But you will probably love it. I know I did. You should join some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck! Sharon, Aged 22 The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself. Besides, I don’t know what your middle school was like, but high school teachers will not care about things such as how much homework you already have in one night. It’s best to learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need to do. Eddie, Aged 20 When I started high school, I was really nervous too, especially since I had been homeschooled (家中教学) all through middle school and didn’t really know anyone. I suppose the best advice would be to just relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier before you know it. David, Aged 19 I’m not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening. But you’ll get used to it. Don’t be afraid of anyone; upperclassmen (高年级学生) will pick on you more if you let them know you’re afraid. Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week it’s really not bad at all. Don’t worry. 21. What can we infer (推断) from Sharon about high school? A. Teachers are quite strict. B. Students often stay up at night. C. Teachers provide much care for students. D. Students should make good use of their time. 22. How did Eddie feel on his first day of high school? A. Bored. B. Excited. C. Worried. D. Relaxed. 23. Who mentions the importance of friends? A. Frank. B. Eddie. C. Sharon. D. David. B These 4 people are studying English. However, they are now facing some problems. ◎I am Pablo. I work 50 hours a week as a taxi driver, so I talk to people all day. They understand me, but I know I make a lot of mistakes. No one corrects me. My vocabulary is strong. Grammar is my problem. I’m trying to change little by little. For example, I don’t use the past tense (时态). I always say, “I drive him to the office this morning” instead of “I drove him to the office this morning”. ◎My name is Maria Luisa. I’m teaching myself English, and I’m good at grammar. However, it’s really difficult to find ways to practice English. I live in an area where everyone speaks my language. My neighbors and friends speak Spanish. I can speak Spanish in the supermarket and at the post office. ◎I am Li Ping. I understand the grammar and the readings in my class and I think my writing is good, but I’m very nervous when I speak English. I don’t want to make any mistakes because I’m afraid people will think that I’m stupid. Also, my pronunciation isn’t good. When I speak, people often say, “What? Say that again”. ◎I am Yoshi. I have been in the United States for one year. I’m studying hard and I know grammar well, but the vocabulary is very difficult. When I listen, I don’t understand many of the words. When I try to read, there are three or four new words in every sentence. I feel discouraged. 24. Who may say, “I go to bed late last night”? A. Pablo. B. Maria Luisa C. Li Ping. D. Yoshi. 25. What would be the best advice for Maria Luisa? A. Try to have a wide vocabulary. B. Develop a good knowledge of grammar. C. Read as many English books as possible. D. Make friends with English-speaking people. 26. Why do people find it hard to understand Li Ping’s English? A She can’t pronounce words in English correctly. B. She speaks at a very fast speed. C. Her grammar is terrible. D. Her voice is very low. 27. What can we learn about Yoshi? A. He was born in the United States. B. He has a very small vocabulary . C. He has learned English for years. D. He is very good at listening. C When you throw cats and dogs in a scene where they are falling from the sky, it might be hard for an English learner to know exactly what it means. So English learners should know the meaning of English idioms (习语). It’s important to not only teach the meaning of idioms, but also teach how to use them correctly and effectively (有效地). When a non-native speaker uses an idiom correctly, he or she will sound very fluent. But on the other hand, if they use the phrase wrongly, they will sound the exact opposite. Learning idioms is appropriate for intermediate to advanced (中到高级的) students. If you teach an idiom lesson to beginners or low-intermediate learners, they are very likely to use it wrongly. So how should teachers teach English idioms correctly? Provide idioms in context so students can fully understand the meaning. Be sure to provide a conversation around it as an example. Watching videos of native speakers talking is a great way to show your students how idioms are used in the real world. FluentU is a great resource that can help you highlight the usage and context of various idioms used. FluentU takes real-world videos — like music videos, news and inspiring (鼓舞人心的) talks — and turns them into personalized language learning lessons. Teach idioms in spoken form, not written, and explain to students how they are conversational, rather than formal. Have students practice the idioms in dialogue to help them understand how they’re used in spoken English. Don’t just hand out a long list of idioms. Be sure to provide a small selection of 5-10 idioms and explain each one. If you provide too many examples it’ll simply turn into an introduction of what an idiom is, rather than how to actually remember the meaning and use one effectively in dialogue. 