Sofie Roux, 26, was on a work trip to Malawi with her physician parents in 2019 when she befriended a girl named Faith. Their relation was close over their love of art and their future dreams: Roux wanted to be an architect, while Faith hoped to be an animator But Faith’s school had no electricity — let alone the technology to teach computer animation.
Roux, who grew up spending her summers in Africa, had raised funds for computers to make STEAM — science, technology, engineering, arts, and math — education in Africa more accessible. The lack of electricity at Faith’s school showed another difficulty. At 16, Roux found herself in her backyard designing and building a computer lab inside a recycled shipping container. She named the creation a BloomBox Roux filled the lab with computing equipment, and then topped it with a solar roof for dependable power.
In the summer of 2021, Roux took it to Faith’s high school in Blantyre, Malawi. Once introduced, the BloomBox caught the attention of the Malawi Ministry of Education. “They want everyone to be very technologically literate (通晓的) by 2063,” Roux says, “and that starts with making sure that young people have contact with technology and creative maker spaces.” The ministry agreed to a plan to build 70 more labs across the country.
To enlarge, however, Roux and a team of 30 professionals needed to solve problems of productivity, safety, and transportation to faraway communities. BloomBox Design Labs formed in 2023 as a public benefit company after moving all production to Malawi and South Africa to bring down costs, reduce transport time, and hire local workers.
Today, Roux’s friend Faith studies art and design at the University of Malawi. When Roux finishes the 70 planned labs, they will reach 200,000 students so that their love of learning can bloom.
24. Why did Roux build the first BloomBox?
A. To provide free computers for all African students.
B. To enable technology education at Faith’s electricity-free school.
C. To support her parents’ medical work in Malawi.
D. To promote art education in developing countries.
25. What does the “creative maker spaces” mentioned in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Professional animation production studios.
B. Government-funded technology research centers.
C. Spaces that foster innovation and hands-on learning.
D. Traditional classrooms with upgraded equipment.
26. What challenged Roux’s team when expanding the BloomBox project?
A. Shortage of computing equipment in Malawi.
B. Disagreement with the Ministry on lab locations.
C. Local resistance to using recycled shipping containers.
D. Issues with productivity, safety, and remote transportation.
27. What is the main purpose of the BloomBox project according to the text?
A. To support Faith’s specific dream of becoming an animator,
B. To make technology and STEAM learning accessible to African youth.
C. To turn recycled shipping containers into profitable education facilities.
D To help Malawi become a leader in African STEAM education by 2063.

