The Future of Clean Energy in Homes
Heating, cooling, and powering homes contribute significantly to global CO₂ emissions. As nations strive to reduce their carbon footprints, residential energy use — responsible for nearly 20% of energy-related emissions — poses unique challenges. Below is the 2022 breakdown of household emissions by source.
ELECTRICITY 52%
HEATING 28%
COOLING 12%
APPLIANCES 6%
LIGHTING 2%
Clean energy solutions for homes must be affordable, efficient, and adaptable to diverse climates. While technologies vary, here are key innovations driving the shift toward sustainability.
HEAT PUMPS — Efficient Heating/Cooling
Replacing gas boilers, electric heat pumps transfer warmth from air or ground, cutting heating emissions by 50%. Hybrid models, hopefully, might be able to work in sub-zero temperatures in the near future.
SMART GRIDS (电网) — Dynamic Electricity Management
AI-powered grids optimize energy use, storing surplus solar power during peak hours and reducing reliance on fossil-fuel backups.
SOLAR PANELS — Rooftop Revolution
Solar energy is the most accessible renewable source for households. Advances in photovoltaic cells have cut costs by 80% since 2010, making them viable in numerous regions.
WIND TURBINES — Community Microgrids
Small-scale turbines (涡轮机) in windy areas can power neighborhoods, though land use debates persist. “The scale of this transition is staggering,” says Dr. Elena Torres, a climate scientist at MIT. Residential renewables like solar and heat pumps could meet 90% of global household demand by 2050 — but only if investments triple within this decade. Recent studies show that every $1 invested in green homes today saves $5 in future climate adaptation costs. This isn’t just an environmental imperative; it’s economically inevitable.
1. Which two categories combined account for over three-quarters of total household emissions?
A. Electricity and Heating. B. Heating and Cooling.
C. Appliances and Lighting. D. Cooling and Appliances.
2. Which technology is highlighted as cost-effective for diverse climates?
A. Heat pumps. B. Smart grids. C. Solar panels. D. Wind turbines.
3. What does Dr. Torres emphasize about the energy transition?
A. The dominance of gas boilers. B. The increase in solar efficiency.
C. The need for higher investment. D. The breakthrough in heat pump technology.
B
This spring break, my 12-year-old disabled son rode his first roller coaster. He had so much fun!
The roller coaster was the Slinky Dog Dash at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida. Disney World is one of the only mainstream amusement parks that will let my son go on rides. He has cerebral palsy (脑瘫) and is unable to sit independently. Because of his disabilities, most parks won’t let him go on their roller coasters.
The experience at Disney was special for my son, but also special for the rest of my family of five. Splitting up (分开) is something we encounter daily. My son goes to a special school in a town 20 minutes from our home. There are almost no activities he can enjoy at our local parks and recreation program, and he spends a few afternoons a week in physical treatment.
We also divide and conquer when we are out in public. Many buildings have an accessible entrance that is further away, so we split up to avoid dragging everyone around the back. The same goes for hunting for a vacant elevator in a big building or a busy mall.
Accessible seating in theaters often only has room for one companion, so we sit in separate rows or further apart from one another. On occasion, an entire building or part of a building is just completely inaccessible, so we split up or pass on an activity we planned to enjoy because we literally can’t get everyone in the door.
Many people assume that tending to my son’s day-to-day needs is the hardest part of being his caregiver. But finding resources and places that will include him is the real challenge. Disney World is one of the few, if not the only place, where everyone in my family feels equally important. Now that my son has successfully ridden his first roller coaster, I would love for him to go on the same types of rides at an amusement park in the local community, but I know it’s not an option. For now, anyway, I’m holding our recent experience close to my heart.
4. Why was the experience at Disney special for the author’s son?
A. He was permitted to ride a roller coaster.
B. It was his first trip to an amusement park.
C. He was allowed to go on rides independently.
D. It was his first vacation with his entire family.
5. Which of the following best describes Disney World?
A. Romantic. B. Popular. C. Inclusive. D. Secure.
6. Why does the author mention theaters in the fifth paragraph?
A. To criticize the limited space of theaters.
B. To stress the importance of theaters to the disabled.
C. To complain about the lack of accessible seating in public.
D. To illustrate accessibility barriers in public that separate her family.
7. What does the author find most difficult when caring for her son?
A. Managing her son’s daily needs.
B. Balancing her son and the rest of her family.
C. Finding disability-friendly places and activities.
D. Persuading his son to fit into the local community.
C
Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) , a natural compound found in foods like broccoli and avocado, has emerged as a promising anti-aging supplement (补充物质). As people age, their levels of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD⁺) decline. Since NMN helps boost NAD⁺ production, scientists believe it could slow age-related decline.
The current global aging crisis urges studies in this field. With the population over 65 expected to double by 2050, age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s diseases and diabetes have gone up, leading to heavy global socioeconomic and medical burden. Therefore, age management medical practices have been mushrooming in the world for recommending nutritional supplements. And NMN serves as a direct boost to NAD⁺, a vital molecule (分子) that fuels cells with energy and repairs DNA damage.
Many studies have been done to explore NMN’s anti-aging effects in various cells and tissues, most of which were done in animal models. For example, according to Fu and Zhang, on an experiment of using NMN in preparation of anti-aging health-care products or drugs on aged mice, it was found that the NMN administration could extend the life span of mice by 29%. Fang investigated that the hearing loss happened to mice could be prevented by improving cochlear (耳蜗) health and restoring outer hair cell loss. Wang also indicated that the use of NMN contributed to the restoration of learning and cognition in rats.
However, most evidence comes from lab studies, and human trials remain limited. Also, in terms of intake, early small-scale studies suggest NMN is safe in doses up to 500 mg per day, but experts caution that unregulated high doses (such as 1, 000 mg capsules) could be risky.
Alarmingly, despite the lack of comprehensive human data, NMN supplements are already widely marketed. Dr. Jun Lu, a leading researcher, warns: “Nature perfected these systems over millions of years — lab-made versions still can’t fully copy them.” While NMN holds promise, more research is needed to confirm its safety and effectiveness in humans.
8. Why are scientists interested in NMN?
A. Because it is a natural compound found in common foods.
B. Because it is the only effective anti-aging supplement available.
C. Because it may contribute to slowing aging by boosting NAD⁺ levels.
D. Because it has been proven to cure Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.
9. The underlined word “administration” in Paragraph 3 most likely means _________.
A. government B. interruption
C. injection D. accommodation
10. Which of the following words best describes the effectiveness of NMN on humans?
A. Revolutionary. B. Promising.
C. Invasive. D. Unproven.
11. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Animal Studies Prove NMN’s Anti-Aging Effects
B. NMN’s Potential and Risks: A Scientific Perspective
C. How NMN Supplements Are Dominating the Market
D. NMN: The Miracle Anti-Aging Solution Finally Found
D
Whether you’re looking for a job, a house, or a romantic partner, there’s an app for that. But as people increasingly turn to digital platforms in search of opportunity, Daniela Saban, an associate professor of operations, information, and technology at Stanford Graduate School of Business, says it’s time to take a critical look at the role of algorithms (算法). She explores how properly designed algorithms can improve the fairness and effectiveness of matching processes.
Saban has focused much of her research on what she calls “matching markets,” and she’s been particularly fascinated by online dating. In one study, she and several coauthors partnered with a major U.S. dating platform to explore how updates to the app’s algorithm could improve outcomes for romantic hopefuls looking to spark new connections.
Analyzing data from the app, Saban developed a model that not only prioritized potential matches based on a user’s preferences but also took into account the likelihood that the person on the other side of the potential match would be interested. “I not only want to show you people that you will like, I also want to show you people that will like you back,” Saban notes. Factoring in users’ history, activity levels, and this two-sided approach to preference led to a substantial increase in matches during field experiments in Texas. “Our algorithm increased the number of matches by 27% in Houston and by over 37% in Austin,” Saban says.
Similarly, when working with the volunteer matching platform VolunteerMatch, Saban identified an imbalance in how volunteer opportunities were being distributed. Some organizations were receiving an overwhelming number of sign-ups, sometimes even more than they needed, while others struggled to attract any volunteers at all. By adjusting the search algorithm to consider the number of volunteers an organization needs and has already received, Saban and her team were able to ensure a more reasonable distribution of volunteers across opportunities.
The technical details of algorithms may be complicated, but our commitment to fairness and equity doesn’t have to be. If we want algorithms to work for good, we need to make conscious choices about how we design them.
12. How do people search for opportunities nowadays?
A By learning algorithms.
B. By making use of online tools.
C. By developing critical thinking.
D. By analyzing the matching processes.
13. What do we know about the model Saban developed for the dating app?
A. It has attracted more users to the app.
B It makes a user’s preferences a top priority.
C. It focuses on two-sided preference matching.
D. It presents more potential matches to the users.
14. On what basis did Saban adjust the algorithm of VolunteerMatch?
A. The preferences of the volunteers.
B. The popularity of the organizations.
C. A match between volunteer and organization types.
D. A balance between the demand and supply of volunteers.
15. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Power of Digital Matchmaking
B. A New Era of Opportunity Searching
C. Designing Algorithms for Better Matches
D. Volunteering Better with Equal Distribution

