In the morning, you can embark on a guided nature walk through the meadows, learning about the different plants and animals. Or, if you’re feeling more adventurous, you can start a moderate mountain hike, taking in the breathtaking views from the lower slopes. In the afternoon, relax by the stream, dipping your toes in the cool water, or try your hand at fishing. For those who prefer more active pursuits, there are open areas where you can play frisbee or have a picnic.(第二天,您有多种活动可以选择。 “Accommodation choices”部分中“*A 30% discount is available for students and seniors.(学生和老年人可享受 30%的折扣。)” 故选A。 根据文章最后一段“If this enchanting retreat in Mystic Valley has sparked your interest, don’t miss out Click here to book your dream vacation and create memories that will last a lifetime.( 如果这个位于神秘山谷的迷人度假胜地已经让您心动不已,那就千万不要错过哦! B。 B My fingers trembled as I signed the pre-medical application form. The watercolor brushes on my desk stared back at me like abandoned friends. I’m Lora, an 18-year-old who secretly drew brain diagrams on napkins while classmates drew cartoons. “Art feeds the soul but starves the body,” Mom always said. Her words haunted me as my biology textbooks slowly buried my drawing pads. Then came the school career fair that changed everything. Dr. Eleanor Whitman from Harvard asked us to list our “hidden skills”. My hand shook as I wrote “observing details”—something I’d learned from painting flower petals. “That’s medical research’s most needed skill!” she exclaimed, sharing how a student turned microbiology notes into textbook illustrations. My lab partner whispered, “Remember our photosynthesis (光合作用) comic?” For the first time, my two worlds didn’t feel so separate. The real surprise came during hospital volunteering. Watching surgeries, I noticed something—the steady hands of doctors reminded me of my brushwork. When a boy struggled to describe his pain, I drew a fire-breathing dragon on his cast. “You made medicine speak,” the nurse said. Slowly, my drawing pads filled with cells that looked like colored-glass art and X-rays arranged like abstract paintings. Mr. Dawson, our career counselor, helped connect these dots. On his whiteboard, my medical knowledge and art skills overlapped in a bright yellow circle labeled “Medical Illustration”. He showed me job listings I never knew existed—graphic designers for science apps, 3D modelers for anatomy (解剖) classes. “Your ‘impractical’ skill makes you stand out,” he said, pointing to my dragon drawing now used in pain management workshops. Today, my microscope and paintbrushes share the same desk. The same hands that once hesitated between them now create 3D models of viruses for vaccine education. Sometimes I teach young patients to draw their feelings instead of describing them. My story isn’t about heart and reality canceling each other out—they just multiply possibilities. 4. What can be inferred about Lora from paragraph 1? A. She had given up the hobby of drawing. B. She was excited about studying medicine. C. She felt torn between art and medical study. D. She regretted not practicing painting earlier. 5. Dr. Eleanor thought of Lora’ s “hidden skills” as ______. A. a plus. B. a leisure. C. a distraction. D. a burden. 6. How did Lora’s hospital experience influence her? A. It helped develop her surgical skills. B. It directed her toward doctor training. C. It boosted her enthusiasm for abstract art. D. It convinced her of art’s role in healthcare. 7. What message does the author want to convey? A. Follow the beaten track to success. B. A picture is worth a thousand words. C. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. D. Two strings to your bow light the way. C 5. A 6. D 7. 根据第一段““Art feeds the soul but starves the body,” Mom always said. Her words haunted me as my biology textbooks slowly buried my drawing pads.(“艺术滋养灵魂,但会饿肚子”妈妈总是这么说。 Eleanor Whitman from Harvard asked us to list our “hidden skills”. My hand shook as I wrote “observing details”—something I’d learned from painting flower petals. “That’s medical research’s most needed skill!” she exclaimed, sharing how a student turned microbiology notes into textbook illustrations.(哈佛大学的埃莉诺·惠特曼博士让我们列出自己的“隐藏技能”。 故选A。 根据第三段“Watching surgeries, I noticed something—the steady hands of doctors reminded me of my brushwork. When a boy struggled to describe his pain, I drew a fire-breathing dragon on his cast. “You made medicine speak,” the nurse said.