Passage B
Have you heard about Black Myth: Wukong? As soon as the game came out, it led a new interest in the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West around the world.
The writer of the novel is Wu Cheng’en, who is believed to create it in the 16th century based on older stories and history. The novel is mainly about a Buddhist monk named Xuanzang, who takes his disciple (徒弟), including Sun Wukong the “Monkey King,” on a journey to find sutras (真经). For centuries, the novel has not only been made into films and TV shows, but also gave rise to a number of common sayings.
Eyes of fire and gold
In one of chapters, Wukong is locked up in a fire store as punishment after causing a mess in the Heaven. He runs into a room where the fire cannot reach. However, the smoke leaves him with an eye condition called “Fiery Eye”. Wukong’s fiery eyes allow him to see things hidden from ordinary humans, such as monsters who change shapes or become unseen. Nowadays, this phrase generally refers to someone’s ability to discover crime or cheating. For example: His lies seemed perfect. but she still saw through them with her “eyes of fire and gold”.
Transform with a shake of the body
“Transforming with a shaking the body” refers a kind of shapeshifting that doesn’t take much effort. The Monkey King learns “Seventy-Two Changes” from Puti Zushi. In the novel, he transforms into a bird, a tree or a temple according to different situations. Today, the phrase is often used to express a great change of situation. For example: With strong support from fairies (精灵), Cinderella transformed into the most beautiful girl at the party.
Shentong
Shentong refers to a set of powers. Wukong is the one who has strong powers: a jump with his jindouyun, a magical cloud he rides as a means of transport. What’s more, he has a magic stick with which he beats bad spirits. So this phrase describes a person who has strong powers.
1.Why does the writer ask the question in the first paragraph?
A.To get readers interested. B.To ask readers to answer it.
C.To ask readers to talk about the game. D.To get readers to read Journey to the West.
2.What does the saying “transform with a shake of the body” probably mean in Chinese?
3.What may the writer do next at the end of the last paragraph?
A.List numbers. B.Ask a question. C.Compare facts. D.Give an example.
4.Which of the following best shows the structure of the text?
A. B.

A horse fair was an interesting place. Many people went there to sell horses. You could see many kinds of young and strong horses. There were also poor and thin horses and they were worn out because of hard work.
One day, the seller took me there. He wanted to sell me at a high price. I didn’t know if I would be lucky enough to meet a master who would treat me well.
Then a man with a gentle voice came to us. He wanted to buy me at a low price, but the seller refused.

“I’ll give twenty-four pounds. Can you sell the horse to me?” he said.
“OK! Take it,” said the seller. “He’s a quality one and if you want him for work, he’s a good choice.”
Half an hour later, we left for the new home, along country roads, until we came to the city. My new home was in a narrow street. On one side of the street, there were some small, old houses. On the other, there were some stables (马厩).
We stopped in front of a house. My new master whistled (吹口哨). The door opened. A young woman, a little girl and a boy, came out. They all looked at me.
“Is he gentle, Father?” the girl asked.
“Yes, Dolly, as gentle as a cat. You can touch him.”

Passage B
(2025·江苏扬州·中考真题)Inside the hall, the door was shut, and the key lay on the glass stand. Poor Alice, who was about one foot high after taking some drink, found a cake on the floor. She went up and soon ate all the cake.
“How strange! How tall I am!” said Alice. She looked down at her feet—they seemed so far off. In fact, she was now over nine feet high, which meant she still couldn’t get through the door. She sat down, and had a good cry till there was a large pool all round her.
Suddenly, she heard the sound of feet not far off. It was the Rabbit that had come back, with a fan in his hand. Alice felt so in need of help from someone, that when he came near, she called out, “If you please, sir....” The Rabbit started as if shot, dropped the fan and ran off as fast as possible.
Alice picked up the fan and as the hall was hot, she fanned herself. “Dear, dear! How strange all things are today! I do wish to get out of the hall! ” she said.
Then she noticed herself in the glass—she was now not more than two feet high, and still shrinking quite fast. That was the fan! She realized this and dropped it at once, or she would shrink to the size of an ant soon.
Alice was in a sad fear at the quick change. “Things are worse,” said the poor girl, “I was never so small as this. How can I get out?” As she said these words, she lost her footsteps and was up to her chin (下巴) in salt water—her own tears.
Just then Alice noticed a mouse swimming towards her.
“Will it be useful now to speak to this mouse? All things are so strange here. I should think maybe it can talk. At least there’s no harm to try.” So she swam up.

