The first week of September was a week that I had been expecting (期待) all summer. I didn’t want summer to end, but I was excited about going to high school for my first week.
When I got to school in the morning on the first day, I realized how large the school was, and how many students went there. I ended up in the wrong classroom because of the size of the school. Luckily, a kind senior showed up and guided me to my homeroom before I was late. I was happy to see that in a class of unfamiliar (不熟悉的) faces, the only open seat was next to my good friend Casey. My science teacher seemed like a good teacher. She was exciting and fun.
After finishing four classes without too much of a challenge, I didn’t feel too bad about ninth grade. However, the fifth class changed everything. I didn’t feel ready after all. My teacher’s name is Mr. Valassidis but he told us to call him Mr. V. Mr. V told us that we would have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year. I love reading and writing. But come on. 40 ESSAYS? AP-level books? Now I was afraid.
The courses in high school seem like they’re going to get much harder, but they haven’t yet. Even though my classes look hard, they look really exciting too.
The first week passed quickly. Although a lot of things were overwhelming (令人不知所措的): the size of the campus, the crowds (人群) and the seniors, having a totally different experience than I had ever had before was really exciting. Now, I’m really happy about high school. I have lots of friends in my classes, I really like my teachers and I’m meeting new people.

A. The strict rules in classes.
B. How his science teacher behaved.
C. What he was expected to do with his studies.
D. The reading homework on the first day of high school.
7. Which of the following can best describe the author’s first week of high school?
A. Hard and unexpected. B. Busy but eye-opening.
C. Tiring but meaningful. D. Different and exciting.
C
I work with Volunteers for Wildlife, a rescue (救援) and education organisation at Bailey Arboretum in Locust Valley. Trying to help injured, displaced or sick creatures can be heartbreaking; survival is never certain. However, when it works, it is simply beautiful.
I got a rescue call from a woman in Muttontown. She had found a young owl (猫头鹰) on the ground. When I arrived, I saw a 2 to 3weekold owl. It had already been placed in a carrier for safety.
I examined the chick (雏鸟) and it seemed fine. If I could locate the nest, I might have been able to put it back, but no luck. My next work was to construct (建造) a nest in a tree.
The homeowner was very helpful. A wire basket was found. I put some pine branches (松树枝) into the basket to make this nest safe and comfortable. I placed the chick in the nest, and it quickly calmed down.
Now all that was needed were the parents, but they were nowhere to be found. I gave the homeowner a recording of the hunger screams of owl chicks. These advertised the presence of chicks to adults; they might also encourage our chick to start calling as well. I gave the owner as much information as possible and headed home to see what news the night might bring.
A nervous night to be sure, but sometimes the spirits of nature smile on us all! The homeowner called to say that the parents had responded (回应) to the recording. I drove over and saw the chick in the nest looking healthy and active. And with it was the greatest sight of all — LUNCH! The parents had done their duty and would probably continue to do so.
8. What is unavoidable in the author’s rescue work according to Paragraph 1?
A. Getting injured in his work.
B. Uncertainty about his future.
C. Failing to save the creature.
D. Creatures being forced out of their homes.
9. Why was the author called to Muttontown?
A. To rescue a woman. B. To take care of a woman.
C. To look at a baby owl. D. To cure (治愈) a young owl.
10. What made the chick calm down?
A. A new nest. B. Some food. C. A recording. D. Its parents.
11. How would the author feel about the result of the event?
A. It was unexpected. B. It was beautiful. C. It was funny. D. It was disappointing.
D
English is a very interesting language. It has borrowed words from many other languages. Immigrants (移民) coming into the United States have contributed many words to the language, which have kept their original pronunciation. “Coolie” and “kowtow” were taken from the Chinese language, “kamikaze” from Japanese, “shampoo” from Indian, “blitz” from German, “amigo” and “Los Angeles” from Spanish and so on.
Many students have studied English for years, some as many as eight. However, some students still have difficulty in speaking fluent English. Some know many words, but are unable to discern them when native speakers use them. In our oral English classes we will focus on speaking and listening to native English speakers. Because we are trying to train your ears to hear English and your mouths to speak intelligible (易理解的) English, we will have a rule that ONLY ENGLISH will be spoken in our English classes. Anyone speaking Chinese in class will be required to pay a fine (罚款) in order to encourage the speaking and understanding of English. If teachers enter a classroom and discover that anyone is speaking Chinese, they will require everyone in the room to pay the fine. It is everyone’s job to enforce the English-Only rule. It is for your benefit. It is because we want to accustom (使习惯于) your ears to hearing English.
Other subjects may be learned only from books but the only way to learn a foreign language is to SPEAK IT! Students are often nervous about speaking in class at first but we hope to make the classes fun, so you will forget your nervousness and learn to speak out. Enjoy your classes.
12. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. The difficulty of learning English.
B. Different words in different languages.
C. How interesting and different English is.
D. The immigrants’ contributions to America.
13. What does the underlined word “discern” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. notice B. understand
C. hear D. speak
14. Why is the English-Only rule made?
A. To benefit the teachers.
B. To make the English class more colourful.
C. To require everyone in the room to pay the fine.
D. To improve the students’ abilities of using English.
15. What does the writer think is the only way to learn a language well?
A. Speak it often.
B. Learn it from books.
C. Listen to it on the radio.
D. Play games with it.

