From designing spacecraft to flying in one, Wang Jie, a crew member of China’s Shenzhou-20 mission, is ready to write his chapter in the country’s space exploration.
The 35-year-old’s space dream began in 2003 in a classroom in Urad Front Banner, Bayannur City of north China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, about 400 kilometers from the landing site of the Shenzhou-5 return capsule. His middle school teacher wrote on the blackboard about astronaut Yang Liwei’s triumphant return to Earth, which marked the completion of China’s first crewed space mission. Wang Jie watched intently, and his cosmic aspirations took root in that historic moment.
Dreaming of the stars, Wang enrolled at Shenyang Aerospace University in north China to study aircraft manufacturing engineering. After earning his bachelor’s degree, he continued to study mechanics at Beihang University in Beijing. After obtaining his doctorate, Wang joined the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST) under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, devoting himself to cutting-edge spacecraft research and development. Over the years, his diligence earned him recognition as a seasoned lead designer.
Selected to be a member of China’s third batch of astronauts in 2020, Wang faced great challenges. Training in the weightlessness simulation water tank for extravehicular (舱外的) activities proved especially tough for him. During the training, he had to wear an underwater training suit and use his hands to control body positioning while performing tasks like extravehicular transfers, moving on and off the robotic arm and assembling equipment. A single training session could last five to six hours, pushing his physical limits to the extreme. He pushed himself to overcome his weaknesses. He consistently put in extra effort and was often the last one to leave the physical training area.
“I never dared to slack off during training and strived for every point in exams. Now, I have finally achieved my first flight, and I’m honored to contribute my efforts to advancing China’s space endeavors,” Wang said.
4. What inspired Wang’s space dream?
A. An unusual space-themed class. B. A direct sighting of Shenzhou-5.
C. A pioneering space achievement. D. An uplifting speech by Yang Liwei.
5. What can be inferred about Wang from paragraph 3?
A. He consistently worked toward his space ambition. B. He faced many challenges on his astronaut journey.
C. He played a major role in the development of CAST. D. He greatly revolutionized China’s space exploration.
6. What was difficult for Wang?
A. Seeking technical solutions. B. Meeting strict physical demands.
C. Grasping theoretical knowledge. D. Adapting to isolated environments.
7. What can we learn from Wang’s story?
A. A bold attempt is half success. B. Failure is the mother of success.
C. Where there is a will, there is a way. D. A good beginning makes a good ending.

In 2024, over 700 million people around the world faced hunger, a crisis worsened by climate change, conflict and economic instability, according to the United Nations. As the food system struggles under these pressures, new technologies are emerging to address these global challenges. One such innovation, electro-agriculture, offers a potential solution.
Electro-agriculture uses electricity to free agriculture from traditional limitations like sunlight, land and soil, potentially revolutionizing the way we grow food and opening the door to a more sustainable and efficient food system. It employs electrolysis (电解) to turn carbon dioxide and water into nutrients that plants require. The core process involves tandem electrolysis, a two-step method that first reduces carbon dioxide (CO2) to carbon monoxide (CO) and then turns CO into acetate (醋酸钙) — a vital carbon source for plants. The acetate provides plants with the energy and building blocks needed for growth, allowing them to grow without the need for sunlight.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, approximately 53.6 million people in the U.S. live in low-income and low-access areas, where ways to obtain nutritious food are limited. When these areas occur in cities, they’re often known as urban food deserts, and electro-agriculture could significantly impact them. Without land, water and sunlight limitations, electro-agriculture could bring food production directly to cities, reducing reliance on long distance transportation and improving food accessibility.
So far, electro-agriculture has-succeeded in growing mushrooms, algae and yeast. The team’s current experiments are focused on tomatoes, lettuce, and other small-scale crops, with hopes of extending to high-calorie crops like grains and sweet potatoes in the future. However, to succeed with these crops, the team must genetically modify them to metabolize (代谢) acetate, a process that’s not yet possible for all plants. Acetate must be turned into usable energy for growth, and the team is working on enhancing plants’ ability to do this.
8. What is the purpose of electro-agriculture?
A. To reduce the cost of food transportation.
B. To increase the nutritional value of vegetables.
C. To offer a sustainable solution for food production.
D. To improve crops’ ability to adapt to extreme weather.
9. How does acetate work in electro-agriculture?
A. By cutting down on carbon emissions.
B. By enhancing plants’ resistance to diseases.
C. By providing essential conditions for plant growth.
D. By improving soil quality to promote plant growth.
10. Which of the following words could best describe electro-agriculture?
A. Practical and promising.
B. Traditional and productive.
C. Efficient and well-received.
D. Complex and time-consuming.
11. What can we learn about the research team from the last paragraph?
A. They focus on finding an alternative to acetate.
B. They are working to help crops metabolize acetate.
C. They are intended to save energy during plant growth.
D. They have experimented with growing high-calorie crops.
D
After winning the 2024 FT & Schroders Business Book of the Year Award for Supremacy, Parmy Olson has begun using large language models(LLMs)more frequently in her own research. “They can be a helpful tool for bouncing ideas around, exploring angles and getting historical references to make comparisons,” she says. However, Olson remains skeptical about their ability to produce engaging writing. She finds the results uninspiring and argues that no model can truly generate text capable of replacing her own writing.
The rise of AI in publishing has caused heated debate. While some view LLMs as useful tools, others argue they threaten authorship (著作权) — particularly when models are trained on pirated books without permission. In response, publishers have pushed for control claused to resist such use or ensure compensation. Elsewhere in the industry, others are focused on shaping responsible use. A survey of 5,000 writers led to the release of AI guidelines by publisher Wiley, emphasizing that AI should serve as a companion to human creativity, not a replacement.
Kevin Andersons CEO of a ghostwriting (代笔) agency, believes AI will mostly replace lower — to mid-level ghostwriters, as AI can quickly produce standard, well-structured instructional books. However, he argues that high-end ghostwriting deals still require human judgment, empathy (同理心), and interviewing skills, which machines are unable to replicate. “Generating content isn’t necessarily the part that humans do better than AI. It’s figuring out what the content should be and being that interviewer, using their human intuition to figure out how to get the story out of the person the right way” he says.
The technology is advancing fast. Mr Esmond Harmsworth, president of the literary agency Aevitas, warns, “Already we are seeing a large decline in some of the side jobs that authors have done to supplement book income.” He adds that authors must now compete with AI-generated books that sometimes reuse their own ideas or phrasing. Harmsworth acknowledges that AI hasn’t caught up with top talent — “but the big question we have all faced is how long that will last.”
12. What does Parmy Olson think of LLMs in writing?
A. They excel at fascinating content.
B. They are valuable for generating ideas.
C. They can faithfully copy others’ writing styles.
D. They might produce incorrect historical references.
13. Why were AI guidelines issued?
A. To regulate AI’s role as a supportive tool.
B. To protect the authorship of original works.
C. To prohibit the application of AI in publishing.
D. To reduce AI companies’ loss from legal conflicts.
14. Which statement would Mr. Anderson probably agree with?
A. High-end ghostwriting will be dominated by AI in the future.
B. Human talent remains in high demand in the writing industry.
C. Humans are accomplished at conveying true emotions in writing.
D. AI has almost satisfied the requirements of any writing assignment.
15. What is Harmsworth’s attitude toward AI’s impact on authors?
A. Optimistic. B. Disappointed.
C. Unclear. D. Concerned.

