A
Four Must-Eat Chicago Sandwiches
On a hit list of Chicago’s must-eat dishes, you’ll find various meals on bread. Let’s take a look at four of them.
Italian beef sandwich
Known around the city simply as a “beef”, this giant sandwich piles thinly sliced roast beef and green peppers on brown French bread, which has roots in the Italian American community in 1938. Dozens of Italian beef joints now exist in Chicago area, including Johnnie’s Beef in Elmwood Park and Plant-Based Italian Beefless Sandwich. The latter is popular among people who favor vegetable products.
Italian sub
Italian subs exist all over the country with different names. Chicago’s version originates from Vincenzo Graziano’s first sandwich store in 1922, who came to Chicago in 1905 without any money. At J.P. Graziano, now managed by Graziano’s great-grandson Jim Graziano, the Italian sub features hot pork sausage, plus tomato, red wine vinegar, which adds a deeper, richer flavor.
Reuben
Made with roasted beef, Swiss cheese and salted vegetables, the Reuben was invented in the Blackstone Hotel in Omaha, Nebraska in 1925 and won the National Sandwich Idea Contest in 1956. At Manny’s, you can taste the classic Reuben served with the award-winning roasted beef, which is the restaurant’s signature.
Chicago-style hot dog
Dating back to 1929, a Chicago Red Hot is made up of nine ingredients (原料). They include an all-beef frank, a steamed bread roll and a salad bar of toppings. As one of the city’s most popular spots for a Chicago dog, the family-owned roadside stand, Superdawg Drive-In, has served hot dogs since 1948. If you order a Chicago dog, the really critical detail is that you can’t see tomato source, which would ruin the perfect balance of the food.
21. Among the four must-eat Chicago sandwiches, which one has the longest history?
A. Italian beef sandwich. B. Italian sub.
C. Reuben. D. Chicago-style hot dog.
22. In which restaurant can you taste an award-winning sandwich?
A. Johnnie’s Beef in Elmwood Park. B. J.P. Graziano.
C. Manny’s. D. Superdawg Drive-In.
23. Which section of a magazine is this passage probably taken from?
A. Transport. B. Health. C. Travel. D. Science.

Astrid Poghosyan, a 28-year-old Armenian violinist, now working as a helper to the president of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, a celebrated orchestra in China’s most populous (人口稠密的) city, has achieved her dream as a musician.
This summer, she has been busy making preparations for a series of in-person and online music events and cultural exchange programs, including a music festival in Shanghai and a live-streamed (直播的) international violin competition. Poghosyan said she always puts all her energy into the projects in which she is involved, whether they are offline or online events, as she believes that every little effort will help her realize her music-related dreams.
Having studied and worked in China for 12 years, Poghosyan has now become a real China hand. Such a multicultural background has certainly helped her excel at her current job. “Poghosyan plays a very special role in our orchestra,” said Zhou Ping, president of the orchestra. “She has lived in China for long and loves the Chinese culture, and she knows how to use the advantage of a multicultural background in her work.”
For Poghosyan, the life she now leads is quite different from when she first came to China in 2009 to study violin at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. Then just 16, Poghosyan couldn’t speak a word of Chinese. “And my high-school-level English wasn’t of much help at that time,” she said. “So I decided to learn Chinese to solve the communication problem.”
As she gradually immersed (沉浸) herself in the Chinese language and culture, she also started to make Chinese friends and explore the exciting city life of Shanghai. “Since I first came to Shanghai, I have always been impressed by the kindness and friendliness of the people here,” she said, “Their smiles have made me feel the warmth of the city.”
24. What does Poghosyan do in China at present?
A. A hostess of a music festival. B. A president of an orchestra.
C. A judge of some music events. D. An assistant of Zhou Ping.
25. How does Zhou Ping feel about Poghosyan’s performance?
A. Disappointed. B. Inspired. C. Worried. D. Satisfied.
26. What was Poghosyan’s main challenge when she first arrived in China in 2009?
A. Her poor violin skills. B. The unfamiliar city life.
C. The language barrier. D. The lack of musical events.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. An Armenian’s exciting academic life in Shanghai.
B. The advantage of multicultural background in work.
C. An Armenian musician realizing her dream in China.
D. The love brought to an Armenian by Chinese people.

