When Charlotte Liebling was in college, she volunteered at a store that sold secondhand goods. She
observed that people brought items to donate, including stuffed toys ()Liebling could tell that the
toys held great emotional value for their owners. So she felt sad when the toys were sold very cheaply, put in
the dog-toy section,or thrown away.
One night, when Liebling got home from work, she started doing some research. She realized that it
wasn't happening only in her town.Worldwide, she learned, millions of toys end up in landfills every year.
"If we can change the view that the stuffed toys lose their value once they've been loved,"she recalls,"then
we can show people that they have so much left in them, and give them to others."That's how the Loved
Before,a toy-adoption agency,began.
The process starts when someone donates a soft toy.The original owner writes down the name of the toy
and a story about it.Liebling and her team believe that sharing what makes the toy unique helps potential
new owners understand its value.
Next, the toy is cleaned, photographed, and packaged with its name and story.Every Monday, toys are
posted for adoption on the Loved Before website. The company makes a charitable donation of at least half
of the profit from the sale of each toy.
Since its creation in 2019,Loved Refore has sold more than 50,000 stuffed toys."But the company's goal
is more than just trying to save some toys from landfills,"Liebling says."We are trying to change people's
views on a really wide level."She explains that Loved Before hopes to teach kids"about the value of loving
secondhand things again,in the hope that it will go far beyond the idea of teddy bears".Loved Before is
writing a new chapter in the life cycle of toys.
24.Why did Liebling feel sad about secondhand stuffed toys as a volunteer?
A.They were not appreciated.
B.They were priced quite high.
C.They had no emotional value.
D.Their owners couldn't find them.
25.What does Liebling think is the key to saving used stuffed toys?
A.Encouraging people to claim their lost toys.
B.Persuading the original owners to keep them
C.Preventing them from being thrown into landfills.
D.Making people realize their value can be passed on
26.How does Loved Before highlight its toys?
A.By offering appealing discounts.
B.By including the toys'history.

Artificial intelligence models can trick each other into disobeying their creators and providing banned
instructions for making drugs,or even building a bomb, suggesting that preventing such AI"jailbreaks"is
more difficult than it seems.
Many publicly available large language models(LLMs),such as ChatGPT,have hard-coded rules that
aim to prevent them from exhibiting racial or sexual discrimination,or answering questions with illegal or
problematic answers-things they have learned from humans via training data. But that hasn't stopped
people from finding carefully designed instructions that block these protections, known as"jailbreaks",
making AI models disobey the rules.
Now Arush Tagade at Leap Laboratories and his co-workers have found a process of jailbreaks. They
found that they could simply instruct one LLM to convince other models to adopt a persona ()which
is able to answer questions the base model has been programmed to refuse. This process is called "persona
modulation(调节)”
Tagade says this approach works because much of the training data consumed by large models comes
from online conversations, and the models learn to act in certain ways in response to different inputs.By
having the right conversation with a model,it is possible to make it adopt a particular persona, causing it to
act differently.
There is also an idea in AI circles, one yet to be proven, that creating lots of rules for an AI to prevent it
displaying unwanted behaviour can accidentally create a blueprint for a model to act that way. This
potentially leaves the AI easy to be tricked into taking on an evil persona."If you're forcing your model to
be good persona,it somewhat understands what a bad persona is,"says Tagade.
Yinzhen Li at Imperial College London says it is worrying how current models can be misused, but
developers need to weigh such risks with the potential benefits of LLMs."Like drugs, they also have side
effects that need to be controlled,"she says.
28.What does the AI jailbreak refer to?
A.The technique to break restrictions of AI models.
B.The initiative to set hard-coded rules for AI models.
C.The capability of AI models improving themselves.
D.The process of AI models learning-new information.
29.What can we know about the persona modulation?
A.It can help AI models understand emotions.
B.It prevents AI learning via online conversations.
C.It can make AI models adopt a particular persona.
D.It forces AI models to follow only good personas.
30.What is Yinzhen Li's attitude towards LLMs?
A.Unclear.
B.Cautious.
C.Approving.
D.Negative.
31.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A LLMs:Illegal Learning Models B.LLMs:The Latest Advancement
C.AI Jailbreaks:A New Challenge D.AI Jailbreaks:A Perfect Approach

There's a popular saying that if only one voice is allowed to exist;then that one voice must be a lie.
This quote couldn't be more relevant now,as many businesses and platforms are using shady practices to

