David Thomas and I have been friends since we were about 5 years old. We celebrated his 26th birthday last weekend, marking about twenty years of friendship. Now David has got a PhD in English literature, and I’m a science reporter. We found we were both attracted to a study published in Child Development.
In the study, the researchers observed (观察) 169 people for 10 years, starting when they were 15 years old. At the age of 15 and again at 16, the participants (参与者) were asked to bring in their closest friends for one-on-one interviews with the researchers. “They were asked how much trust there was, how good communication was and how disconnected they felt in the friendship,” says Rachel Narr, the lead author of the study. Each year, the participants were surveyed about their feelings of anxiety, depression (忧郁) and self-worth.
Narr says when she watched videos made in the early years of the study, she could easily tell which relationships were strong based on the teens’ behavior. “These teens are likely to be open with one another about difficult topics, and they’re more connected with one another and helping the other person,” she says. When the researchers examined the participants at the end of the study, they found the ones who had close and meaningful connections reported less depression and anxiety and more self-worth at 25 than they had at 15 and 16.
“The finding is valuable, which shows us the importance of teenage friendships, not just in the short term but throughout adulthood,” says Catherine Bagwell, an expert in psychology at Oxford College of Emory University, who was not part of the study.
Obviously, I wouldn’t be the same person without David. During our senior year of high school, my parents were busy with their work. I usually stayed at home alone on weekends, but sometimes David was there with me. He helped me study, clean up the house and do other things. Over the years, we’ve helped each other get through some bigger difficulties, like our addiction to phones. Last weekend, we talked about Narr’s study, and we saw ourselves. The study found a best friend is important, and that makes sense to us.
8.What did the researchers study about the participants at first?
A.Where their stress came from.
B.How close their friendships were.
C.What ways they liked to make friends.
D.How their friendships affected their physical health.
9.What can be implied from the finding of the study?
A.Teenage friendships can influence job choices.
B.Good teenage friendships bring benefits in adulthood.
C.Youth is a perfect period to form lifelong relationships.
D.Long-term relationships develop a sense of responsibility.
10.What is Catherine Bagwell’s attitude towards the study?
A.Confused. B.Uninterested. C.Disappointed. D.Praising.
11.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Researchers measure teenage friendship closeness.
B.A study shows teenage friendships matter into adulthood.
C.Teenage friendships only affect short-term mental health.
D.The author’s friendship with David teaches him the value of competition.

Hearing from an old friend you’ve lost touch with can be a nice surprise. But when it comes to who will send the message first to get reconnected, most people just can’t make up their mind.
According to a new study, everyone expects to rebuild old friendships, but surprisingly we are often afraid to take the first step. The study has also provided helpful suggestions on picking up old friendships.
The researchers conducted a survey of almost 530 people. As the findings showed, over 90 percent of them said that they could think of a long-lost friend and would like to speak with him again. However, when they were asked to send a message, only about one out of ten actually did.
“We all know that trying to change people’s minds might not be the best practice,” says Nora Marshal, lead researcher of the study. “Instead of changing people’s minds, we needed to change their behavior.”
The research team came up with a new strategy, which was tested out by conducting a “warm-up” practice. One group spent three minutes sending messages to their present friends, while the other group spent three minutes watching videos on their phones. Then, everyone was asked to write and send a message to an old friend.
The practice task proved successful: 62 percent of those who had warmed up did send the message — a two-thirds increase over those who hadn’t. By contrast, only 11 percent of those watching videos reached out to an old friend.
So why is getting old friends reconnected difficult and we need to practise some warm-ups first? Over time, old friends can start to feel like strangers. That is why people feel worried about reconnecting. “We advise people not to overthink the situation and just press’ send’,” said Nora. “Just take their friend’s position and think about how much they would appreciate receiving a note from an old friend.”
12.What does the new study show?
A.People are afraid to lose their old friends. B.People seldom hear from their old friends.
C.People are unwilling to pick up their old friendship.D.People usually don’t dare to contact old friends first.
13.How did the researchers get the findings?
A.By carrying out a survey. B.By discussing with 530 people.
C.By teaming up with other groups. D.By comparing people’s minds and behavior.
14.What is the key step of the new strategy?
A.Changing people’s minds. B.Reading some warm-up messages.
C.Watching videos related to friendship. D.Contacting present friends to warm up.
15.What is Nora Marshal’s suggestion for us?
A.Appreciate your friend’s efforts. B.Be brave to reach out to strangers.
C.Feel free to reconnect our old friends. D.Consider carefully before taking action.

