阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

In the state of Maryland, a girl was born into slavery (奴隶制) in 1820. Her parents named her Araminta Harriet Ross. She was to become Harriet Tubman. She was one of about one million Africans in slavery in the United States.
From the age of five, Harriet Tubman's owners made her work very hard. First, she cared for the child of the farm owner. Then, she did hard work on large farms.
Although she could not read or write, Tubman learned from her parents to do what was right. Through her whole life, Tubman put herself in danger to help other people.
One such act changed her life when she was 13 years old. Because she helped another slave, her owner threw a piece of metal at her and it hit her on the head. She was badly hurt. For the rest of her life, Tubman's head wound caused problems for her.
When she was about 25 years old, Harriet married a free black man named John Tubman. But she was still a slave. Her life was so difficult that she decided to escape. She travelled for 145 kilometres, and finally crossed into the North. Tubman became a free woman.
But Tubman could not leave her family enslaved in the South. So she travelled back to help them escape as well. Then, she made many trips and guided about 300 slaves to freedom. Tubman also fought bravely in the American Civil War and in 1865 slavery was not allowed in the US.
Harriet Tubman died in 1913. Her memory brings hope to many people—especially to those who fight for justice (正义). She encouraged people to never give up.“If you want a taste of freedom, keep going.”

Maricel Apatan, 22, stands in the kitchen of the Edsa Shangri-La Hotel in Manila, preparing to decorate a cheese cake. It would seem to be a routine task for a cake chef, but Maricel is no ordinary chef—she has no hands.
Maricel has come a long way since the day in September 2000 when she and her uncle were attacked near their farm. Fortunately, both of them survived, but the 11-year-old girl lost her hands. In 2004, she entered a Manila training centre for people with disabilities. She learned how to write and do housework and, more importantly, came to terms with her disability.
After graduating from high school, she took a two-year Hotel and Restaurant Management course and flourished even though she was the only disabled student in the course. After she moved back to Manila to continue her studies, the media started reporting on this determined young woman. She didn't shy away from the attention. “I wanted others living with disabilities to believe it's possible to live a normal life,” Maricel says.
When managers at the Edsa Shangri-La Hotel saw Maricel on television, they hired her as part of the hotel's Care for People project. She has also accomplished her goal of inspiring others. One of them is Ronelyn Calumpiano, a 21-year-old with cerebral palsy (脑瘫). She saw Maricel on television and was moved by her confidence. Ronelyn will soon start classes and is already planning a career in IT.
Maricel's three younger sisters have moved to Manila. She pays for the rent of their small apartment, while their parents look after their family farm in Mindanao. “It is difficult to make ends meet, but I won't lose hope. I believe anything is possible if you dream, work hard and pray.”

Not long ago, few little girls imagined they could grow up to become astronauts. For years in the United States, only men had that opportunity. In 1983, that changed. Sally Ride made history by becoming the first American woman to travel to space.
On Monday, Ride died at the age of 61. “Sally was a national hero and a powerful role model,” President Barack Obama said in a statement. “She inspired generations of young girls to reach for the stars.”
Ride became interested in space when she was a kid. “If you asked me when I was 12 whether I wanted to be an astronaut, I'm sure I would have said yes,” she said in a 2010 interview. “But I didn't even think about that as a possible career.”
After studying physics in college and graduate school, Ride got her chance. She was accepted into NASA's astronaut training program in 1978, and then chosen to be the first American female in space. In 1983, she blasted into space aboard the Challenger shuttle. “There is no amusement park ride on the Earth that even comes close,” she said.
Ride returned to space on the Challenger a second time in 1984. Between the two missions, she spent a total of 343 hours in orbit. After that, she remained involved with the space program and also worked to share her passion for science with kids. She coauthored six science books for children, and started her own science education company.
Ride knew that she held a unique place in history. “I realized how important it was for a woman to break that barrier and open the door for other women to be able to do the same exciting things that men had been doing,” she said.
Since Ride's historic trip, more than 40 other American women have traveled to space. They all had Ride to thank for opening the door to the final frontier.

