My city, neighborhood and block are filled with people who don't know me, don't care to know me, and don't talk to me. I find that it's pretty hard to love people you don't even know. And sometimes, we all, myself included, use that as an excuse not to try. I read Brendan's story recently and was moved. One day, Brendan, a young man in New York, was on the way back to his Brooklyn apartment when a homeless woman called Jackie asked him for money. He said that he had no money. By the end of the week, she asked two more times, and each time he answered “No”. The woman looked sad, so Brendan said, “I am on my way to a job interview. If I get the job, I'll take you out for lunch.” Brendan got the job. He took Jackie out for lunch. That was when their friendship began. They built a strong friendship by supporting each other and spending their birthdays, holidays and difficult times together over a period of eight years. When Brendan's heater broke, Jackie made a blanket for him. Two days later when he told her that he had lost his job, she left and returned minutes later, bringing him food to eat. She continued to do that during the whole winter. Even with so little, she often gave back. Over these years, Jackie moved from the streets and subway stations into a halfway house, and is now moving into an apartment. To celebrate it,__Brendan wanted to do something special for Jackie. He went with her and helped her to pick out everything she would need for her new apartment. May Brendan's story encourages us to find a new way to honour, serve and love the people around us. 1.What can we learn about the author from Paragraph 1? D.He gave her some spare change. 根据第二段中的“One day, Brendan, a young man ... and each time he answered ‘No’.” B。 3.What happened after Brendan and Jackie had lunch together? At 65, George had recently retired and was seeking a rewarding hobby for his golden years. For both of us, painting was “it” and we met at a local painting class. Thus we began a friendship that was to last for 25 years—until the day he died. George took to painting with an aweinspiring (令人惊叹的) level of passion and commitment, even changing the spare bedroom of his home into a studio. How I envied him, as in my own home I had neither the space nor the funds for such a luxury. His painting equipment was comprehensive. George housed many of these items in a tool box—a red metal tool box. For about six years George and I studied together through various units until the completion of the course. Fastforward some years and George was now about 80 years old. One day, he rang and told me that he was giving up painting and giving away all his “stuff”. “I can't paint, Bev. I don't know why I ever thought I could,” he declared. Actually, he was mistaken about his painting ability because he had turned out some unique and wonderful works. However, George had decided he was through with painting, and no amount of talking could persuade him otherwise. And so that was why George left all his painting equipment to me. “You have the best talent and are most likely to use it,” he said. After considerable persuasion, I accepted this precious gift on condition that he could get it back at any time. He never did, of course. I still use much of his equipment today. As I paint, I often remember George, his big personality, generous spirit and unfailing encouragement. The most treasured item is the red tool box, still in good shape. The original shop sticker is still firmly in place although the price has long since worn off. But that's all right because to my mind some things, like friendship, are beyond price. George。 5.What does the underlined word “it” refer to? A.George once created some fine paintings. B.George didn't like his painting equipment. C.George always wanted to give up painting. D.George misunderstood the author's painting ability. A。 7.Why did George call the author? A.To admit his own failure. B.To present his painting tools. C.To ask the author a favor. D.To make an explanation. 根据第三段中的“And so that was why George left all his painting equipment to me.” B。 8.What is the best title of this passage? A.A Lesson from My Old Friend B.Inspiration for Art from My Partner C.Nice George: An Artist with Great Passion D.A Red Tool Box: A Bond Between Two Friends 答案:D 解析:标题判断题。通读全文,尤其根据最后一段中的“The most treasured item ... are beyond price.” Travelling with friends can be an absolutely amazing experience where you could make lifelong memories or it could end up ruining your friendship. __1__ Here are some rules you should follow to make sure your next trip with friends goes as smoothly as possible. __2__ Sure, you and your friends probably have some similar interests, but that's not always the case. In an effort to keep everyone happy, go over travel plans and expectations ahead of time. Have each person categorize activities or sights into “must see” “want to see” and “would go if we have time”. Plan accordingly and make sure everyone can see some of their top attractions. Communicate and respect each other. Everyone has personal preference when travelling. But sometimes things don't go as you like. In this case, share your requirements directly with your travelling companions. __3__ Have a conversation when problems arise, for communication is the key. Don't disappear. When travelling with a group—or even just one other person—you may want to be alone sometimes. That's completely fine, but make sure your friends know where you are and have a way of contacting you. __4__ Get off your phone. Of course, your friends will understand if you need to take a call from a family member, or in the event of a work emergency, but other than that, try to stay off your phone. __5__ After all, the appeal of this type of trip is to spend time with friends. Just enjoy it! A.Include at least one activity for everyone. B.Give each other some space. C.At the same time, listen to their concerns and be respectful of them. D.And remember that consideration and respect go a long way. E.It's especially true of travelling in foreign countries or unfamiliar places. F.So it's important to make sure you and your friends are on the same page. G.Don't respond to nonurgent work contact or send messages frequently. 1.答案:F 解析:根据上文“Travelling with friends can be ... your friendship.” 根据下文“Plan accordingly and make sure everyone can see some of their top attractions.” 故选A。 3.答案:C 解析:根据本段主旨句“Communicate and respect each other.(沟通并互相尊重。)”和上文“In this case ... your travelling companions.” 4.答案:E 解析:根据上文“That's completely fine ... of contacting you.” 5.答案:G 解析:根据上文“Of course, your friends ... stay off your phone.”
