I once was a quick-tempered boy. If I mumbled (嘟哝), I got angry. When I got angry, I’d yell at anyone nearby, not caring who they were or what they were doing. Then they would make fun of me. Eventually, many people around me disliked me because of this. They started avoiding me. Even though I felt like I needed to improve myself, I didn’t know how.
My father was patient with me and one day he gave me a basket full of nails (钉子) and a hammer (铁锤). Every time I got angry, he advised me to avoid scolding (责骂) the people involved and hammer a nail into the wooden fence behind the house until I calmed down. The first day, I hammered about 50 nails into the fence. As the days passed, I learned to control my hurtful speech in front of those who made me angry. Only when I got angry should I go and hammer the nails immediately!
Eventually, before I could take the basket and hammer and go to the fence, my anger cooled and I started hammering nails into the fence less. In a few days, I no longer felt the need to hammer nails into the fence. I went to my father and told him the details. Although he was happy inside, he didn’t show it. He gave me a nail puller and asked me to pull out the nails I had hammered into the fence one by one. It took me a whole day to pull them all out. After pulling out all the nails, my father and I went to see the fence. My father showed me the scars where the nails had been pulled out from the fence and said, “When you get angry, you lose your mind and say things like this nail. Even if you apologize for speaking as if you were pulling out a nail, the wound left by those words is just as hard to heal as the scar from this nail.”
I too understood the concept well, changed, grew up to respect my village, and achieved many successes in life.
4. What did the boy do when he got angry at the beginning?
A. He behaved rudely to people around.
B. He apologized to the people he had hurt.
C. He avoided people who made him angry.
D. He immediately hammered nails into the fence.
5. Why did the boy’s father give him nails and a hammer?
A. To help him control his anger.
B. To punish him for his bad behavior.
C. To teach him how to repair the fence.
D. To make him stronger by hammering nails.
6. How did the father react when the boy stopped hammering nails?
A. He apologized to the boy.
B. He showed his inner happiness.
C. He asked the boy to remove the nails.
D. He told the boy to repair the damaged fence.
7. Which best summarizes the main lesson of this story?
A. Actions speak louder than words.
B. Time heals all wounds.
C. Practice makes perfect.
D. What’s done cannot be undone.
C
Can you imagine a world without music? Studies show that public schools across the country are cutting back on music classes to save money. Worse, some schools have never had music classes to begin with. But without them, students’ academic (学术) growth and emotional health could suffer. In fact, music classes are necessary for all students in schools.
Recent studies by Brown University have shown that students who received music education classes were better in maths and reading skills than those without music classes. Another study by the College Board found that students taking music and art classes got higher points. Students’ academic success seems to depend on their taking part in music education.
Music programmes in public schools also help to add to a student’s sense of pride and self-confidence. Teens today have too many learning tasks. Besides, they have family problems, self-confidence problems, relationship troubles, and other troubles. All of these can stop academic success, but music education can help. A study by the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse found that students who took part in school music programmes were less likely to turn to drugs. Music programmes encourage students to work together to produce an excellent performance.
Music crosses language, class, cultural and political boundaries (界限). Music allows students from different countries to connect. For example, at a school talent show, a new Japanese student played a piano duet (二重奏) with an American classmate. Although they could not communicate verbally (口头上), they were able to read the music in order to play the duet. Two students from different cultures worked as a team with self-confidence and common purpose through music.
The gift of music is priceless. We need to be sure to have necessary music classes for all students. The world is losing its music, and putting music into schools is the first step to get it back.
8. What can we learn about education with music classes?
A. It allows schools to make more money.
B. It leads to a lot of emotional problems easily.
C. It has a great influence on the culture of the country.
D. It does good to students’ academic success and emotional health.
9. What do the two studies seem to show?
A. Not all students take part in music lessons.
B. Music plays an important role in students’ success.
C. Students with great success like to attend music lessons.
D. Students having music classes are better in all lessons.
10. The example in Paragraph 4 mainly suggests that__________.
A. different cultures have different styles of music.
B. music makes cross-country communication possible.
C. Japan has a good international relationship with America.
D. Japanese and American students are good at playing the piano.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. How to Get Music Back. B. Music Education in Schools.
C. Music-a Bridge to Understanding. D. The Importance of Listening to Music.
D
Last year I averaged 9,370 steps a day. My smartphone counted. My daily aim? Ten thousand steps. Because goals.
Yet the concept of taking 10,000 steps a day to maintain health is rooted not in science but in marketing. In the 1960s, a Japanese company invented an early pedometer (计步器). Because the Japanese character for “10,000” looks like a person walking, the company called its device the 10,000-step meter. “It was just sort of a catchy phrase,” says I-Min Lee, a scientist at Harvard Medical School.
In 2019, Lee published a study investigating the actual effects of meeting the 10,000-step goal. The result? Some movement is good, and more is better, but the benefits decline at some point. Your personal peak depends on your age. People younger than 60 should indeed walk 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day to get the best benefits in terms of lifespan (寿命). People older than 60 show the most benefit between 6,000 and 8,000 steps.
The difference is energy consumption. “We basically relate energy consumption to health outcomes,” Lee says. Walking for 60 minutes at 3.3 miles an hour and running for 30 minutes at 6 miles an hour use the same amount of energy. “The older you are, the less efficient you are with your steps,” Lee says. “Per step, older people use more energy.” Thus, they need fewer steps to achieve the same benefits.
Newer studies are moving beyond death rates to ask questions about the way steps may help to control blood pressure and weight. The goal, after all, is not just to live longer but to live healthier. Full results are not in yet, so Lee’s advice is: “Tailor your steps according to what you are trying to achieve and according to who you are.”
12. The concept of taking 10,000 steps daily arises from ______.
A. the findings of scientific surveys B. the formation of a Japanese character
C. a marketing trick D. a healthy habit
13. What does Lee’s research find?
A. Walking step targets vary with age.
B. Walking more makes one look younger.
C. Old people benefit more from walking longer.
D. Reaching 10,000 steps daily appeals to many.
14. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A The difference in energy consumption among age groups.
B. The contrast between the benefits of walking and running.
C. The reason for setting different step goals based on age.
D. The link between energy consumption and health outcomes.
15. What will newer studies focus on?
A. How steps change one’s lifestyle. B. How steps affect one’s lifespan.
C. How steps reduce death rates. D. How steps boost healthy living.