Family and friends are two of the most important parts of our lives. They shape who we are and give us the love and support we need to grow. 16
Family is often described as our first school. 17 . Our parents teach us how to walk, talk and behave properly. They also give us the first lessons about love and responsibility. Brothers and sisters can be our first friends, and they share our joys and sorrows from a young age. Even when we grow up and leave home, family remains a strong connection that we can always turn to.
18 . Unlike family ties, friendships are relationships we choose for ourselves. We make friends with people who share our interests, values and personalities. Good friends listen to us when we are upset, celebrate our successes and help us get through difficult times. 19 . They encourage us to be better versions of ourselves and offer a different perspective on life.
However, both family and friendship require care and effort to maintain. 20 . For family, it means spending quality time together and communicating openly. For friends, it means staying in touch, being honest and showing up for each other when it matters. By valuing both family and friends, we can build a happy and fulfilling life.
A.Friendship is another key part of our lives.
B.They are the ones who know us best.
C.It is where we learn our first lessons about life.
D.What makes family and friends so special?
E.In fact, many friendships last a lifetime.

The last bell rang. Tom headed for the school gate to meet his closest friend, Mike. They grew up together and shared all their troubles and dreams. As an only child, Tom regarded Mike as the brother he had never had.
As always, Mike was already there, waiting for him. “I'm going to try out for the basketball team,” he announced, eyes shining with excitement.
“You'll make it for sure,” Tom replied. He stopped for a moment and then said, “I'm thinking of joining the chess club.”
Mike turned quickly to face Tom, his eyes wide with shock. “What? That's such a bad idea! Chess clubs are for losers” he cried out.
“I was only thinking about it. I didn't say I'd definitely join,” Tom said, trying not to sound too disappointed.
Back home at dinner, Tom told his mom about the conversation. “Joining the chess club would be a good chance to make new friends, and I really want to play chess with people my own age,” he said, “But what will Mike think?” Mom just smiled and encouraged him to choose what made him happy. “Only you know what's right for you, not anyone else,” she added gently.
A few days later, Tom worked up the courage to tell Mike he'd joined the chess club anyway. Mike got angry, shouting “You made a big mistake, Tom, now everyone will think you are a loser” Tom was shocked at his friend's words. Still, deep inside his heart, he had made up his mind to join the chess club and go after what he truly loved, so he walked away without saying a word. After all, that was his own choice, and he hoped Mike could respect his decision.
Tom walked to his chess club at Mr. Robert’s classroom. On the way there, he started to feel upset. Maybe this was the end of his relationship with Mike. Doubts flooded him as he was about to open the door to the club. What if Mike was right? What if the chess club was full of losers? Maybe everyone at school would think he was a loser, too.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
To his surprise, Mr. Robert and the six members gave him a warm welcome.

To his surprise, Mr. Robert and the six members gave him a warm welcome. They introduced themselves with big smiles and shared why they loved chess — some since childhood, others for relaxation. Tom’s worries melted away as he played his first game. His opponent Lisa patiently explained strategies, and soon he was absorbed in the board, forgetting his fears. By afternoon’s end, Tom knew he’d made the right choice: this wasn’t a club for “losers” but for those who loved thinking, learning, and connecting through chess.
Soon the news that their team won the national first prize reached the school. Posters went up around campus, and classmates crowded to congratulate Tom. Even Mike, who’d avoided him for weeks, approached hesitantly. “I saw your name in the paper,” Mike said, shifting uncomfortably. “I guess I was wrong about chess clubs… You guys are amazing.” Tom smiled, relieved. “Thanks, Mike. It means a lot.” Their friendship slowly healed as Mike attended the next chess club meeting, curious about the game. Tom realized true friendship isn’t about agreeing on everything — it’s about respecting choices and supporting what makes each other happy.

