A. adults B. children of all ages C. kids under 8 years old D. children aged twelve and older B Even at 80, Mei Jingtian still patrols (巡逻) the Shixiaguan part of the Great Wall. With over 40 years of experience, he taps the overgrown ground with a wooden stick, warning wild animals for safety. He lives in Shixia village near the 8.6-kilometer part. Shixia villagers have a deep love for the wall. Mei remembers when he ran and played hide-and-seek with his friends on the large building as a child. However in 1979 when he returned to Shixia after working outside for years, he was shocked by the terrible situation of the old wall. “Some villagers even took stones from it to build their houses,” Mei says. To protect the wonder, Mei volunteered as a guardian, patrolling 20 kilometers daily, preventing people from taking stones, writing on the wall or dropping litter. In 1984, a Great Wall protection program started, with Mei’s effort encouraging many, and it was quickly picked up by villagers in Shixia. Realizing the importance of protection, more and more of them returned the stones they had taken and joined Mei on patrol. In 2006, as village head, Mei set up a volunteer protection organisation, and about 80 of 100 villagers joined as guardians. His niece, Liu Hongyan, encouraged by him, also became a guardian in 2019. “When I was a child, my uncle always told me his patrol stories and talked about the history of the Great Wall,” Liu says. “It is my duty and responsibility to protect the Great Wall.” Mei’s hard work has made a difference. From 2015 to 2023, 289 protection projects were allowed and thousands of guardians joined. Even though there is progress, the Shixiaguan part still remains closed to the public. “My biggest wish,” Mei says, “is to see the Great Wall well-protected and open for all to visit, encouraging more people to join us in protecting it.” 4. What made Mei Jingtian decide to protect the Great Wall? A. The dream of being a hero. B. The influence of his friends. C. Poor condition of the Great Wall. D. Encouragement from the villagers. 5. What do the underlined words “picked up” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Recognised. B. Finished. C. Managed. D. Developed. 6. Which of the following best describes Mei Jingtian? A. Careful and confident. B. Kind-hearted and humorous. C. Creative and curious. D. Responsible and strong-willed. 7. What does the text mainly talk about? A. A lifelong guardian of the Great Wall. B. Villagers’ deep love for the Great Wall. C. The progress in protecting the Great Wall. D. A practical Great Wall protection program. C After entering high school, you may find there are many clubs (俱乐部) at your school. You may think you’re too busy to join one. But as a former high school student, I can tell you joining a school club can greatly benefit (有益于) you. Your old friends may have left you after entering high school. And it means you need to meet new people. Joining a club allows you to talk with others and find those who have similar interests as you. Based on my experience, I have met some of my best friends from club activities which opened up many new doors for me. Another really nice thing about joining a club is that it looks really good on your applications (申请书). Trying new things is something that looks really good on any application. Being outgoing is considered a very good quality, which shows that you are determined and willing to put yourself out there and best of all try new things. What’s more, it can help you develop skills that can serve you during future college interviews. Besides joining a club can make students use their free time wisely. Most teens go to schools, then go back home and spend the rest of the day in front of a screen. Teens are also very likely to fall into the wrong crowd, which could lead to some bad results. Clubs are good places to spend time, with good people to fall back on. The most important reason why you should join a club is the long-term benefits it brings. The classroom isn’t the only learning environment in a school. The skills you learn in clubs are necessary ones that can be used in everyday life, which I think is the final goal of joining a club. Things such as meeting and speaking to new people, making the most of time, and being organized are those you will meet every single day of your life, but you can learn all of them in clubs. So if you haven’t joined a school club yet, you know what you should do now. 8. What can we learn from the second paragraph? A. Friends should share common interest. B. Joining a club helps one make friends. C. Joining a club benefits one’s mental health. D. Friends may leave each other sooner or later. 9. What does Paragraph 4 imply(暗示)? A. Teens today aren’t so interested in joining clubs. B. Some classrooms are not big enough for students. C. Doing club activities can help teens attend a good university. D. Joining a club helps keep students away from doing bad things. 