Can you imagine a world without music? Studies show that public schools across the country are cutting back on music classes to save money. Worse some schools have never had music classes to begin with.
A different cultures have different styles of music.
B. music makes cross-country communication possible.
C. Japan has a good international relationship with America.
D. Japanese and American students are good at playing the piano.

A. The difference in energy consumption among age groups.
B. The contrast between the benefits of walking and running.
C. The reason for setting different step goals based on age.
D The link between energy consumption and health outcomes.
15. What will newer studies focus on?
A. How steps change one’s lifestyle. B. How steps affect one’s lifespan.
C. How steps reduce death rates. D. How steps boost healthy living.
C 13. A 14. C 15. D

根据第二段中“Yet the concept of taking 10,000 steps a day to maintain health is rooted not in science but in marketing.”(然而,每天走10000步来保持健康的概念并非源于科学,而是源于营销。)
根据第三段中“People younger than 60 should indeed walk 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day to get the best benefits in terms of lifespan (寿命). People older than 60 show the most benefit between 6,000 and 8,000 steps.”(60岁以下的人确实应该每天走8000到10000步,以获得寿命方面的最佳效益。 故选A。
根据第四段“The difference is energy consumption. “We basically relate energy consumption to health outcomes,” Lee says. Walking for 60 minutes at 3.3 miles an hour and running for 30 minutes at 6 miles an hour use the same amount of energy. “The older you are, the less efficient you are with your steps,” Lee says. “Per step, older people use more energy.” Thus, they need fewer steps to achieve the same benefits.”(差别在于能源消耗。
根据最后一段“Newer studies are moving beyond death rates to ask questions about the way steps may help to control blood pressure and weight.”(新的研究不再局限于死亡率,而是开始探讨步数如何有助于控制血压和体重。)

根据上文“Going from middle school into the freshman year of high school is a big change. (从初中到高一是一个很大的挑战。)”可知,本句提出了话题“新生入学是一个挑战”,而下文中出现了小标题,说明这里需要一个过渡句承上启下,G项“Here are some ways to help you deal with anxious feelings and prepare for the first year.(以下是一些帮助你处理焦虑情绪并为第一年做好准备的方法。)”是一个总起下文的句子,且句中“help you deal with anxious feelings and prepare for the first year(帮助你处理焦虑情绪并为第一年做好准备)”是对上文中“挑战”的应对,符合语境。故选G项。
根据上文“Getting to know people you haven’t met before is a great way to broaden your horizons (眼界). (结识你从未见过的人是拓宽你眼界的好方法。)”可知,与陌生人接触是可以增加人脉的方法之一,而空后内容“Simply sitting with a new person at lunch can be enough to get the ball rolling.(仅仅是和一个陌生人共进午餐就足以让事情开始发展。)” C项“If you’re nervous, start small.(如果你紧张,从小事做起。)”
根据后文“They might be able to show you round the campus, which will make you have more confidence as you go on with your freshman year.(他们可能会带你参观校园,这会让你在大一的时候更有信心。)” F项“If you worry about the unknown, reach out to the school and see if someone can help.(如果你对未知的事情感到担心,那就联系学校,看看是否有人能帮你。)”
根据上文“Academically speaking, high school and middle school are very different. (从学术上讲,高中和中学有很大的不同。)”和下文“You can buy a planner (记事簿) and spend a few minutes each night going over the notes you took in class that day. (你可以买一个记事本,每天晚上花几分钟复习你当天在课堂上做的笔记。)”可知,本段主要讲述在学习方面初高中的不同,作者也给出具体的建议:对于学习要有所整理。D项“Try to get as organized as possible so you can stay on top of your work.(尽可能地组织起来,这样你就可以随时掌握你的学习。)”符合语境,其中“as organized as possible(尽可能有条理)”与小标题“Get organized.(要有条理。)”
根据本段内容“While there’s no need to plan every day for the next three years, it can’t hurt to make notes of classes you want to take or activities you’d like to try. Believe it or not, the three years goes by really fast. Having a plan in place will help you make good use of your high school experience.(虽然没有必要为未来三年的每一天做计划,但把你想参加的课程或想尝试的活动记下来也无妨。信不信由你,三年过得真快。有一个适当的计划将帮助你充分利用你的高中经历。)”可知,本段的主旨是建议制定一个三年计划。A项“Create a three-year plan.(制定一个三年计划。)” 故选A项。
