In July, 2019, Shanghai entered a new period of garbage sorting. Over 24 million people in Shanghai face a daily test.
Waste is required to be sorted into four kinds: kitchen waste, other waste, recyclable waste and hazardous (有害的) waste. People who can’t sort garbage can be fined (罚款) up to 200 yuan, and businesses can be fined up to 50,000 yuan.
However, people often find it confusing (令人迷惑的) when sorting different types of waste.
“I often get confused. For example, I did not know at first whether the cat waste was kitchen waste or other waste,” said Cheng Sijing, a 27-year-old cat owner in Shanghai.
So many people bought garbage sorting toys on Taobao to learn about garbage sorting information. One toy has four sorting boxes with cards representing (代表) different kinds of garbage. People should sort the garbage in the correct sorting boxes.
Some even played a VR game to learn garbage sorting information. It’s useful to play the VR game. “It is easy to understand. People can practice garbage sorting without actually going through the rubbish, and it is also a more useful way than paper materials when training garbage sorting volunteers,” said Wu Xia, the CEO of VitrellaCore, the company that created the game.
The garbage sorting is a long journey as it takes time for people to learn and form a habit. More cities are on their way. By 2025, most Chinese cities will complete the building of garbage sorting, according to an official circular (官方通告) last month.