We have more ways to access music than at any time in history and a whole world of unfamiliar styles to explore. The thrill of discovering new songs and new sounds can enrich people of all ages. Except, most of the time, it doesn’t. Our willingness to explore new, unfamiliar music declines with age.
Academics have coined the term “open-earedness” to describe this phenomenon. Until around the age of 11, children are generally happy to engage with unfamiliar music. Early adolescence sees a reduction in open-earedness, but is accompanied by an intense increase in interest in music more generally. Open-earedness increases slightly during young adulthood, and then declines as we age.
A major study involving more than 250,000 participants confirmed these changing behaviors. It also showed that the significance we give to music after adolescence declines, and the amount of music we listen to reduces from a high point of 20% of our waking time during adolescence, to 13% in adulthood.
Researchers have different theories to account for these trends. One explanation for age-based reduction in music consumption simply assumes that responsibility-burdened adults may have less free time at their disposal (自由支配) to explore their musical interests than younger people.
Some interpret the observed decline in music engagement in terms of psychosocial maturation. Adolescents use music as an identity marker and engage with it to navigate social circles. Adults have developed personalities and established social groups. As such, drivers to engage with new music are lessened.
Some researchers argue that we shouldn’t use a person’s age to predict if their musical taste will stay the same, without first thinking about how we enjoy and use music at different stages of our lives. Teenagers tend to be very aware of what they are listening to. Adults who use music as motivation or accompaniment for activities such as exercise or household chores may be less conscious of the extent to which they actually do listen to new music.
28. What does the term “open-earedness” refer to in the passage?
A. The ability to play music.
B. The willingness to explore new music.

B. It increases from childhood to adulthood.
C. It peaks during adolescence and then decreases.
D. It gradually declines from childhood to adulthood.
30. What factor is suggested as one cause for a reduced interest in new music as people age?

When babies are exposed to a variety of faces, they become more adept in recognizing and appreciating diversity, which can help reduce biases and prejudices as they grow. This is according to neuroscientist Saskia Koch of the Donders Institute and Radboud University.
Koch conducted her research using data from the Nijmegen longitudinal study. This study follows young people from infancy (婴儿期). First, the researchers looked at how frequently the teenagers had attended day care as babies. Then, the same youngsters were assigned the duty of playing a game when they reached the age of 17. In the game, they had to work with another person they couldn’t see. Both players had the same goal: find an object on a gameboard. Only the 17-year-old knew where the item was. The 17-year-olds had to communicate this location to each other without using words. They had to design communicative patterns that would assist the other person in locating the object. This could be accomplished, for example, by performing specific movements.
The 17-year-olds were informed they were playing with a 5-year-old in one game and an adult in another, despite the fact that it was the same individual each time. Initially, the 17- year-olds adjusted their communicative patterns when they thought they were interacting with the child by placing more emphasis on their movements. How quickly they abandoned this pattern depended on how much time they spent in day care. 17-year-olds who had come into contact with many different people as infants were more likely to get over a stereotype They found out in the interaction that the “child” was also very good and then based their play on that.
According to the researcher this means that babies who have had more diverse social interactions can more easily let go of a stereotype later in life. They are more sensitive to social interaction and can more quickly let go of the image they have in their minds of their peers. Koch says, “Gaining many diverse social experiences early in life allows us to adapt better to the needs of our partners in social interaction. ”
32. What does the underlined word “adept” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Forgetful. B. Skillful. C. Interested. D. Disappointed.
33. What was the purpose of the game in the study?
A. To confirm the data from the Nijmegen study.
B. To test the impacts of early social interactions.
C. To enhance the youngsters’ cooperative ability.
D. To assess the effects of communicative patterns.
34. How did the 17-year-olds first respond to the “child” in the game?
A. They changed their fixed idea of a child. B. They adjusted the time spent on the game.
C. They performed more specific movements. D. They employed verbal interactive patterns.
35. What helps babies with future social contacts according to Koch?
A. Interacting with various people. B. Engaging with diverse peers.
C. Adapting to the needs of partners. D. Letting go of the old images.

Review Our Worries
We spend a lot of our lives worrying, but there’s one basic thing we almost never remember to do.____36____For example, one week, we might be worried about running out of money, the next of having offended a friend, and the third about being brought down by a rumour on social media. The worries go on and on, shifting unstoppably from one target to another.____37____
What we seldom spend time doing is pausing to compare the scale of the worry with what actually happened in the end. We are too taken up with the next worry to return for a composed review.
However, if we force ourselves to perform one, a strange discovery is likely to dawn on us. ____38____We almost lost our minds to worry, but we didn’t run out of money in the end, our friend wasn’t offended, and so on.____39____Mark Twain’s famous saying comes to mind: “I have lived through many disasters, only a few of which actually happened.”
____40____If we got it so wrong in the past, we’re highly likely to get it wrong now too. Of course, we’re convinced that this is really and truly the end, but such a certainty was with us on many other situations which we appear to have sailed through well enough.
Perhaps the world is not quite as awful as we assume. Perhaps most of the drama is ultimately unfolding in a place we need to explore and heal as fast as we can: our own minds.
A. Our worries are nearly always out of line with reality.
B. They ruin our precious time on Earth in the process.
C. Ignore our worries and focus on more productive things.
D. Go back and check how our worries matched up to reality.
E. We might say that only 1% of our worries truly become awful.
F. Our worries are caused by external factors beyond our control.
G. We should use the data about the unreliability of our fears as a guide to the future.

