The cultural roots and economic boom of China’s burgeoning matcha industry
In an era increasingly focused on health and wellness, matcha's refreshing, subtly bitter flavor has propelled it to popularity. It's now a sought-after ingredient across diverse sectors, from beverages to baked goods, ice creams, snacks and restaurant cuisine.
A substantial market exists for matcha, which is powdered green tea traditionally consumed across Northeast Asia. This growing market is being tapped by Jiangkou County in Tongren City, Guizhou Province. In 2024, the county's matcha sales surpassed 1,200 tons, generating a sales revenue of 286 million yuan ($40 million). Its products are now exported to overseas markets including Japan, the United States and France.
Chinese matcha is rapidly gaining global prominence. According to the White Paper on the Development of the Matcha Industry, released by the China Center for Information Industry Development, China has become the world's largest matcha producer and consumer. Data from the white paper, released at the 2023 Fanjing Mountain Matcha Conference in Tongren, indicate that in 2020, China's matcha production reached 3,916 tons and consumption reached 3,966 tons, both accounting for over 50 percent of global totals.
It's estimated that China's total matcha output will exceed 5,000 tons in 2025. Guizhou's matcha output is expected to represent a quarter of the national total and be exported to over 40 countries and regions.
Rapid rise
While Tongren has a long history of tea cultivation, it is only in recent years that the city has become recognized as China's matcha capital.
Lan Fangqiang, Deputy General Manager of Guizhou Gui Tea Group Co. Ltd. (Gui Tea Group), the largest tea manufacturer in Guizhou, has witnessed the rise of Tongren's matcha industry. Lan told *China Newsweek* that the domestic tea market has been extremely competitive over the past decade. Although Tongren boasts a long history of tea growing, standing out in the fierce competition posed a significant challenge.
After conducting extensive market research, we discovered that matcha holds immense market potential. Especially after communicating with customers from the U.S., we became even more determined to develop matcha products. We found a substantial market for matcha not only in China but also in the U.S. Furthermore, producing matcha allows us to avoid the highly competitive green tea and black tea sectors, Lan explained.
Meng Zude, Chairman of Gui Tea Group, told Farmers' Daily that matcha caters to young people's pursuit of trends. Many young people lack the time to visit teahouses or slowly brew a cup of tea in the office. But, matcha can be easily added directly to a variety of products for consumption.

Lan Fangqiang from Gui Tea Group said, "After market research, we found matcha has huge potential. 8. ____(it) allows us to avoid the fierce competition in the green tea and black tea sectors." Meng Zude, chairman of Gui Tea Group, added that matcha is popular among young people 9. ____they are busy and prefer convenient products. With matcha, they can easily add it to various foods for consumption. This trend 10. ____(certain) boosts the growth of China's matcha industry.
1. has gained(谓语动词·现在完成时)
2. generating(非谓语动词·现在分词)
解析 :句子主干“the county's matcha sales surpassed 1,200 tons”(该县抹茶销量超1200吨)结构完整,“generate a sales revenue of 286 million yuan”(创造2.86亿元营收)是销量增长自然带来的结果,且“generate”与逻辑主语“sales”为主动关系,故用现在分词“generating”。
3. and(并列连词)
考点 :并列结构连接,“including A, B and C”(包含A、B和C)。
解析 :句中“Japan, the United States”与“France”是并列的国家名称,均属于“exported to many countries”(出口的国家)范畴,需用并列连词“and”连接,符合英语中多个并列成分最后两个用“and”连接的规则。
4. the(冠词·定冠词)
5. will exceed(谓语动词·一般将来时)
6. be exported(谓语动词·被动语态)
考点 :语态判断,结合“be expected to do”结构。
7. which(定语从句·关系代词)
8. It(代词·人称代词主格)
9. because(从属连词·原因状语从句)
解析 :前半句“matcha is popular among young people”(抹茶受年轻人欢迎)是结果,后半句“they are busy and prefer convenient products”(他们忙碌且偏好便捷产品)是原因,需用原因状语从句连接词“because”,明确逻辑关系。
10. certainly(副词·修饰动词)
