四、任务型阅读
As teachers, we often love to encourage our students to try new things at a young age. However, I think this is a huge mistake—learning new things at any age is important and it can help us become better.
Take myself as an example, I didn’t start playing ice hockey until 40. My wife was a huge sports fan, and usually I was asked to watch games between the big teams. I fell in love with the sport, and after a few months, I made up my mind to give it a try.
To be honest, it is the hardest sport I’ve ever played. There was so much to learn and I was so terrible at skating, but I always kept on going. So I took some skating training courses. Then I joined a hockey team and practised hard in my free time. I finally made it, though it took me a really long time.
Learning hockey has also helped me be a better teacher in some way. Being bad at hockey helps me to understand those students in my class who have difficulty learning English. I’m not stupid. It just takes me longer to learn and practise a skill before I’m able to do it.
It’s good to learn new things whether they come with more difficulty or not and ________.

Read the passage and answer the questions. (阅读短文回答下列问题)
My friend Tristan is a hurdler (跨栏运动员) on a track-and-field team (田径队). I love to watch him run and jump over the hurdles. In these races, the hurdles are there to slow down the runners.
We all face hurdles in our lives. They slow us down as we run toward a goal. Some hurdles are low and can be easily jumped over. Others are much higher and a lot more difficult. They are big problems. To move forward, we need to break them down.
I thought about this as I read the story of Congressman (国会议员) John Lewis. He faced many hurdles because of his skin color. In 1956, when he was 16, he wanted a library card but was not allowed to have one. At that time, in some places in the U.S., only white people could use libraries. Experiences like that one made Lewis decide to break down the unfair hurdles for black people. He spent his life working towards this goal, not just for himself, but for people all across the country.
Although Lewis couldn’t get into a library as a young man, he later became the subject (主题) of many books on library shelves. He also wrote his own books. Lewis passed away in 2020, but his story lives on. It continues to make us believe that we can make the world fairer.
Have you had a hurdle in your life? How did you get over it or break it down? Share your story with other readers of Highlights by writing to me at Christine@Highlights.com!

2.What made the writer start learning ice hockey at the age of 40?

5.How does ice hockey help the writer to be a better teacher?

Christine
