B I’m a seventeen-year-old boy preparing for my A Level exams at the end of the year. In the society where my peers (同龄人) and I live, we tend to accept the rat race values. As students, we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs. I enjoy studying and have consistently received A’s in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment. Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad. Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home. Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠叨) him to let her go to work. Their constant arguing bothered me, so I advised Dad that Mum would be better off with a part-time job. He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then. My most proud achievement, however, is my successful work in the local old folks’ home. My grandparents had raised me since I was a child. I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died. Unlike many of my classmates, I do not take part in my school's community service to earn points. I enjoy my voluntary work and believe I’m contributing to a worthwhile cause. This is where I can help. I talk to the elderly, assist them with their daily life, and listen to their problems, glory days and the hardships they experienced. Last year I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed a great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments, I’m especially proud of my service at the old folks’ home, so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future. I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less fortunate as well as find great satisfaction in it, after all. 24. What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph? A. His amazing grades got him a good job. B. He refuses to compete with his peers fiercely. C. His views on social values are well known. D. He is content with his scholastic achievements. 25. Which role does the author play in his parents’ relationship? A. A helper. B. A judge. C. A monitor. D. A supporter. 26. What is the greatest achievement for the author? A. The contribution to volunteering. B. The success in exams. C. The recovery of confidence in life. D. The work in community service. 27. Why does the author want to major in social work at university? A. To gain a well-paid job. B. To give his life a purpose. C. To meet his grandparents’ expectations. D. To better help the people in need. C John Charlie Veron—widely known as the “Father of Coral Reef (珊瑚礁) ” — is a celebrated expert who has personally discovered nearly a quarter of the world’s coral species and has spent the past 45 years studying Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. But now the 73-year-old is raising the alarm about its future. The Great Barrier Reef, one of the natural wonders, is 2,300 kilometers long and is the only living organism that can be seen from space. It is considered a world treasure site due to its biodiversity (生物多样性) with 30 species of whales, dolphins and sharks. Within the reef itself, there are also a number of tiny organisms and fishes. However, its health is threatened. After the recent mass bleaching (白化) events, Veron dived in many areas of the Great Barrier Reef to see the damage by himself. “I was seeing and feeling it and it was absolutely shocking,” he says. Veron says the mass bleaching events in the past few years and the possibility of losing one of nature’s greatest treasures are a wake-up call for the world in the wider battle against climate change, which, together with the rising sea temperature, is considered the greatest threat to the reef. Fortunately, earlier this year, the Australian government announced nearly 400million dollars in new funding towards scientific projects designed to help the reef. There has been criticism in Australia about the slow process of the funding. “It won’t be wasted, though,” Veron says. “Scientists will be able to create a sort of seed bank to protect the species until the climate is good enough to rebuild the reef. What the scientists hope to do is help nature along a bit after the big carbon dioxide increase is over and it starts to come down.” 28.Why is the Great Barrier Reef considered a world treasure site? A.It is a natural wonder. B. It can be seen from space. C.It has a rich variety of species. D. It is 2,300 kilometers long. 29.Which does Veron think is one of the biggest threats to the reef? A. Human activities. B. Climate change. C. Bleaching events. D. Tiny organisms and fishes. 30.What’s Veron’s attitude to the future of the reef according to the last paragraph? A. Optimistic. B. Critical. C. Uncertain. D. Cautious. 31. What does the text mainly tell us? A. The health of the reef in the world is worrying. B. Climate change is threatening biodiversity. C. The reasons for the reef bleaching are clear. D. The Great Barrier Reef is in danger of extinction. D Any foreigner who has tried to learn Chinese can tell how hard it is to master the tones(语调,声调) required to speak and understand. And anyone who has tried to learn to play the violin or other instruments can report similar challenges. Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning Chinese. Writing in the online edition of Nature Neuroscience, researchers from Northwestern University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch(音高). One of the study's authors, Nina Kraus, said the findings suggested that studying music ''actually tunes(调节) our sensory system''. This means that schools which want children to do well in languages should hesitate before cutting music programs, Dr. Kraus said. She said music training might also help children with language problems. Mandarin(普通话)speakers have been shown to have a more complex encoding(编码) of pitch patterns in their brains than English speakers do. This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch plays a central role. A single-syllable word can have several meanings depending on how it is inflected. For this study, the researchers looked at 20 non-Chinese speaking volunteers, half with no musical background and half who have studied an instrument for at least six years. As they were shown a movie, the volunteers also heard an audio tape of the Mandarin word ''mi'' in three of its meanings: squint, confusion and rice. The researchers recorded activities in their brain stems to see how well they were processing the sounds. Those with a music background showed much more brain activities in response to the Chinese sounds. The lead author of the study, Patrick C. M. Wong, said it might work both ways. It appears that native speakers of tonal languages may do better at learning instruments. 32. When learning Chinese, a foreigner will find _____. A. it difficult to learn music at the same time B. it not difficult to learn music at the same time C. it hard to master the tones for speech and understanding D. it easy to use the brain to help him discover changes in pitch 33. Why does Chinese learning have something to do with music training? A. Because there is the same difficulty in learning Chinese and music. B. Because skills to learn the two make use of the same parts of the brain. C. Because music training might help people with language study. D. Because people who do well in Chinese study do well in music. 34. The underlined word ''inflected'' in the fourth paragraph can be replaced by the word ''_____''. A. created B. Spelled C. seemed D. pronounced 35. What would be the best title of this passage? A. Mandarin Speakers Are Smarter than English Speakers B. Skilled Ear for Music May Help Language Study C. Pitch Plays a Central Role in Chinese Learning D. Schools Need to Develop Music Programs 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 During puberty (青春期), your body goes through many changes, and you start forming a body image — how you see, think, and feel about your body’s size, shape, and weight, or specific features like your nose.36. For instance, you may believe your nose is too big or too small, even though it looks perfectly normal. 37. One major influence is peer pressure. Your friends might make casual jokes about your appearance, or you might compare yourself to them and feel they look better. Such experiences can harm the way you view yourself. Another powerful influence is the media, which often promotes a narrow, ideal body type. For example, if fair skin is portrayed as beautiful, you may feel insecure if you don’t match that ideal. Developing a negative body image can lead to unhealthy behaviors, such as extreme dieting, overexercising, or even risky plastic surgeries. 38. . When you focus too much on appearance, you may forget to appreciate other great things about yourself, such as your talents and personality. To build a positive body image, it’s essential to remember that no perfect body exists, as beauty standards are always changing. Models and celebrities may appear flawless in the media, but much of their appearance is due to makeup, angles, lighting, and editing. 39. . Rather than focusing on appearances, value people for their true selves. By surrounding yourself with positive influences and avoiding comments on looks, you can redirect your attention from self-criticism.40. . Over time, you’ll build inner confidence and develop a healthier, more accepting relationship with your body. A.Many factors shape your body image. B.It also lowers your overall life satisfaction. C.However, your true beauty lies within your heart. D.External judgement can be a double-edged sword. E.Without these tricks, they are just as “imperfect” as everyone else. F.This shift enables you to recognize and celebrate your talents and strengths. G.Surprisingly, body image is shaped more by your thoughts than by reality. 第三部分 语言运用(共四节,满分30分) 第一节 (共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。 My mother left the field of education formally after I was born. I forgot we have exams next Wednesday-I need to prepare for them this weekend. W: Right! So, where’s the party going to be? At your house? M: No. My parents will be at home the night I want the party. Jack said we could go to his house. W: But it’s quite far from here and it’s not as large as yours. M: Actually, we’ll have the party in the garden. This way the guests will have more space. W: That sounds great! M: Jack said that because he lives in a quiet area, the party must finish at midnight. He will have problems with his neighbours if it doesn’t. W: That’s a pity. It was great last time when your party finished at three in the morning. M: That’s why I prefer parties in the winter. The doors and windows are closed. Now it’s summer; everyone will hear the noise from the music and dancing. 听第10段材料,回答第18至20题。 17.What was Alana’s problem with her first marathon race? C.2 hours and 42 minutes. 【答案】18.B 19.B 20.C 【原文】Alana is just 16, but she takes part in full marathons. In her first race, Alana finished tenth. She says she went too quickly for the first five kilometres. It was also a hot day so she needed to drink more water than usual. Alana’s father is also her running couch. For him, the main thing was that her first marathon was a fun experience for her, He said they would continue to run together. Alana is taking part in the Ohio Marathon next weekend. She wants to finish it in less than 2 hours and 40 minutes. The fastest she’s done yet is 2 hours and 42 minutes. That is still 8 minutes slower than the 2 hours and 34 minutes that the famous marathon runner Cathy managed when she was 16. Many marathons have a lower age limit of 18. But as Alana shows, younger teenagers can be great runners too. 高一英语 第 1 页 共 10 页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
