Now, Earth Day is celebrated around the world. We still face many challenges, such as climate change, plastic pollution, and deforestation. But we can all make a difference.
Her Trees Save Lives
Adeline Tiffanie Suwana was 12 when her family’s home flooded. Indonesia, her island nation, is often hit hard by floods and other natural disasters.
Adeline learned that mangrove trees play a key role in flood protection and rallied classmates to plant 200 trees during a school break. They started a group called Sahabat Alam or Friends of Nature, which works to conserve the region’s biodiversity and combat climate change.
Today. Adeline attends university, studying how businesses can help the environment.
Teens’ Two-Fold Invention
EPS—expanded polystyrene foam—is the white, lightweight stuff used to make things like takeout food containers, foam egg cartons, and packing “peanuts”. But it takes up a lot of space and is difficult to recycle. EPS breaks into small pieces as it floats down waterways into oceans, harming wildlife along the way.
Eighth-graders Julia Bray, Luke Clay, and Ashton Cofer looked at EPS’s chemical makeup and saw that it was mostly carbon. That sparked an idea. Could they turn it into activated carbon, a material that filters toxins from water?
After 50 hours of experiments, including one that accidentally set the family grill fire, they succeeded!
Solar for Her School
When Claire Vlases of Montana was in seventh grade, she learned about plans to expand and modernize her middle school. Claire asked the school board to add solar panels to the project. The board liked the idea but said it could contribute just $25,000, one-fifth of the cost. So Claire organized a group of kids and adults who set to work raising the rest.
They asked for donations, even going door-to-door for them. And they appealed to charitable foundations too. One even donated half the cost!
After two years of hard work, the group paid for the solar panels, which now supply one-fourth of the school’s electricity needs.
1. What do the three groups of teenagers have in common?
A. They are Earth-helping heroes. B. They are from island countries.
C. They are high school students. D. They are keen on experiments.
2. How much did one of the charitable organizations donate for solar panels?
A. $25,000. B. $50,000. C. $62,500. D. $125,000.
3. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To give models for colorful school activities.

I hated writing growing up. It felt like navigating a chaotic jungle, unsure where to reach next. But I couldn’t avoid the jungle: High school English classes. I often sat for hours staring at blank pages, trying to turn my scattered thoughts into fluent sentences. My teachers’ red-inked feedback, criticizing my essays for lack of organization and transitions, left me frustrated. How could I know what was good if there was no objectively right answer? Maybe I wasn’t meant for writing, and that was OK.
I was drawn to the orderly world of math and science, where objective truth could be found. In college, I joined a research lab. I spent weeks setting up a test for a design, only to be disappointed by the results. I felt down, but I knew in the orderly world of math and science, a solution must exist — all I had to do was find it. I kept trying new designs, using the results to brainstorm ideas with a team of researchers. After a year of trial and error, we finally succeeded. I was overjoyed until my professor told me to write the research paper, which felt like being thrown back into the jungle I had avoided.
I knew that to become an academic, I needed to write papers, but my awful track record with writing scared me. Panicked, I asked a graduate student in my lab for help. I carefully outlined a paper and asked him for feedback, only to receive it back covered in red marks. The graduate student explained that red didn’t mean I was a bad writer. It just requires revising your work, often several times. Suddenly I realized that writing, like research, is a process of revision and improvement. With help, I was making my way through the “jungle”, and surprisingly, I was having fun.
From then on, writing became one of my favorite parts of research, and it still is today. It’s a future I could never have imagined during my early struggles with English classes. But I’ve come around through trial and error.
4. Which can best describe the author’s experience with writing in high school?
A. He felt it worth exploring but time-wasting. B. He struggled with organizing his thoughts.
C. He cared little about his teachers’ feedback. D. He usually left the pages empty for lack of ideas.
5. Compared with writing, how did the author face the challenge in his research?
A. He adopted a problem-solving mindset despite unexpected results.
B. He had a sense of disappointment and uncertainty about the final solution.
C. He was initially uninterested in research but found joy after success.
D. He felt being thrown back into the jungle in the research process.
6. What can be inferred about writing from paragraph 3?
A. It involves constant improvement like conducting research.
B. It isn’t a necessary step on the path to an academic.
C. It acts as a minor part of the overall research.
D. It’s a hard process to improve even with others’ help.
7. Which of the following might be the best title?
A. Jungle of Writing: a Peaceful Writer’s Paradise B. Struggles with English Classes and Research Paper
C. From Hating to Loving: My Writing Journey D. Predictable Journey to a Successful Researcher
【答案】4. B 5. A 6. A 7. C

