizing that these doubts are there, and that they matter, can at least allow us to know what may be missing, even when everything is good. 51. Which of the following can best describe Markham Heid’s crisis? A. It results from a need for change. B. It is caused by uncertainties in life. C. It is a confusion about life’s meaning. D. It leads to disconnection from family and friends. 52. The phrase “illusion of crop rotation” in paragraph 2 implies that________ A. people must stay active to keep life interesting B. our emotions depend mainly on external circumstances C. new experiences can permanently renew our sense of meaning D. changing surroundings cannot truly free us from inner emptiness 53. What does the author say is the real cause of this mood? A. Particulars of our individual lives or the cultures we belong to. B. Wondering what life itself is for once our life goals are fulfilled. C. The awareness of being given a life to live and the possibilities. D. Doubts about whether one has enough hobbies or has achieved personal goals. 54. According to the author, how can the crisis in the passage be dealt with? A. By studying philosophy. B. By developing new hobbies. C. By going travelling frequently. D. By embracing the objectless feeling. 55. Which would be the best title for the passage? A. What leads to a Life Crisis B. Boredom Makes Us Human C. How to Fix a Mid-life Crisis D. Anxiety Gives Us Life Goals 【答案】51. C 52. D 53. C 54. D 55. 根据第一段可知,Heid拥有家庭、健康、时间等“美好生活”要素,却莫名感到“不对劲”,再结合第二段“Heid ends up attributing his crisis to the lack of new experiences.(Heid最终将他的危机归因于缺乏新的经验。)”及后文对“生命意义”相关问题的探讨,如““What does it mean to be human?”“What am I supposed to do with the fact that I was given a life?”(“作为人意味着什么?”“既然我拥有生命,我该做些什么?”)” 根据第二段“...the “illusion of crop rotation”, the idea that changing the environment frequently can save us from this mood.(“illusion of crop rotation”,即频繁改变环境能让我们摆脱这种情绪。)”及后文“The German philosopher Martin Heidegger also describes a similar state: one may still be surrounded by the same people and activities, but these no longer engage us as they used to. He calls it a kind of “anxiety” created by nothing in particular. It is not even the particulars of our individual lives or the cultures we belong to, but that we have been given a life to live in the first place, the taste of possibility that comes with being alive. (但真正驱动这种情绪的不是对新体验的需求,也不是我们个人生活或所属文化的细节,而是我们首先被赋予了生命,以及活着所带来的可能性。)”可知,情绪的真正原因是“意识到拥有生命及生命的可能性”。故选C项。 【54题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Nevertheless, recognizing that these doubts are there, and that they matter, can at least allow us to know what may be missing, even when everything is good. (然而,承认这些疑惑的存在及其重要性,至少能让我们在一切顺利时,知道可能缺少了什么。)” 可知,应对危机的方式是“接纳这种无具体对象的感受(疑惑)”。故选D项。 【55题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第二段“In the history of philosophy, there have been many attempts to understand such a powerful but objectless feeling. The last thing I wanted to hear when my government-sponsored scholarship was withdrawn during my final year of college was: “Things are working out for your own good. Just give them some time.” Those words just stirred a lot of anger in me. Then I read the story of the Chinese bamboo farmer, which gave me a different view on life. The seed of the Chinese bamboo is planted in the ground like every seed. It is watered, and fed with nutrients daily, but it shows no immediate physical response and doesn’t appear to grow. The farmer continues to water and feed the seed in year one, year two, and year three. No growth is seen until the fourth year, when the seed finally breaks through the ground. Then, in the space of just five weeks, it grows ninety feet tall. The Chinese bamboo grows to its full capacity within 5 years. Despite not seeing an immediate result the farmer had trust in what he was doing. He continued to water and feed the plant for four years, because he believed that if he played his own role and did all that a farmer was supposed to do, then he would be given his reward at the right time. That trust and patience is what kept the farmer persistently feeding his seed for four years before enjoying the reward in the end. Life is not always straightforward. Most often, it’s not a matter of 5+5=10 (Sum 1). Life can be more like 2+1+2+0+0+0+1+2+0+0+1+1=10 (Sum 2). Both sums lead to the same result, but through quite different paths and processes. To be mature is to accept that things might look rough right now but the story can still have a great ending. We might live in a microwave generation where everything seems to happen instantly; but many things still obey the laws of nature. Just doing what you are supposed to be doing, having patience like the Chinese bamboo farmer, and trusting that things will work out for you can help you get through the toughest times. 56. What happened to the author in the final-year of college? (No more than 10 words) _______________________________________________________________________________________ 57 What does the underlined word in Paragraph 1 probably mean? (1 word) _______________________________________________________________________________________ 58. How does the Chinese bamboo grow in the fourth year? A. A. present a way to overcome the beautiful mess effect B. stress the importance of exposing our vulnerability C. discuss how to reflect on our strengths and weaknesses D. analyze why we should find beauty in our shortcomings D In a recent article, Markham Heid shares with us an unusual life crisis. Anxiety Gives Us Life Goals The last thing I wanted to hear when my government-sponsored scholarship was withdrawn during my final year of college was: “Things are working out for your own good. Despite not seeing an immediate result, the farmer had trust in what he was doing. 56.
