The Milu Deer by the Linjiang River
Once upon a time, there was a hunter in Linjiang. When he went hunting, he accidentally caught a young milu deer. He liked this cute little creature very much and couldn’t bear to kill it, so he took it home and raised it like a pet.
But as soon as he brought the young milu deer into the house, the hunting dogs at home smelled its scent and swarmed over. All of them drooled with greed, eager to tear the milu deer apart and eat it up at once. How could the hunter bear that? He shouted loudly to stop the dogs, then built a separate and warm "home" for the young milu deer, and fed it delicious food every day.
Not only that—afraid the dogs might attack the milu deer when he wasn’t looking, the hunter carried the young milu deer to the dogs every day. He let the dogs look at it often and told them not to move. Gradually, he even let the young milu deer play with the dogs, hoping to build a bond between them and help them get familiar with each other.
As time went by, the group of dogs began to understand their owner’s wish. The young milu deer also grew up day by day. Having stayed with the hunting dogs so often, it gradually forgot its real identity. Every day, it played with the hunter’s dogs, thinking they were all its good friends. They rubbed against each other, rolled around and played—they became closer and closer.
As for the dogs? They played well with the young milu deer only because they were afraid of their owner. But by instinct, they often licked their tongues greedily, showing a hungry look.
Time passed quickly. In the blink of an eye, three years went by. One day, the hunter went out and forgot to lock the milu deer up. The milu deer ran outside to play alone. When it saw many dogs from other families on the road, it ran over without any caution, wanting to play with them.
When those dogs saw the milu deer, they were very happy. All of them bared their teeth, surrounded it angrily, and in just a moment, they tore the milu deer apart.
The poor young milu deer didn’t even have time to react before it became the dogs’ delicious meal! How pitiful—it didn’t know why the dogs wanted to eat it until its last breath.
Moral
This fable deeply mocks those who rely on others’ power to seek friendship with those who are actually a threat. The milu deer’s end is certainly sad and pitiful, but it is also annoying and deplorable—because it relied on its owner, lost all sense of propriety, and even forgot its true identity.

A hunter in Linjiang caught a young milu deer and raised it like a pet[1]. His hunting dogs wanted to eat the deer, so the hunter stopped them and even let the deer play with the dogs[2].
As time went by, the deer grew up and forgot its real identity—it thought the dogs were good friends[3]. But the dogs only played with it because they were afraid of the hunter[4]. One day, the hunter forgot to lock the deer up. It ran outside and saw other dogs, so it ran over without any caution[5].
Those dogs bared their teeth, surrounded the deer, and tore it apart quickly[6]. The poor deer didn’t know why until its last breath[7]. This fable mocks people who rely on others’ power to be friends with threats—they lose their sense of propriety and forget who they are[8].