66. When the two lovers, Ling shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, first met, the music is light and pleasant, as if ________ (whisper) to the audience.
67. ________ his hearing loss, he was determined to find a way to continue living a life full of music.
Despite
由“his hearing loss, he was determined to find a way to continue living a life full of music”可知,句子表示“尽管听力受损,但他决心找到一种方式,继续过充满音乐的生活”,空格处意为“尽管”,空后是名词性短语,因此空格处是despite,位于句首,首字母大写,故填Despite。
68. Since that day, Beethoven’s Symphony No.9 has become one of the most famous and _______(treasure) pieces in the history of classical music.
69. Monet and Renoir, along with other like-minded artists, ________(seek) liberation from the rules of the old style.(所给词的适当形式填空)
70. Everyday subject matter was the main focus of their works, as opposed to the history paintings that _______ (dominate) European art.

Dear Jenny,
I really like the idea of adding a new column to our English broadcasting program. From my perspective, American country music, compared with Chinese folk music, is more suitable for this new part, and the reasons are as follows.
Initially, American country music itself is beautiful, for its simple and catchy tunes make it easy for the listeners to follow along, even for those with basic English skills, and its lyrics often leave us in deep thought. Additionally, American country music provides a platform for us to have a deep insight into authentic American culture, especially about their unique music.
To sum up, I prefer American country music to Chinese folk music. Hope my view can be taken into your favorable consideration.
Yours,
Li Hua

When my 10-year-old brother, Ryan, announced he would be the host at the school concert, I did my best to sound excited. “I can’t wait to see it,” I said. The theme was Songs From Every Continent, and the kids would dress up like animals.
“I’m going to have my own microphone and everything” Ryan yelled. He couldn’t wait for the concert to begin, but for me, it was challenging. Their school concerts were long, the chairs were uncomfortable, and I knew Ryan didn’t need me there for moral support. Still, it was my sisterly duty to attend. Thankfully, Ryan couldn’t read my mind.
Before the concert even started, I already wanted to run away. “God, help me get through this,” I begged. The lights dimmed (变暗). Ryan took the stage, wearing what looked like a kangaroo. He picked up his microphone and said with a perfect accent, “Evening, mates.” He commented on the performances without a bit of nerves, just as I knew he would be. The part seemed perfect for him. No surprise there, but we were only halfway through the program!
“Let’s clap for the next group,” Ryan said. A class of younger students stepped up to the stage, and it took a while for them to gather. I shifted in my seat, barely standing the concert any more. Then one student, called Michael, wearing monkey ears, shyly made his way to the standing microphone. I saw his lips move, but whatever he said had come out as a whisper.
The boy looked confused. He tried again, but it was no use. Something was wrong with the microphone The boy hung his head, his monkey ears down- turned, and I wondered if he was crying. Everyone around me looked uncomfortable for the boy, but no one knew what to do. It never occurred to me that the incident would show me more about Ryan.

“It’s okay, Michael,” a voice rang out. To my surprise, it was Ryan speaking confidently through the microphone. He moved quickly to the trembling boy’s side, calling him “a brave little monkey” and comforting him gently. Then Ryan handed his microphone to Michael and gave him a thumb-up. Michael collected himself. Taking a deep breath, he signaled his classmates to restart their song. With the last note fading away, cheers erupted instantly, washing away the earlier tension. Something changed secretly.
I thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the concert. No longer shifting about in the chair, I became absorbed in every performance. When looking at Ryan, I saw a more capable and confident boy on the stage. The concert flowed smoothly afterward. When Ryan finally announced the final, I rushed to the backstage with joyful excitement. I hugged him tightly, telling him I was so proud for his quick reaction and compassion. What a wonderful night!

Reuben
Made with roasted beef Swiss cheese and salted vegetables, the Reuben was invented in the Blackstone Hotel in Omaha, Nebraska in 1925 and won the National Sandwich Idea Contest in 1956.

C The language barrier. D. The lack of musical events.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. An Armenian’s exciting academic life in Shanghai.
B. The advantage of multicultural background in work.
C. An Armenian musician realizing her dream in China.
D. The love brought to an Armenian by Chinese people.
C
C. The interest in music during adolescence.
D. The significance of music in daily life.
29. According to the study, how does the amount of music listened to change as we age?
A. It remains consistent throughout life.
B. It increases from childhood to adulthood.
C. It peaks during adolescence and then decreases.
D. It gradually declines from childhood to adulthood.
30. What factor is suggested as one cause for a reduced interest in new music as people age?
A. An increase in hearing sharpness.
B. Less spare time due to responsibilities.
C. An intense decrease in interest in music.
D. Changes in personality and social groups.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Music Consumption: A Lifelong Journey.
B. Factors Influencing Music Engagement in Adults.
C. Adolescents and Music: Identity and Exploration.
D. Decline of Open-Earedness: Age Affects Music Exploration.

He tried again but it was no use. Something was wrong with the microphone The boy hung his head, his monkey ears down- turned, and I wondered if he was crying. Everyone around me looked uncomfortable for the boy, but no one knew what to do. It never occurred to me that the incident would show me more about Ryan.
注意:
1.续写词数应150左右;
“It’s okay, Michael,” a voice rang out.
