Passage 1(2024-2025·深圳实验学校中学部)
Libby loves science, especially chemistry. Her chemistry teacher, Mr. Darwin, once said, “It’s okay to make mistakes because they can lead to new findings. And making mistakes is more fun than cleaning up. ”
One day, Mr. Darwin said, “We will run the science station at our school’ s Autumn Festival. The station with the most visitors wins an ice-cream party.” He chose Libby, Rosa, and Finn to help with the station. The girls were excited. They picked three favourite experiments for the festival-making big bubbles (泡泡), mixing soft slime (史莱姆), and launching a rocket. “I can’t wait!” said Libby.
The festival day finally came. All the stations were busy except the science station, so the girls decided to try something interesting. They made big bubbles first. People started to come over. Then, Rosa used salty water to make very soft slime. “Now for the rocket! If we use more baking soda (小苏打), the rocket might go higher,” said Libby.
Unluckily, when Libby added the baking soda, an accident happened – water got on the kids. Everyone got wet and ran away. In the end, they had no visitors.
The girls didn’t win. Libby felt sad. But Mr. Darwin told them, “You three did a great job!” “But we didn’t win,” mumbled (嘟囔) Libby. “That DOESN’T mean we can’t be proud of how hard you tried. We can have our OWN ice-cream party!” “We’ll get ice and milk! ” cheered the girls.
“Yum. This is delicious, ” said Finn after tasting their homemade ice-cream. “It’s okay to make mistakes,” said Rosa. “And it’s so much more fun than cleaning up! ” smiled Libby.

Passage 2(2024-2025·广州执信中学)
How fit are your teeth? Are you lazy about brushing them? Never fear: An inventor is on the case. An electric toothbrush senses how long and how well you brush, and it lets you track your performance on your phone.
The Kolibree toothbrush was exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week. It senses how it is moved and can send the information to an Android phone or iPhone via a Bluetooth wireless connection. The toothbrush will be able to teach you to brush right (Don’t forget the insides of the teeth!) and make sure you’re brushing long enough. “It’s kind of like having a dentist actually watch your brushing on a day-to-day basis,” says Thomas Serval, the French inventor.
The toothbrush will also be able to talk to other programs on your phone, so developers could, for example, create a game controlled by your toothbrush. You could score points for beating monsters among your teeth. “We try to make it smart but also fun,” Serval says.
Serval says he was inspired by his experience as a father. He would come home from work and ask his kids if they had brushed their teeth. They said “yes”, but Serval would find their toothbrush heads dry. He decided he needed a brush that really told him how well his children brushed.
The company says the Kolibree will go on sale this summer, from $99 to $199, depending on features. The U. S. is the first target market.

Think of a world full of pops and laughter! That is the fun of bubble wrap (气泡包装), one of the best inventions ever. But did you know that it wasn’t made for popping in the beginning? This brings us to its funny story! Let’s learn more about it!
In 1957, two engineers tried to invent a new kind of wallpaper. They put two shower curtains together with air bubbles between them. The result? A bumpy (不平整的), bubbly mess! Instead of cool wallpaper, they made something much more exciting.
However, bubble wrap didn’t work as wallpaper at first. In fact, it wasn’t used for anything because it wasn’t flat! But when people saw it protected fragile things well, they sold it as packing material. Soon, people used bubble wrap to protect glass and electronics during shipping.
But it wasn’t popular until people fell in love with its fun “pop”. They started popping it for enjoyment, making it a playful activity. Many say popping bubble wrap helps them relax by popping their worries away!
People use bubble wrap for packing, making art projects, and as a fun toy. Some companies make bubble wrap so that you can pop it again and again, so the fun keeps going!
The next time you open a package and hear the fun pops, think about bubble wrap’s journey-from a failed wallpaper idea to a perfect stress—relieving toy. This change shows that sometimes good inventions come from happy accidents and a bit of imagination!

