M: So that paid for your holiday then.
W: Most of it yes. It was perfect for me as they only wanted me to work there during the week. That meant I could visit the islands at the weekend. I used to catch the boat on Friday evening, have two nights on an island somewhere and then get back on Sunday night ready for work.

B. Get a free pass for the blue line train.
C. Avoid taking trains to Dupont Circle.
20. What will the listeners most likely hear next?
A. Weather updates. B. News on a bridge. C. An interview with the police.
【答案】17. A 18. B 19. A 20. B
【解析】
【原文】W: Thank you for listening to MZ morning traffic with Julie Park. City tunnel is backed up almost 10 miles because a truck went out of control and crashed into the back of a car. The police are already at the scene, but it will take at least another hour. So if you’re on highway 95, I would recommend the Route 65 instead of the tunnel.
According to the weather report, there will be a snowstorm at noon, so please use extra caution because the roads will be slippery and as the temperature goes down this afternoon, the conditions will get worse. Here is another reminder that on Friday, the blue line train to DuPont Circle will be delayed for 30 minutes due to railway condition changes.
I recommend the passengers take the red line train first. And change to the blue line at East River Station. Be sure to pick up your free pass at the customer service desk before you board the red line. This Saturday, Central Bridge will reopen after two weeks of construction. Stay tuned. I’ll be right back soon with more detailed information about Central Bridge.

Dear Bruin Community:
Due to the destructive fires in our region, we have made the decision to cancel undergraduate classes and move graduate courses to remote instruction for the next two days. While there remains no immediate fire danger to our campus, given an expected change in wind direction in the hours ahead, it is likely that the air quality in Westwood will worsen. We will continue to monitor conditions in the area and are prepared to further adjust campus operations if need be.
For employees, if you are able to work remotely, please contact your department director. They are asked to work directly with their employees to meet any critical staffing and operational needs on campus, while being understanding and flexible.
Our UCLA Health facilities will remain open and fully operational so we can continue treating patients during this time. For those who work in the UCLA Health clinical areas, you will receive further communications from UCLA Health.
Even as UCLA's central focus is on protecting our students, faculty and staff, our university is doing what it can to support the broader L.A. community in a time of need. We are treating patients around the clock at our UCLA Health hospitals and adjusting facilities operations to preserve water for first responders. UCLA organizations have opened up their doors to provide free meals and other support to the community as well.
I want to personally thank our teams who have gone above and beyond to support Bruins and our neighboring communities during these times. Together, we will navigate this challenging period.
Sincerely,
Julio Frenk
Chancellor