10. In the author’s opinion, what’s the greatest benefit of joining a club? A. Developing new hobbies. B. Meeting different people. C. Getting useful life skills. D. Making use of your free time. 11. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To give tips on making new friends. B. To show ways to set up school clubs. C. To teach students to enjoy a better school life. D. To encourage high school students to join a club. D Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine. The new study was carried out by researchers from the University of British Columbia. The study used information collected from more than 28,000 seventh-grade Canadian students between 2014 and 2018. The students first answered what they did with their phones after school, and how much time they spent on their phones. Then, students reported how many days they had taken part in after-school activities such as sports or arts programs. After that, researchers asked students to describe their state of mind. For example, when given a statement such as “I start most days thinking that I will have a good day”, they could choose to what level they agreed with it on a scale (等级). Some of the results were expected, researchers said in the study. Students with no after-school activities usually had high levels of screen time, for example. And they expected girls would score higher on negative indicators (消极指标) of mental health, as earlier research had found that they tended to have higher levels of anxiety compared to boys. What was obvious, researchers say, is that even among students who took part in after-school activities, 46% still went beyond the recommended screen time of two hours. At the same time, 67% of students who didn’t take part in after-school activities also had more than two hours of screen time. Together, this suggests high screen time among teenagers generally. “The findings suggest that after-school activities are valuable for the happy growing of teenagers,” the study said. “While past studies have proved the importance of after-school activities for social and academic (学业的) development, the present study shows their importance for good mental health results.” 12. What is mentioned about the study? A. It was carried out by Canadian students. B. It involved over 28,000 seventh-graders. C. It only collected data on screen time. D. It was published in a medical textbook. 13. What do the researchers find about teenage girls? A. They seem to be less anxious than boys. B. They often have higher levels of satisfaction. C. They take more active part in after-school activities. D. Too much screen time may be more harmful to them. 14. What does the author want to show by using the numbers in paragraph 4? A. Earlier findings about screen time are wrong. B. High screen time is common among teenagers. C. No after-school activities mean no screen time. D. Screens attract teenagers more than after-school activities do. 15. Why are after-school activities so important according to the new study? A. They help to improve teenagers’ mental health. B. They are good for teenagers’ physical health. C. They encourage teenagers’ social development. D. They allow teenagers to become better learners. Everyone sometimes feels that their life is going nowhere. One Monday morning, he arrived at school wearing a new pair of sneakers (运动鞋) he’d saved up for months. “Look at Jacky’s shoes!” someone shouted, and a group of boys came to examine the brand. Jacky’s face turned red with pride. During lunch break, Jacky heard two girls talking, “Did you see Diana’s new handbag? It must cost a fortune!” He looked at his own bag, a simple cloth one his mother had made. Suddenly, he didn’t want to eat anything. That evening, he begged his parents for a designer bag, but they gently refused, explaining money should be spent on more important things. The next day, Jacky’s English teacher, Mrs Shirley, noticed his upset. After class, she pulled him aside and said, “I’ve observed (观察) you these days. Material things can bring short-term happiness, but it isn’t true happiness.” She showed him a photo of herself as a student, wearing a patched-up coat but holding a medal for winning a national writing competition. “This coat was my favorite because it kept me warm when I wrote,” she smiled. “Why not spend more time on meaningful things? The English Speech Contest is coming.” she added. Jacky was silent. That night, he lay in bed, staring at his sneakers. 根据第二段中“However in 1979, when he returned to Shixia after working outside for years, he was shocked by the terrible situation of the old wall. “Some villagers even took stones from it to build their houses,” Mei says. To protect the wonder, Mei volunteered as a guardian, patrolling 20 kilometers daily, preventing people from taking stones, writing on the wall or dropping litter. (然而,1979年,当他在外面工作多年后回到石峡时,他被老城墙的可怕状况震惊了。