I had to choose extra-curricular activities, too.I tried to join the school football team, but the coach told me that I didn't play well enough.Obviously,I was unhappy, but I won't quit.I'll find a way to improve on my own so that I can make the team next year.I joined a volunteer club instead.Every Wednesday,we work at a soup kitchen and hand out food to homeless people in the community.
I know I'll have to study harder as a senior high school student and get used to being responsible for a lot more.I'm a bit worried about keeping up with the other students in my advanced course, and it'll be quite difficult to get used to all the homework.Still,I'm happy to be here.Studying hard isn't always fun,but I'll be well prepared for university or whatever else comes in the future.

[佳句欣赏]
1.My adviser recommended that I should sign up for advanced literature because I like English and I'm good at it.

[翻译] 我的指导老师建议我选修高级文学,因为我喜欢英语而且成绩不错。
2.I'm a bit worried about keeping up with the other students in my advanced course, and it'll be quite difficult to get used to all the homework.
[分析] 这是一个由and连接的并列复合句。前面分句句子主干是I'm a bit worried about...,其后keeping up with...为非谓语动词短语作宾语。and后面分句是it作形式主语,真正的主语是动词不定式短语to get used to...。
[翻译] 我有点担心在高级课程上跟不上其他同学,而且要适应这么多的家庭作业也很难。

So what will we buy tomorrow?
I'm not going to buy anything for myself.I'm going shopping for two gifts. One is a birthday gift for my younger sister, who will turn thirteen in just two days. The other is for my mother as Mother's Day is just two days after my sister's birthday.I'll buy her a new phone.
Susan will go to a party next week. She needs a new dress and a new pair of shoes for it.So that's why she's going shopping tomorrow.Since she isn't my sister's friend, she won't buy a gift for her.
David is also going to pick a Mother's Day gift.He planned to buy either a purse or a dress at first, but now he decides to buy his mother a bag.

Year-12 student Noah Little has already sat his first Chinese-speaking exam and said it was“the easiest exam I've ever done”.That view is not surprising given that the Wagga Wagga High School student loves language—so much that he has built a Chinese translation app.
Noah said his love of language was encouraged by his community.“Wagga Wagga is a place full of people from different cultures, and sometimes when I meet new people who have trouble speaking English,I like to talk to them in their own language,” he said.“I also have a few Chinese friends so I think it will be cool to talk to them in their language.”

He said learning computer programming to build the app had been like studying another language. With the end of school around the corner,Noah said he would like to pursue (追求) both his interest in computer programming and languages.“I'm planning to work for a year and save so I can go on to university as I really want to make a career (事业) out of one of these two topics.”

While most people are inspired by the motto(座右铭),“You're never too old to learn something new,” Kimeila Campbell has proven that a person is never too young to bring about change.Born in Jamaica and later moving to the United States,Kimeila grew up watching her entrepreneur(企业家) mother run an event space.
“Seeing her go through ups and downs made me want to be an entrepreneur too,” said Kimeila, who sometimes helped her mum at Glitz Elite Events Studio.“I thought for my age, maybe I'm too young. But my mum said it could help other kids and teen entrepreneurs instead of just making money for myself.”
With this goal, she started her own monthly magazine when she celebrated her 14th birthday. Her YNTY Magazine—which stands for You're Never Too Young—aims to inspire young and upcoming entrepreneurs and public figures. It is to inspire people younger than 18 to follow their dreams whatever their age.
“Nowadays, teenagers look up to rich women and men on social media and dream to be like them, without any idea of the price they had to pay to get to where they are now,” Kimeila said.“Consider your choices carefully and make goals for where you want to be in the future.”
In the magazine,Kimeila shows hot topics, daily sayings,as well as suggestions from professionals and those who have made it in their industries.Meanwhile, the YNTY Magazine also includes a special part in which necessary steps are given to parents of young entrepreneurs to help and guide their children.“One thing I'd like my readers to know is that...if you believe you can do it,YNTY Magazine is where you can come to find a community of comfort and confidence to support your dreams.”
Kimeila refused to wait until she's older to make a difference in the world. In the next five years, the young girl wants to make the YNTY Magazine become available on news stands around the world,in various languages;become a household name and the kidpreneurs go to for advice and inspiration whenever they feel discouraged or overwhelmed (不知所措的).