(在观看手术时,我注意到了一些事情 —— 医生稳定的手让我想起了我的绘画技巧。 根据最后一段“Today, my microscope and paintbrushes share the same desk. The same hands that once hesitated between them now create 3D models of viruses for vaccine education. Sometimes I teach young patients to draw their feelings instead of describing them. My story isn’t about heart and reality canceling each other out—they just multiply possibilities.(如今,我的显微镜和画笔共用一张桌子。 D。 C In 1961, MIT meteorologist Edward Lorenz was inputting numbers into a weather prediction program. His model was based on a dozen variables, the value of one being 0.506127. When he ran the model again, he rounded that number to 0.506, and then left the room to grab a coffee. When he came back, he discovered this tiny change had resulted in a dramatically different weather prediction. When presenting his groundbreaking model of chaos and the potential of extreme chaotic unpredictability at the 1972 meeting, Lorenz posed the question: “Does the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil set off a tornado in Texas?” Richard ·A· Anthes, former president of the University Corporation, says Lorenz was illustrating how, “in a system of apparently simple mathematical equations (方程式), a tiny change in the initial position of the particle can cause huge changes in its future position.” This analogy, so simply and beautifully expressed with Lorenz’s fascinating metaphor (隐喻), captured the imaginations of scientists and the public alike. The butterfly effect “disrupted science at a philosophical level, showing that modeling the future is only predictable to an extent”, explains Bo-Wen Shen, an associate professor at San Diego State University. Shen thinks this is because the idea that even the slightest changes may have significant impacts offers hope to individuals, encouraging them to take small actions that could have a profound and positive effect. The concept has been the subject of films and social media where people shared their butterfly effect stories: seemingly random events — a car breaking down, a missed train, a broken shoe — that lead to significant moments in their life. These stories often misunderstand Lorenz’s original concept and more accurately describe a coincidence. The main disconnect lies in the belief that the ability of a tiny change to create an organized disturbance at large distances is a real phenomenon. Tim Palmer, a climate physics professor at Oxford, argues that Lorenz’s butterfly effect illustrates how weather emerges from independent atmospheric patterns interacting in fleeting (闪现的), collective ways. In 2017, he said we could imagine weather like a set of Russian dolls: a large low-pressure system holds turbulent thunderstorms, which contain smaller clouds and eddies (漩涡), with even tinier eddies inside. His idea about how to understand the butterfly effect is “there are limited predictability horizons which cannot be extended by reducing uncertainty in initial conditions”. Shen says the butterfly effect is best illustrated using this proverb-like folktale by poet George Herbert in 1640: “For want of a nail, the shoe was lost. For want of a shoe, the horse was lost. For want of a horse, the rider was lost. For want of a rider, the battle was lost. For want of a battle, the kingdom was lost. And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.” 8. What did Lorenz find when coming back from grabbing a coffee? A. One of the variables was rounded off. B. His lab would have to run a model again. C. He had made a mistake in entering numbers. D. A tiny change led to an entirely different outcome. 9. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about? A. Real life examples for the public. B. The significance of the butterfly effect. C. The influence of the butterfly effect. D. The misunderstanding of the butterfly effect. 10. What does the underlined word “turbulent” probably mean in the 6th paragraph? A. Lasting. B. Disordered. C. Predictable. D. Imaginary. 11. What can we learn about the butterfly effect from the passage? A. It shows metaphorically how tiny details can reshape future. B. Its popularity improves people’s awareness of coincidence. C. It contributes greatly to the precision of modelling the future. D. Improving its initial data helps extend weather predictability. D 9. D 10. B 11. 