Life on the street is a constant struggle for homeless people. In times of extreme weather conditions, that struggle becomes even more difficult. Recently, homeless people across Chicago faced freezing to death if they couldn't find shelter for the night.
Thankfully, one local woman refused to let that happen. On January 30, 2018, 34-year-old Candice Payne, a local managing broker, was lucky enough to have shelter from the dangerous conditions.
“It was -20 ℃, and I knew they were going to be sleeping on ice and I had to do something,” said Payne. Payne started brainstorming different ways she could possibly help. Finally, she decided to see if there were any rooms available at local inns and hotels that she could get to help those stuck on the street.
For Payne, her mission was personal. According to Payne, her husband, Carlos Callahan, had lived on the streets at one point in his life. Based on his experiences, Payne knew that the homeless people still out on the street desperately needed help and that if she didn't step up to help, no one likely would.
However, when Payne explained what she was trying to do, many of the local hotels refused to allow her to pay for the rooms as they didn't want homeless people to stay in their rooms. “No one wanted them, but one hotel, the Amber Inn, was nice enough to allow me to buy the rooms,” said Payne.
Payne's selfless act made news across the country. However, she insisted she had never done it for attention. “I am a regular person,” said Payne, who spent thousands of dollars of her own money to help complete strangers. “It all sounded like a rich person did this, but I'm just a little black girl from the South Side.”

I know you get that sense from TV that you can be rich and successful without any hard work—your ticket to success is through rapping or basketball or being a reality TV star. __36__
The truth is, being successful is hard. You won't love every subject that you study. __37__ Not every homework assignment will seem completely relevant to your life right at this minute. And you won't necessarily succeed at everything the first time you try.
That's okay. __38__ JK Rowling—who wrote Harry Potter—her first Harry Potter book was rejected 12 times before it was finally published. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team. These people succeeded because they understood the secret of success—you can't let your failures define you. __39__ You have to let them show you what to do differently the next time. So if you get into trouble, that doesn't mean you are a troublemaker; it means you need to try harder to act rightly. __40__
A.If you get a bad grade, that doesn't mean you're stupid; it just means you need to spend more time studying.
B.Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who have had the most failures.
C.You have to let your failures teach you.

Hearing that, Einstein thought long and nodded __62__ (serious). From then on, his creativity __63__ (inspire). 第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Many people have role models or people they look up to in their life. They may be actors, super heroes, sports stars, and so on. For me, that person is my mom, who is very beautiful, and successful. Ever since I could remember, she has been right beside me supporting my dream or goal I was trying to reach. When I am older, I hope I could be there for my children the way she is for me.
The first thing I admire is her beauty. No matter what she wears, she always looks tidy. She has a beautiful big smile that can warm up a room. Her eyes are very light brownish green color, and just looking into them you can see all the love she has for others. My mom is pretty tall. I am lucky to inherit (继承) my mom's genes.
My mom also has brains. She got her undergraduate at Cal State Long Beach, and went on getting her Master's degree at Arizona State University in teaching. She has been teaching at Rhodes Junior High for almost 10 years as a seventh grade science teacher. To this day, she still loves every minute of it. She is a very hard worker and makes sure that every lesson she teaches keeps the students interested. She does her best to make sure everything is full of potential before presenting it to her class. I hope that when I am older, whatever career I choose, I will work just as hard to be successful as my mom.
My mom has always been there to make sure every dream or goal of mine will come true. I like dancing and I began to compete in dance competitions since I was five. A big part of dance life is travelling, for the most part, pretty far. Because my dad always goes on business trips, my mom always helps me to get to the places I needed to be. No matter what she was doing, she made sure I was there and on time with all my costumes, make-up, and dance shoes ready to perform. Thanks to my mom, now I am a famous dancer in my city.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
I'm fortunate enough to have a thoughtful enough mom to help me through hard times.
Everyone has one person they look up to as a role model.
I'm fortunate enough to have a thoughtful enough mom to help me through hard times. Ever since I could remember, my mom has done whatever she could to help me in numerous things. Whether I was struggling in a class or just needed someone to be there for support, my mom was always the first one there. In the fourth grade, I became very sick and fell far behind in school. I almost didn't pass a few exams due to absence, but my mom worked with me, stayed up late to help me, and talked to my teachers to ask for help. As a result, I caught up and moved into the fifth grade smoothly.
Everyone has one person they look up to as a role model. To me there is none other than my mom. She has beauty, brains, and one of the best hearts I know. Without her in my life, I would have no idea whether I can be a famous dancer. Someday, when I am older and have children of my own, I hope I can be just as great a parent as my mom.

We have to get up early to make our beds before our teacher comes to inspect. After breakfast, we have some free time. Yesterday, I went down to the nearby stream to fish, but the only thing I caught was a tree branch. In the afternoon, there are different activities like singing, horse riding and hiking. None is new to me. In the evening, everyone is given different tasks to get dinner ready. Yesterday I was in charge preparing the hot dogs, but I accidentally drop them in the fire. The other kids are always laughing at me about IT. At night, we sit around the camp fire and tell stories. That's the most interesting thing to me. But one night, while trying to find more sticks for the fire, I almost got lost in the forest. Well, today is another day, and I will go home the day after tomorrow.