We’ve all been in that situation — you’ve sent a message and it marked “read”, yet you haven’t gotten a reply. What’s going on? Although being left on “read” can be puzzling, it’s also pretty common. ____16____ Here are some suggestions.
Assume the best. Remind yourself that the person is likely just occupied. Think about whether you actually know their schedule. There might be some time commitments you’re not familiar with. Here are a few other reasons for a delayed response. ____17____ They set their phone aside to concentrate on work or studies. They unintentionally neglected to reply. Perhaps they thought about what to say but didn’t actually send a text.
Resist the temptation to double-text. ____18____ If you send many follow-up texts, it’ll be difficult for them to keep track and they may feel pressured. Let them have just one message to respond to — the other person will probably appreciate your tolerance.
Read over your previous messages. Check if there are any confusing texts that you need to clarify. It’s fine if you review your message again and realize that it might have been a bit confusing — it happens! ____19____
____20____ Keep it out of sight and get some peace of mind. Don’t let it annoy or puzzle you. If you stop thinking about any alerts, you’ll be able to brainstorm new ways to spend your time.
A. Put your phone down.
B. Fix your attention closely on text responses.
C. They want to give you a more detailed reply but can’t do it at the moment.
D. You can stop the situation from bothering you until you hear back.
E. Think about why being left on “read” makes you annoyed or confused.
F. You might feel relieved when you find something that’s easy to misinterpret.
G Let them have some room so they can get a chance to reply.

