As the saying goes, “A clean room is a happy room.” However, keeping your home clean and tidy is not easy, and it can take a lot of energy. There are many English words and expressions (表达) about housework, and here are some of them.
If you’re a “neat freak”, you can’t stand it when things are dirty or messy (凌乱的). Maybe you don’t like “slobs”, either. “Slobs” are people who are lazy and hardly clean up the rooms.

2.What does the underlined expression “spick and span” in Paragraph 3 mean?

B.“Spick and span” has a history of 100 years.
C.The idea of decluttering is not welcome now.
D.People first used “spick and span” to describe houses.

A teacher in this college says the students from different countries can understand each other better through learning languages and sharing cultures.
A Russian student Lukin says the college is close to his country. For him, the lessons are interesting, and Chinese students are very friendly. He thinks the study experience will be very helpful for his future life and job. He wants to be a trader in China.

I’m a Grade 9 student. I’m not good at English, especially speaking and grammar. I’m too shy to talk in class and always forget new words. Can anyone share good ways to improve English? Thanks!

A.She doesn’t have time to study.
B.She can’t remember grammar rules.

A.Watching English movies. B.Making flashcards.
C.Writing emails to pen pals. D.Asking teachers for help.
People often ask me for suggestions about how to learn English. As for it, everyone is different. I’ll share some of my experience. I once took a school-year English course in Wuhan University, but I mostly learned English on my own.
One thing I can tell you is that once you’ve started learning, you should try to think in English as much as you can. If you see something when you’re riding your bike or walking down the street, just think about “How would I say it in English?” At first, it might be with simple words or phrases, but later you should think about longer phrases and sentences. Now I’m in America, and for most of the time, I would think in English and speak it directly. It’s amazing how much this helps.
For several years after I started learning, I was often afraid of talking with others in English because I didn’t want to make mistakes. Finally I got over it. And while traveling in America, I’d try to hang out with friends who couldn’t speak Chinese, so that I’d have no choice but to speak English. And I also decided that if I said something stupid and other people laughed at me, then so be it. After that, my English started improving much more quickly.
Besides, it may be a good idea to ask your American friends to look at the way you’re writing, and give you some suggestions for improvement.
1.According to the writer, ________ is a good way to improve your English.
A.thinking in English B.learning English grammar
C.watching English films D.reading English books
2.To the writer’s surprise, his English improved quickly ________.
A.in the university B.in the middle school
C.in China D.in America
3.The best title for this passage should be “________”.
A.The importance of English B.My English learning experience
C.My university life D.My American friends
Every English learner needs to know how to ask for something in English. There are a number of ways to do this. If you know someone has something, you can ask for it with a polite question. If you don’t know, it’s possible to ask for something with a yes or no question. Be careful not to use direct expressions. In other words, don’t say “Give me that”, but ask kindly as the following examples, “Do you have a pen I could borrow?” “Is there any tea?” “Did you buy any bread?”
If you know or see someone has something, ask a polite question with “could”, “may” or “might”. It’s also possible to use “can” in some special situations. In the past, “can” was not used when asking for something, but meant ability. In the UK, people mainly use “Can you lend me…?” or “Can I have…?” In the USA, this is still considered to be wrong, and “May I have…?” is preferred.
It’s common to use “Could you lend/ hand/give ...?” “May/Can I borrow...?” “May I have...?” Do not begin a sentence with “please”, but you can add “please” at the end of the sentence to be polite.
1.What can we ask if we know someone has something?
A.A direct question. B.A polite question. C.A no question. D.A yes question.
2.What can we say politely if we want some water?
A.Is there any water? B.Pass me some water.
C.Give me some water. D.Take some water to me.
3.Which of the following did people use when they wanted something politely in the past?
①Might I use your knife? ②May I try your bike now?
③Can I use your computer? ④Could you lend me your eraser?
A.①②③ B.①②④ C.②③④ D.①③④
4.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.How to describe our ideas. B.What to do when we are polite.
C.How to express or ask politely. D.What to do with our language problems.
When we are little kids, our parents teach us to say “please”, “thank you”, “excuse me”, and “sorry”. Our parents know politeness is important for our growth. So we should learn politeness early.
For an English learner, it’s also a good idea to learn polite language expressions. Here are two pieces of advice, and we’ll give you some ________ to better understand them.
1. Use modal verbsWhen we use modal verbs, like would, could or may, we can turn a direct (直接的) question into a polite request.
→ Could you please give me the salt?
→ Could you please tell me where the supermarket is?
2. Change the grammar
This way may be unusual but it’s true. To be more polite, speakers often change the tense (时态). In English, the simple present tense sounds too direct, so speakers change the present tense into the past tense.
→ I wondered if you had time.
These pieces of advice are about polite language. Being polite in how we act is also important because it can make others feel respected and improve our relationships with others. Learn more with EF English E-Magazine after paying (付款).
1.Which word can we put in the “______”?
A.Examples. B.Questions. C.Reasons.
2.Which one is a polite language expression according to the passage?
A.Give me the salt, John.
B.I hoped you could give me a hand.
C.Do you want to go to the movies or not?
3.What grammar change is emphasized (被强调) for politeness according to the passage?
A.Change the order of the adjective in a sentence.
B.Adding modal verbs to change sentence structures.
C.Changing the simple present tense into the past tense.
4.Which one is right about EF English E-Magazine?
A.It’s free to use.
B.It’s mainly for English grammar.
C.It has useful information about politeness.
5.What does the passage mainly talk about?
A.Steps for the use of polite expressions.
B.Polite expressions in English and their importance.
C.Reasons for using some polite expressions early.

