Scientists found plants could “talk”. Lilach Hadany and her team recorded (录音) some plants in different places. Their recordings showed that the plants made some sounds.
After the scientists changed their recordings, people could hear plants clicking (咔嗒) clearly. They also found the plants hardly clicked when they had enough water. As their soil (土壤) got drier, they clicked more and more.
When the scientists cut off a part of the plants, the plants also clicked more. But the clicking wasn’t the same as when the plants needed water. The plants made more sounds when they felt bad. Because of these findings, the scientists thought that they can use a plant’s sounds to find out when it needs help, and what problem it is having.
Some questions come with the study. One important question is: Do plants make sounds to talk with each other? Other studies showed that plants seem to talk in some ways. If some animals are eating the plants, the plants will send chemicals into the air. Soon, nearby plants start to make other chemicals that don’t taste good to the animals. Maybe the sounds could work in the same way. Another question is: Is anything listening to the plants? Hadany says that she and her team will study if plants or animals will answer the clicking sounds of the plants.
The study changed people’s ideas about plants. Hadany says, “Even in a quiet place, there are sounds that we don’t hear, and those sounds have things to tell.”
45.What does the underlined word “hardly” in Paragraph 2 mean?

A.How do the plants make the clicking sounds?
B.Do plants make sounds to talk with other plants?

①Scientists have made an interesting discovery (发现) —plants are not silent. They can make sounds.
②A scientist and her team recorded tomato plants at different times. The result showed that these plants created ultrasonic (超声波) sounds. Humans couldn’t hear without the help of a computer. They were noises like clicking (咔哒声) sounds.
③As the scientists studied the sounds, they began to find some interesting facts. Plants made different clicking sounds at different times. For example, when plants had enough water, they were quiet, but when the earth got drier, they clicked more. The plants also clicked when someone cut off a leaf from them, because they were hurt. But the clicking wasn’t the same as it was when the plants needed water.
④Some scientists trained a computer AI system to recognize the different kinds of clicking sounds. It was able to find the difference between plants that needed water and plants with cuts. It means that one day we may be able to use these sounds to figure out plant problems. That could be very helpful to farmers.
⑤The team’s finding changes our traditional view of plants. As the scientist said, “Even in a quiet field, there are sounds made by plants, and these sounds carry information that could help us a lot.”

Do you want to grow plants in your home during the cold weather? If so, you may want to use some plants to make your home smell nice. We are talking about two kinds of indoor plants: rosemary (迷迭香) and bay laurel (月桂).
Both plants have good smell and it’s easy for you to plant them inside your home. You just put them near a window in the cold weather. As long as the temperature (温度) is warm in your house and you keep watering them, they will grow well. Both rosemary and bay laurel come from the warm places of the world.
The area is cool but not cold during winter because it gets lots of sunlight
For rosemary, water level is very important. You can’t water it too much. The plant needs a little wet soil (土壤). But too much water will injure the plant. It will grow slowly or even die. You can plant rosemary in the soil with some sand. The sand doesn’t keep much water, so this kind of soil will be the best place for rosemary to grow.
If you want to grow bay laurel inside, you can cut unwanted branches (枝杈) from the plant as it grows and make it look like a small tree. The plant will not die if you do this. Bay laurel has dark green leaves. it produces a nice smell when you cut its leaves. When you add them to the soup, it will taste better. Remember to wash the leaves before you put them into your dishes. So bay laurel is not only a plant, but also a kind of food.

It means that one day we may be able to use these sounds to figure out plant problems. That could be very helpful to farmers.

Do you want to grow plants in your home during the cold weather? If so, you may want to use some plants to make your home smell nice. We are talking about two kinds of indoor plants: rosemary (迷迭香) and bay laurel (月桂).

A.How do the plants make the clicking sounds?
B.Do plants make sounds to talk with other plants?
C.Will plants or animals answer plants’ clicking sounds?

54.Rosemary and bay laurel can_________.

My family garden
My family has a garden. There are many plants in it, such as hong mei, witchford and a dragon tree.
Let’s talk about hong mei! I think hong mei has the most beautiful flowers in the world. It has a bud. And it smells so sweet. Then I’ll tell you about the dragon tree! Dragon tree root is big and long and thick. Dragon tree leaves are very thick. Finally, it’s witchford! This name is a bit strange. Though it’s called witchford, it doesn’t blossom, no fruit!
My garden is very rich! I suggest you buy some plants, because plants can clean the air and absorb carbon dioxide!
