Louisa May Alcott路易莎·梅·奥尔科特
One of America's best-known and most-loved authors is Louisa May Alcott. She wrote poems,
plays, short stories and books. For over the years, her works have been popular among both adults
and children. How did Alcott become a famous writer?
Born in 1832,Alcott grew up in Massachusetts with her three sisters. When she was very
young, she loved to write. She would think up wonderful stories that she turned into plays.Alcott
and her sisters acted out the dramas.Alcott always played the most exciting parts:ghosts, bandits
()and evil queens. She also loved playing and wandering outdoors. In fact, she was
considered quite a“tomboy(假小子)”.In those days, girls were expected to be ladylike, which
meant mostly sitting around looking pretty. This was not Alcott's way!She once said that no boy
could be her friend until she had beaten him in a race.Girls had to climb trees and leap fences with
her if they wanted to be her friends.
Alcott's family was poor.At age fifteen,Alcott decided to help out. However,it was not easy
for women to find work in the 19th century.Alcott worked at any job she could find. She took care
of children, she taught, and she washed laundry for other people.
Alcott's love of writing was always an important part of her.She wrote from her own life
experiences and her imagination.During the Civil War,Alcott volunteered to work as a nurse. She
wrote about this work in her book Hospital Sketches. She also wrote thrillers(惊悚小说)that were
full of suspense. When her publisher asked her to write a book for girls,Alcott turned to her own
life.
It was then,in 1868,that she wrote what was to become her most popular book,Little
Women. The novel is set in New England during the Civil War.It tells the story of four sisters
growing up.The family is very similar to the Alcotts. The book's main character,Jo,is based on
Alcott herself.Like Alcott,Jo is a determined young woman with a mind of her own.The book
was an instant success. It is still popular today and has been made into a movie.Alcott also wrote
children's books with boys as the main characters. This was the case in two other Alcott's books,
Little Men and Jo's Boys.
Early in her career, someone once told Alcott that she should give up writing and "stick to
teaching".It is lucky that Alcott paid no attention to this misguided person. She knew what she
wanted to do with her life and she did it!

his long career. These amazing works stand as his gifts to the world.
The glass pyramid of the Louvre Museum in Paris,France might be Pei's most famous work.
Back in the 1980s,the Louvre Museum was having trouble with traffic. To solve the problem,Pei
planned to dig an underground hall and place a glass pyramid on top. Many people didn't like the

success. It is not only the museum's main entrance, but also a huge skylight().
In 2006,Pei was invited to build a museum in his hometown Suzhou. He tried to include local

Leo Tolstoy列夫·托尔斯泰
"Why do I live? Why do I wish for anything,or do anything? Is there anything in my life that
will not be destroyed by my death?"
These are the words of the famous Russian writer Leo Tolstoy.Like Tolstoy, many people ask
these difficult questions. And they struggle to find the meaning of their lives.Tolstoy spent his whole
life trying to answer difficult questions like these. His search for answers influenced his writing.
On September 9 Leo Tolstoy was born in Russia. As a child,Tolstoy was a member of the
Russian Orthodox Church. But as a young man,he began to question that faith.Tolstoy wanted to
make his own moral decisions;he was tired of being told what to believe. He thought people could
achieve a degree of perfection if they tried hard enough. So he worked very hard at being the best in
everything he did.He thought that he would find meaning and truth in success.
In the 1850s,Leo Tolstoy wrote his first story. He wrote about his experiences in the army.
He also told stories about when he was a child. These works were published and Tolstoy became a
well-known writer.
Tolstoy was finally successful. He earned the respect he always wanted. Many wealthy and
intelligent men met and talked with Tolstoy. Some of the men were writers like him. They talked a
lot about faith and the meaning of life. But soon,Tolstoy recognized that these men were not
perfect. Now he knew they could not answer his questions about faith.
So in the 1860s,Tolstoy tried a different way to find the meaning. He opened a school for the
children of his serfs-the people who worked on his land. These workers were very poor.He
wanted to help them because he thought they were more honest than the wealthy people he knew.
Tolstoy learned many things from his workers. He respected how they worked hard to sustain
their families. He began to believe that marriage and family would give his life meaning. So in
1862,Leo Tolstoy married a young woman named Sonya Behrs.
The next 15 years were the best years of Tolstoy's life.It was during this time that he wrote
his most famous books-War and Peace and Anna Karenina. Many literary experts say that War
and Peace is one of the greatest books ever written.
Both War and Peace and Anna Karenina communicate Tolstoy's beliefs about the Russian
nation, church and people. They also communicate what he thought were the answers to all his
questions.Tolstoy believed humans were supposed to live a simple life and take care of their
families.Tolstoy thought this would satisfy him and bring him happiness.
Leo Tolstoy is still a very respected writer today. His faith and writings have influenced many
people.Tolstoy's search for the meaning of life is something everyone can understand. His
teachings still interest people all over the world.

Katherine Johnson凯瑟琳·约翰逊
They asked Katherine Johnson for the Moon, and she gave it to them. With little more than
a pencil,a ruler and one of the finest mathematical minds in the country,Mrs Johnson, who
passed away in 2020,worked out the exact track that would let Apollo 11 land on the Moon in
1969 and,after Neil Armstrong's history-making moonwalk,let it return to the Earth.
Yet throughout Mrs Johnson's 33 years in NASA and for a period of ten years afterwards,
almost no one knew her name.
Born in White Sulphur Springs,West Virginia,in 1918,Mrs Johnson showed great talent
for numbers at an early age which made her ahead several grades in school.By 13,she went to
the high school. At 18,she entered the college and graduated with highest grades in 1937.
Mrs Johnson was one of several hundred strictly educated, with strong ability yet largely
unknown women who, well before the modern feminist movement, worked as NASA
mathematicians. But it was not only her sex that kept her long unimportant. For some years at
mid-century,the black women were influenced by a double segregation:They were kept separate
from the much large group of white women who in turn were segregated from the agency's male
mathematicians and engineers.
Mrs Johnson broke barriers at NASA.In old age,Mrs Johnson became the most celebrated
of black women who served as mathematicians for the space agency.Their story was told in the
2016 Hollywood film Hidden Figures, which was nominated for three Oscars, including Best
Picture.
In 2017,NASA named a building after her. That year, the Washington Post described her
as“the most high-profile of the computers”_“computers'”being the term at first used to
describe Mrs Johnson and her workmates, much as "typewriters"were used in the 19th century
to represent professional typists.
"She helped our nation enlarge the frontiers of space,"NASA's administrator,Jim
Bridenstine, said in a statement,"even as she made huge steps that also opened doors for women
and people of colour to explore space."
As Mrs Johnson herself liked saying, her term at Langley-from 1953 until her retirement
in 1986-was "a time when computers wore skirts".