10. What made the chick calm down?
A. A new nest. B. Some food. C. A recording. D. Its parents.

A. It was unexpected. B. It was beautiful. C. It was funny. D. It was disappointing.

14. Why is the English-Only rule made?
A. To benefit the teachers.
B. To make the English class more colourful.
C. To require everyone in the room to pay the fine.

15. What does the writer think is the only way to learn a language well?

上文“Most of us have one or a few bad habits that we’d like to get out of. (我们多数人或多或少都会有些想要摆脱的坏习惯。)”引入了文章的话题,摆脱坏习惯,E项“但是你该怎么做呢”进行设问,下文“I have a few suggestions that have helped me and people around me.(我有一些建议,这些建议曾帮助过我和我周围的人。)”
下文“If you tell people around you that you will stop smoking or start to exercise three times a week, then they will check up on you. And you will feel you have to keep your promise because it is let out into the world.(如果你告诉身边的人,你想要戒烟或是一周锻炼三次,那么他们就会帮助监督你。你就会觉得你必须遵守诺言,因为你已经把它昭告天下了。)”讲的是可以通过告诉身边的人自己要戒掉某个坏习惯来摆脱,因为他们会监督你,从而让你想要为自己说过的话负责,去戒掉你的坏习惯。则设空处的内容对应的是戒掉坏习惯的第一条建议:A项“告诉你的朋友或家人”。其中下文的“tell people around you”与A项的“Tell your friends and family”对应。故选A项。
是戒掉坏习惯的第二条建议,B项“了解是什么让你形成了坏习惯”提出避开诱惑的做法是,了解你会受什么诱惑形成坏习惯,其中B项的“what”对应上文的“temptations”,下文“Places where you are likely to spend too much money. Things in your cupboard that will not help you to get healthier and you should not have at home at all. And people that drag (拉) you down and back into your old ways. (比如,一些你可能会大花一笔的地方;橱柜里的东西,那种不利于健康、完全不应放家里的东西;或者是那些把你拖下水、让你变回老样子的人。)”则举出了可能让你形成坏习惯的诱惑的例子。所以B项符合题意。故选B项。
【19题详解】
下文“It may seem like a good idea to change your life all at once. In our daily life, stress and lack (缺乏) of energy usually lead to failure. Don’t try to be Superman or Wonder Woman. Take it easy and break one habit at a time.(一下子改变你的生活似乎是个好主意。在我们的日常生活中,压力和缺乏能量通常会导致失败。不要试图成为超人或神奇女侠。放轻松,一次改掉一个习惯。)”讲的是我们很难一下子摆脱所有的坏习惯,应该按部就班,一次只摆脱一个习惯。由此可知,设空处对应的第三条戒掉坏习惯的建议是F项“不要想着一次戒掉一个以上的坏习惯”。其中下文的“It”指代F项的“break more than one habit at a time”。故选F项。
下文“You will probably not succeed the first time you do it. You fail and you make mistakes when you make changes and try new things. That’s just life and nothing to feel bad about. What you should do next is try again.(你很可能第一次并不会成功戒掉。当你做出改变,尝试新事物的时候,你会失败,犯错。生活就是这样的,你不必觉得这样很不好。你应该做的就是继续尝试。)”讲的是人们尝试戒掉坏习惯的时候,往往不会一次就能成功,但这是正常的,应该继续尝试戒掉。由此可知,设空处的内容应为G项“如果一开始你没有成功,请再试一次”,下文是对G项这一观点的解释。所以G项符合题意。故选G项。
