The Fox Borrows the Tiger's Power
In the forest, the tiger was extremely powerful. It was fierce and tall—when it roared, the ground shook and the mountains trembled. All animals feared it. Everyone honored it as the "King of Beasts," and no one dared to offend it.
One day, King Tiger was hungry and had no stored food left, so it went into the jungle to hunt by itself. Under the bushes, there lay a fluffy creature, sleeping lazily. King Tiger was secretly delighted when it saw this. Without a second thought, it pounced. Its claws were so big and strong—before the small animal could even open its eyes, it was tightly trapped under the tiger's sharp claws, unable to move.
The sudden shock made the small animal a little scared, but its bright black eyes rolled quickly, and its white fur with a hint of brown shone in the sun. "Oh, it's a beautiful little fox!" King Tiger thought. "Now I can have a delicious, full meal."
However, the little fox was very cunning. Although it was caught by King Tiger and had almost no chance to escape, it still thought quickly and finally came up with a clever plan. It calmly said to the tiger: "Even though you've caught me, you can't eat me—otherwise, you will definitely be punished!"
King Tiger's stomach was growling with hunger. How could it give up the chance to fill its stomach? It had originally planned to ignore the fox and swallow it in one bite, but when it heard that it might be punished, it felt a little nervous. It quickly asked: "I'm the King of the Forest! Who could possibly punish me?"
Seeing that the tiger had fallen for its trick, the little fox continued speaking calmly: "Don't think I'm much smaller than you and seem less fierce. I was sent by the Heavenly Emperor to be the ‘King of Beasts'! If you eat me, you will go against the Heavenly Emperor's will, and you will certainly be punished!" The little fox, of course, knew that the tiger was the real King of Beasts. It also knew that only by saying this could it make the tiger keep asking questions.
As expected, when the tiger heard that the Heavenly Emperor had sent someone else to be the "King of Beasts," it became anxious at once. It angrily retorted: "Why? Are you stronger or more majestic than me?" Then it thought again: "This little fox is full of tricks. Could it be fooling me?" So it sneered fiercely: "You must have made up this lie to deceive me!"
Watching the tiger step into the trap it had set, the little fox was very happy in its heart, but it still put on a serious face and said to the tiger: "You just haven't seen how powerful I am. But if you don't believe me, let's walk around the forest. I'll walk in front of you, and you'll walk behind me. Then you can see how scared all the animals are of me. Anyway, I can't escape. If I'm lying to you, you can eat me later—it's not too late!"
King Tiger thought this made sense and agreed without hesitation. So it followed behind the little fox, while the little fox walked swaggeringly in front of the tiger. When the animals saw them, they all screamed in fear and ran away in all directions. King Tiger saw this and thought, "What the little fox said is really true!" So it didn't dare to eat the fox anymore and had to let it go.
But how could the tiger know? The animals actually ran away because they saw it—it really thought everyone was afraid of that tiny fox!
Moral
This story exposes how cunning people with no real ability use the power of others to show off and deceive. On the other hand, it also mocks the stupidity of tyrants who are as powerful as the "tiger" in the story.
