Beneath the waves, the ocean floor was largely unknown. That all changed thanks to the work of Marie Tharp, a pioneering cartographer and geologist. In the 1940s, few women were accepted in science. Tharp, however, was determined to make her mark. She partnered with oceanographer Bruce Heezen, who collected sonar (声呐) data from ships that crossed the Atlantic Ocean. The data was just a string of numbers and graphs — without someone to translate it into a visual format, it was difficult to interpret. That was where Tharp came in. She began plotting thousands of data points, a painstaking process that required a mix of mathematical skill and artistic intuition. In the process of her mapping, Tharp discovered the central valley of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a place where the ocean floor was pulling apart. This was exactly the kind of evidence that could support the controversial (争议的) theory of continental drift, which was largely dismissed by the scientific community at the time. Convincing the scientific community would prove difficult, since many geologists had long believed that the ocean floor was flat and featureless. Tharp and Heezen turned to art to create visual representations of the ocean floor. This produced stunning maps that brought Tharp’s findings to life in a way that no scientific paper could. The beauty of these maps captured the imaginations of scientists and the public alike. Tharp’s maps, and the evidence they provided, became a cornerstone of the modern understanding of geology. Her work proved that the ocean floor was not static (静态的) but a dynamic, changing landscape. For many years, Tharp’s contributions were overshadowed by her male colleagues — it was Bruce Heezen’s name that often appeared on scientific papers. Tharp worked behind the scenes, receiving little recognition for her groundbreaking work. Today, satellite and sonar technology enable us to map the ocean floor with incredible precision, but none of this would have been possible without Tharp’s pioneering efforts. 4. What underlying reason motivated Tharp’s commitment to science? A. A request from Heezen. B. A need to store sonar data. C. A belief in continental drift. D. A desire to establish herself. 5. Why was Tharp’s discovery of the central valley significant? A. It backed a then-dismissed theory. B It showed sonar data was unreliable. C. It confirmed the ocean floor was flat. D. It questioned a once-popular technology. 6. How did Tharp and Heezen make Tharp’s findings widely accepted? A. By giving public lectures. B. By visualizing data points. C. By consulting geology experts. D By publishing scientific papers. 7. How was Tharp’s work treated by her contemporaries? A. It was credited to others. B. It was viewed as accidental. C. It was briefly acknowledged. D. It was ignored as lacking evidence. D 5. A 6. B 7. 根据第二段中“In the 1940s, few women were accepted in science. Tharp, however, was determined to make her mark. (在20世纪40年代,很少有女性被科学界接受。然而, Tharp决心要留下自己的印记)”可知,想要确立自身地位的愿望促使Tharp投身于科学事业。故选D。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“In the process of her mapping, Tharp discovered the central valley of the Mid-AtlanticRidge, a place where the ocean floor was pulling apart. This was exactly the kind of evidence that could support the controversial (争议的) theory of continental drift, which was largely dismissed by the scientific community at the time.(在绘制地图的过程中,萨普发现了大西洋中脊的中央山谷,在那里海底正在分裂。这正是能支持有争议的大陆漂移理论的证据,该理论在当时基本上被科学界所忽视)”可知,Tharp关于中央山谷的发现之所以重要是因为它为一个争议的理论提供了证据。故选A。 根据第四段中“Tharp and Heezen turned to art to create visual representations of the ocean floor. This produced stunning maps that brought Tharp’s findings to life in a way that no scientific paper could. The beauty of these maps captured the imaginations of scientists and the public alike. Tharp’s maps, and the evidence they provided, became a cornerstone of the modern understanding of geology.(Tharp和Heezen转向艺术来创造海底的视觉表现。这产生了令人惊叹的地图,以一种任何科学论文都无法做到的方式,使萨普的发现栩栩如生。这些地图的美丽俘获了科学家和公众的想象力。萨普的地图和它们提供的证据,成为现代地质学理解的基石)”可知,Tharp and Heezen通过让数据可视化,使得Tharp的发现被广泛接受。故选B。 【7题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“For many years, Tharp’s contributions were overshadowed by her male colleagues — it was Bruce Heezen’s name that often appeared on scientific papers. Tharp worked behind the scenes, receiving little recognition for her groundbreaking work.(多年来,萨普的贡献被她的男性同事所掩盖——Bruce Heezen的名字经常出现在科学论文上。萨普在幕后工作,她的开创性工作几乎没有得到认可)”推知,同时代的人将Tharp的成就归功于他人。故选A。 