梅说:“一些村民甚至用石头盖房子。”为了保护这一奇迹,梅自愿成为一名守护者,每天巡逻20公里,防止人们拿石头、在墙上写字或乱扔垃圾)”可知,残破的长城使梅景田决定保护长城。故选C项。 【5题详解】 词句猜测题。根据画线部分的下文“Realizing the importance of protection, more and more of them returned the stones they had taken and joined Mei on patrol. (意识到保护的重要性,越来越多的人归还了他们带走的石头,加入了梅的巡逻)”可知,当地村民意识到要保护长城,开始着手进行保护计划。由此可知,长城保护计划得到了这里的村民的认可,画线部分意思应该与Recognised“认可,承认”一致。故选A项。 根据第一段中“Even at 80, Mei Jingtian still patrols (巡逻) the Shixiaguan part of the Great Wall. (即使在80岁的时候,梅景田仍然在石峡关长城巡逻)”、第二段中“To protect the wonder, Mei volunteered as a guardian, patrolling 20 kilometers daily, preventing people from taking stones, writing on the wall or dropping litter. (为了保护这一奇迹,梅自愿成为一名守护者,每天巡逻20公里,防止人们拿石头、在墙上写字或乱扔垃圾)”和第三段中“In 2006, as village head, Mei set up a volunteer protection organisation, and about 80 of 100 villagers joined as guardians. (2006年,作为村长,梅成立了一个志愿者保护组织,100名村民中约有80人作为守护人加入)”可知,梅景田志愿做长城的守护者,每天巡逻,防止长城被破坏,成立志愿者保护组织,80岁还在坚守这一使命。这些展现了他的责任感和坚强意志。故选D项。 【7题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中“Even at 80, Mei Jingtian still patrols (巡逻) the Shixiaguan part of the Great Wall. Besides, joining a club can make students use their free time wisely. 【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. Clubs are good places to spend time, with good people to fall back on.(青少年也很可能陷入错误的人群,这可能会导致一些不好的结果。俱乐部是消磨时间的好地方,有好朋友可以依靠)”可推知,加入社团有助于学生远离做坏事。故选D。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“The skills you learn in clubs are necessary ones that can be used in everyday life, which I think is the final goal of joining a club.(你在俱乐部学到的技能是日常生活中必须用到的技能,我认为这是加入俱乐部的最终目的)”可知,在作者看来,加入俱乐部最大的好处是获得有用的生活技能。 根据最后一段“So if you haven’t joined a school club yet, you know what you should do now.(因此,如果你还没有加入学校俱乐部,你知道你现在应该做什么)”可推知,作者写作的目的是鼓励高中生加入俱乐部。故选D。 D Teenagers who spend more time on after-school activities and less than two hours of screen time after school are more mentally healthy, according to a study published in the journal Preventive Medicine. 12. B 13. D 14. B 15. But don’t worry — you’ve learned Chinese for two years, and it’s quite normal to feel a little nervous at the beginning. Here are some suggestions. To begin with, you’d better start with simple daily conversations, like saying hello or talking about your interests. If you do this, you can not only build your confidence but also get more comfortable with the language. Besides, it also helps to watch Chinese short videos or listen to Chinese songs. By doing this, you will improve your listening and get used to natural expressions. Last but not least, don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Just try your best, and you’ll make progress. I hope you will find these suggestions helpful and have a wonderful time in the camp. Just try your best, and you’ll make progress. If you just try your best, you’ll make progress. 1】I’m sorry to hear that you’re worried about Chinese communication during the camp. He thought about the way Mrs Shirley’s eyes widened when she shared her own experiences. The next morning, Jacky made a decision. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Weeks later, Jacky stood on the school stage, holding a medal. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: The next morning, Jacky made a decision. He put on his old schoolbag made by his mother and left the new sneakers in the closet. Instead of focusing on material things, he threw himself into preparing for the English Speech Contest. He spent hours reading books, writing his speech, and practicing in front of the mirror. Whenever he felt tempted to envy his classmates’ fancy items, he thought of Mrs Shirley’s words and the photo of herself in the patched-up coat. He realized that true value came from within, not from what he owned. Weeks later, Jacky stood on the school stage, holding a medal. He had won first place in the English Speech Contest. As he looked out at the audience, he saw Mrs Shirley smiling proudly. Jacky’s heart was filled with a sense of achievement that no pair of sneakers or designer bag could ever bring. He realized that the happiness from personal growth and meaningful accomplishments was far more lasting and fulfilling. From that day on, he never felt pressured by his classmates’ possessions again. Instead, he focused on pursuing his passions, and becoming the best version of himself. 词汇激活: 行为类 ①投入:throw himself into /devote himself to /focused on ②练习:practice /rehearse/drill ③追求:pursue /seek/strive for 情绪类 ①骄傲:proudly /with pride ②成就感:a sense of achievement /a sense of accomplishment /a sense of fulfillment 【点睛】【高分句型1】Whenever he felt tempted to envy his classmates’ fancy items, he thought of Mrs Shirley’s words and the photo of herself in the patched-up coat. 2】As he looked out at the audience, he saw Mrs Shirley smiling proudly.