Passage 4(2024-2025·广州荔湾区真光中学)
Imagine that the battery on your mobile phone has run out. You can’t make any calls for help and no one can contact you. You are all alone, and well, not quite. Just reach into your pocket and take out a piece of sugar. Put it into the battery, wait a minute and you are back on the phone.
Thanks to a couple of American scientists, this situation (情况) could become real. Swadesh Chaudhuri and Derek Lovely have invented the “bacteria (细菌) battery”. This kind of battery gets its power from bacteria that eat sugar and turn it into electricity.
“This is a special organism (有机体) ,” Lovely said. “You can get enough electricity to power a cell phone battery for about four days from a spoonful (一勺) of sugar.”
In the past, bacteria batteries have been expensive and not long-lasting. But this battery uses a more efficient (有效率的) bacterium that can turn 80 percent of sugar into electrical energy. This is 30 percent more than similar batteries can manage.
The bacteria battery could become as small as a household battery. It is also cheap and stable (稳定的) , because sugar can be taken from waste and crops.
But the sugar-to-electricity process (过程) is not satisfactory as it could take weeks for the bacteria to change a cup of sugar into electricity. And it produces “greenhouse” gases which pollute the environment.
The scientists understand there is a lot more work to be done. “It is still young,” said Lovely.
“Where we are now is where solar power was 20 or 30 years ago.”
He also believes the battery will be used in scientific equipment at the bottom of the ocean. Ocher’s ideas include using sugar in the blood to run medical devices in the human body and taking sugar from animal waste to provide energy to power homes in the countryside.

Passage 8(2024-2025·深圳侨香中学)
Jokes made by AI lack (缺乏) creative thinking. It seems you can ask artificial intelligence (AI) programs anything, and they’ll give you an answer. So, can they tell jokes? This question was raised by a UK comedian (喜剧演员) Karen Hobbs in one of her shows in June. Instead of the usual jokes she created, Hobbs told jokes written by ChatGPT.
When Hobbs asked ChatGPT for a joke, it gave one about a man joking about getting bored with his shopping-obsessed (痴迷于购物的) girlfriend. Even when she asked to tell it from a woman’s perspective (视角), it was still a shopping-obsessed girlfriend but told in the first person.
It’s no surprise that many jokes by AI come from a man’s perspective, as men are much more common in comedy. The BBC said that AI storytelling can only create stories based on what is already there.
A good joke in real life can always change based on the audience’s reaction (反应).This is a skill that often leads comedians to improvise (即兴创作). That’s something that AI can’t do for now. For example, in improvise (即兴创作), comedians don’t make preparations. They depend only on their natural reaction to the audience.
However, that could change. Research is being done to give AI a greater understanding of the world around it, which makes the future of AI jokes still uncertain.
1. What did Karen Hobbs do in one of her shows in June?
A. She told jokes written by herself. B. She performed a magic trick.

A. AI can create completely new stories.
B. AI can only create stories based on existing (现存的) ones.
C. AI storytelling is not popular.
D. AI can improvise stories like humans.
4. What do comedians depend on in improvise?
A. Their prepared scripts (手稿). B. The audience’s suggestions.
C. Their natural reaction to the audience. D. Their previous performances.
5. What can be inferred (推断) from the last sentence of the passage?