C Yellowstone’s wolves are helping a new generation of young aspen (山杨) trees to grow tall and join the forest — the first new generation of such trees in Yellowstone’s northern range in 80 years. Gray wolves had disappeared from Yellowstone National Park by 1930 following extensive habitat loss, human hunting and government wolf-killing programs. Without these wolves, populations of deer grew quickly. At their peak population, an estimated 18,000 deer ranged across the park, living on grasses as well as the leaves of trees like aspen. This prevented young trees from establishing themselves, and surveys in the 1990s found no young aspen trees. But when wolves were reintroduced in 1995, the picture began to change. As wolf numbers rose, the deer population in the park dropped sharply, and it is now down to about 2,000. In the new study, published in the journal Forest Ecology and Management, Luke Painter and his colleagues from Oregon State University surveyed aspen stands. “We’re seeing significant new growth of young aspen and this is the first time that we’ve found it in our plots since the 1940s,” Painter said. However, while Yellowstone’s aspen are recovering, they aren’t out of the woods just yet. The deer population has declined, but bison (野牛) numbers have increased in recent years. Bison are a lot harder for wolves to take down, said Painter, so increasing numbers of bison may be emerging as a new restriction on aspen in some areas. The re-emergence of aspen has widespread effects, Painter said. “Aspen are a key species for biodiversity. The aspen trees let more sunlight through their leaves, which creates a habitat that supports a lot of diversity of plants.” “The paper shows the important ecological benefits occurring from the restoration of wolves to Yellowstone National Park,” Dominick Spracklen, a professor at the University of Leeds, said. “Ecosystems that lack large carnivores (食肉动物) are often increasingly out of balance. While reintroducing carnivores raises important challenges around human-wildlife coexistence, this work brings the significant ecological benefits in the long run.” 8. What can be inferred about Yellowstone Park before 1930 according to the text? A. Deer population reached its peak. B. Human activities slightly affected wolves. C. Bison were the main species in the park. D. Gray wolves existed with deer there. 9. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 4 mean? A. The aspen trees are too young to make a forest. B. The aspen trees cannot get rid of survival threat. C. Other tree species may hold back aspen’s recovery. D. Yellowstone is not the best habitat for aspen trees. 10. What is Professor Spracklen’s attitude toward carnivore restoration in ecosystems? A. Favorable. B. Skeptical. C. Disapproving. D. Worried. 11. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text? A. The History of Gray wolves in Yellowstone B. The Return of Gray wolves Revives Aspen Trees C. The Challenges of Human-Wildlife Coexistence Grow D. The Restoration of Large Carnivores in National Parks 【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. 根据第二段“Gray wolves had disappeared from Yellowstone National Park by 1930 following extensive habitat loss, human hunting and government wolf-killing programs. Without these wolves, populations of deer grew quickly. (由于栖息地大量丧失、人类捕猎和政府的灭狼计划,灰狼在1930年从黄石国家公园消失。没有了这些狼,鹿的数量迅速增长。)”可知,1930年前灰狼尚未消失,那时灰狼和鹿是共存的。故选D项。 【9题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第四段“However, while Yellowstone’s aspen are recovering, they aren’t out of the woods just yet. The deer population has declined, but bison (野牛) numbers have increased in recent years. Bison are a lot harder for wolves to take down, said Painter, so increasing numbers of bison may be emerging as a new restriction on aspen in some areas.(然而,尽管黄石公园的山杨正在恢复,但they aren’t out of the woods just yet。鹿的数量有所减少,不过近年来野牛的数量却在增加。潘特(Painter)表示,野牛对狼群来说要难对付得多,因此在部分区域,不断增多的野牛可能正逐渐成为山杨生长的新制约因素。)”可知,“they aren’t out of the woods”指山杨仍面临野牛带来的新威胁,即“无法摆脱生存威胁”。 根据最后一段““The paper shows the important ecological benefits occurring from the restoration of wolves to Yellowstone National Park,” Dominick Spracklen, a professor at the University of Leeds, said. “Ecosystems that lack large carnivores (食肉动物) are often increasingly out of balance. While reintroducing carnivores raises important challenges around human-wildlife coexistence, this work brings the significant ecological benefits in the long run.” (利兹大学教授多米尼克・斯普拉克伦(Dominick Spracklen)表示:“该研究论文表明,黄石国家公园重新引入狼群后,产生了重要的生态效益。缺乏大型食肉动物的生态系统,往往会越来越失衡。尽管重新引入食肉动物会给人兽共存带来重大挑战,但从长远来看,这项举措能带来显著的生态效益。”)”可知,斯普拉克伦教授认可食肉动物恢复带来的生态效益,态度是“支持的”。故选A项。 通读全文特别是第一段“Yellowstone’s wolves are helping a new generation of young aspen (山杨) trees to grow tall and join the forest——the first new generation of such trees in Yellowstone’s northern range in 80 years.