When we're in trouble,we always turn to our parents for help. But would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends in the school playground or in the lunch queue? Social networking sites have become extensions (延伸) of the school hallways,so would you add your parents as“friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends?
In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with the latest technology and parents were left behind, content to continue their day-to-day lives as they always had because they had no need to know more about technology. However, more and more parents are beginning to realize just how important social networks are in their lives. This realization has given many parents the motivation (动机) to educate themselves about social networking sites.
These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them. There's also a certain amount of control over privacy(隐私) that we don't get in real life.Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated(违背) when we must accept a“friend” request from a parent or family member.
It's a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand,we don't want to “refuse” their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel we have something to hide.On the other hand,if we do accept, then we could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way we did before.
A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn't take it personally if their children overlook (忽略) their requests. When a teenager overlooks a parent's friend request,it doesn't necessarily mean that he is hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of his life where he wants to be independent.
Perhaps talking with parents and explaining would help soften the blow if you do choose not to add them to your friend list.

A.Their parents make negative comments on them.
B.They hide something from their parents.
C.They are unwilling to be watched by parents.
D.Their parents tend to fall behind in technology.
答案:C
解析:推理判断题。根据第四段中的“On the other hand,if we do accept, then we could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way we did before.”可知,如果我们接受了父母加为好友的请求,会有被监视的感觉,不再像以前那样随意发表评论或交流。由此可知,青少年拒绝父母好友请求的理由可能是不愿意被父母监视。故选C项。
34.What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Online life. B.The difficult choice.
C.Parents' request. D.Teenagers' refusal.

35.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Privacy online.
B.Parents' friend requests.
C.The generation gap.
D.Social networks.

Tips on How to Study Smarter
Having good study skills is always helpful. However, there are some situations that can distract you from your lessons.Furthermore, you are likely to learn without a teacher or parent looking over your shoulder. 36 Here are some tips to develop good study skills.
·Practise, practise, practise! Musicians practise their instruments.Athletes practise sports skills. The same should go for learning. 37 In one study, students took practice tests over several weeks. On the final test, they scored better than those who studied in the normal way.
·Test yourself. Before big tests, you may often cover up the notes, and then try to recall them.Such practice can help nearly everyone. You can put questions down on one side of the paper and the answers on the other side. 38 Teachers often dig deeper. They don't just ask shallow questions.
·Learn from mistakes. A secret of science: Mistakes help understanding. If you don't find out what the answer is,you're wasting your time.Checking the answers can make your study time more efficient.Check to see if you are right. You can then focus on what you get wrong. 39
· 40 You know you should practise some good study skills, yet many don't actually do these things.Often you fail to plan ahead. So do make plans. And try to stick to a routine, too. For example, you can have a set time and place where you do schoolwork and study. And put your phone somewhere else while you work.
A.Focus on your plan.
B.You can add more skills.
C.Make a plan and stick to it.
D.Mistakes are actually the primary key to learning.
E.Try to test yourself in the way the teacher asks questions.
F.So you will have to manage your time and study more on your own.

Be a Star of Your Own Movie
I always loved movies. It didn't even matter if I went to see them alone. In the movies, nothing seemed impossible:I became the star who leads her team to victory,or the teenager who bridges the gap between the races at her high school,or even the young woman who falls in love with a handsome nobleman from the nineteenth century. And I would always live happily ever after.
In fact,I liked to pretend what was happening on-screen was happening in my own life as well.I liked the happy endings, the perfect happy endings.I wanted my life to be like that, happy and wonderful.I wanted to escape the stress of family and friends and school. My only escape from the reality that trapped me was heading for a movie theatre.
I hadn't always been this way.As a young girl,I was outgoing and friendly, and even joined in after-school activities.High school was different, though.I became quiet and shy.
My parents were worried about me.They asked me to call old friends or get more involved with school. After promising my parents a thousand times that I would call one of my old friends,I finally agreed. The only number I knew by heart was Sarah's,so I called her.Sarah herself was pretty close to perfect: straight-A student, class president, off to Yale in the fall, beautiful, sweet, brilliant. We decided to meet for a pizza lunch.
We ate and talked and caught up on old times.I told her how difficult it had been for me in the past few years and how unbearable the pressure had been.“I wish my life was the way it is in the movies,”I sighed.“It would be so much easier.”I looked down through my fingers, face in my hands.“I understand,”she said.I looked up at her, questioning her with my eyes.

She explained she used to escape her realities by doing the same thing.“Then one day,”Sarah explained,“I started to think about why I wanted to be like the people in the movies.”And then it came to my mind that they had their stories already written out for them. However,I had the ability to write my own story.“If I had the power to decide on the story of my life movie, then why wouldn't I make it an inspiring one,a movie with a happy ending?”she said.“You are the star of your own movie. Now all you need is your story,”she added.
Inspired by her words,I decided that I would produce my own life story. No other actress could fill my role.It was up to me to produce, direct and edit my life.I would set my own goals I was able to achieve from now on.There can be no success without the possibility of failure. The only sure way of failing is by refusing to try.I looked over at Sarah, and said “Thank you”,holding her hand firmly. The curtain rose, and my film began.
