Part 1: Read and Explore
Hurricanes (飓风) are very powerful storms that can cause terrible harm. Some hurricanes produce winds
stronger than 155 mph that are able to harm homes and buildings. Knowing how and where hurricanes form can help keep you safe if a hurricane does come.
The hurricane forms over warm water after the ocean has been heated up during the hot summer months. Because it needs warm water, it happens most often during late summer and early fall. In the Atlantic Ocean, the hurricane season is from June to November.
Also, since hurricanes need warm ocean water to form, the people that are influenced by hurricanes live in areas near the coast. People who don't live near the coast needn't worry too much about staying safe during a hurricane. However, even though hurricanes happen near coastlines, strong winds can still go farther inland with lots of rain.
Hurricanes can be very dangerous. When a hurricane moves toward land,it can cause harm in a number of ways. If you live somewhere where hurricanes might happen,it is important for you to know what to do to protect yourself. First, have a plan to leave the area, and listen to local weather stations for any weather notices. If you don't have time to leave, then find a safe place to stay. Make sure your shelter (避难所) is on higher ground, that the windows are closed, and that you stay inside until the hurricane passes.
Part 2: Skills Challenge
Task 1: Critical Thinking(批判性思维)
1. Why do people living far from the coast needn't worry too much about hurricanes? (Use "because" to answer)
(提示:从文中“since hurricanes need warm ocean water to form, the people that are influenced by hurricanes live in areas near the coast”分析原因)
2. List TWO suggestions for people living in hurricane-prone areas to protect themselves.
Suggestion 1: ____________________________________________________________
Suggestion 2: ____________________________________________________________
3. Design an English slogan to remind people to stay safe during a hurricane.
Task 2: Creative Project(创新应用)
As a community volunteer, design a plan to help residents in coastal areas prepare for hurricanes.
Requirement 1: Include 1 action from the text(如Listen to local weather stations for notices, find a safe shelter on higher ground等).
Requirement 2: Add 2 creative ideas(如Organize a hurricane-preparation workshop, make and distribute emergency supply checklists等).
Requirement 3: Explain your plan in English(至少2句话,说明措施如何帮助居民应对飓风).
Task 3: Vocabulary & Inference(词汇与推理)
1. What does "shelter" mean in the sentence "If you don't have time to leave, then find a safe place to stay. Make sure your shelter is on higher ground"?
A. Food storage B. Safe place C. Communication tool D. Transportation
2. Why does the writer say "even though hurricanes happen near coastlines, strong winds can still go farther inland"?

An emergency is a sudden situation that can harm someone's health, safety,or property.Knowing how to handle it can make a big difference.(紧急情况是指可能损害某人健康、安全或财产的突发情况。
First,don't panic. If you feel scared or confused, stop and take deep breaths. This helps you think clearly instead of acting out of fear.Staying calm also helps others around you feel less afraid...(首先,不要惊慌。 故选A。
Next,decide what kind of emergency it is...Knowing this helps you choose the right action.(接下来,决定这是什么紧急情况……
Then,call for help.In the USA,dial 911.In other places, use the local emergency number.Tell the person on the phone where you are and what's wrong.(然后,呼叫帮助。

Task 1: Critical Thinking(批判性思维)
1. People living far from the coast needn't worry too much about hurricanes because hurricanes need warm ocean water to form and mainly influence areas near the coast.
2.
- Suggestion 1: Have a plan to leave the area when a hurricane is coming and listen to local weather stations for weather notices.
- Suggestion 2: If there is no time to leave, find a safe shelter on higher ground, close the windows and stay inside until the hurricane passes.
3. Example 1: "Stay inside, keep safe; wait for the hurricane to leave!"
Example 2: "Listen to the forecast, find a high shelter; beat the hurricane, stay unharmed!"
Task 2: Creative Project(创新应用)
First, I will ask residents to listen to local weather stations every day during hurricane season to get timely weather notices, which helps them know when a hurricane is coming in advance. Second, I will organize a hurricane-preparation workshop to teach residents how to pack emergency supplies like water and food, and how to check if their shelter is safe. Third, I will make and distribute emergency supply checklists so residents won't miss necessary items when preparing for hurricanes. This plan helps residents stay informed, learn practical skills and get well-prepared to deal with hurricanes.
Task 3: Vocabulary & Inference(词汇与推理)
1. B
2. The writer says this because hurricanes can cause terrible harm. Even if people live inland, they may still be affected by the strong winds from hurricanes, so they should not take it lightly.