B
Not long after my daughter was born in early 2023, I had a serious thought about the life that lay ahead for her. With health and luck, she will live long enough to see the dawn of the 22nd century.
As a journalist, I often encounter the date 2100. It’s a milestone year frequently cited in climate change news reports, stories about future technologies and science fiction. But it’s so far ahead that the route we will take to get there is difficult to see. I rarely consider that, like my daughter, millions of people alive today will be there as 2100 arrives, inheriting the century my generation will leave behind.
For many of us, how often can we truly say we are thinking about the well-being of these future generations? How often do we think about the impact of our decisions on the decades and centuries ahead?
Part of the problem is that the “now” commands so much more attention. If time could be sliced up, we would find that each cut is only getting finer (细微的), with ever-shorter periods now shaping our world. To paraphrase the investor Esther Dyson: in politics the major time frame (时间范围) is a term of office (任期), for companies it’s a quarter, on the internet it’s minutes, and on the financial markets, mere milliseconds.
Modern society is suffering from “temporal exhaustion (时间枯竭)”, the sociologist Elise Boulding once said. “If one is mentally out of breath all the time from dealing with the present, there is no energy left for imagining the future.” No wonder problems like climate change or inequality feel so hard to tackle right now.
That’s why researchers are converging on the idea that short-termism (短期主义) may be the greatest threat our species is facing this century. Despite our innate mental ability to look and plan ahead, we have a weakness in our thinking called “present bias (现时偏见)”, which favours short-term payoffs over long-term rewards. For example, people are more likely to accept an offer of 10 today, rather than a guarantee of E12 in a week. They also tend to spend on pleasures, not save for rainy days.
I understand the dangers of short-termism. I can both rationalize the argument, and feel the need to care more about future generations. But I confess I still struggle with how to translate that into clear action as an individual. To realize that we are just one in a chain of generations, we owe an obligation (义务) to our descendants to leave a better world than the one we inherited ourselves.
24. What does the second paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The author’s thoughts on the year 2100.
B. How people imagine what the year 2100 will look like.
C. The importance that the year 2100 holds in people’s eyes.
D. The plan that the author made for his/ her daughter’s future.
25. The underlined phrase in Paragraph 6 most probably means ________.
A. raising doubts about B. standing against
C. reaching an agreement on D. asking for the proof of
26. According to the author, why do few of us actually make considerations for our future generations?
① We cannot resist the temptation of short-term rewards.
②Most of us don’t have the ability to think about things long-term.
③ We are focusing so much on the “now” that there is no energy left for the future.
A. ①② B. ①③ C. ②③ D. ①②③
27. What’s the author’s intention in writing this article?
A. To criticize those who favour short-term payoffs over long-term rewards.
B. To inspire people to think more about the well-being of future generations.
C. To express his/ her dissatisfaction with people who only care about themselves.
D. To illustrate his/ her determination to consider more about the future of his/ her daughter.
【答案】24. A 25. C 26. B 27. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇议论文。主要介绍了当下人们因关注“现在”、受短期主义影响,很少考虑后代福祉,作者呼吁关注未来。
【24题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“As a journalist, I often encounter the date 2100. 故选A项。
【25题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第六段“That’s why researchers are converging on the idea that short-termism (短期主义) may be the greatest threat our species is facing this century. Despite our innate mental ability to look and plan ahead, we have a weakness in our thinking called “present bias (现时偏见)”, which favours short-term payoffs over long-term rewards.(这就是为什么研究人员converging on这样一种观点,即短期主义可能是我们这个世纪人类面临的最大威胁。尽管我们天生就有前瞻和规划的能力,但我们的思维中存在一个弱点,即“现时偏见”,它更倾向于短期回报而非长期回报)”可知,研究人员对于“短期主义可能是我们这个世纪人类面临的最大威胁”这一观点是认同的,所以converging on最有可能的意思是“对……达成共识”,与reaching an agreement on意义一致。故选C项。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Part of the problem is that the “now” commands so much more attention. If time could be sliced up, we would find that each cut is only getting finer (细微的), with ever-shorter periods now shaping our world. (部分问题在于“现在”吸引了太多的注意力。如果时间可以被分割,我们会发现每一刀都变得越来越细,现在塑造我们世界的时间段越来越短)”以及第六段“Despite our innate mental ability to look and plan ahead, we have a weakness in our thinking called “present bias (现时偏见)”, which favours short-term payoffs over long-term rewards. (尽管我们天生就有前瞻和规划的能力,但我们的思维中存在一个弱点,即“现时偏见”,它更倾向于短期回报而非长期回报)”可知,我们很少为后代考虑的原因一是我们过于关注“现在”,以至于没有精力去考虑未来;二是我们无法抗拒短期回报的诱惑。①③正确。故选B项。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“For many of us, how often can we truly say we are thinking about the well-being of these future generations? How often do we think about the impact of our decisions on the decades and centuries ahead? (对我们许多人来说,我们有多少次能真正地说我们在考虑这些后代的福祉?我们有多少次会考虑我们的决定对未来几十年甚至几个世纪的影响?)”以及最后一段“I understand the dangers of short-termism. I can both rationalize the argument, and feel the need to care more about future generations. But I confess I still struggle with how to translate that into clear action as an individual. To realize that we are just one in a chain of generations, we owe an obligation (义务) to our descendants to leave a better world than the one we inherited ourselves. (我明白短期主义的危险。我既能理性地论证这一点,又觉得有必要更多地关心后代。但我承认,我仍然在努力思考如何将这一点转化为个人的明确行动。要意识到我们只是代际链条中的一环,我们有义务为后代留下一个比我们继承的更好的世界)”可知,作者写这篇文章的目的是启发人们更多地考虑后代的福祉。故选B项。
C
A new global review of data from the Spanish study found that increasing the number of daily steps, even at low levels, was associated with a reduction in depressive symptoms (症状). Researchers led by Jimenez-Lopez, of the University of Castile-La Mancha, noted there’s already solid evidence that exercise of any kind is a natural antidepressant. But what about something as easy as walking? To find out, they looked at data from high-quality studies on daily step counts and their links to mental health.
The new review covered 33 studies with a total of more than 96,000 adults worldwide, including those who used fitness-tracker devices to calculate their daily steps. Compared to a baseline of 5,000 steps taken per day, folks who took even 1,000 more steps daily saw a 9% drop in their chances for developing depression, the researchers found. Those benefits quickly mounted up. Compared to folks walking 5,000 steps per day or less, those who walked 7,000 steps per day had 31% lower odds for depression. “In addition, counts above 7,500 steps per day were associated with a 43% lower frequency of depression,” Jimenez-Lopez and colleagues wrote, and those trends held true for “all age groups, females and males.”
There did seem to be a leveling out of mental health benefits at about 10,000 steps per day, the data showed. As has been observed in studies on physical health, up to a level of about 10,000 steps per day causes the chances for depression to decline. However, the researchers revealed that increasing the number of steps beyond this point may not have been associated with a significant reduction in depressive symptoms.
Furthermore, the new findings add walking to many other forms of physical activity – weight training, yoga and even tai chi – as ways to help prevent depression.
“Setting goals for the number of daily steps can be a rewarding and inclusive public health strategy for the prevention of depression,” the study suggested.
28. What can be inferred about the Spanish study from paragraph 1?
A. It centers on depression patients. B. It confirms the advantages of walking.
C. It contradicts former study results. D. It looks into evidence of taking exercise.
29. How is Paragraph 2 developed?
A. By giving examples. B. By following a timeline.
C. By analyzing causes. D. By making a comparison.
30. What is likely to happen after walking over 10,000 steps per day?
A. Risks of other diseases drop sharply. B. Benefits stop increasing significantly.
C. Physical health improves dramatically. D. Depression symptoms disappear totally.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards the strategy of setting goals for daily step counts?
A. Critical. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Indifferent.
【答案】28. B 29. D 30. B 31. C

