A reader wrote in to say that she was feeling left out at break because her best friend wasn't around. Here's our advice to her, and to all kids who feel lonely sometimes.
It's hard when a best friend isn't around, maybe because she moved to a different school or a different class. You may feel lonely at break or lunchtime. You want to have new friends. But how do you make them? Maybe it seems like everybody else already has their friends. But remember, there's always room for more friends.
Start by looking around your classroom—think about which kids you'd like to play with at break. Look for chances to say hi to them, smile and be friendly. Offer to share something with or express your appreciation to them, invite someone to play with you or say “Do you want to sit here?” at lunchtime. If you have trouble doing this or if you're feeling shy, ask your teacher to help you make new
friends. Teachers are usually pretty good at matching up friends. The best way to make friends is to be a friend. Be kind, be friendly, share, say nice things, offer to help, and pretty soon you'll have one, or two, or even more new friends.
18.Why did the reader feel lonely?
A.She had trouble with her studies.
B.Her best friend wasn't around.
C.She was unable to look after herself.
答案:B
19.What is the speaker trying to do?
A.Introduce a class.
B.Share experiences.
C.Give suggestions.
答案:C
20.Whom is this passage written for?
A.Teachers. B.Parents.
C.Students.
答案:C

In the cold and plain living room, Matt is sitting in his chair. His eyes don't shine anymore. His skin is wrinkled (有皱纹的) and pale. He looks extremely old and weak. Today is his birthday, and he is by himself. The only thing that he has been doing all day is thinking about how sad and lonely his life is. As he was looking at some old pictures, he found one special with him and his friends from college. This picture brought back the days when he had friends and his life was full of happiness. Also, it brought him a sad memory. This memory happened forty years ago, during his last year of college.
Through college, Matt has a friend named Mark. Mark was tall and thin. He wore a thick glass. He was shy, smart and responsible. Also, Mark didn't have as many friends as Matt did. He considered Matt as his best friend. As good friends, Matt and Mark went bowling together, they knew everything about each other, and they hung out. Also, they overcame many problems together. They were really good friends.
On his twentyfourth birthday their life changed. On the night before Matt's birthday, Mark called Matt, but his voice sounded strange. He said, “I have an important project to work on. I am having some problems with this. Maybe, you could come over and help me with it. Could you?” Matt asked, “What time?” Mark kept in silence for a minute, then he said, “Is 8 pm good for you?” Then Matt answered, “OK! See you later.” At the night, it was Matt's birthday. So, he didn't want to spend his birthday helping Mark with his project. Matt went to a club with some other guys.

America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while—then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.
Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, and share their holidays and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily.
Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday life, they don't show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous__with__our__time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides for our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at home, but truly can not manage a great deal of time to do with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.
For the Americans, it is often considered friendlier to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!

Jeffrey Hall, a teacher of Communications from the University of Kansas (KU), has used his research to define the exact amount of time necessary to make friends with someone. He's also found how long it will take to deepen a relationship. His new study has found that it takes around 50 hours of time together to go from being someone's acquaintance to casual friend. It takes about 90 hours to go from being casual friends to friends, and more than 200 hours before considering someone a close friend or best friend.
But it isn't spending just any kind of time together that deepens a friendship—hours spent working together, for example, don't count as much as hours spent getting to know someone by hanging out, joking around, playing video games, and doing more playful activities. The study explains that these kinds of activities help us to form a deeper connection with someone. “We have to put that time in,” Hall said. “You can't make friends without any effort.”
The results of the study come from analysis of 355 responses to an online survey from adults who said they had moved in the last six months and were looking for new friends in their new environment. Survey participants were asked about new relationships as well as hours spent together and activities they did. They were then asked to rate their resulting relationships according to the depth of their friendship.
The main conclusion that Hall has come to is that making close friends takes serious effort. So if you want to have some best friends, you have to know that spending time with someone is the most important thing.

Tom was in high school for half a year, yet he still hadn't adapted to the new school life. He was unwilling to communicate with others. In class, he often felt lonely among his classmates, always lost in his own thoughts. As a result, he became increasingly unhappy and his academic performance began to get worse.
Mr Smith, the headteacher, noticed his unhappiness. One Friday afternoon, the teacher approached him and said, “Tom, I've noticed that you've been a bit down lately. Is there anything wrong? Are you willing to share your feelings with me?” Hesitating for a moment, Tom sighed and said, “I just can't fit in here. I miss my parents and old friends so much, and it seems that I have little in common with the classmates here.” They chatted for a long time that afternoon.
The next Monday, it was time for the class to change seats as usual and the headteacher asked Jack, an outgoing and helpful boy, to sit next to Tom. Jack said cheerfully, “I'd like to make friends with you.” Tom was amazed by Jack's friendly offer, but soon felt a wave of warmth flowing through his heart. Jack immediately started a lively conversation, sharing his favorite hobbies and interesting experiences. Tom, who had been so lonely before, gradually found himself responding and opening up.

Here's our advice to her and to all kids who feel lonely. Sometimes it's hard when a best friend isn't around, maybe because he moved to a different school over a different class. You may feel lonely at break or lunch time. You want to have new friends, but how do you make them? Maybe IT seems like everybody else already has their friends. But remember, there's always room for more friends. Start by looking around your classroom, think about which kids you'd like to play with a break, look for chances to say hi to them, smile and be friendly, offer to share something with or express your appreciation to them, invite someone to play with. You all say, do you want to sit here at lunch time if you have trouble doing this, or if you're feeling shy, ask your teacher to help you make new friends. Teachers are usually pretty good at matching up friends. The best way to make friends is to be a friend, be kind, be friendly, share, say nice things, offer to help, and pretty soon you'll have one or two or even more new friends.
