During my summer vacation,I made a decision-I was going to go out every day on what I
called a "walk-run".I decided to travel the same mile-long route each day in some combination(
of walking,jogging and running.
As long as I returned with red cheeks and clear-heard breath,I decided,I would do what I set
out to do.Some days, when it was hot or I was tired, there was far more walking than running. On
other days,I felt enough energy,then I ran.
Over a week,I noticed that my body knew how to set its own pace.My legs would find their
speed as the outing continued;my breath would find its pace, and I would complete a"walk-run"
in whatever way met my physical and emotional needs on that special day.
It occurred to me during those outings that setting the right pace-and trusting myself to know
when to level up or down-is a key skill for a positive lifestyle.
It can be hard to find the right pace for ourselves, though, especially in an age when
everything we do seems to be watched and compared with what others are doing. To me,this
pressure only makes it more important for each of us to remain present to our own needs, rather
than comparing ourselves to what we are considered to be by others.
The 19th century naturalist Henry David Thoreau offers this idea:"If a man does not keep
pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer.Let him step to the
music which he hears, however measured or far away.It is not important that he should mature(
as soon as an apple tree or an oak.Shall he turn his spring into summer?"
So as you journey into the next season of the year, will you walk or run along your positive
path?Or will you set out in some combination of the two today, knowing that each new day
afterward will develop at its own pace?

After the Championship锦标赛后
Sweat ran its way down my cheek. It was hot,but the air was still and wet.One final play
and the State Softball Championship was ours.
I looked towards people who were watching the game.Sure enough,I found my mum.I
always wished my dad were here. The farm needed his full attention, but I did not care.
Finally,we won!State Champs!I let out a scream of happiness,full of tears.My mum
made a"V"to celebrate my success and smiled.I smiled back at her.
We all received medals, but I couldn't remember any of it.I concentrated my thoughts on
my dad.I ran to my mum, asking for her cell phone.I had to tell my dad about the happiest day
of my life, and complained about how he did not care.
The phone rang twice, and no one answered. My heart sank with sadness, but I tried again
anyway.
“Hello??”my dad answered.
“Dad!”I cried..“We won State!”Silence..
“Dad?”I could hear something on the other end.“Are you--crying?”
“T'm just really happy for you,Meggie,”he said..“AndI'm sorry I couldn't be there.”
An apology was all I needed.I hung up the phone feeling relaxed, and I began to understand
how it must feel to be a father.I forgave him for never being there. He worked so I could play.
My father loved me enough to let me experience life's happiest moments without him.

Swim Underneath Mt,Everest在珠穆朗玛峰下游泳
Last year,I heard about the Himalayas and the melting of the ice because of climate change.
I decided to do a symbolic swim underneath Mt.Everest, the highest mountain on this Earth.
When we got up to the small lake underneath the summit of Mt.Everest,I prepared myself
in usual ways, not realizing this swim would be so difficult.I put on my iPod,listened to some
music, got myself as aggressive as possible and then I threw myself into that water.I swam as
quickly as I could for the first hundred metres.Afterwards I realized the huge problem on my
hands. My fingers were exactly the size of sausages because-you know,we're made partially of
water-when water freezes it expands.I then could barely breathe, began to choke and even
threw up in the water. It all happened so quickly.I don't know why,but I went underwater.
Luckily, the water was quite shallow, and I was able to push myself off the bottom of the lake.
I've heard it said that drowning is the most peaceful death you can have.I have never, ever heard
such nonsense.
In our camp,I talked about what had gone wrong there on Mt.Everest with my crew.My
team just gave it to me straight."Lewis, you need to have a complete shift if you want to make
it.Every single thing you've learned in the past 23 years of swimming, you must forget. And also
the every single thing you learned when you were serving in the British army, about speed and
aggression. This is the time to swim with real respect."
I can't tell how good and thankful I felt when I swam to the other side two days later. But I
learned a very, very important lesson there on Mt.Everest:Although something worked in the
past so well,it doesn't mean it's going to work in the future.
