Applying to study in the UK is a straightforward process and we will guide you through it step by step.
Decide on a university or college and course
Coming to study in the UK is your opportunity to gain the skills, outlook and confidence you need to fulfil your potential. To ensure you choose the course that is right for you and for what you want to achieve, it is best to read as much as you can about the range of courses, colleges and universities available and compare them. It is also important to check the course entry requirements. You can do this using our course search tool, or the course profiles on the institutions’ websites. If you have any questions, you can contact the university directly, who will be very happy to help you find the information you need.
Register and apply
Applying for an undergraduate course in the UK is simple: there is one place where you can register and apply to all of the UK universities and colleges—you register and apply through UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service). Postgraduate courses in the UK have their own specific entry requirements and application processes, so check the individual course websites for instructions on how to apply. Click here to find out more about the application procedure.
Accept your offer
Your university or college will contact you (usually via email) to tell you whether or not you have received an offer to study. If you applied via UCAS it’s easy to track the status of your application at any time.
If you are accepted with an unconditional offer, then congratulations! You have a place and you can accept straightaway. If you are accepted with a conditional offer, the place is yours as long as you meet a few extra requirements. This could be achieving certain exam grades or English language test scores.

My almost 6-year-old son is currently crazy about Star Wars and Harry Potter. I know he’s young, but the movies and books bring up topics for us to sort through all the time — tough topics. A good chance for me! We read the books together; we watch the movies together. We’ve talked about many things that some parents of a 5-year-old might not talk about, but I want to have these conversations with my son.
Today, it was rainy and when the baby took her nap, I allowed him to watch a Star Wars movie as a reward for being so kind this morning to his sister who was feeling a little unhappy. As I was folding laundry, I said to him, very casually, “Wow, that Darth Vader really makes me sick.” My son chided me: “Mama, Darth Vader has good in him. I know he’s on the dark side, but he isn’t all bad.” This launched us into a conversation about good versus evil and how goodness can be found in anyone if we only look hard enough.
For the past week, I feel like I have been tested with various examples of people simply not being nice. And some people were rude for no apparent reason. A nurse was impatient with me on the phone when I called for a prescription. Little ears were listening in on all of those instances and after doing my best to be nice on the phone call with the nurse, I hung up and said to my husband, “Wow, what was wrong with her? She was so rude.” My boy said, “Mama, we all have a bad day. Be nice to her and she might be nice to you back.” This child teaches me lessons every day, and all we can do is treat people with kindness, as hard as it might be.
The nurse was probably exhausted from taking sick calls and maybe she simply needed a coffee break. I do know that those people were not on their best behavior or showing their best side but how many of us have been in those exact shoes? We all act in haste. We all speak in haste. We all do things we regret. And, if we were lucky, we were met with kindness instead of anger in return for our outburst.
My son reminded me today to be kinder and gentler to the people I meet with. I’m going to try harder this week. I’m going to try to smile when met with a frown.Like he mentions, even Darth Vader has good in him and maybe he just needs a little sympathy.
41. How does the writer react to her son’s recent interest?
A. Trying to persuade him to change his mind.
B. Using it as a chance to shorten their distance.
C. Trying to help him develop some more hobbies.
D. Using it as a chance to have a deep talk with him.
42. The underlined word “chided” in paragraph 2 means ________.
A. Appreciated. B. Supported . C. Criticized. D. Rejected.
43. The writer tried to be kind to the nurse on the phone because ________.
A. She didn’t want to annoy the nurse
B. she didn’t want to influence her kids negatively
C. she knew the nurse was unhappy that day
D. She had to get the important information
44. Which of the following words can be used to describe the author’s son?
A. Optimistic. B. Considerate. C. Selfless D. Brave
45. What’s the purpose of the passage?
A. To encourage people to find the good in others and treat them kindly.
B. To encourage people to sympathize with those in trouble.
C. To encourage people to smile to those unfriendly to them.
D. To encourage people to reward others’ kindness and help more people.

