In Woods Chan's class at a high school in California, students chat with each other in
Spanish,Arabic(阿拉伯语)and Mam,a Mayan language from Guatemala.The students
have only been in the US for a few weeks or months. Many students were from different
countries last year.Woods Chan became concerned when she started hearing the Spanish-
speaking students laugh when their classmates spoke Mam or Arabic.
Woods Chan came up with an idea. She asked her students to take turns teaching a lit-
tle bit of their home language each day.Students taught their partners how to count from 1
to 10,how to introduce themselves and how to say basic phrases or words like "Cool".
Then, they recorded themselves saying those phrases in short videos and wrote vocabulary
words on the whiteboard.
Woods Chan saw the difference in her students. She said they grew more confident af-
ter seeing their own language on the whiteboard and hearing it in the videos. They started
making friends with each other across cultural lines.Other students who were not in that
class would come in and see something written in Mam on the whiteboard and say,"Hey,
that's Mam!I speak Mam!"
The project also helped students understand their partners better.Orlando,a 17-year-
old student from El Salvador, said he never knew Arabic or Mam,even existed before he
came to the US and heard his classmates talk. Now,he thinks it would be good for all
students in his school to learn a little of their partners'home languages."When I first got
here,"he said in Spanish,"I thought,'No one talks like me.I'm the only one,and I felt
lonely.’Now,Idon't feel so bad anymore.”
Knowledge of other languages can help Woods Chan's students beyond the classroom,
too.Languages like Mam are becoming more and more common in the US.Some Oakland
graduates have gone on to become Mam-English interpreters()to help fill a lack of
interpreters in all kinds of settings.
4.What made Woods Chan think of the idea?
A.Some of her students making fun of other languages.
B.Her students hardly using their home languages.
C.Her students being interested in learning a new language.
D.Her students having difficulty communicating with each other.
5.What was the students'feeling of seeing their home languages written on the white-
board?
A.Angry but accepting.
B.Excited and proud.
C.Worried but supportive.
D.Relaxed and creative.
6.What effect did Woods Chan's project have on Orlando?
A.It made him feel less lonely at school.
B.It encouraged him to get a job as an interpreter.
C.It helped him understand his home language better.
D.It enabled him to work better in foreign language classes.
7.What can be the best title for the text?
A.School Is Not the Only Place to Learn

These students wandering through the woods on the outskirts()of Portland,Or-
egon, aren't on a school field trip-this muddy field is their school. From the moment
they're dropped off in the morning, they spend their entire day outside in one of Oregon's
public parks."Rain or shine,we're out here, said teacher Christine Fleener.
On this surprisingly nice day,Fleener's class of fifth graders headed to the grassland
for a biology lesson.Further down the trail,a group of fourth graders is learning on logs.
It's school, just not the type of school you might be used to."Forest school is where the
classroom does not have walls,"said Tony Deis, one of the founders of Trackers Earth
Forest School."It's how kids originally learned;they didn't learn sitting at desks, facing
forward,and looking at a teacher.They learned from a multi-sensory environment."
Over the past decade, outdoor forest schools have gained popularity in the United
States. The idea is that the challenges that come with being outside all day-dealing with
weather, building your own shelter, and unearthing the unexpected are all part of the
learning process.
It's complicated,of course.Outdoor schooling involves a puzzle of weather and regu-
lations and budget issues.A well-funded private school in Portland,Oregon is one thing,
but what about a public school in Portland,Maine?Surprisingly, cold Maine,of all places,
has been quick to adopt outdoor learning.
The district isn't all out side all the time, but certain classes, like art, have moved
outdoors.Supplies came from federal()funds and local donations. And while Maine
has plenty of open space,Brooke Teller, the outdoor learning coordinator()for
Portland Public Schools, believes schools in major cities could have green classrooms hiding
underneath their pavement().She said,"We have a few hundred landscape architects
all across the country who have volunteered to be a thought partner with schools that want
to figure out where on their grounds would be best for outdoor learning."
8.What does the author describe at the beginning of the text?
A.The routine of a forest school.
B.The popularity of public parks.
C.An interesting school field trip.
D.An unforgettable biology lesson.
9.What is the main philosophy behind the concept of forest schools?
A.Kids learn by outdoor practice.
B.Kids learn out of curiosity.
C.Kids learn by challenging others.
D.Kids learn by interacting with others.
10.What does Teller suggest schools that want to start outdoor education do?
A.Start from certain classes.
B.Work with landscape architects.
C.Make use of their open space.
D.Build green classrooms underground.
11.What can be the best title for the text?
A.A new way of learning
B.Benefits of learning outdoors
C.Outdoor forest schools
D.Outdoor education in Oregon

You may not know a lot of people when you start senior high school.Maybe your
friends from junior high school are going to a different senior high school.Even if you know
other freshmen(一年级学生),you still feel jittery that you don't know any upperclassmen.
How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces?
Most senior high schools hold the freshman orientation()before school actually
starts. It is helpful because you not only learn your way around the building but also get to
meet some of your teachers and fellow freshmen. That way, when you show up on your
first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces.
When you talk to people at orientation, you'll probably find that a lot of them are feel-
ing just like you are. They're all new to the school and don't know what to expect.Talking
about a common concern with your classmates can help you develop friendships.
The work in senior high school is something freshmen are probably worried about. It
builds on what you learned in junior high school, giving you a more advanced (
knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it's a bit
more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.