【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““Setting goals for the number of daily steps can be a rewarding and inclusive public health strategy for the prevention of depression,” the study suggested.( 该研究指出:“设定每日步数的目标是一种有益且具有包容性的公共健康策略,有助于预防抑郁症。”)”可知,作者对设定每日步数目标这一策略持支持态度。故选C。
D
In a drawing room in rural Oxfordshire, an artist slowly and deliberately puts pen to paper. Her arm moves across the canvas, the marks gradually integrating into a portrait of herself. It seems like a moment of creative expression. But this is no ordinary artist — she is the world’s first humanoid robot artist, Ai-Da. By design, her very existence brings into question how we define art, and who, or in this case, what, can create it.
Will AI algorithms (算法) and robots like Ai-Da mean the end of human creativity and artistry, or can they strengthen our own creative potential? When Marcel Duchamp proposed that a urinal (小便池) be considered art, he flipped the art world on its head. In much the same way, AI-created artworks are changing the standards of the art world, because both were controversial and contain objects that haven’t technically been created by an “artist’s” hand.
Someone argues that a humanoid artist like Ai-Da represents society’s current fears — the rise of job-stealing AI algorithms and potential robot domination. But technological revolutions like artificial intelligence don’t necessarily mean the “end of art” as many fear. Instead, they can help to kickstart an artistic transformation and move us towards different ways of seeing and creating. “AI might kick us into being creative again as humans,” says mathematician Du Sautoy, who sees it as a powerful partner in the pursuit of human creativity.
However, questions of authorship haunt the artificial intelligence story. Artists Holly Herndon and Mat Dryhurst co-founded Spawning AI, which aimed at empowering human creators to prohibit AI from using their works. But there are also artists who see AI as a new outlet for their own creativity. Some artists are now even training algorithms in an attempt to push their own creative boundaries.
It’s clear that AI algorithms and machines like Ai-Da are having an impact on the art world. Their works are exhibited alongside more traditional forms of art worldwide. Next year we’ll see the world’s first AI art gallery open its doors in LA. Eva Jäger, the creative AI lead, is also helping to bring AI art to the masses, with a programme of exhibitions leading to critical discussion about the impact of technology on art. She sees the cooperation between human and machine as a space for real creative potential.
32. What does the phrase “flipped the art world on its head” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Dominated the art world. B. Overturned the art standards.
C. Broadened artists’ horizons. D. Recognized artists’ wisdom.
33. What influence will Ai-Da generate on the art world according to Du Sautoy?
A. It will increase the commercial value. B. It will replace human artists soon.
C. It may boost human creativity. D. It may cause fears in artists.
34. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. Spawning AI helps human artists use AI works.
B. Some artists train AI to work for them.
C. AI art gallery will win over more visitors.
D. Eva Jäger looks favorably to the future of AI.
35. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To argue that AI will eventually outperform human artists.
B. To promote the idea that artworks created by AI lack value.
C. To explore the impact of AI on art definition and creativity.
D. To record the history of art movements and their significance.
【答案】32. B 33. C 34. D 35. C