Have you ever had the feeling that you can’t think when there is too much noise around? Did you ever think a fish could experience that feeling too? A recent paper published in Science titled “Soundscape (声景) of the Anthropocene Oceans”, combined over 10,000 scientific papers, confirming that undersea life knows that exact same feeling, more often than not. Anthropogenic (人为的) ocean noise, also known as underwater noise pollution, has created a dramatic impact on marine life due to “human-caused” activity within and neighboring our oceans.
Disney Pixar’s animated film Finding Nemo educated us about the ocean, and specifically within the ordinary world of a clown fish. A fact many may not know is that clown fish spend the first part of their lives as larvae, drifting with the current of the ocean until they become strong enough to swim against it. Once they are powerful and strong, they head home in sheltered coral reefs. There is only one drawback — the fish can’t physically see the reef, but they can hear it. The only problem is, if they can’t hear it, will they ever make it home?
Our anthropogenic ocean noise, such as cargo ships, ship and boat propellers, surfing, deep sea mining, etc. are causing destruction of marine life. According to Time, sound is the sensory signal that travels the farthest through the ocean. Anthropogenic noise drowns out the natural soundscapes, putting marine life under immense stress. Altogether, this stress then affects their general health, disrupts their behavior, physiology, reproduction and, in extreme cases, causes death. Marine life can adapt to noise pollution, however, only if they can escape it. This only renders further complications of straying (使偏离) species from their traditional breeding regions or separating them from their families.
Now, what if we told you there is already a solution? Multiple remedies, ideas and designs are currently in the works or already exist to eliminate and reverse the damage of anthropogenic ocean noise. As Time explains, from wind-powered ships to noise-reducing propellers, floating wind turbines and “bubble curtains” that muffle construction noise, the solutions are already available and in some cases, cost-effective. The authors of the paper hope it will catch the attention of policymakers, who historically speaking, have ignored the matter still to this day.
Of all the challenges ocean creatures are battling, luckily sound pollution is the easiest compromise humans can make. Once the noise has decreased, marine life will be able to better manage everything else it is up against.
8. How does anthropogenic ocean noise affect clown fish?
A. It improves their reproduction rates.
B. It promotes their better development.
C. It hinders them from finding their home.
D. It causes them to give up their migration in the ocean.
9. What does the underlined word “renders” probably mean in paragraph 3?
A. leads to B. decides on C. holds back D. results from
10. Which of the following solutions is already available according to paragraph 4?
A. The application of relevant laws B. The use of noise control technology.
C. The restriction of human activities. D. The attention of local policymakers.
11. What is the text mainly about?
A. The beauty of marine ecosystems.
B. The urgent need for ocean conservation.
C. The impact of climate change on ocean noise.
D. The harmful effects of human-generated ocean noise.