I was in my room, unwilling to head to the community theatre with “my brother” Henry. He was just adopted by my parents recently. I was not in the mood for being onstage with him.
“Kristie, come here,” my mom called. Following her voice, I found her outside the bathroom, holding a wet book. She gave the book a shake. “Henry’s book was in the bathtub. Did you put it there?” She glared at me — something she never did before Henry came to our home. I didn’t wet his book on purpose. Tears of hurt clouded my eyes. Worse still, she promised to buy him a new copy. My heart ached. Henry was stealing my mother’s love. He was ruining my life.
Meanwhile, Henry was just nearby, absorbed in working on a complicated rope knot (绳结) as usual. Why did a boy like him do the girly work? Far from manly!
Soon, it was time to have to set off for the community theatre. As Henry walked ahead of us to the car, my mom took me aside and said in a low voice, “It’s the first time for Henry to be onstage. Be kind to him. Honey.” I nodded but sighed. Being kind didn’t use to be hard. But after Henry moved in, everything felt different. The theatre used to be a special place for my parents and me. With Henry involved, it didn’t seem so special any more.
Finally, it was our stage time. My heart beat wildly. I forgot my annoyance at Henry for a while. As we kids lined up, ready to act out our short play, I realized how loosely I had tied the drawstring (束带) on my skirt. Sure enough, my skirt began to drop. Laughter from the audience could be heard, and even though I was wearing shorts under my skirt, I could feel my face burst into flames. However, my hands were full. If only someone could help me out!
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Right then, Henry sensed my embarrassment.

C. Unclear. D. Concerned.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

After the performance, I found Henry and tapped him on the arm gratefully.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Right then, Henry sensed my embarrassment. He immediately came to my aid. With a calm and steady hand, he quickly retied the drawstring on my skirt, saving me from further humiliation. “Don’t worry, I’ve got you,” he whispered, offering a reassuring smile. I felt a surge of gratitude mixed with guilt for all the negative thoughts I had harbored against him. I regretted having treated him as a stranger. While my mind was wandering, our performance time came. It turned out to be a great success, thunderous applause filling the whole theatre.
After the performance, I found Henry and tapped him on the arm gratefully. “Thank you, Henry,” I said with a grateful smile on my face. I had to admit that but for his timely help, I would have been extremely embarrassed. “That’s what brothers are for,” he replied simply. At that moment, I realized how wrong I had been about him. Henry wasn’t stealing my mother’s love or ruining my life; he was becoming an integral part of our family, bringing his own strengths and kindness. As we walked back to the car, I felt a newfound bond with Henry, understanding that our differences could be a source of strength rather than division.