根据第一段中的“When he came back, he discovered this tiny change had resulted in a dramatically different weather prediction.(当他回来时,他发现这个微小的变化导致了一个截然不同的天气预报结果)”可知,洛伦兹取咖啡回来后发现,一个微小的数值变化带来了完全不同的结果。 根据第五段中的“These stories often misunderstand Lorenz’s original concept and more accurately describe a coincidence. The main disconnect lies in the belief that the ability of a tiny change to create an organized disturbance at large distances is a real phenomenon.(这些故事往往误解了洛伦兹的原始概念,更准确地说,它们描述的是一种巧合。 根据第六段中的“Tim Palmer, a climate physics professor at Oxford, argues that Lorenz’s butterfly effect illustrates how weather emerges from independent atmospheric patterns interacting in fleeting (闪现的), collective ways. In 2017, he said we could imagine weather like a set of Russian dolls: a large low-pressure system holds turbulent thunderstorms, which contain smaller clouds and eddies (漩涡), with even tinier eddies inside.(牛津大学气候物理学教授蒂姆·帕尔默认为,洛伦兹的蝴蝶效应揭示了天气是如何由独立的大气模式以短暂、集体的方式相互作用而形成的。 根据第二段洛伦兹提出的问题“Does the flap of a butterfly’s wings in Brazil set off a tornado in Texas?(巴西一只蝴蝶扇动翅膀,会在德克萨斯州引发龙卷风吗?)”、第三段对蝴蝶效应的解释“Richard ·A· Anthes, former president of the University Corporation, says Lorenz was illustrating how, “in a system of apparently simple mathematical equations (方程式), a tiny change in the initial position of the particle can cause huge changes in its future position.” 故选A项。 D Are you a logical thinker, or would you say that you’re more free-spirited and artistic? If you’re the former, somebody’s probably told you at some point that you’re a left-brained person, and if you’re the latter, right-brained. The idea that the right half of the brain is the creative half and the left half is the analytical (分析的) half and that our individual characteristics are determined by which half is dominant is widespread in popular psychology. However, this idea is a fiction. Although we all obviously have different personalities and talents, there’s no reason to believe these differences can be explained by the dominance of one half of the brain over the other half. Recent research using brain imaging technology hasn’t found any evidence of hemispheric (脑半球的) dominance. Math, for example, requires logical thought and, thus, is generally said to be connected with the left brain. But mathematics involves a highly creative effort in addition to being a logical one. So would a gifted mathematician be a right-brained or a left-brained person? If there’s no evidence for the fiction of right-brained and left-brained people, why do so many people accept it? Perhaps it just makes intuitive (直觉) sense that people’s brains would be dominant on one side or the other just as their hands, feet, or eyes are. It may also have something to do with our seemingly unlimited appetite that allows us to sort ourselves (and our friends) into “types” based on our emotional and intellectual characteristics. When people are offered general descriptive statements that are presented as individualized descriptions of their own personalities, they tend to accept them as meaningful and true, especially if the statements are positive. The “insights” they generate are both universal and congenial (合意的). After all, who would reject a description of themselves as “artistic and creative” or “reasonable and analytical”? The fiction is popular, in the end, because it gives us a “scientific” way to talk about our favorite subject — ourselves. 12. Which is a common belief about people’s individual characteristics? A. A logical thinker is right-brained. B. An artist and poet is left-brained. C. The dominant half of the brain determines one’s characteristics. D. The dominant half of the brain is not related to one’s characteristics. 13. Why does the author mention mathematics in paragraph 2? A. To contradict a popular belief. B. To show math is a logical subject. C. To emphasize the significance of creativity. D. To highlight the importance of logical thinking. 14. Why do many people believe in the left-brain/right-brain theory? A. This theory is widespread and popular. B. It provides a way for them to sort personalities. C. Scientific studies have already confirmed its accuracy. D. Brain imaging technique has shown hemispheric differences. 15. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. Why Are Left-Brained People Smarter? B. The Science of Math: Left or Right Brain? C. The Truth Behind Hemispheric Dominance D. Ways to Develop Logical and Creative Thinking 【答案】12. C 13. A 14. B 15. 根据第一段中的“The idea that the right half of the brain is the creative half and the left half is the analytical (分析的) half and that our individual characteristics are determined by which half is dominant is widespread in popular psychology.(右脑是创造性的一半,左脑是分析性的一半,我们的个人特征由哪一半占主导地位决定,这种观点在大众心理学中很普遍。)” 根据第二段中的“Recent research using brain imaging technology hasn’t found any evidence of hemispheric (脑半球的) dominance. Math, for example, requires logical thought and, thus, is generally said to be connected with the left brain. But mathematics involves a highly creative effort in addition to being a logical one. So would a gifted mathematician be a right-brained or a left-brained person?(最近使用脑成像技术的研究没有发现任何半球优势的证据。 故选A。 根据第三段中的“It may also have something to do with our seemingly unlimited appetite that allows us to sort ourselves (and our friends) into “types” based on our emotional and intellectual characteristics.(这也可能与我们看似无限的欲望有关,这种欲望让我们根据自己的情感和智力特征将自己(和我们的朋友)分类为“类型”。)” 根据第一段中的“The idea that the right half of the brain is the creative half and the left half is the analytical (分析的) half and that our individual characteristics are determined by which half is dominant is widespread in popular psychology. However, this idea is a fiction.(右脑是创造性的一半,左脑是分析性的一半,我们的个人特征由哪一半占主导地位决定,这种观点在大众心理学中很普遍。 One of the most common mistakes people make when trying to improve their health is attempting too many sudden and great changes. Crash diets, extreme workout plans, or sudden sleep adjustments often fail because they’re unsustainable. ____16____ Here are some practical yet powerful tips to help you: Start with small, achievable goals. ____17____ For example, they hope to run 5 miles daily without prior training. Instead, they should begin with manageable steps — take the stairs instead of the elevator, or do 10 minutes of stretching each morning. These minor adjustments prevent burnout while steadily improving your strength and endurance. ____18____ Being too strict with what one eats often backfires. This often leads to quick weight regain and frustration. Instead of banning foods, focus on adding more whole, nutrient-rich options like vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats. For example, swap soda for sparkling water with lemon, or replace white bread with whole-grain alternatives. Small, sustainable changes lead to lasting results without the frustration of yo-yo dieting. Prioritize sleep for overall well-being. In today’s fast-paced world, sleep is often sacrificed for productivity or entertainment. ____19____ Sleep deprivation weakens immunity, increases stress hormones, and even contributes to weight gain. To improve sleep quality, establish a calming bedtime routine — dim the lights, avoid screens an hour before bed, and keep a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends. Stay active throughout the day. Sitting for long periods is linked to poor circulation, back pain, and metabolic issues. If you have a desk job, set reminders to stand up and move every hour. ____20____ Simple activities like walking during phone calls or doing light stretches can boost energy, improve posture, and enhance mental clarity. A. Be consistent rather than extreme. B. Focus on nutrition, not just dieting. C. Listen to your body’s needs and adjust accordingly. D. It can help reduce stress and improves circulation. E. The best habits are those you can maintain without feeling deprived. F. Many people get discouraged because they start with too high goals. G. You might think you can go with little of it, but your body pays the price. E 17. F 18. B 19. G 20. 【16题详解】 由上文“Crash diets, extreme workout plans, or sudden sleep adjustments often fail because they’re unsustainable.(速成节食、极端锻炼计划或突然的睡眠调整往往会失败,因为它们难以持续。)”可知,此处指出极端改变的弊端,空格处需引出可持续习惯的重要性,E项“The best habits are those you can maintain without feeling deprived.(最好的习惯是那些你可以在不感到匮乏的情况下维持的习惯。)” 