My two best friends and I were skateboarding in the park near my house. Ollie suddenly skidded to a stop and told us to look at a poster. “The Harvest Fair sounded cool,” he exclaimed. Mareya agreed while pointing to a picture of a pie, adding that there was also a pie contest. “But 50 bucks a ticket? Too expensive,” I said. We all sighed.
Then we picked up our skateboards and jogged down the sidewalk to the market my parents owned. Just at that moment, my dad’s old business partner Isaac walked in. Isaac greeted my dad cheerfully and explained that he was producing an event at the park, asking if he could hang a poster there. My dad immediately agreed. When my dad inquired about the event, Isaac said it was the Harvest Fair and generously offered some free passes for our family.
I couldn’t contain my excitement and squealed in disbelief. Mareya asked in surprise if it was really the Harvest Fair. Ollie gasped in amazement, questioning whether the tickets were truly free.
After Isaac left, my dad said since there were five people in our family but six tickets, we would have to find someone else who wanted to go to the fair. Mareya and Ollie both wanted to go. It took me exactly one second to go from very happy to very confused. There was no way I could choose one friend without hurting the other’s feelings.
My dad took a quarter out of his pocket. “There’s only one fair way to make a tough choice like this: a good old-fashioned coin toss. Ollie and Mareya, how about one of you calls heads, one of you calls tails, and whoever guesses right gets the extra ticket?” But before anyone could answer, Mrs. Nishikawa, my awesome 80-year-old neighbor, approached us. “I just saw the poster in your window,” she said. “How I used to love going to fairs! But it’s hard for me to get around now, and tickets cost so much these days.”
注意: 1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
That’s when Ollie got a twinkle in his eye.

【答案】4. A 5. C 6. D 7.

D. NMN: The Miracle Anti-Aging Solution Finally Found
【答案】8. C 9. C 10. D 11. B

A. By learning algorithms.
B. By making use of online tools.
C. By developing critical thinking.
D. By analyzing the matching processes.
13. What do we know about the model Saban developed for the dating app?
A. It has attracted more users to the app.
B. It makes a user’s preferences a top priority.
C. It focuses on two-sided preference matching.
D. It presents more potential matches to the users.
14. On what basis did Saban adjust the algorithm of VolunteerMatch?
A. The preferences of the volunteers.
B. The popularity of the organizations.
C. A match between volunteer and organization types.
D. A balance between the demand and supply of volunteers.
15. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Power of Digital Matchmaking
B. A New Era of Opportunity Searching
C. Designing Algorithms for Better Matches
D. Volunteering Better with Equal Distribution
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. C

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
注意: 1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
That’s when Ollie got a twinkle in his eye.

Still, I felt bad for my friends and my mom came up with a great plan.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
That’s when Ollie got a twinkle in his eye. He leaned toward Mareya and murmured that maybe they could give the ticket to Mrs. Nishikawa instead. Mareya’s eyes softened as she turned to me, whispering that it would mean so much to her. I felt a lump in my throat as I quietly relayed their idea to my dad. “Well, neighbor, we just so happen to have an extra ticket to that fair! How would you like to join our family when we go?” my dad asked with a grin. “Really? I’d like that very much!” Mrs. Nishikawa’s voice wavered with emotion as she accepted. Just then, my dad winked at Ollie and Mareya. It was his quiet way of saying “Thanks for being generous and thoughtful.”
Still, I felt bad for my friends, and my mom came up with a great plan. “Why not host a mini fair at home?” she suggested. The next weekend, Ollie, Mareya, and I had our own Harvest Fair party. We decorated the backyard with fairy lights and handmade banners. My mom helped us set up wacky games and baked an “award-winning” pie. Laughing as we shared the pie, I realized this was even better than the real fair. Ollie grinned, “Who needs tickets when we’ve got creativity?” Mareya nodded, adding, “And best friends!” That day, we learned joy isn’t about where you go, but who you’re with — and a little kindness makes it sweeter.