28. Why does the author give the example in Paragraph 1? A. To explain why English is difficult to learn. B. To show English idioms are quite interesting. C. To show idioms can be difficult to understand. D. To tell us the meaning of an English idiom. 29. What does the author consider important to a non-native speaker? A. Using English idioms correctly in conversation. B. Finding the meaning of idioms themselves. C. Sounding fluent by avoiding English idioms. D. Learning English idioms as low-intermediate learners. 30. What do we know about FluentU? A. It has the latest music videos and movies. B. It is appropriate for low-intermediate learners. C. It provides various resource books for teachers. D. It provides real-world videos on the usage of idioms. 31. What does the text mainly talk about? A. How to teach English in a fun way. B. How to learn English idioms by yourself. C. How to teach English idioms correctly. D. How to use English idioms in dialogue. D Language is so deeply embedded in almost every aspect of the way we interact with the world that it’s hard to imagine what it would be like not to have it. What would be the consequence if we didn’t have names for things or didn’t have experience talking about things that hadn’t actually happened? Would we be able to think? What would our thoughts be like? The answer to the question of whether thought is possible without language depends on what you mean by “thought”. Can you experience impressions and feelings without language? Yes, and very few would argue otherwise. But there is a difference between being able to experience “pain” and possessing the concept “pain”. Most would say true thought involves having the concept. Many artists and scientists, in describing their own inner processes while they work, say they do not use words to solve problems, but images. The autistic (患自闭症的) author Temple Grandin, in explaining how she thinks visually rather than linguistically, says that concepts for her are collections of images. Of course, Grandin has language, and knows how to use it, so it is hard to say how much of her thinking has been influenced by it, but it’s not unimaginable — and probably likely — that there are people who are deficient in the ability to use language and think in the way she describes. There is evidence that deaf people cut off from language possess the ability to think before being exposed to language. Also, the sign languages developed by deaf students without language models display the kind of thinking that goes far beyond mere sensory impression or practical problem solving. However, while it appears that we can indeed think without language, there are certain kinds of thinking that are made possible by language. Language gives us symbols we can use to fix ideas, reflect on them, and hold them up for observation. It allows for a level of abstract reasoning we wouldn’t have otherwise. The philosopher Peter Carruthers has argued that there is a type of inner, explicitly linguistic thinking that allows us to bring our own thoughts into conscious awareness. We may be able to think without language, but language lets us know we are thinking. 32. What does the author intend to show with the experience of Temple Grandin? A. People without language can’t think. B. Language has no influence on thinking. C. Some people may think in a non-linguistic way. D. Autistic people have a special way of using language. 33. Which of the following best explains “deficient” underlined in paragraph 4? A. Flexible. B. Lacking. C. Confident. D. Experienced. 34. What could we learn from the last paragraph? A Language facilitates abstract reasoning. B. Language is merely useful for reflection. C. Language is a must for people to perceive the world. D. Language restricts people’s ability to think visually. 35. What is the writing purpose of the text? A. To stress the importance of language in daily life. B. To advocate the thinking modes of scientists and artists. C. To demonstrate the cognitive abilities of average individuals. D. To show the relationship between thought and language. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Everyone wants to perform well at school. D. (我刚上高中的时候也非常紧张,尤其是因为我整个初中都是在家接受教育的,而且实际上谁都不认识。)”可知,Eddie在上高中的第一天感到很紧张、担心。故选C项。 【23题详解】 细节理解题。根据David, Aged 19部分中“Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. (交一些朋友并和他们待在一起,会极大地帮助你快速适应高中生活。)”可知,David提到了朋友的重要性,即朋友能帮助快速适应高中生活。故选D项。 B These 4 people are studying English. A. She can’t pronounce words in English correctly. B. She speaks at a very fast speed. C. Her grammar is terrible. D. Her voice is very low. 27. What can we learn about Yoshi? A. He was born in the United States. B. He has a very small vocabulary . C. He has learned English for years. D. He is very good at listening. 【答案】24. A 25. D 26. A 27. B 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇应用文。主要描述了四个不同的人在学习英语时面临的特定问题。 【24题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段“For example, I don’t use the past tense (时态). I always say, “I drive him to the office this morning” instead of “I drove him to the office this morning”.(例如,我不使用过去时。我总是说,“I drive him to the office this morning”,而不是“I drove him to the office this morning”)”可知,Pablo不使用过去时,由此可推知,没有使用过去时的这句话I go to bed late last night可能是Pablo说的。故选A。 