Starbucks is offering a coffee “click and collect “ service, introducing charging mats (充电垫) across all of its UK stores and promising the fastest Wi-Fi speeds on the high street to attract customers back after its tax controversies. Starbucks, the coffee giant, is investing £30m in its UK business to attract British caffeine-lovers back to its stores following a customer loss over its tax arrangements.
The company, which sparked widespread anger in 2012 over its low British tax payments, has since turned a profit in the UK and is now aiming to win back customers with a mobile ordering coffee service. “Today what we are focused on is the customer and developing the coffee shop experience.” Kris Engskov, Starbucks president of Europe, Middle East and Africa said.
The company’s mobile ordering app will offer consumers a click and collect service that allows them to order and pay for their coffee on the way to their nearest starbucks cafe. The business is also investing in having the fastest Wi-Fi on the high street to improve the experience of its average customer who spends 40 minutes online per visit.
Starbucks is also attempting to provide the answer to being out of batteries — the biggest problem of most iPhone users — by installing charging mats in the furniture in its stores. The wireless charging points were originally tested in January, focusing on city sites and then rolling it across stores. The last step of the technology drive is a new agreement with music downloading service which will run a jukebox (自动唱机) function in stores as well as urging people to use their Starbucks loyalty points on the service.
“The role of the coffee shop is basically changing across the world but it is particularly serious in the UK, the most competitive coffee market in the world, because it is just so competitive and it’s changing because people are increasingly busy. That’s well understood but the business is stressed by this move to digital where so much of your life is led through a device. It’s the little details about how we remove the barriers, whether it’s a queue, a click or giving someone secure Wi-Fi,” Mr Engskov said.
Mr Engskov also mentioned Starbucks’ potentially opening new cafes in UK supermarket chains including Aldi and Lidl. Sartbucks, which recently moved its European headquarters from Amsterdam to Chiswick, west London, is “now paying more UK business tax than we ever have,” the coffee boss said. “ Our customers are very loyal and the UK business is as healthy as it’s ever been”, he added.
46. What does the underlined word “sparked” mean?
A. Removed. B. Expressed. C. Caused. D. Avoided.
47. What can be inferred from the passage about the fastest Wi-Fi?
A. It can make customers spend 40 minutes per visit.
B. It can attract and keep more customers.
C. It can better customers’ shopping experience.
D. It can help customers find the nearest Starbucks café.
48. How does Starbucks solve the iPhone’s battery problem?
A. By offering Wi-Fi with faster speed. B. By running a jukebox function in stores.
C. By using the Starbucks loyalty points. D. By installing charging mats in its stores.
49. What can we learn about people’s busy life according to Mr Engskov?
A. It influences the coffee shop’s benefits.
B. It changes the coffee shop’s digital equipment.
C. It influences the use of Wi-Fi in coffee shops.
D. It changes the UK coffee’s production.
50. What’s Mr Engskov’s next plan?
A. Opening new cafes in UK supermarket chains.
B. Paying less UK corporation tax than before.
C. Moving the European headquarters to Amsterdam.
D. Removing the coffee shops from Aldi and Lidl.