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are indicating that accurate quake forecasting may be attainable, thereby casting doubt on the conventional wisdom that such an accomplishment is beyond our capabilities. Researchers at the University of Texas, Austin, created an AI model that, during a test run in China, correctly forecasted approximately 70 percent of earthquakes with a one-week warning and offered reliable assessments of their potential intensity.
The researchers attribute their technique’s effectiveness to its reliance on a straightforward machine leaning framework. The AI was provided with a set of statistical features based on the team’s knowledge of earthquake physics, and then instructed to train itself using a five-year database of earthquake recordings. Once trained, the AI offered predictions by detecting early indicators of quakes hidden within the planet’s low-frequency rumbles (隆隆声).
The project marks a substantial breakthrough in the exploration of AI for anticipating seismic (地震) events. According to Alexandros Savvaidis, a senior researcher heading the Texas Seismological Network, “Seismic occurrences strike without warning, often in the blink of an eye. Your readiness is all you can influence. Achieving a 70% prediction rate is a considerable achievement that could significantly restrict the impact of earthquakes, reducing both the financial burden and loss of life, and the potential to remarkably improve earthquake preparation worldwide.”
Although the effectiveness of this method in different regions remains uncertain, the researchers believe that their AI model has the potential to enhance prediction accuracy when carried out in regions equipped with dependable seismic monitoring facilities. Their next step is to test artificial intelligence in Texas, where the University of Texas’s TexNet operates a network of 300 earthquake stations and over six years’ worth of continuous records, making it an ideal location for these purposes.
Ultimately, the authors aim to combine the system with physics-based models. This approach could be particularly valuable in areas characterized by limited or inadequate data. “That may be a long way off, but many advances such as this one, taken together, are what moves science forward,” concludes Scott Tinker, the bureau’s director.
12. How does the AI predict seismic events?
A. It identifies data from the satellites.
B. It analyzes background sounds in the Earth.
C. It models data based on earthquake recordings.
D. It monitors changes in the Earth’s magnetic field.
13. What does Alexandros Savvaidis intend to show in paragraph 3?
A. The ways to reduce losses in earthquakes.
B. The importance of preparing for earthquakes.
C. The significance of developing the AI prediction.
D. The restrictions of AI-based methods in earthquake prediction.
14. What does the subsequent research focus on?
A. Conducting tests in different locations.
B. Applying the AI approach to other fields.
C. Building more earthquake stations in Texas.
D. Enlarging the database to train the calculation accuracy.
15. Which words can best describe the earthquake-predicting technology?
A. Stable but outdated. B. Effective but costly.
C. Potential and economical. D. Pioneering and promising.
【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. D

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was in elementary school, I wasn’t very good at sports. I was always the last to be picked for teams, and I never won a race. I thought being slow and weak made me a failure. But one day, my P. E. teacher, Mr Harris, said something that changed my mind. He had been watching me struggle during a running drill, and after the class, he came over to talk to me.
“You may not be the fastest,” he said, “but you have something even more important. You don’t give up.” I didn’t really understand what he meant at the time. How could not quitting be better than winning? In my mind, if you weren’t first, then you lost. But Mr Harris kept encouraging me. He told me that winning wasn’t everything and that sometimes trying hard and not giving up was even more valuable.
At first, I didn’t believe him, but then he suggested I start practicing a little every day after school. “Don’t focus on becoming the fastest,” he said. “Just focus on improving, even if it’s a little bit each day.” I decided to give it a try, although I wasn’t sure it would make a difference. I began running around the track after school, one lap, then two, slowly increasing my endurance. Over the next few weeks, I noticed small changes. I could run longer without getting tired, and I was improving, even if I wasn’t winning yet.
As the school’s annual race day approached, I wondered if I should sign up. I still wasn’t fast enough to win, but Mr Harris encouraged me once more. “The race isn’t about being first,” he reminded me. “It’s about showing what you can do when you don’t give up. That’s real success.”
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
A few days later, I signed up for the race.

After the race, I went to see Mr Harris.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
A few days later, I signed up for the race. On the race day, I stood nervously at the starting line, surrounded by faster runners. As expected, when the race started, the others sped ahead of me. About halfway through the course, one of the fastest runners tripped and fell. Without thinking, I stopped running and helped him get back on his feet. “Keep going, don’t worry about me,” he said, but I stayed with him. We crossed the finish line together, much slower than everyone else, but we finished side by side.
After the race, I went to see Mr Harris. He smiled when he saw me and said, “What you did today was more important than winning.” At first, I didn’t understand. I didn’t win the race, after all. But he explained, “You helped someone, and that’s something far greater than crossing the finish line first.” At that moment, I realized he was right. The race wasn’t just about speed; it was about determination and compassion. That day, I learned that real success comes from the heart, not from a gold medal.

Of all the challenges ocean creatures are battling luckily sound pollution is the easiest compromise humans can make. Once the noise has decreased, marine life will be able to better manage everything else it is up against.

D It monitors changes in the Earth’s magnetic field.

第二节(满分25分)
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
A few days later, I signed up for the race.