Passage B
In 1674, I was born on my father’s small farm in Nottinghamshire, England. I was the third of five sons. My childhood was very happy. I liked going to school and learning new things. ▲
One day, Father asked, “Lemuel, have you thought about your future? I think you would be a good doctor.”
I wanted to please him, so I said, “Yes, Father. I’ll go to Cambridge University and study medicine.” But as I spoke, I was thinking, “At university, I can also learn things that will be useful to a sailor.”
After several years of study, I became a doctor. Not long after, I asked my sweetheart, Mary, to marry me. Before long, we had children, a boy and a girl. They gave us great joy. I enjoyed being a doctor for the first few years. But then I became bored, and ideas of travel filled my mind. I imagined going to far-off places and seeing wonderful new things.
“Mary,” I said one day, “I need more adventures in my life. The captain of a ship about to sail has offered me a job as the ship’s doctor. I don’t know how long the journey will take, but I promise I will return. And when I do, I’ll tell you and the children all about my adventures.”
So in 1699, I set sail on the Antelope from Bristol. That city is a large and very old port in the southwest of England. The captain was a good man and had sailed a great deal!
“Welcome aboard. Doctor Gulliver,” he said, “First we’ll be sailing down the Atlantic Ocean and around the coast of Africa. Then we’ll sail through the Indian Ocean to the South Seas.” Our journey went well until one morning, somewhere near Tasmania in the South Pacific Ocean.
“I don’t like the look of those clouds,” the captain said, “I think a storm is coming.”
Within an hour, a big storm began. The sea rose in great, angry waves much taller than the Antelope. The wind, now as strong as a hurricane, made a terrible sound.
“The wind is blowing the ship off course!” shouted the captain. “Look out!”
Suddenly, with a loud crack, the Antelope hit some rocks and broke in half. The sailors fell into the sea. Many of them could not swim. The ship sank quickly, and I suppose everyone but me drowned.

Passage C(2025·
As the spirit spoke, they passed through the wall and stood on a country road with fields on either side. The city had disappeared. It was now day time, and there was snow on the ground.
“I know where we are!” Scrooge shouted. “I was born here and lived here as a boy.” He began to have memories of his childhood. A tear (眼泪) came into his eye.
“If you remember this place,” the spirit said, “you may now lead the way.”
They walked along the road until a little town could be seen ahead with its bridge, church, and river. Some small horses came towards them with boys upon their backs. When the boys came nearer, Scrooge recognized each of them and could call out their names. He felt so happy to see them all again. All these boys shouted to each other until the fields were full of their laughter.
“We are now at the school,” said the spirit. “Only one child is there, left alone by the others.” Hearing what he said, Scrooge burst into tears.
They walked through the school house until they came to a room that was empty except for a small boy sitting at a desk, reading. The room seemed very old and needed to be repaired. The spirit pointed to the boy. Scrooge looked at the boy, sat down and couldn’t help crying. It was Scrooge when he was young.
Suddenly, a man wearing strange clothes stood outside the window. He was leading a horse. “It’s Ali Baba!” Scrooge shouted excitedly. “It’s dear, old, honest Ali Baba! Yes, yes, I remember.”
Scrooge remembered how lonely he had been as a child. “Poor boy!” he said, and tears came into his eyes again. “I wish,” he said, putting his hands in his pocket and looking around him after drying his eyes, “but it’s too late now.”