话题2:中外文化
Passage 9(2024-2025·广州铁一中学)
Do you have a lucky number? What is it? Many people have a special number that they hope will bring them good luck.
In Chinese culture, some numbers are believed to be lucky or unlucky based on the Chinese word that the number sounds similar to.
For example, the word for the number 8 sounds similar to the word for “making a fortune (发财)”. So, people consider it a very lucky number. Some people will even spend a lot of money to have 8s in their phone number or on their vehicle license plate (车牌照) number. The opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics began at 8:08 p.m. on Aug. 8, 2008.
The number 9 is also a lucky number because of its connection to the emperors of China. There were nine dragons on emperors’ robes (龙袍) and Chinese myth held that the dragon had nine children. The number 9 also stands for “long lasting”. That’ s why a man always proposes (求婚) to a woman with 99 or 999 roses.
So, what’s an unlucky number in China? One example is 4. Many Chinese people see 4 as an unlucky number because it sounds similar to the character for “death”.
Because of this, many buildings skip (跳过) the fourth floor, and simply call it the fifth floor. In Hong Kong, some buildings even skip all floors numbered with 4, such as 4, 14, 24, 34 and all 40-49 floors. Some buildings also skip the 13th floor, as this is considered an unlucky number in some areas in Hong Kong. As a result, a building whose highest floor is 50 may have only 35 physical floors.
1. What makes Chinese people believe a number is lucky or unlucky?
A. The shape of the number. B. The sound of the number.
C. The history of the number. D. The spelling of the number.
2. A building whose highest floor is 60 in Hong Kong might only have ________ physical floors if it skips all the unlucky numbers.
A. 35 B. 60 C. 45 D. 44
3. According to the passage, the meaning of number 9 in Chinese culture is _________.
A. fortunate B. ordinary C. everlasting D. simple
4. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Numbers and old stories in China.

Passage 11(2024-2025·广州荔湾区第一中学)
The Mayan number system appeared in the fourth century, which was about 1,000 years earlier than the time when the European number system was created. It is different from the Arabic number system with a base 10. The Mayan system had a base 20. This system is believed to have been used because the Mayans lived in such a warm area and there was hardly a need to wear shoes. 20 was the total number of fingers and toes, so the system was workable. Therefore, there were two important numbers in this system. Besides 20, the other important number is 5, which had a connection with the number of fingers and toes on one hand or foot.
The Mayan system used two symbols (符号). A dot (.) was used to mean the units (one to four) and a dash (—) meant five. The Mayans were also the first to create symbols of nothing (or zero). The most common symbol was that of a shell () but there were several other symbols (e.g. a head) . It is interesting to learn that with all of the great experts on Maths and scientists in ancient Greece and Rome, it was the Mayan Indians who came up with this symbol zero or nothing. The following picture is a form of different numbers and how they would have been written.
From further study, people found that the 360 day calendar (日历) also came from the Mayan. They actually used base 18 when they made the calendar. Each month included 20 days with 18 months in a year. This left five days at the end of the year which was month in itself, full of danger and bad luck. In this way, the Mayans had invented the 365 day calendar.
1. What does the underlined “It” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A. The European number system. B. The Mayan number system.
C. The Arabic number system. D. The Mayan symbol system.
2. Why could the Mayan system be used at that time?
A. People lived in such a warm area that they didn’t need to count numbers.
B. People believed that they hardly used their fingers or toes to count numbers.
C. People thought the number of fingers and toes was enough to count numbers.
D. People found that they could use the days in a year of a calendar to count numbers.
3. Which of the following symbols means sixteen?
A. B. C. D.
4. What can we learn from the article?
A. The Mayan number system had a base 10.
B. All number systems had the same symbols.
C. There were only 360 days in the Mayan calendar.
D. The symbol of zero first appeared in the Mayan number system.
5. Where can you probably find the article?
A. A diary. B. An encyclopedia. C. A travel guide. D. A geography magazine.
【答案】1. B 2. C 3. A 4. D 5. B