Ralph Emerson once said that the purpose of life is not to be happy, but to be useful, to be loving, to make some difference in he world. While we appreciate such words of wisdom, we rarely try to follow them in our lives.
Most people prefer to live a good life themselves, ignoring their responsibilities for the world. This narrow perception of a good life may provide short-term benefits, but is sure to lead to long-term harm and suffering. A good life based on comfort and luxury may eventually lead to more pain because we spoil our health and even our character, principles, ideals, and relationships.
What then, is the secret of a good life? A good life is a process, not a state of being : a direction, not a destination. We have to earn a good life by first serving others without any expectation in return because their happiness is the very source of our own happiness. More importantly, we must know ourselves inside out. Only when we examine ourselves deeply can we discover our abilities and recognize our limitations, and then work accordingly to create a better world.
The first requirement for a good life is having a loving heart. When we do certain right things merely as a duty, we find our job so tiresome that we’ll soon burn out. However, when we do that same job out of love, we not only enjoy what we do, but also do it with an effortless feeling.
However, love alone is insufficient to lead a good life. Love sometimes blinds us to the reality. Consequently, our good intentions may not lead to good results. To achieve desired outcome, those who want to do good to others also need to equip themselves with accurate world knowledge. False knowledge is more dangerous than ignorance. If love is the engine of a car, knowledge is the steering wheel(方向盘). If the engine lacks power, the car can’t move; if the driver loses control of the steering, a road accident probably occurs. Only with love in heart and the right knowledge in mind can we lead a good life.
With love and knowledge, we go all out to create a better world by doing good to others. When we see the impact of our good work on the world, we give meaning to our life and earn lasting joy and happiness.
51. What effect does the narrow perception of a good life have on us?
A. Making us simple-minded B. Making us short-sighted.
C. Leading us onto a busy road. D. Keeping us from comfort and luxury.
52. According to the author, how can one gain true happiness?
A. Through maintaining good health.
B. By going through pain and suffering.
C. By recognizing one’s abilities and limitations.
D. Through offering help much needed by others.
53. According to Paragraph 4, doing certain right things with a loving heart makes one________.
A. less selfish B. less annoying
C. more motivated D. more responsible
54. In what case may good intentions fail to lead to desired results?
A. When we have wrong knowledge of the world.
B. When our love for the world is insufficient.
C. When we are insensitive to dangers in life.
D. When we stay blind to the reality.
55. According to Paragraph 5, life can be made truly good when ________.
A. inspired by love and guided by knowledge
B. directed by love and pushed by knowledge
C. purified by love and enriched by knowledge
D. promoted by love and defined by knowledge
After a long journey, I finally got to the hospital. Lying on the examination table while facing the painfully bright ceiling lights, I fidgeted, desperately trying to ignore the upsetting part of the situation. I attempted to focus on staying warm in the cold room, but what happened days ago kept running through my head—the intense pain, the overpowering fear, and the panicky steps in the Emergency Room. I was told I had broken a backbone. I now smiled recalling the innocence of my response: “Do I have to wear a support when I play football?”
I had waited for three months to find out whether I could play football again, but the thought of waiting another five minutes seemed impossible. Then Dr. Pittinger entered. He was friendly, but noticeably uncomfortable, almost sad. He told me that I would never be able to play football again.
The realization sank in immediately. I wasn’t surprised, or at least I shouldn’t have been, but that didn’t make the order any easier. I refused to accept the idea, and for months I continued to exercise. I worked out from five to six every morning. Though I was ashamed to wear the support, I wore it devotedly, with some false hope that the more I wore it, the quicker and better it would heal the backbone.
I was determined to play again.
The fact is that, just as the doctor ordered, I never played another quarter of football. After nights of coming home from exercising, barely able to walk, I finally gave in. For a while, giving up felt like an admitting of defeat rather than the acceptance of a truth that should have been painfully obvious, but over time, I realized like most difficult decisions I have made and will have to make, life would go on. Rather than stick to the undeniably unattainable, I understood that though this particular option was no longer open to me, I had countless others to make in its place.
And by the way, I’m a five-star football coach now.

根据第一段“My almost 6-year-old son is currently crazy about Star Wars and Harry Potter. I know he’s young, but the movies and books bring up topics for us to sort through all the time--tough topics. A good chance for me! We read the books together; we watch the movies together. We’ve talked about many things that some parents of a 5-year-old might not talk about, but I want to have these conversations with my son.(我家快6岁的儿子现在特别痴迷《星球大战》和《哈利・波特》。我知道他年纪还小,但这些电影和书籍总能引出需要我们一起梳理的话题 —— 而且都是些不轻松的话题。不过对我来说,这反而是个好机会!我们一起读原著,一起看电影。我们聊过很多事,有些家长可能不会跟5岁的孩子聊这些,但我就想和儿子进行这样的对话。)”可知,作者将儿子对《星球大战》和《哈利・波特》的兴趣当作与他深入交谈的机会。故选D项。
【42题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段作者说“Wow, that Darth Vader really makes me sick. (哇,达斯・维达真让我反感。)”,随后儿子回应“Mama, Darth Vader has good in him. I know he’s on the dark side, but he isn’t all bad. (妈妈,达斯・维达内心是有善良的。我知道他站在黑暗面,但他不全是坏的。)”可知,儿子是在反驳作者的观点,即“批评”作者对达斯・维达的全盘否定,所以猜测chided表“批评”的意思。故选C项。
【43题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Little ears were listening in on all of those instances and after doing my best to be nice on the phone call with the nurse (小耳朵们在听着所有这些事情,所以我在和护士打电话时尽量表现得友好)”可知,“小耳朵”指的是儿子,作者担心自己的负面态度会对孩子产生不良影响,因此尽量对护士友善。
根据第二段儿子认为达斯・维达“不全是坏的”,以及第三段儿子说“Mama, we all have a bad day. Be nice to her and she might be nice to you back. (妈妈,我们都会有不顺心的日子。对她好一点,她或许也会对你好。)”可知,儿子能站在他人角度思考,体谅他人处境,体现出“体贴的”特质。故选B项。
【45题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段儿子提到“善良存在于每个人身上”、第三段儿子建议“对他人友善”、最后一段作者总结“I’m going to try to smile when met with a frown. Like he mentions, even Darth Vader has good in him and maybe he just needs a little sympathy. (遇到别人皱眉时,我会努力微笑。就像他说的,即使是达斯・维达也有善良的一面,或许他只是需要一点理解。)”可知,文章核心是通过儿子的启发,鼓励人们发现他人身上的善良并友善对待他人。故选A项。