How do you beat the summer heat? If you’re like most people, you turn the air conditioning on when it’s the hottest time of the day. But what if you could use nonpeak (非高峰的) electrical hours and store the cold to use the next day? This idea has become a reality for a New York City high-rise that’s being cooled by ice.
Eleven Madison, a skyscraper in the heart of Manhattan, is using cool, frozen ice overnight to cool the building, reported CBS News. Four stories below ground, an ice battery system freezes water during the night, when electrical use is low, and uses this ice to cool the building during the day. “There’s about 500,000 pounds of ice created every night,” said Holly Paeper, president of Trane Technologies, a company that did the installation (装置).
Air conditioning uses nearly 20% of energy use in homes and businesses globally. However, on extremely hot days, that number can jump to 70%. Installations like the one in Eleven Madison help to lower that. According to Paeper, the company has installed the technology in about 4,000 sites worldwide.
The system in the basement of Eleven Madison uses 100 tanks that are each the size of a parking spot. Because there’s a lot of energy consumed in freezing water, a more effective way had to be found. “We take water, and add some other elements in it,” explained Dr. Patrick Shamberger, an associate professor at Texas A&M. “So we can take control of that temperature basically anywhere we want it, in the zero to 20℃ range.”
While ice batteries aren’t being used to cool food or to power electrical devices, they’re being used to cool buildings. For now, combining ice batteries with other types of energy storage from renewables can help the power grid (电网) to keep up in hot weather as well as lower the cost of electricity. It’s a win-win for all.
28. What’s the benefit of the ice battery system over traditional air conditioning?
A. It can work without relying on the power grid.
B. It takes up less space than traditional cooling systems.
C. It uses less energy by using electricity during nonpeak hours.
D. It cools buildings faster than traditional air conditioners.
29. Why are other elements added to water in the ice battery system?
A. To let the system cool food too.
B. To enable the system to adapt to different temperature control needs.
C. To fix the problem of high energy use when freezing water.
D. To make the ice last longer and not melt easily during the day.
30. What can we infer about the future development of ice battery technology?
A. It will focus on helping power electrical devices later.
B. It will use fewer tanks to save space in tall buildings,
C. It will soon replace all traditional air conditioners worldwide.
D. It may work with more renewable energy storage methods to be more useful.
31. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. NYC High-Rise Cools with Ice Battery System B. Renewable Energy for Building Cooling
C. Trane Technologies’ Global Cooling Projects D. Traditional Air Conditioning’s High Energy Use
D
There’s a continuing debate over whether electric vehicles should produce sounds to let the blind and other pedestrians (行人) know they’re on the road. Some think those sounds should be standardized — like the “beep” sound of heavy machinery backing up, indicating “something heavy is coming this way” when hearing it — while others think any sound will do.
This is a serious subject. Plug-in hybrid cars (电混动力汽车) and battery electric vehicles are super-quiet, and a study at the University of California, Riverside, pointed out that people listening to recordings on headphones can hear a regular gas car coming from 28 feet away but a hybrid in battery mode only when it’s 7 feet away.
In response, the European Union has carried out new rules; all new electric vehicle models must have a sound-producing device, which sounds like a traditional car engine. Starting in 2021, all new electric vehicles of any model will need the Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System or AVAS That sound will come into play when the car is traveling backwards or when it’s traveling at less than 12 miles an hour-speeds at which cars are more likely to be mixing with pedestrians.
That’s a nice start, say representatives for the blind, but more is needed. “We’re calling on the government to take this announcement further by requiring AVAS on all existing electric and hybrid vehicles and ensuring drivers have them switched on,” John Welshman, guide dog owner and a staff member of Guide Dogs, said in a statement.
Drivers in most cases have the ability to shut off the device when needed. My guess is that they will eventually be standardized so your mind will automatically register “electric car” when you hear it. And that’s probably a good thing to reduce the chaos on the roads.
32. What is the main safety issue discussed regarding electric vehicles?
A Their high speed capabilities.
B. Their lack of engine noise.
C. Their small size.
D. Their bright headlights.
33. How far away can people usually detect a hybrid vehicle in battery mode?
A. 28 feet. B. 12 feet.
C. 7 feet. D. 3 feet.
34. Which one can replace the underlined part “come into play” in paragraph 3?
A. Take effect. B. Slow down.
C. Break down. D. Stay silent.
35. What does the author predict will happen with AVAS sounds in the future?
A. They will be removed entirely.
B. They will vary by manufacturer.
C. They will become musical melodies.
D. They will be standardized and recognizable.
Humor is a wonderful gift that enriches life, helps build connections, and teaches kids to see the lighter side of challenges. As a parent, you play a key role in nurturing this skill — here’s how to do it naturally and joyfully.
Be a humorous role model.
Kids learn most by watching adults. If you often laugh at small, happy moments — like a clumsy pet — your child will follow. Share funny things from your childhood, or make light of small mistakes. ____36____ When humor feels natural in your home, your kid will feel safe to be funny too.
Play silly games together.
____37____ For young kids try “silly voices” while reading a story — give the bear a high-pitched tone or the rabbit a gruff one. For older kids, play “Mad Libs” or “Reverse Charades,” where they act out a word without speaking. Silly play also helps improve their creativity and language skills. These games let kids let loose and realize that being playful is enjoyable, not “silly” in a bad way.
Praise their humor attempts.
When your child tells a joke (even if it’s not perfect) or makes a funny face, respond with enthusiasm. Instead of just saying “That’s funny,” try “I love how you thought of that! It made my day.” This positive feedback makes them proud to keep sharing their funny ideas, ____38____
Teach the line between funny and hurtful.
Humor should never make someone feel bad. If your child teases a friend about their glasses, gently say, “Jokes that make others sad aren’t kind. Let’s think of a joke we can both laugh at.” ____39____ This helps them learn empathy alongside humor — an important lesson for lifelong relationships.
____40____
Everyone messes up, and laughing at small errors can teach kids not to take themselves too seriously. If your child spills milk, say, “Wow, we just made a ‘milk lake’ — let’s get towels and turn this into an adventure!” Laughing at mistakes doesn’t mean ignoring them — it means staying calm. This turns a frustrating moment into a funny one and shows them humor can fix a bad mood.
A. Let them laugh at gentle mistakes.
B. Games are a great way to mix fun and humor.
C. Your reaction tells them that their sense of humor matters.
D. It’s important to show them that humor can be kind, not just funny.
E. while negative reactions can make them afraid to share their humor again.
F. Your humor shows them that it’s okay to not take everything seriously.
G. kids often repeat behaviors that get them positive attention from parents.