话题3:人文与科普
Passage 12(2024-2025·深圳麒麟中学)
Laughing is one of life’s simplest pleasures. It’s free. You can do it anywhere and it makes you feel good. Laughter is infectious (感染的). Often when we hear someone laughing in a crowded room or on a packed train, for example, we start laughing too — even if we have no idea why.
Making others laugh is an act of joy and kindness. However, when people laugh at you, it’s not. That experience is lonely and no fun at all. For example, if Anna is in a funny play and people laugh with her, that’s a good thing. However, if she forgets her lines, people may laugh at her. That isn’t so good. People might even call her a laughingstock (笑柄). No one, not even a professional comedian (喜剧演员), wants to be a laughingstock.
For example, let’s say a boy likes dancing with teddy bears. He records it and accidentally (偶然地) sends it to one of his classmates. The classmate shares the video with others and the boy becomes the laughingstock of the whole school.
But our story doesn’t end there. Someone posts the video online and over 10 million people watch it. Then, the boy gets lots of offers to make advertisements for teddy bears and makes a lot of money. Now, you can say the boy has the last laugh. When you have the last laugh, you end up winning.
Another way to have the last laugh is to simply laugh off a difficult situation. It shows you just don’t care. For example, if the boy is a friend of yours, you can tell him to just laugh it off.
1. Why do we possibly follow someone else to laugh on a packed train?
A. Because laughing is free. B. Because we have no idea why.
C. Because laughing makes us feel lonely. D. Because laughter is infectious.
2. From the second paragraph, we can learn that _________.
A. being a laughingstock is fun B. we shouldn’t laugh
C. laughing at someone is no fun D. making others laugh is too difficult
3. A professional comedian _________.
A. wants to be a laughingstock B. wouldn’t like to be a laughingstock
C. likes to laugh at others D. often forgets the lines
4. If one has the last laugh, he _________ in the end.
A. achieves success B. is still a laughingstock
C. makes others laugh D. doesn’t care about the results
5. If someone makes fun of your sister and you want to tell her not to pay too much attention to it, you can say, “_________”.
A. You’re really a laughingstock B. Hey, just laugh it off.
C. It’s not funny—don’t laugh. D. You have the last laugh.

It’s hard to believe that the egg will become something completely different in a few days. It turns into a walking insect. This insect is called a caterpillar. It now has legs, eyes and a large body. A new life has begun. The caterpillar can eat, walk and see, but it is still not a butterfly.
Soon, after growing big, the caterpillar makes a cover for itself. It covers itself in a protective blanket (保护层) and goes to sleep. This stage is known as the “pupa (蛹)” stage.
After a period of time, the blanket breaks and a wet, weak butterfly appears. It now has six legs, a mouth, eyes and wings. Shortly, the wings fill with blood, and the beautiful, colourful butterfly spreads its wings and flies away.
After a few weeks, this adult butterfly lays her eggs, and the cycle begins all over again. This is just one example of the wonders of nature. Look into the woods and mountains and see what you can find next.

Serval says that one day, it’ll be possible to replace (更换) the brush on the handle with a brushing unit that also has a camera. The camera can even examine holes in your teeth while you brush.

1. What’s the passage mainly about?

Scientists say they have had a “conversation” with a humpback whale (座头鲸). The scientists are from the University of California, the Alaska Whale Foundation and the SETI Institute (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute 搜寻地球外文明研究所). They teamed up and spoke to a humpback whale named Twain. They spoke to her in “humpback language” for 20 minutes. Their conversation took place after the scientists sent a “contact call” into the ocean off the coast of Alaska. Twain heard the call and responded (回应). She swam to the research boat, circled it and chatted. The SETI Institute said it was the first ever communication between humans and a humpback whale.
The scientists said their conversation with Twain was not a deep one. Professor Brenda Mc Cowan said it was more like a series of greetings. Whales use contact calls to let other whales know where they are. The scientists made the same call 36 times over a 20-minute period. Each time, Twain responded by calling back. She even matched the intervals (间隔) between each call that the researchers made, which greatly surprised the scientists.
Professor Brenda Mc Cowan told the Business Insider website that this research could make it easier to talk to aliens (外星人). She said, “There are many kinds of intelligent beings on this planet.
C. She sang a song. D. She told jokes written by ChatGPT.
2. Who is more common in comedy according to the passage?
A. Women B. Men. C. Children. D. Elderly people.
3. What did the BBC say about AI storytelling?
A. AI jokes will never be funny.
B. The future of AI jokes is for sure.
C. AI might improve its ability to tell jokes in the future.
D. Research on AI has stopped.
B. Lucky and unlucky numbers in Chinese culture.
C. Ways to find your lucky and unlucky numbers.
D. Different meanings of numbers in different countries.

C. laughing at someone is no fun D. making others laugh is too difficult
