Han Jing’s World
7:00 a.m.
So this is it—senior high school at last! I’m not outgoing so I’m a little anxious right now. I want to make a good first impression. Will I make any friends? What if no one talks to me?
12: 30 p.m.
I just had my first math class at senior high school! The class was difficult, but the teacher was kind and friendly. He even told us a funny story, and everyone laughed so much! I found most of my classmates and teachers friendly and helpful.
5: 32 p.m.
This afternoon, we had our chemistry class in the science lab. The lab is new and the lesson was great, but the guy next to me tried to talk to me the whole time. I couldn’t concentrate on the experiment. I really wanted to tell him to please be quiet and leave me alone!
10:29 p.m.
What a day! This morning, I was worried that no one would talk to me. But I was wrong. I didn’t feel awkward or frightened at all. I miss my friends from junior high school, but I believe I will make new friends here, and there’s a lot to explore at senior high. I feel much more confident than I felt this morning. I think that tomorrow will be a great day!

2 What happened in the afternoon?

B. They had a chemistry class in the classroom.

3. When did the author reflect on his first day in senior high school?
A. 7:00 a.m. B. 12:30 p.m. C. 5:32 p.m. D. 10:29 p.m.

I stood in front of my entire lab and told them,I had made zero progress in the last year. At the graduate program’s annual presentation, highlighting students“ successes, Michelle and I were taking a different approach, sharing our most painful failures. The audience sat in silence, obviously surprised. But we weren’t ashamed. Quite the opposite we were proud to be sharing our full selves and building a base for relationships.
Setbacks are an unavoidable part of graduate school, but too often we try to hide them. By sharing our whole selves, including our failures, we went on to build a deep, meaningful relationship. And we wanted others to experience that openness and support.
We began the workshop by presenting our stories onstage. Then we invited the participants to turn to one another and share their own significant failures. An awkward silence followed, as we had expected, but it only lasted a few seconds. Soon the students jumped into lively conversation.Students even formed larger groups as they realized how many of their colleagues shared the exact struggles they did. Even after the session ended, whispered conversations continued until the next it speaker began his presentation.
From that point forward, every presentation included some mention of the failures that led to the results, It reminded us that behind every impressive result is a person who is just trying his best.Since the workshop, we have noticed a continued change in our classmates. The answers to questions like “How are you doing ? ” are more sincere and less perfunctory and several students have mentioned they feel closer to their classmates.
It’s hard to build a close relationship with someone when all you know about them is their achievements. Talking about failure normalizes it and proves it’s nothing to be ashamed of.
4. What do most graduate school students emphasize in their presentation?
A. Their complaints.
B. Their achievements.
C. Their failures.
D. Their experiments.
5 How does sharing failures benefit students?
A. It stops them from feeling ashamed.
B. It contributes to their school courses.
C. It helps them bond with their classmates.
D. It reduces their fear of presentation.
6. What does the underlined word “perfunctory”in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Rude B. Half-hearted C. Detailed D. Direct
7. What can we know about the participation?
A. They were active for most of the workshops.
B. They kept silent through the workshop.
C. They whispered softly during others’ speeches.
D. They felt shocked by others’ failures.
C
Physical education, or PE, isn’t required for all high school students. In some schools, it isn’t offered for some different reasons. But should high school students have physical education? The answer is certainly “yes”.
Today many people don’t do sports. But as is known to all, doing sports is very important for an adult. Teaching teens the importance of a healthy lifestyle and making fitness plans now can help teens put exercise in the first place as an adult.
High school isn’t that easy. Many students are under a lot of stress. Stress can be harmful to a student’s study and life. Doing sports can help them deal with stress better, helping them live a happier life at school.
The American Heart Association says that 10 million kids and teens suffer from obesity (肥胖症). Teens should get 60 minutes of physical activity per day to control their weight and to help their bones get stronger. The increase in activities that don’t get teens to move around, such as video games and computer activities, means many teens don’t get their required exercise. PE classes act as a public health measure to encourage physical activities and help teens have healthy weights.