Jack and his younger sister, Lily, were as different as night and day. Jack was the adventurous type, always running around with his friends, playing football or exploring the woods. Lily, on the other hand, was quieter, preferring to spend her time with her books and her dolls. However, she was quite thoughtful and always looked out for the whole family. She often helped her parents with housework, made her mom a cup of tea when she was tired, and kept an eye on her brother, Jack.
Jack had a group of close friends. They would seldom include Lily in their games — not because they disliked her, but because they thought she was too young and too different to join their adventures. This made Lily feel left out and sad, as she desired to be a part of her brother’s world.
One strange thing about Jack was that whenever he was upset, the next day he would find a single coin in his pocket. It puzzled him. He couldn’t explain where they came from. Whenever he asked his parents about it, they just smiled.
One day, Jack’s best friend moved away to another city. Jack was sad. He had spent countless hours with him, and the thought of not having him around was heartbreaking. That evening, when he came home, he was in no mood to be around anyone, not even Lily. She tried to comfort him, but in his sadness, Jack shouted at her, and his sharp words sent Lily running to her room in tears. Feeling sorry but still upset, Jack went to his room, leaving Lily to cry alone.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
The next morning, as Jack got dressed, he felt something in his pocket.

A. Get some data.
B. Write a summary.
C. Find some pictures.
A 14. B 15. B 16. C
W: Do you think we should change the title of our talk on the dangers of plastic? Not all plastic is dangerous, after all.
M: Perhaps we should change it to: The dangers of single-use plastic. That narrows it down a bit.
W: Good idea. Let’s go through the slides again and then decide how many slides we’ll have.
M: OK. We’re going to have a slide for each of the eight key reasons that show why we should stop depending on single-use plastic in our daily lives.
W: Yes, and we also need a summary slide and another one to say thank you and give our contact details at the end, so we must add two more.
M: OK. The next important issue is the order we put the reasons in. Should we start with the least dangerous and finish with the most dangerous?
W: It’s really difficult to decide which is the most and least dangerous. Why not focus on the ones where people use plastic and then move on to how these actions damage the environment?
M: That sounds good. We still need to get some pictures of animals in oceans that are in danger from plastic pollution.
W: Don’t worry. I’ll do that.

D. To help Malawi become a leader in African STEAM education by 2063.

D It cools buildings faster than traditional air conditioners.
29 Why are other elements added to water in the ice battery system?
C 29. B 30. D 31. A

A. Their high speed capabilities.
B. Their lack of engine noise.
C. Their small size.
D. Their bright headlights.
33. How far away can people usually detect a hybrid vehicle in battery mode?
A. 28 feet. B. 12 feet.
C. 7 feet. D. 3 feet.
34. Which one can replace the underlined part “come into play” in paragraph 3?
A. Take effect. B. Slow down.
C. Break down. D. Stay silent.
35. What does the author predict will happen with AVAS sounds in the future?
A. They will be removed entirely.
B. They will vary by manufacturer.
C. They will become musical melodies.
D. They will be standardized and recognizable.
B 33. C 34. A 35. D

____37____ For young kids, try “silly voices” while reading a story — give the bear a high-pitched tone or the rabbit a gruff one.