Learning a new language can be challenging but useful. Whether you’re studying English, Chinese, or another language, here is some useful advice to help you succeed.
Start by setting clear goals. Ask yourself: Why do I want to learn this language? Is it for travel, school, or personal growth? For example, learn 10 new words every day or hold a 5-minute conversation weekly. Clear goals keep you learning a language actively.
Consistency (连贯性) is key. Spend at least 15-30 minutes every day practicing. Listen to English songs, read short articles, or keep a diary in the language. Even small things can make a big difference over time.
Connect traditional ways with modern tools. Watch movies in the language, use language-learning apps (like Duolingo) and so on. These resources make learning easy and fun. For example, watching cartoons helps improve listening and reading skills at the same time.
Speak without fear. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Join language clubs, find a study partner, or talk with native speakers online. Practice makes you feel better. As the saying goes, “Mistakes are proof (证据) that you’re trying.”
Create an immersive (沉浸式的) environment. Change your phone’s language settings or listen to music in the language. Immersion helps you think naturally in the language and understand cultural contexts.
1.Which of the following ideas appears in more than one part of the article?
A.Practicing often. B.Using new tools.
C.Joining language clubs. D.Learning a language for school.
2.What is the writer’s opinion about making mistakes in language learning?
A.Mistakes are a sign you are trying.
B.Mistakes mean you are not ready to learn.
C.Mistakes should be avoided at all times.
D.Mistakes only happen when the language is hard.
3.Which section of a magazine is the article most probably taken from?
A.Sports news. B.Movie reviews.
C.Travel safety advice. D.Language learning tips.
The Chinese language differs from western languages in that, instead of an alphabet (字母表), it uses characters (汉字) which stand for ideas, objects or deeds (行为). As one kind of the most ancient characters, Chinese characters have played an important part in the development of Chinese culture.
Chinese characters began thousands of years ago. According to an ancient story, a man named Cang Jie invented Chinese characters. One winter day while he was hunting, he saw the footprints of animals in the snow and noticed that each one was different. Then he had the idea that he could use different shapes to represent (代表) different objects. The first Chinese characters were drawings of physical objects. Some characters have been simplified and others have been made more difficult over time.
However, as a whole, the characters have developed from drawings into standard forms. The character for a mountain was at first three mountain tops together. This became one mountain top and three lines, and over time turned into the character used nowadays.
Not all characters were developed from drawings of objects. Sometimes to express ideas, some characters were made by putting two or more characters together. For example, “rest” was made up of the characters for a man and a tree. The character “prisoner” (囚) was formed (构成) with a “man” inside a square. Other characters were developed for directions and numbers. It is easy to distinguish (区别) their meanings by looking at them, for example, the characters for “up” and “down” which are opposite of each other.
Though these kinds of characters show meanings, one of their shortcomings (缺点) is that they do not show how they should be pronounced. Therefore, a way was developed to have one part of a character represent the meaning and the other suggest the pronunciation. Many Chinese characters used today were made this way.
In the 1950s the Chinese government introduced simplified Chinese characters in the hope of making learning to read and write more understandable to a large number of people. And now they have widespread use in China’s mainland.
1.Which is NOT included in the process of inventing the first Chinese characters?