Passage D
This year the US will honour(纪念) one of the country’s most famous writers―Mark Twain (1835-1910). Most readers know that his real name was Sammel Longhorne Clemens, but how many know where the pen name “Mark Twain” came from?
The answer shows Clemen’s colourful early life before he became a writer. “Mark Twain” was the cry shouted on a ship when the ship entered a part of a river that was two fathoms (6 feet) deep. “Twain” is an old-fashion way of saying “two”. Twain trained as a ship pilot on the Mississippi river for two years, a time that he wrote about in humorous Life on the Mississippi(1883). The famous river was an important theme in many of his works.
With little education, he had to teach himself how to write stories. Whenever possible, he would go to public libraries. There he spent much time reading and thinking, which greatly helped him with his writing.
On the other hand, his life experiences gave him wonderful material to write about and attract readers. Twain wrote in a style that has been called”local colour” because it shows great knowledge of local people and their customs.
Thisgiftis very clear in the two books for which Twain is still celebrated today. The Adventure of Tom Sawyer(1876) and its follow-up(后来的)The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Which many people call “The Great American Novel”.
The most amazing invention in the book is the voice of Huck himself. Hunk did not enjoy schooling. It shows in the way he uses language, in a spoken style. Only a master like Twain could copy the way a young southern boy talked so well.
1.Who will the American will honour this year?
A.A famous musician called Tom Sawyer.
B.A talent dancer from Mississipi.
C.A wonderful novelThe Adventure of Tom Sawyer.
D.Sammel Clemens, a well-known writer.
2.Why is the Mississippi so important in Mark Twain’s works?
A.Because Twain’s hometown is near the river.
B.Because Mark Twain once worked on the river in his early life.
C.Because Mark Twain is interested in rivers.
D.Because Tom and Hunk are Twain’s friends.
3.What does the underlined word “gift” mean in the passage?
A.Twain’s talent for self-teaching.
B.Twain’s “local colour” writing style.
C.Twain’s good sense of humour
D.Twain’s experiences as a ship pilot.
4.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.Mark twain graduated form a famous university.
B.Tom Sawyer was once a ship pilot.
C.Mark twain is a master of American literature.
D.Huck had much schooling and used language in a spoken style.

A.List numbers. B.Ask a question. C.Compare facts. D.Give an example.

Shortly after, a tall man with a very loud voice came. He walked around me and I was afraid he would buy me. Luckily, he walked away.
After a few minutes, the man with a gentle voice came back. I was very happy to see him again.
She touched my shoulder, whispering sweetly, “Welcome, my new friend.”

根据“She went up and soon ate all the cake”可知,爱丽丝把蛋糕吃光了,即a;根据“She sat down, and had a good cry till there was a large pool all round her.”可知,爱丽丝坐下来,大哭了一场,直到她周围成了一个大水潭,即d;根据“The Rabbit started as if shot, dropped the fan and ran off as fast as possible.”可知,兔子吓了一跳,扔掉扇子,以最快的速度跑开了,即b;根据“she was now not more than two feet high”可知,爱丽丝身高不足两英尺,即c;根据“she lost her footsteps and was up to her chin in salt water”可知,水几乎淹没爱丽丝,即e。 故选A。
根据“How strange all things are today! I do wish to get out of the hall!”
根据“she was now not more than two feet high, and still shrinking quite fast”及后文“or she would shrink to the size of an ant”可知,shrinking应表示“变小”。故选D。
根据“Alice felt so in need of help from someone, that when he came near, she called out...”可知,爱丽丝尝试与兔子对话;根据“She realized this and dropped it at once, or she would shrink to the size of an ant soon.”可知,爱丽丝扔掉扇子阻止继续缩小;根据“I should think maybe it can talk. At least there’s no harm to try”可知,爱丽丝试图与老鼠交流。
Alice felt so in need of help from someone, that when he came near, she called out, “If you please, sir....”
分析:本句是so...that... Alice felt so in need of help from someone,是主系表结构;that后面引导结果状语从句,在这个结果状语从句中,when he came near是时间状语从句,she called out是主句,“If you please, sir....”

“What do you wish?” asked the spirit.