Not doing sports increases teens’ risk of developing many diseases. An active lifestyle offers a good way of protection from these health problems. As much as 75 percent of health-care spending goes toward treating medical conditions that can be hindered by lifestyle changes, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.
According to the President’s Council on Fitness,Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN), students who performed five hours of physical activity each week improved their academic (学业的) performance. Students from programs with no physical activity, who used the extra time for classroom study, did not perform better on tests than those who gave up some study time in support of physical education.
8. According to paragraph 2, what does physical education in high school mean?
A. Making teens attach importance to exercise later.
B. Removing the stress faced by teens at school.
C. Getting teens to encourage adults to exercise.
D. Helping teens learn to make good plans.
9. What does the underlined word “hindered” in paragraph 5 mean?
A. Measured. B. Prevented.
C. Shown. D. Caused.
10. According to the PCFSN, doing sports ________.
A. means making students choose between sports and studies
B. helps students make good use of all their time
C. means students adjust to their studies better
D. helps students do better in their studies
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. Why high school students should receive physical education.
B. Why some schools consider physical education important.
C. How schools can help students love doing sports.
D. How high school students can live a better life.
D
Some educators are trying to draw students’ attention with technology, such as educational videos, computer gaming and AI, just to name a few. However, teachers using these tools often struggle to keep students focusing on the materials, competing with the latest social media phenomenon, and can feel limited by using them to get some knowledge across.
Graphic novels (图画小说) offering graphic information married with text provide a means of attracting students in the classroom. Educators have used this method in their teaching. For example instead of filling out problem sheets, students in a math class were asked to read a story called Who Killed Professor X?. In this story, all of the suspects (嫌疑人) are famous mathematicians. As they tried to figure out the connections between the suspects, students often forgot that they were doing math — focusing instead on finding secret details to solve the problem. Although this is just one experience for these students, it improves their confidence and shows them how math can be fun.
Jason Ho, a professor at Marian University, uses Max the Demon Vs Entropy of Doom to teach his physics students about a topic. This topic can be particularly difficult for some students because they can’t physically touch something. Ho said graphic novels can create an attractive learning environment. Most of his students now understand the subject by getting clear explanations for some ideas.
Although the Internet offers a lot of math and physics resources (资源), it can be tiring to search through many hours of videos to find the perfect one to get the “aha!” moment in learning. Graphic novels provide a starting point with different specific topics. Want to learn about programming? Try the Secret Coders series. Need more female role models in science? Astronauts: Women on the Final Frontier could be just what you’re looking for.
With all that graphic novels offer, we believe that the right set of graphic novels can inspire future scientists as much as any single person can.
12. What problem are some teachers faced with?
A. Teaching students to learn self-control.
B. Helping students master high-tech knowledge.
C. Ensuring the teaching effectiveness of using technology.
D. Making all the students take an active part in learning.
13. What is mentioned about graphic novels?
A. They can make learning more enjoyable.
B. They serve the field of math the best.
C. They require students to learn through performance.
D. They lead students to work hard on problem sheets.
14. What is probably Jason Ho’s attitude towards teaching with graphic novels?
A. Surprised. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Concerned.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Graphic novels suitable for students
B. The great popularity of graphic novels
C. How technology influences students’ learning
D. Why we should use graphic novels in teaching

I’d like to share my experiences and suggestions on making new friends. Personally, I’ve always found that being open and approachable is key. I remember when I first moved to a new school, I was quite shy, but I made an effort to join clubs and engage in group activities, which allowed me to meet students with similar interests.
My advice for making new friends is to be genuinely interested in others. Ask questions and listen actively to their responses. This shows that you value their thoughts and opinions, which can help build a strong foundation for friendship. Additionally, be open to new experiences and don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. You never know who you might meet along the way.
