Swimming and English Learning
Can you swim? Do you like swimming? Yes? Well, how can you learn to swim? I think the best way is to go into the water and learn. I’m afraid you’ll never learn to swim just by reading books about swimming or looking at others who are swimming. It’s the same with the English study. We must practice, practice and practice.
Listening and speaking are very important for beginners. The children in English-speaking countries first listen to others. Then they try to imitate and speak. We can listen to English programs on the radio. You may just understand a few words. It doesn’t matter. Just be relaxed, and try to catch every word.
Somebody may be a good listener. But he or she dare not speak. He or she is afraid of making mistakes. You know we sometimes make mistakes when we speak Chinese. Don’t be afraid. We must be brave. If you really want to learn English well, you must try to speak with everyone so long as he knows English. Whether you know him or not is not important. When there’s nobody to talk with, you can talk to yourself in English. It’s interesting and also a good way to practice your spoken English. Remember, the more you speak, the fewer mistakes you’ll make.
Reading and writing are more important for senior high school students. First, we must choose the books we’re interested in. A lot of reading will improve your language sense. This is the most important.
Keep writing English diaries. We can also write English articles. You may even post them to English magazines. Don’t be afraid of failure. Failure is the mother of success.
Easier said than done. Well, let’s do more practice from now on. I’m sure you’ll learn English well in this way.

DIY, which means Do It Yourself, is quite popular in the UK. Lots of stores and supermarkets sell DIY things. TV programs show people how to DIY.
English people like DIY. There is a saying in the UK — “As an Englishman’s home is his castle.” A huge number of people spend their holidays making their homes beautiful “castles”. If there is anything that needs fixing around their homes, such as painting the walls or putting in a new shower, they will do the jobs themselves. They share DIY experience with their friends. More and more people have discovered the joy of DIY. Sometimes people also DIY for saving money. With the economic downturn (经济滑坡) at present, many people cannot afford a big house. They are looking at how they can make their house better without spending a lot of money. It is not surprising that DIY is so popular.
DIY can be difficult. There is a huge market for DIY furniture which people need to get together themselves with a few basic tools. However, people often find it not easy to build a piece of furniture because they can’t understand the instructions. Sometimes the instructions are simple and clear, but the furniture itself is difficult to build. One thing is for sure, though most DIY projects are started with the best intentions. Many of them may not get finished. DIY can also be dangerous. For example, anything electrical should be done by a professional worker. Unluckily, many people don’t care about this warning and put themselves in danger. It is reported that in just one year over 230,000 people were hurt while doing DIY in the UK, including 41,000 who fell off ladders.
Therefore, DIY can bring us fun and help us save money, but it is not always as easy as it is thought to be if we bite off (咬掉) more than we can chew. Maybe factories should make products that are easier and safer for us to DIY.

C. Be careful while doing DIY. D. It is necessary for us to DIY.
9. In the passage, “we bite off more than we can chew” probably means ________.
A. we can eat everything we like

It was said that jazz musicians and other performers first called New York City the Big Apple in the 1930s.
At that time, jazz musicians earned money by performing in many cities and towns across the United States. Then they usually played music in different towns at night. But the performers liked to play in New York City best. New York City was a place with the best-paying jobs, the most money to earn, and the greatest number of people who enjoyed jazz music. A performer wasn’t considered successful until he was successful in New York City. The early jazz musicians described each town and city in America as an apple on a tree. Naturally they called New York City The Big Apple. Later a nightclub was named the Big Apple, and a popular dance was also called The Big Apple. But no one except jazz musicians and some performers used this term to describe New York City.
The city’s officials wanted to get more people to visit New York City. They needed a new symbol for the city. They remembered the stories of jazz musicians and began using the Big Apple in their advertisements. The idea worked.
Now so many people from different countries visit New York City every day. They may know New York City’s nickname, but they may not know why the city is called the Big Apple.
11. Why did jazz musicians call New York City the Big Apple?

Something that is polite in one country may be quite impolite in another. In Britain, you mustn’t lift your bowl to your mouth when you are having some liquid (液体) food. But it’s different in China. If you are a visitor in Mongolia, what manners do they wish you to have? They wish you to give a loud “burp” (打嗝) after you finish eating. Burping shows that you like the food.
In Britain, you should try not to put your hands on the table when you’re having a meal. In Mexico, however, guests are expected to keep their hands on the table during a meal. But in Arab countries you must be very careful with your hands. You mustn’t eat with your left hand. Arabs consider it very bad manners eating with left hands. So, what should you do if you are on a visit in another country? Well, just do in Rome as the Romans do. You can ask the native (本土的) people to help you or just watch carefully and follow them.

The Great Wall of China is one of the greatest wonders of the world. It runs across North China like a huge dragon. It winds its way from west to east, across deserts, over mountains, through valleys, till finally it reaches the sea.
It has a history of more than 2,000 years. The major renovations (修复) of the Great Wall took place in the Qin, Han and Ming dynasties. Most of the Great Wall we see today was rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty. It is more than 6,000 kilometers long, about 6-7 meters high and 4-5 meters wide. In most places it has enough room for five horses or ten men to walk side by side along the top. It has great gateways which connect the main roads of North China.
The hardships involved in building the Great Wall are beyond imagination. Lots of people had to leave their homes and families, they worked hard. Many died on the worksites. Of the many legends about the Great Wall, the story of Lady Mengjiang is the most moving. After her husband went to build the Great Wall, she expected to see him so much that she traveled many miles to see him. A man told her that her husband had died and was buried under the wall. After hearing that, Mengjiang cried for three days and nights. At last, the Great Wall fell down.
Over the centuries, the Great Wall has become a symbol of consolidation (团结) and strength for the Chinese people. It symbolizes that great achievement can be made by people. For example, the national anthem (国歌) called on the people to “build our new Great Wall with our flesh and blood”. We all know that nothing is impossible, if we put our whole heart into it.

A. reading books about it B. looking at others who are swimming
C. having lessons on it D. going into the water and learning

4. We should learn English by ________.
A. listening and speaking B. reading and writing
C. both A and B D. making mistakes
5. What’s more important for senior high school students?
A. Listening. B. Speaking. C. Reading and writing. D. Writing.

15. What may the best title for the passage be?
A. New York City and the Biggest Apple.
B. Jazz musicians in New York City.
C. Apples in each city in the United States.

People in different countries have different ways of doing things.
Something that is polite in one country may be quite impolite in another. In Britain, you mustn’t lift your bowl to your mouth when you are having some liquid (液体) food. But it’s different in China. And in Japan you even needn’t worry about making noises when you have it. It shows that you are enjoying it. But it is regarded as bad manners in Britain.