A.Watching the footprints of animals. B.Creating shapes of objects.
C.Using different shapes. D.Drawing physical objects.
2.Which Chinese character uses the underlined method?
A.山 B.竹 C.明 D.妈
3.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Chinese characters have turned into standard forms, which are easier than before.
B.Chinese characters we use today have been accepted by large numbers of people.
C.Chinese characters existed (存在) at the very beginning and are still in use today like other ancient symbols.
D.Chinese words and English words are both formed by putting alphabets and characters together.
4.Where are simplified Chinese characters widely used now?
A.In all countries around the world. B.In ancient China.
C.In China’s mainland. D.In western countries.
5.What might be the best title for the passage?
A.How to Form Chinese Characters
B.The Difference between Chinese and Western Language
C.The History of the Chinese Language
D.The Development of Chinese Characters
Do you ever feel like you are just running from one activity to another? In school, do you rush from one subject to another? When things happen so fast, you may easily get lost in what you are doing or learning. It is important to stop yourself every now and then to think about what you’ve been doing or learning.
Self-reflection means slowing down and calming yourself, including calming your mind. By being calm and going slowly, you give your brain a chance to look at the things it has already received. Some people prefer to do the self-reflection only in their mind. Others write notes. Either method works, depending on your own learning habits. Here are some tips on self-reflection in your study.
Use natural breaks in your textbooks as chances to stop and reflect. School textbooks are often divided into chapters and units. This makes it easier for you to begin the process of self-reflection. Look for the times when you complete a unit of study in the subjects you are learning, such as math, social studies, science and art. Sometimes you know the unit is over because there is some kind of test or quiz.
Write down some notes on the new things that you learned in the unit. Let your mind think about the notes you have written and make some connections. Sometimes just pausing to think deeply allows your brain to make connections. Having lots of connections allows your brain to quickly retrieve information when you need it again.
Next, think about things that you are unsure of. For example, maybe you learned about a certain body system, but you’re not sure how it works together with the other body systems. Maybe you learned a new way to solve a math problem, but you’re not sure when to use it. Writing down your questions will help you remember to look for answers the next time you are working with the same topic.
Self-reflection is an essential skill for a successful student. If you have never taken the time to reflect, try it now.
1.What does the underlined word “self-reflection” mean?
A.自我欣赏 B.自我否定 C.自我表现 D.自我反思
2.Why should we do self-reflection?
A.To make our brain more active.
B.To have more activities and subjects.
C.To make things happen faster and better.
D.To have a better understanding about what we learned.
3.What does the underlined word “retrieve” probably mean in paragraph 4?
A.Store up. B.Get back. C.Pass down. D.Look through.
4.The structure of the passage can be ________.
A.①/②③④⑤⑥ B.①/②③④⑤/⑥
C.①/②/③④⑤⑥ D.①/②/③④⑤/⑥
5.What’s the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?
A.To suggest a new learning skill to students.
B.To show students the importance of learning.
C.To introduce a new school subject to students.
D.To describe a special learning experience to students.

3.Which of the following did people use when they wanted something politely in the past?
①Might I use your knife? ②May I try your bike now?
③Can I use your computer? ④Could you lend me your eraser?
A.①②③ B.①②④ C.②③④ D.①③④

1. Use modal verbsWhen we use modal verbs, like would, could or may, we can turn a direct (直接的) question into a polite request.
