As I was engaged in cutting lettuce in the kitchen, it suddenly occurred to me that I had seen a video on regrowing a whole new lettuce from its stub by placing it in water. Without hesitation, I took out a wide-mouthed mug, put the lettuce stub into it, added some water, and then set it near the window.
On a snowy morning, I spotted the first sign of life. A small leaf began to stretch out from its center, like a tiny green flag of hope — beaten, yet not defeated. Within just a few days, the cuts where I had removed the leaves were no longer visible; the growth was incredibly rapid. When I lifted the blossoming head out of the mug, tiny root threads fell down, reaching for the soil. Lettuce or hope?
Put in the lettuce’s position, I’d likely be doubtful initially, carefully sizing up my new environment before wholeheartedly diving into the process of growing. But this lettuce didn’t need much — just a bit of water and a place near the window is enough to decide it was going to thrive again. It grew in a mug of water, in faith. This is the heart of this lettuce: alive, strong and fearless. It deserved a name .I decided to call it Monty.
Monty wanted to grow, as we all do. I think I gave him a little love and freedom. Those two ingredients were all he needed to return to himself. I see joy in this lettuce. The return to self is always an expression of joy, which is life itself. With the right ingredients, this is the tendency of all living things.
Monty still lives in a mug but I’m going to transplant him outside. He deserves to become his full self. The only problem I see now is my capacity to support Monty. I hope I have enough of a green finger.
I’m surprised to find myself where I am. Maybe Monty is, too. I have the same choice as he does: give in and decay (腐烂),or start again. The prospect of starting again is discouraging. But my lettuce-friend, Monty, leads the way. I can only hope to be as brave.
24. Why did the author put the stub in water?
A. To hope that it would grow. B. To decorate the nice mug
C. To conduct an experiment. D. To remove his bad mood.
25. What is the first sign of life in the author’s eyes?
A. The remaining stub. B. The small leaf.
C. The disappearing cuts. D. The tiny root threads.
26. How would the author feel if in the lettuce’s situation?
A. Hesitant. B. Fearless. C. Confident. D. Annoyed.
27. Which can be a suitable title of the passage?
A. Enjoy your own life to the fullest. B. Believe in yourself when in trouble.
C. Never be afraid to restart yourself. D. Give freedom to the heart in a way.
A 25. B 26. A 27. C

For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any clear winner. Like a border conflict between neighbouring countries, the parent teen war is about boundaries: Where is the line between what I control and what you do?
Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. In part, this is because neither is willing to admit any responsibility for starting it. From the parents’ point of view, the only cause of their fight is their adolescents’ complete unreasonableness. And of course, the teens see it in exactly the same way, except oppositely. Both feel trapped.
In this article, I’ll describe three no win situations that commonly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap. The first no win situation is quarrels over unimportant things. Examples include the colour of the teen’s hair, the cleanliness of the bedroom, the preferred style of clothing, the child’s failure to eat a good breakfast before school, or his tendency to sleep until noon on the weekends. Second, blaming. The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong. Third, needing to be right. It doesn’t matter what the topic is — politics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an egg — the point of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authority — someone who actually knows something —and therefore to command respect. Unfortunately, as long as parents and teens continue to assume that they know more than the other, they’ll continue to fight these battles forever and never make any real progress.
28. Why does the author compare the parent teen war to a border conflict?
A. Both can continue for generations. B. Both are about where to draw the line.
C. Neither has any clear winner. D. Neither can be put to an end.
29. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. The teens accuse their parents of misleading them.
B. The teens blame their parents for starting the conflict.
C. The teens tend to have a full understanding of their parents.
D. The teens agree with their parents on the cause of the conflict.
30. Why do parents and teens want to be right?
A. To give orders to the other. B. To know more than the other.
C. To gain respect from the other. D. To get the other to behave properly.
31. What will the author most probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?
A. Solutions to the parent teen problems. B. Examples of the parent teen war.
C. Causes of the parent teen conflicts. D. Future of the parent teen relationship.
B 29. B 30. C 31. A
根据第一段的“Like a border conflict between neighbouring countries, the parent teen war is about boundaries: Where is the line between what I control and what you do?(就像邻国之间的边境冲突一样,父母与青少年之间的战争是关于界限的:在我能控制的事情和你所做的事情之间的界限在哪里呢?)”