(黄石公园的狼群正助力新一代山杨幼苗长得高大,并融入森林 —— 这是80年来黄石公园北部区域首批这样的新一代山杨树。)” D Fighting fires usually uses water or foam, but these can make a mess and harm the surroundings. To address this, engineers at Ohio State University have now made handheld tools that put out fires cleanly with “ionic (离子的) wind” and vortex (涡流) rings. If you’ve ever blown out a birthday candle, you’ll know that a quick burst of air can be enough to put out a flame. It works by separating the heat from the fuel so it can’t start again. But blowing on a campfire doesn’t help — it’s too big, and you just add oxygen. The new device is like a bigger version of the birthday candle trick. First, it shoots a vortex ring of air that creates wild airflow to split heat and fuel. At the same time, the vortex carries tiny conductive particles (导电颗粒) that ionize the air and make even more vortex. In practice, firefighters would aim this handheld tool at a fire and shoot these “ionic wind” rings to put it out. That would also reduce the expense and cleanup. “Using ionic wind and vortex ring technology, we found a more efficient way to solve an environmental problem that will improve lives,” lead researcher John Larocco said. One of the biggest advantages of this device is that it allows firefighters to put out flames from a safer distance, reducing the risk of injury. Since vortex rings can carry chemicals over long distances, firefighters wouldn’t need to get dangerously close to fires. Much more work still needs to be done, however. For one thing, the devices were tested on groups of candles, which aren’t like real house or forest fires. Testing them against more realistic fires is a priority for future experiments. Still, the team thinks this technology could really work in the real world. The researchers also believe this device could be improved with smart sensors and image analysis, making it more precise in detecting different types of fires. Beyond firefighting, this technology could have future applications in aerospace and industrial safety. 12. Why did engineers at Ohio State University invent the new handheld tools? A. To take full advantage of water and foam. B. To enhance firefighters’ professional skills. C. To abandon traditional firefighting methods. D. To reduce the rescue damage to the environment. 13. What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning the birthday candle in paragraph 2? A. The principle of putting out a flame by air. B. The efficient way to blow out a birthday candle. C. The difference between a small flame and a campfire. D. The reason why blowing on a campfire doesn’t work. 14. Why can the new device lower the risk of injuries? A. It creates stronger wind than other tools. B. It absorbs harmful substances in the smoke. C. It enables users to stay farther from the fire. D. It allows firemen to avoid using chemicals. 15. What is the researchers’ expectation for the new device? A. It will prevent all types of fire. B. It will reform the aerospace industry. C. It will be more intelligent and accurate. D. It will be widely used by ordinary people. D 13. A 14. C 15. 根据“Fighting fires usually uses water or foam, but these can make a mess and harm the surroundings. To address this, engineers at Ohio State University have now made handheld tools that put out fires cleanly with “ionic (离子的) wind” and vortex (涡流) rings. (灭火通常会使用水或泡沫,但这些方法可能会造成混乱并对周围环境造成损害。为了解决这个问题,俄亥俄州立大学的工程师们现在研制出了手持式工具,它们利用“离子风”和涡旋环来干净地扑灭火灾。)”可知,文章第一段提到传统灭火方式会造成混乱并破坏周围环境,为解决这一问题,工程师们制造出一种新型手持工具。故选D。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“If you’ve ever blown out a birthday candle, you’ll know that a quick burst of air can be enough to put out a flame. It works by separating the heat from the fuel so it can’t start again. But blowing on a campfire doesn’t help — it’s too big, and you just add oxygen. (如果你曾经吹灭过生日蜡烛,你就会知道,一股快速吹出的气流就足以扑灭火焰。其原理是将热量与燃料分离开来,这样火焰就无法再次燃烧了。但对着篝火吹气却没什么效果——篝火太大了,你这样做只会增加氧气的供应。)”可知,作者提及生日蜡烛意在说明通过空气扑灭火焰的原理。故选A。 根据第四段“One of the biggest advantages of this device is that it allows firefighters to put out flames from a safer distance, reducing the risk of injury. Since vortex rings can carry chemicals over long distances, firefighters wouldn’t need to get dangerously close to fires. (该设备的最大优势之一在于,它能让消防员在更安全的距离扑灭火焰,从而降低受伤的风险。由于涡旋环能够将化学物质远距离输送,消防员就不必冒险靠近火灾现场了。)”可知,这种装置最大的优点之一是它可以让消防员从更安全的距离扑灭火焰,减少受伤的风险。由于涡流环可以将化学物质携带到很远的地方,消防员不需要危险地靠近火场。故选C。 