【17题详解】 由下文“For example, they hope to run 5 miles daily without prior training. Instead, they should begin with manageable steps — take the stairs instead of the elevator, or do 10 minutes of stretching each morning. As we passed the Eaton’s department store’s window, we stopped as usual to have a look and do a bit of dreaming. The beautifully decorated window display held the best toys ever. There were dolls much too pretty to play with. And they all lay beneath a surprisingly fantastic dress. Mother’s eyes were glued to its shining red satin (缎子). “My goodness,” she whispered. “Look at that!” Then, mother looked down at her own coat-she had worn the heavy grey wool coat every winter for as long as I could remember. Mom was forever doing chores-washing laundry, tending the pigs and working in the garden-so she always wore housedresses and an apron (围裙) to protect the front. She did have one or two “special” dresses saved for church on Sundays. Also, she managed to make almost all of our clothes. They weren’t fancy, but they were comfortable. “What a silly dress!” She shook her head. “Who on earth would want such a big dress?” As we continued down the street, mother turned her head for one more look. “My goodness! You’d think they’d display something a person could use!” Mother’s Day was nearing and the red dress was soon forgotten. Mother, of all people, was not one to spend money on items that were not practical. “There are things we need more than this.” She’d always say. Choosing a gift for Mother’s Day for her was quite hard. When Dad and I asked, she thought carefully then asked for some tea towels, face cloths or a new basin. On our last trip to town before Mother’s Day, we were driving up Main Street when Mother suddenly shouted in surprise: “Look!” She pointed excitedly as Dad drove past Eaton’s. “That big red dress is gone,” she said in disbelief. “Who’d be fool enough to buy such a dress?” Mother questioned, shaking her head. I was almost certain that I noticed a trace of longing (一丝渴望) in her voice. On Mother’s Day, a box wrapped “Eaton’s Finest Basin” was delivered to our house. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “Oh Frank…” She choked up, tears welling up in her eyes. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文: On Mother’s Day, a box wrapped “Eaton’s Finest Basin” was delivered to our house. “Oh Frank,” she praised, “just what I wanted” Dad was sitting in the chair, a huge grin on his face. “Only a fool wouldn’t give a priceless wife like mine exactly what she wants for Mother’s Day.” he laughed. “Go ahead, open it up and make sure there are no chips.” Mother quietly opened the box to find a big white dishpan— overflowing with deep red satin across her lap. With her hands trembling, she touched the elegant material of the Big Red. “Oh Frank…” She choked up, tears welling up in her eyes. Her face was as bright as the star that twinkled on our tree in the corner of the small room. Her faint attempt at scolding came “You shouldn’t have…” Dad smiled. “Let’s see if it fits,” he laughed, helping her put on the marvelous dress over her shoulders. I watched in surprise, attracted by the beauty of my mother I had never noticed before. “You look beautiful,” my dad whispered to my mom— and she surely did! 词汇激活 ①发现:find/spot ②颤抖:tremble/shake ③责怪:scold/blame 情绪类 ①平静:quietly/calmly ②惊讶:in surprise/in shock 【点睛】[高分句型1]With her hands trembling, she touched the elegant material of the Big Red.(运用了with复合宾语结构) [高分句型2]“Let’s see if it fits,” he laughed, helping her put on the marvelous dress over her shoulders.(运用了现在分词短语作状语) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2025年10月 绵阳南山中学高2023级“绵阳一诊”热身考试 英语试题 本试卷满分150分,考试时间120分钟。 1. C In 1961, MIT meteorologist Edward Lorenz was inputting numbers into a weather prediction program. A Lasting. B. Disordered. D Are you a logical thinker, or would you say that you’re more free-spirited and artistic? Perhaps it just makes intuitive (直觉的) sense that people’s brains would be dominant on one side or the other just as their hands, feet, or eyes are. Ways to Develop Logical and Creative Thinking One of the most common mistakes people make when trying to improve their health is attempting too many sudden and great changes. It was mid-February, and the mountain air remained bitterly cold. You’d think they’d display something a person could use!” Mother’s Day was nearing, and the red dress was soon forgotten. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