C.People are unwilling to pick up their old friendship. D.People usually don’t dare to contact old friends first.
【答案】12.D 13.A 14.D 15.C

根据第三段“The researchers conducted a survey of almost 530 people. (研究人员对近530人进行了调查)”可知,研究人员是通过进行调查得到这些发现的。故选A项。
根据第五段“The research team came up with a new strategy, which was tested out by conducting a “warm-up” practice. One group spent three minutes sending messages to their present friends, while the other group spent three minutes watching videos on their phones. (研究小组提出了一种新的策略,并通过进行“热身”练习进行了测试。一组花三分钟给他们现在的朋友发信息,而另一组花三分钟在手机上看视频。然后,每个人都被要求写信给一位老朋友。)”及第六段“The practice task proved successful: 62 percent of those who had warmed up did send the message — a two-thirds increase over those who hadn’t. (练习任务被证明是成功的:62%做了热身的人确实发送了信息——比没有做热身的人多了三分之二)”可知,新策略的关键步骤是联系现在的朋友作为热身练习。故选D项。
15.推理判断题。根据最后一段““We advise people not to overthink the situation and just press’ send’,” said Nora. “Just take their friend’s position and think about how much they would appreciate receiving a note from an old friend.” (诺拉说:“我们建议人们不要想太多,直接按下‘发送’键就可以了。”“只要站在他们朋友的立场上,想想他们收到老朋友的便条会有多感激。)”可知,诺拉·马歇尔给我们的建议是随时可以重新联系我们的老朋友。故选C项。

36.means 37.supportive 38.balancing 39.choice/choices 40.whom/who/that 41.to help 42.the 43.in 44.stronger 45.myself
have trouble (in) doing sth.
故填choice/choices。
故填whom/who/that。
故填to help。
故填the。
bring out the best in sb. 故填in。

The Best Pen Pal Programs for Kids
No matter how old you are, everyone longs to feel a little more connected. Email and texting connect us across the globe in an instant, but nothing quite beats the feeling of opening a hand-written letter. The following are some programs that offer penpals for kids and other letter writing opportunities.
Write to an Author
Is your little bookworm obsessed with their favorite author? Or maybe you have an aspiring author of your own? Why not put pen to paper and write a letter to your writer. Simply look for the publisher’s address on the inside cover of the book and address your letter to the author. While there’s no guarantee of a response, you can increase your chances of receiving a reply by including a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
Kids for Peace
What better reason to write a letter than to spread peace and kindness? Kids for Peace was founded with the intention of bringing kids together. The platform, which features over 300 chapters around the world, empowers kids across all cultural backgrounds through service projects, global friendship and acts of kindness. The Peaceful Pen Pals program, just one of the many initiatives offered by Kids for Peace, is designed to connect kids through love, acceptance, compassion and kindness.
International Pen Friends
Founded in 1967, the International Pen Friends Club has connected millions of pen pals across the globe. Once you sign your kids up and pay a small membership fee, they’ll be provided a list of 4 to 14 pen friends from the same age group (starting at age 8) to choose from. Pen friends are typically paired by similar interests, and you can also request specific countries you’ re interested in. Your own address is also circulated to pen friends in the same age group, so you might get surprised with some international mail!

My name is Li Hua. I still remember my first day at senior high. I was both excited and nervous. My goal was to make a good first impression and maybe even find a few friends.
During the lunch break, I saw a boy sitting alone. He looked a bit shy. I gathered my courage, walked over and said, “Hi, mind if I join you?” He looked up, smiled, and said, “Sure!” That boy was Wei Fang. We started talking about our classes, our hobbies, and our fears about high school. We discovered we both loved basketball and computer games.
That simple “hello” was the start of a great friendship. We started studying together, playing basketball after school, and supporting each other through difficult times. It taught me a valuable lesson: a small act of kindness, like a smile or a greeting, can be very important. Pay attention to the power of reaching out to others.

C
D

They encourage us to be better versions of ourselves and offer a different perspective on life.
However, both family and friendship require care and effort to maintain. 20 . For family, it means spending quality time together and communicating openly.