【15题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“Still, the team thinks this technology could really work in the real world. The researchers also believe this device could be improved with smart sensors and image analysis, making it more precise in detecting different types of fires. Beyond firefighting, this technology could have future applications in aerospace and industrial safety. As his best friend since kindergarten, it somehow became my job to keep him on track. People even joked that I was his personal assistant — always the one carrying backup pens and reminding him of due dates. But in most cases, I was shy, and my heart beat fast and my palms sweated when I spoke in public. Jake’s creativity, however, was amazing. One time, he came up with the idea of building a mini solar-powered car. His eyes sparkled with excitement as he sketched out the design on a piece of paper, his pencil moving so fast that I could barely keep up. I watched in amazement as he carefully assembled the parts, his fingers skillfully connecting wires and attaching tiny motors. When the car finally moved under the sunlight, his face lit up with pride. His success was a mix of pure joy and a bit of disbelief — he had never imagined his unique ideas could be so well-received. His idea won him special innovation awards and honors at school, and he was featured in the local newspaper. Despite his forgetfulness in daily life, his mind was always buzzing with brilliant ideas that had the potential to change things. When our school announced the science fair, I knew right away we had to join. Jake had the creative ideas, and I could make sure everything actually got done. We decided to build a smart alarm clock — Jake would design the app, and I would take care of the building. Weeks passed, and Jake kept coming up with cool new features to add. Meanwhile, I spent every afternoon in the garage, putting pieces together, and double-checking our model. The night before the fair, just as I was testing the final version, Jake texted: “Forgot to tell you: I’ve got invited to an art camp tomorrow. You can present without me, right? ” 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题纸相应位置作答。 My hands froze. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Taking the gold medal from the principal, I instantly realized Jake’s original intention. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 My hands froze. I stared at the screen, not sure whether to be angry or disappointed — maybe both. After everything we’d done together, how could he just leave? The next morning, I carried our project to school alone, stomach tight with nerves. I stood by our model, trying to sound confident while explaining the design to the judges. To my surprise, we won. In the end, the principal walked towards me with a first prize medal in hand and a smile on his face. (82words) Taking the gold medal from the principal, I instantly realized Jake’s original intention. He hadn’t merely forgotten the science fair. He deliberately stepped back, allowing me to take center stage and shine brightly so that I could overcome my self-doubt speaking in public. Then I felt a mix of gratitude and admiration for him. Not only was our friendship about me keeping him on track, but also about us supporting each other in different ways. Jake’s brilliance and my reliability were a perfect team, and I realized that true friendship is about selflessness and mutual understanding. B In the mid-20th century, maps of the world showed continents surrounded by vast, featureless oceans. A A request from Heezen. B. A need to store sonar data. C. A belief in continental drift. D. A desire to establish herself. 5. Why was Tharp’s discovery of the central valley significant? A. It backed a then-dismissed theory. B. It showed sonar data was unreliable. C Yellowstone’s wolves are helping a new generation of young aspen (山杨) trees to grow tall and join the forest — the first new generation of such trees in Yellowstone’s northern range in 80 years. The Restoration of Large Carnivores in National Parks D Fighting fires usually uses water or foam, but these can make a mess and harm the surroundings. B The efficient way to blow out a birthday candle. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Hiking, a form of exercise older than exercise itself, is so hot right now. ___16___ Hiking allows them to connect with nature. Jake was brilliant but sometimes seemed absent-minded. ” 注意: 1.续写词数应为150左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。 My hands froze. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Taking the gold medal from the principal, I instantly realized Jake’s original intention. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
