Little George lived in a poor village. One summer day, George’s mother sent him to the field to pick up some dried wood for the fire. George looked very hard. By the time the sun was high, he was very hot and wished for a cool place to rest and have some food. As he walked along, he found some shade, and by it were some fine, wild strawberries.
“How good these will be with my bread and butter,” thought George. He picked up all of the strawberries. As he was lifting the first strawberry to his mouth, he remembered his sick mother, alone in her dark, cold room in the village.
With this in mind, he put the strawberry back again. “Shall I save them for her?” he asked himself.
He thought how refreshing they would be for her, yet he was still looking at them with a longing eye.
“I will eat half, and take the other half to her,” he said.
He divided them into two heaps (堆), but each heap looked so small. He put them together again.
“I will only eat one,” he thought.
But, as he again lifted it to his mouth, he saw that he had taken the finest, and he put it back. When the sun was beginning to sink, George set out for home. How happy he felt, then, that he had all his strawberries for his sick mother.
He heard his mother’s faint voice calling him. “Is that you, George? I am glad you have come back. I am thirsty, and am longing for some tea.”
George ran to her and joyfully offered his wild strawberries. “And you saved them for your sick mother, didn’t you?” said she, laying her hand fondly on his head, with tears in her eyes.
Could eating the strawberries have given George half the happiness he felt at this moment?

You might have heard that some cities are running out of (用尽) water. How can a city run out of water? To answer this question, we need to take a look at where our water comes from.
Water covers 70 percent of Earth’s surface (表面). But most of that is seawater. Fresh water is what we use to drink, take showers and cook food. Less than 1 percent of the world’s water is fresh and accessible (可使用).
Usually, fresh water comes from rivers and lakes. But the amount of accessible water changes over time. People build reservoirs (水库) to help save water so that they always have enough water to use. During rainy times, the reservoir saves water from rivers. When it is dry, the reservoir gives water back into the rivers.
Underground (地下的) water is another source of fresh water. For example, water from wells (井) is a kind of underground water.
The ocean can also give us water. But we need to get its salt out before we can use it. This can be expensive. So it is not very common in poor countries.
Take Cape Town, the second-biggest city in South Africa, as an example. It almost ran out of water in 2018. Its water problem was because of the growing number of people and a record drought (创纪录的干旱), National Geographic reported. Now, people in this city are trying to save water. Each person is using less than 100 liters of water a day, according to Xinhua. The government in Cape Town is trying to find a way to use ocean water to help solve the problem.

a. People wasted too much water. b.There are too many people.
c. It suffered a drought that year. d. People dug too many wells.
A. ab B. ac C. bc D. bd
60. How might Cape Town solve its water shortage?

You should be aware that stress is a danger to your health. If you want to live a long life, you need to begin to fight against stress from a young age.
But as he again lifted it to his mouth, he saw that he had taken the finest, and he put it back.

Less than 1 percent of the world’s water is fresh and accessible (可使用的).

A. underground water B. seawater C. lake water D. water from wells
58. People build reservoirs to ________.

C. save water for dry seasons D. turn seawater into fresh water
59. Why did Cape Town run out of water in 2018?
a. People wasted too much water. b.There are too many people.
c. It suffered a drought that year. d. People dug too many wells.
A. ab B. ac C. bc D. bd
60. How might Cape Town solve its water shortage?

C. By digging more wells. D. By sending its people to other cities.