根据第二段的“From the parents’ point of view, the only cause of their fight is their adolescents’ complete unreasonableness. (从父母的角度来看,他们争吵的唯一原因是他们的青少年完全不讲道理)”以及“Both feel trapped.(双方都觉得陷入了困境)”可知,双方陷入了困境的原因是父母认为是青少年的原因导致冲突,而青少年则认为是父母的原因导致冲突,所以划线部分意思是 “青少年指责他们的父母引发了冲突”。故选B。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的“Third, needing to be right. It doesn’t matter what the topic is — politics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an egg — the point of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authority — someone who actually knows something —and therefore to command respect.(第三,需要证明自己是对的。无论话题是什么——政治、物理定律,还是打鸡蛋的正确方法——这些争论的重点是证明你是对的,而对方是错的,因为双方都希望被视为权威——一个真正懂点东西的人——从而赢得尊重)”可知,父母和青少年都想证明自己是对的是为了赢得对方的尊重。故选C。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段的“In this article, I’ll describe three no win situations that commonly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap.(在这篇文章中,我将描述三种通常出现在青少年和父母之间的两败俱伤的情况,然后提出一些摆脱困境的方法)”以及后面描述了三种情况可知,接下来作者很可能会讨论解决父母与青少年问题的方法。故选A。
D
Staying positive through the cold season could be your best defense against getting sick, a new American study suggests.
In an experiment that exposed healthy volunteers to a cold or flu virus, researchers found that people with a generally sunny character were less likely to fail ill.
The findings, published in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, build on evidence that a “positive emotional style” can help ward off the common cold and other illness.
“People with a positive emotional style may have different immune(免疫的)responses to the virus,” explained lead study author Dr Sheldon Cohen of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. “And when they do get a cold, they may interpret their illness as being less severe.”
Cohen and his colleagues has found in a previous study that happier people seemed less likely to catch a cold, but some questions remained as to whether the emotional quality itself had the effect.
For the new study, the researchers had 193 healthy adults complete standard measures of personality qualities, physicals health and “emotional style”.
Those who tended to be happy, energetic and easy–going were judged as having a positive emotional style, while those who were often unhappy, tense and hostile(敌意的)had a negative style.
Afterwards, the researchers gave them nose drops containing either a cold virus or a particular flu virus that causes flu-like symptoms. Over the next six days, the volunteers reported on any aches, pains, sneezing they had. Cohen and his colleagues found that happy people were less likely to develop a cold.
What`s more, when happy folks did develop a cold, their symptoms were less severe than expected based on objective measures.
In contrast, people with negative characters were not at increased risk of developing a cold based on objective measures, though they did tend to get down about their symptoms.
“We find that it`s really positive emotions that have the big effect,” Cohen said, “not the negative ones.”
So can a bad-tempered person fight a cold by deciding to be happy?
32. What does the underlined phrase "ward off" in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Get close to. B. Keep away from.
C. Get used to. D. Go on with.
33. What was the purpose of Cohen's new study?
A. To find effective ways to fight illnesses.
B. To test people's different immune responses to cold virus.
C. To tell differences between happy people and unhappy people.
D. To examine whether health was related to emotional styles,
34. How did Cohen reach his conclusion?
A. By comparing different experimental results.
B. By asking the volunteers to complete n form.
C. By collecting data among people with n cold.
D. By observing the volunteers' symptoms.
35. What can we conclude from the text?
A. Success is the twin of positive spirits.
B. We get more by being more positive.
C. The happier we are, the fewer colds we will suffer.
D. Physical health is more important than mental health.
B 33. D 34. A 35. C
A. Get close to. Keep away from.远离;C. Get used to.习惯于;D. Go on with.继续。根据文章第一句“Staying positive through the cold season could be your best defense against getting sick(在寒冷的季节保持积极的心态可能是你预防生病的最好方法,)”可知,积极的心态可以让人少生病,划线词所在句子“that a “positive emotional style” can help ward off the common cold and other illness.( “积极情绪”有助于ward off感冒和其他疾病。”的主语是a positive emotional style,宾语是the common cold and other illness,可推断,该句中的ward off意为:远离,故选B项。
根据倒数第二段中Cohen 所说的话“We find that it`s really positive emotions that have the big effect(我们发现积极的情绪有很大的影响)”可推断,他们做这项研究的目的就是为了检查健康是否与情绪类型有关。
根据倒数第五段中“Cohen and his colleagues found that happy people were less likely to develop a cold.(科恩和他的同事们发现,快乐的人不容易患感冒。)”和倒数第四段“What`s more, when happy folks did develop a cold, their symptoms were less severe than expected based on objective measures.(更重要的是,当快乐的人们真的患了感冒时,根据客观测量他们的症状比预期的要轻。)”可知,他们观察到了快乐的人们对感冒的反应;又根据倒数第三段“In contrast, people with negative characters were not at increased risk of developing a cold based on objective measures, though they did tend to get down about their symptoms.(相比之下,根据客观测量,性格消极的人患感冒的风险并不会增加,尽管他们确实倾向于对自己的症状表达不满。)”

Monty still lives in a mug, but I’m going to transplant him outside.