【25题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“However, it’s really difficult to find ways to practice English. I live in an area where everyone speaks my language. My neighbors and friends speak Spanish. I can speak Spanish in the supermarket and at the post office.(然而,真的很难找到练习英语的方法。我住在一个每个人都说我的语言的地区。我的邻居和朋友说西班牙语。我可以在超市和邮局说西班牙语)”可知,Maria Luisa处于一个身边人都在说西班牙语的环境中,没有说英语的环境,由此可推知,对于Maria Luisa而言,最好的建议是与说英语的人交朋友。故选D。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“Also, my pronunciation isn’t good. When I speak, people often say, “What? Say that again”.(另外,我的发音也不好。当我说话时,人们经常说,“什么?再说一遍”)”可知,人们觉得很难理解李萍的英语,是因为李萍的发音不好,不能正确地发音英语单词。故选A。 【27题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段“I’m studying hard and I know grammar well, but the vocabulary is very difficult. When I listen, I don’t understand many of the words. When I try to read, there are three or four new words in every sentence.(我学习很努力,语法也很好,但词汇很难。当我听的时候,我听不懂很多单词。当我试着阅读时,每个句子中都有三四个新单词)”可知,Yoshi感觉词汇很难,会听不懂很多单词,阅读时会发现每个句子中都有三四个新单词,由此可知,Yoshi的词汇量很小。故选B。 C When you throw cats and dogs in a scene where they are falling from the sky, it might be hard for an English learner to know exactly what it means. Provide idioms in context, so students can fully understand the meaning. If you provide too many examples, it’ll simply turn into an introduction of what an idiom is, rather than how to actually remember the meaning and use one effectively in dialogue. 【答案】28. C 29. A 30. D 31. C 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章就怎样教学生英语习语而给老师一些建议。 【28题详解】 推理判断题。由文章第一段“When you throw cats and dogs in a scene where they are falling from the sky, it might be hard for an English learner to know exactly what it means. So English learners should know the meaning of English idioms (习语).(当你把猫和狗扔到一个从天上掉下来的场景中时,英语学习者可能很难确切地知道这意味着什么。所以英语学习者应该了解英语习语的含义。)”以及后文可知,作者在第一段中举例是为了说明英语习语可能难以理解。故选C项。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。由文章第二段“It’s important to not only teach the meaning of idioms, but also teach how to use them correctly and effectively (有效地). When a non-native speaker uses an idiom correctly, he or she will sound very fluent. But on the other hand, if they use the phrase wrongly, they will sound the exact opposite.. (重要的是不仅要教成语的含义,还要教如何正确有效地使用成语。当一个非母语人士正确使用一个成语时,他或她听起来会非常流利。但另一方面,如果他们用错了这个短语,听起来就会完全相反。)”可知,作者认为在谈话中正确使用英语习语对非母语人士来说很重要。故选A项。 【30题详解】 细节理解题。由文章第五段“FluentU is a great resource that can help you highlight the usage and context of various idioms used. FluentU takes real-world videos — like music videos, news and inspiring (鼓舞人心的) talks — and turns them into personalized language learning lessons.(FluentU是一个很好的资源,可以帮助您突出显示所使用的各种习语的用法和上下文。FluentU将真实世界的视频——如音乐视频、新闻和鼓舞人心的演讲——转化为个性化的语言学习课程。)”可知,FluentU提供了有关习语用法的真实视频。故选D项。 【31题详解】 主旨大意题。由文章第一段“When you throw cats and dogs in a scene where they are falling from the sky, it might be hard for an English learner to know exactly what it means. So English learners should know the meaning of English idioms (习语).(当你把猫和狗扔到天上掉下来的场景中时,英语学习者可能很难确切地知道这意味着什么。所以英语学习者应该了解英语习语的含义。)”以及后文可知,文章就怎样教学生英语习语而给老师一些建议。所以C项How to teach English idioms correctly.(如何正确教授英语习语。)符合题意。故选C项。 D Language is so deeply embedded in almost every aspect of the way we interact with the world that it’s hard to imagine what it would be like not to have it. A. Language facilitates abstract reasoning. B. Language is merely useful for reflection. C. Language is a must for people to perceive the world. D Language restricts people’s ability to think visually. 35. What is the writing purpose of the text? A. To stress the importance of language in daily life. B. To advocate the thinking modes of scientists and artists. C. To demonstrate the cognitive abilities of average individuals. D. To show the relationship between thought and language. 【答案】32. C 33. B 34. A 35. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇议论文。本文探讨了语言和思维之间的关系,指出虽然语言不是思维的必要条件,但它极大地促进了抽象思维和自我意识的发展。 32题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“The autistic author Temple Grandin, in explaining how she thinks visually rather than linguistically, says that concepts for her are collections of images.(自闭症作家Temple Grandin在解释她如何以视觉而非语言的方式思考时,她说对她来说概念是图像的集合。)”可知,作者提到Temple Grandin是为了表明有些人可能以非语言的方式思考。故选C项。 【33题详解】 词义猜测题。根据第四段“Of course, Grandin has language, and knows how to use it, so it is hard to say how much of her thinking has been influenced by it, but it’s not unimaginable (当然,格兰丁有语言,也知道如何使用语言,所以很难说她的思想有多少受到了语言的影响,但这并非不可想象)”以及“to use language and think in the way she describes (像她描述的那样使用语言和思考的能力。)”可知,格兰丁有语言能力,有思考能力,而文章本身探讨的是,没有语言能力是否能思考,因此这里讨论的是缺乏语言能力的人,以此形成对照,由此推断划线单词的含义是“缺乏”。故选B项。 【34题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Language gives us symbols we can use to fix ideas, reflect on them, and hold them up for observation. It allows for a level of abstract reasoning we wouldn’t have otherwise. (语言给我们提供了符号,我们可以用它来固定思想,反思思想,并把它们举起来观察。它允许我们进行一定程度的抽象推理。)”可知,语言使得人们可以进行抽象推理。故选A。 【35题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“Language is so deeply embedded in almost every aspect of the way we interact with the world that it’s hard to imagine what it would be like not to have it. What would be the consequence if we didn’t have names for things or didn’t have experience talking about things that hadn’t actually happened? Would we be able to think? What would our thoughts be like? Everyone wants to perform well at school.