第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Why true happiness isn’t about being happy all the time
Over the past two decades, the positive psychology movement ___56___ (brighten) up psychological research with its science of happiness, human potential and flourishing. It argues that psychologists should investigate not only mental illness but also ___57___ makes life worth living.
The founding father of positive psychology, Martin Seligman, describes happiness as experiencing frequent positive emotions, such as joy, excitement and satisfaction, ___58___ (combine) with deeper feelings of meaning and purpose. It implies a positive attitude in the present and an optimistic outlook for the future. Importantly, happiness experts have argued that happiness is not a stable, ___59___ (change) feature but something flexible ___60___ we can work on and ultimately strive towards.
Recent research indicates that psychological ___61___ (flexible) is the key to greater happiness and well-being. For example, ___62___ (be) open to emotional experiences and the ability to tolerate periods of discomfort can allow us to move towards a richer, more meaningful existence. Studies have also demonstrated that the way we respond to the circumstances of our lives has ___63___ (influence) on our happiness than the events ___64___ (they). Experiencing stress, sadness and anxiety in the short term doesn’t mean we can’t be happy in the long term. Often when people have faced difficulty, illness or loss, they describe their lives as happier and more meaningful as a result.
_____65_____ feeling happy, which is a temporary state, leading a happier life is about individual growth by finding meaning through the whole life. It is about accepting our humanity with all its ups and downs, enjoying the positive emotions, and making use of painful feelings in order to reach our full potential.

【答案】 The Power of Museums
As shown in the chart, we can see that there has been an increasing number of people visiting museums in the last decade.
It is worth analyzing the phenomenon that museum attendance has doubled. To begin with, museums, as one of the main approaches to preserve collections ranging from antiques to modern artifacts, document social transformation of social life and narrate those stories without words. Secondly, as exhibitions are diverse, museums cater to people from almost all walks of life and ages, allowing visitors to find displays that align with their interests. Additionally, visiting museums and engaging in their exhibitions not only can people’s lives be enriched, but also broaden their knowledge and perspectives.
As far as I am concerned, museums play a crucial role in our society, and it’s high time we made visiting them a part of our leisure activities.

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As a forest ranger (护林员), I was making an inspection tour as usual on a misty dawn. Boots sank into the damp path, each step breaking the deep quiet of the ancient woodland. As I adjusted the camera trap on a trunk, its lens (镜头) was still covered with raindrops from last night. Suddenly, a weak crying sound cut through the fog.
Pushing through wet bushes, I stopped instantly. There, in the shallow muddy river, lay an elephant calf (幼崽). Its reddish-brown fur was dirty with mud. The calf’s back leg was trapped unnaturally beneath a messy pile of old wire netting — the kind illegal woodcutters used to mark territories. Old metal pieces were cruel marks of humans in this wild nature reserve. His dark brown eyes locked onto mine, and unexpectedly my normal forest check became a fight against time.
The calf struggled with little strength, and its leg got stuck tighter in the sharp metal wires every time he moved. I thought of Professor Liang, an expert in wildlife protection, who once said, “For endangered species, humans are both threat and hope.” Therefore, I carefully opened my field work-box. The scissors felt tiny as I tried to cut the wires. One wrong move could hurt the calf. Just as I started cutting, a roar came from the fog.
Behind me, the bushes shook violently. Out of the mist came an adult elephant, with ears flapping (拍打) like a storm cloud. She stopped ten steps away, strong muscles tense under gray skin. The morning sunlight cast the mother’s shadow over the trapped calf. We formed a tense triangle — human, mother and calf — bound by fear. A sharp cry of a bird cut through the tension. Its black wings broke the quiet, as if nature itself was watching this delicate moment.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The mother elephant took a step forward, her eyes never leaving me.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hours later, I watched the mother elephant and her calf from a distance through cameras.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 The mother elephant took a step forward, her eyes never leaving me. I stood still, my heart pounding wildly. She approached cautiously and gently nudged the calf with her trunk. The trapped leg was now even more tightly caught in the wires. I knew I had to do something fast. With trembling hands, I resumed cutting the wires, all the while keeping an eye on the mother elephant. To my relief, she seemed to sense my intention and remained calm. After what felt like an eternity, the last piece of wire fell away, freeing the calf’s leg.
Hours later, I watched the mother elephant and her calf from a distance through cameras. They were walking slowly but steadily towards the heart of the forest. The calf occasionally stumbled, but the mother was always there to support him. Seeing them disappear into the greenery, a wave of emotion washed over me. This encounter reminded me of the delicate balance between humans and wildlife. We have the power to destroy, but also the ability to heal. As long as we choose hope over threat, there will always be a chance for coexistence.

Sincerely,
Julio Frenk
Chancellor