根据上文“Kids learn most by watching adults. If you often laugh at small, happy moments — like a clumsy pet — your child will follow. Share funny things from your childhood, or make light of small mistakes.(孩子们的学习主要依赖于观察大人。
根据下文“For young kids, try “silly voices” while reading a story — give the bear a high-pitched tone or the rabbit a gruff one. For older kids, play “Mad Libs” or “Reverse Charades,” where they act out a word without speaking. Silly play also helps improve their creativity and language skills. These games let kids let loose and realize that being playful is enjoyable, not “silly” in a bad way.(对于年幼的孩子,可以尝试在阅读故事时使用“滑稽的语气”——比如把熊的声音读得高亢些,把兔子的声音读得粗哑些。
根据上文“When your child tells a joke (even if it’s not perfect) or makes a funny face, respond with enthusiasm. Instead of just saying “That’s funny,” try “I love how you thought of that! It made my day.” This positive feedback makes them proud to keep sharing their funny ideas(当您的孩子讲了一个笑话(即便并不完美)或者做了一个滑稽的表情时,要以热情的态度回应。不要只是说“那真有趣”,而应该说“我喜欢你想到的这个点子!它让我这一天都很快乐。”这种积极的反馈会让他们更加自豪地继续分享他们的有趣想法)”可知,上文提到了积极的反馈会带来的积极影响,推测本句应说明负面反应会带来的影响。故E选项“而负面的反应可能会让他们不敢再次分享自己的幽默”承接上文,与上文形成对比,符合语境,故选E。
【39题详解】
根据上文“Humor should never make someone feel bad. If your child teases a friend about their glasses, gently say, “Jokes that make others sad aren’t kind. Let’s think of a joke we can both laugh at.”(幽默绝不能让人感到难受。
根据下文内容“Everyone messes up, and laughing at small errors can teach kids not to take themselves too seriously. If your child spills milk, say, “Wow, we just made a ‘milk lake’ — let’s get towels and turn this into an adventure!” Laughing at mistakes doesn’t mean ignoring them — it means staying calm. This turns a frustrating moment into a funny one and shows them humor can fix a bad mood.(每个人都会犯错,而对小错误一笑而过能够教会孩子们不要把自己看得太重要。

“it’s + 形容词 + to do sth.”

My hometown has undergone remarkable changes over the years.
In the past, people lived in poverty. Most houses were old and shabby. Pollution was severe, with rubbish thrown everywhere. Moreover, transportation was extremely inconvenient, which not only limited people’s travel but also hindered the development of my hometown.
Now, great changes have taken place. People live in spacious and bright houses. The mountains are greener, the rivers clearer, and the sky bluer. Besides, transportation has also been greatly improved, with more buses and even subways available, making travel much easier.
Looking to the future. I’m confident that my hometown will become even more beautiful and prosperous.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
The next morning, as Jack got dressed, he felt something in his pocket.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, as Jack got dressed, he felt something in his pocket. He reached in and pulled out a coin, just like before. But this time, he was determined to solve the mystery. He remembered his outburst at Lily the previous day and felt a pang of guilt. As he held the coin, an idea struck him. Maybe Lily knew something about these coins. He decided to ask her.
Knowing the truth from his parents, Jack believed he should do something. He went straight to Lily’s room, looking a bit ashamed. “Lily,” he said softly, “I’m so sorry for shouting at you. And I know now that you’ve been leaving these coins for me when I’m sad.” Lily looked up, surprised. Jack continued, “You’re so kind, and I was wrong to leave you out. From now on, you’re part of my gang. We’ll play together, and I’ll always look out for you, just like you do for me.” A big smile spread across Lily’s face. From that day on, Jack made sure Lily was included in all his activities, and the two siblings became closer than ever.