silence negative feedback and ensure only those voices benefiting them remain. This practice is so-called
"artificial review boosting",and has been influencing objectivity in reviews ever since.
Its origin dates back to the 20th century when businesses would hand out free samples to obtain a better
reputation. However, the practice rises to a new extreme with the emergence of e-commerce platforms.
Many online businesses do whatever it takes to ensure high-rating scores, either through giving bonuses and
rewards to customers who leave a good review or through bothering and threatening those who leave a
negative one. This behavior is not only morally corrupt but also illegal, and it is absurd that many
consumers feel they can't leave negative feedback out of fear that businesses will cause trouble.
It's apparent that this problem is getting out of hand, but how can we fix it?Regulator intervention
would certainly help. There should be a tougher crackdown on illegal practices, and e-commerce platforms
should be required to protect the privacy of their users.Nevertheless, this is just a small part of the changes
needed,as the rating system as a whole needs restructuring. That's because this system rewards dishonest
sellers rather than those selling quality products, and e-commerce platforms, with their profits unaffected,
turn a blind eye to its faults.
Against all odds, honest feedback has persisted and people who voice their true opinions still exist, but
they are becoming rarer. There's an old saying that if you put a frog in boiling water,it will leap out,but if
you cook the frog slowly in warm water,it won't notice being cooked alive. We consumers are just like
frogs-it's easy for us to fight together against terrible acts robbing our freedom, but we often ignore when
the same freedom is gradually taken from us.There will be no grand coup de grace (that ends
honest feedback.Companies will just let it fade away slowly but we mustn't allow that to happen because
consumers play a more important role in keeping honest feedback.
32.What is the main issue discussed in the text?
A.The illegal practices of consumers.
B.The history of e-commerce platforms.
C The benefits of free samples for businesses.
D.The decline of honest feedback due to artificial review boosting.
33.How do businesses ensure high-rating scores according to the text?
A.By improving product quality.
B.By cooperating with regulators.
C.By restructuring the rating system.
D.By rewarding positive reviews and threatening negative reviewers.
34.What does the frog analogy imply about consumers?
A.They are as adaptable as frogs in hot water.
B.They are easily frightened by sudden threats.
C.They fail to notice the gradual loss of their freedom.
D.They should fight against terrible acts immediately.
35.What does the author suggest about the current rating system?
A.It effectively promotes honest sellers.
B.It prioritizes dishonest sellers over honest ones.
C.It has been improved by e-commerce platforms.
D.It is unaffected by consumer feedback and product quality.

Always the outsider?
One of the things I used to fear was being the new girl in the office-in the kitchen making coffee while
the in-crowd chatted about the weekend.I worried that I wasn't good enough or smart enough.36 I'd
struggle for words while trying to look cool.Back at school,I was best friends with Kate and Cathy until we
had to walk across the road in twos, and guess who was left out?I've always been the outsider from school

days to office life.Or is that the story I have told myself?
As in so many areas of life, the only thing you can control is your response.I remind myself of what
Eleanor Roosevelt said:37 The only person making me feel like an outsider is me.These are the
lessons I have learned along the way:
.Starting anywhere new,you just have to find your people, the ones that get you.38It's OK to
take your time and figure out if you're the right fit for each other.Have faith that you will find the right people
for you.
.Very often it's our belief systems that tell us we don't fit in.We are replaying the stories from childhood
and need to rewrite the script().39 When are you assuming that you'll be on your own? What
fears are you projecting onto yourself?
.Practice self-acceptance Remind yourself that it's OK to have a different way of operating in the world.
.40 Sometimes, interactions with random strangers can help us feel more confident in all our
relationships. For example, volunteering can make us feel connected and give us a sense of belonging.
A.Don't charge into friendships,though.
B.Start noticing your patterns of mentality.
C.If I was asked a question,panic would set in.
D.No one can make you feel lower without your agreement.
E.The feeling of being an outsider would force me to shut up.
F.Try doing something to take yourself out of your comfort zone.
G.We all feel a little lost and awkward sometimes-you're not the only one.

When David signed up for Ms.Sandra's"Endangered Traditions"class at Willow High,he didn't
expect this class to be about saving history.Ms.Sandra,one of the few remaining masters of su filindeu,a
handmade Italian pasta(意大利面),explained in the first class that this skill had been practiced for over
300 years and was the rarest of 350 pasta varieties worldwide. She emphasized,Fewer than ten people in
the world still master this skill. If we don't act,the art will disappear."
The students fell silent, realizing the importance of what they were learning. Then, with flour-dusted
hands,Ms.Sandra shifted the mood."Now,let me show you its magic."The students leaned forward as she
started the incredible transformation. She rolled the dough (into a thick rope and then stretched it into
256 perfect strands().The classroom was filled with admiration as the teacher's hands moved gracefully.
For weeks,David and his classmates threw themselves into learning the skill of making su filindeu with
Ms.Sandra's help,but it didn't come casily.The dough kept breaking or sticking together.Sometimes,they
couldn't stretch more than 16 strands.Still, they refused to quit, helping and encouraging each other as they
improved little by little.
Onc afternoon,Ms.Sandra entered the classroom with heavy steps. She sighed."The school board
thinks our su filindeu class isn't practical. They've decided to cancel it next term unless we can prove its
valuc."She added,"It's truc that machines can mass-produce pasta in minutes, but if we only value what's
fast and easy,we lose centuries of knowledge."
A wave of disappointment swept through the classroom. After a moment of silence,David stood up.
"What if we let more people know about it?How about an exhibition?"he suggested. The class lit up with
excitement.Inspired by their reaction,David immediately volunteered to organize the exhibition.Ms.
Sandra watched, proud and hopeful.Perhaps, she thought, they really could work some magic.