51. B 52. D 53. C 54. A 55. A

56. Why did Dr. Pittinger appear “noticeably uncomfortable, almost sad”? (no more than 10 words)
___________________________________________________________________________________
57. What does the underlined sentence mean in Paragraph 3? (no more than 8 words)
___________________________________________________________________________________
58. What did the author do to try to heal his backbone? (no more than10 words)
___________________________________________________________________________________
59. How did the author transform his setback into success? (no more than10 words)
___________________________________________________________________________________
60. How does the story of the author inspire you? Please state in your own words. (no more than 20 words)
___________________________________________________________________________________
56. Because he had to tell the author the bad news.
57. The author soon accepted the fact.
58. He exercised and wore the support.
59. He became a football coach instead of a player
60. When facing setbacks, accept the reality and seek new chances.

根据第二段“He told me that I would never be able to play football again.(他告诉我我再也不能踢足球了。)” Because he had to tell the author the bad news.
根据上文“I had waited for three months to find out whether I could play football again, but the thought of waiting another five minutes seemed impossible. Then Dr. Pittinger entered. He was friendly, but noticeably uncomfortable, almost sad. He told me that I would never be able to play football again.(我等了三个月才知道我是否还能再踢足球,但再等五分钟的想法似乎是不可能的。然后皮廷格医生走了进来。他很友好,但明显不舒服,几乎很悲伤。他告诉我,我再也不能踢足球了。)”以及“The realization sank in immediately.(这个认识立刻被接受了。)” The author soon accepted the fact.
根据第三段“Though I was ashamed to wear the support, I wore it devotedly, with some false hope that the more I wore it, the quicker and better it would heal the backbone.(尽管我羞于佩戴支具,但我还是虔诚地佩戴着,抱着一些不切实际的希望,认为我佩戴得越多,脊柱愈合得就越快越好。)”以及“I worked out from five to six every morning.(我每天早上五点到六点锻炼。)” He exercised and wore the support.
根据最后一段“Rather than stick to the undeniably unattainable, I understood that though this particular option was no more open to me, I had countless others to make in its place.(与其坚持不可否认的无法实现的事情,我明白虽然这个特定的选择对我来说不再可行,但我还有无数其他的选择。)”以及“And by the way, I’m a five-star football coach now.(顺便说一下,我现在是一名五星级足球教练。)” He became a football coach instead of a player.
When facing setbacks, accept the reality and seek new chances.

61. When I look back on my high school life, the most important advice I’d give is these wonderful words from a writer.
____________________________________________________________________________
Looking back on my high school life, the most important advice I’d give is these wonderful words from a writer.
When I look back on my high school life是when引导的时间状语从句,可以转换成非谓语动词结构作时间状语,去掉When和I,将谓语动词look back on变成现在分词结构looking back on,它是主句中的主语I发出的动作,表示主动含义,look放在句首时首字母l要大写,其余内容不变。故填Looking back on my high school life, the most important advice I’d give is these wonderful words from a writer.
62. These terraces mean a lot to the local people. Traditions hold much value for the local people.
____________________________________________________________________________
These terraces mean a lot to the local people, for whom traditions hold much value.
These terraces mean a lot to the local people, for whom traditions hold much value.
63. She should have said nothing about it. It is amazing.(改为It做形式主语的主语从句)
_____________________________________________________________________________________________
