尤其是时间顺序:afterwards, at first, at last, finally, first, firstly, in the first place, to start with,in the meantime, last, later, next, second, secondly, then, third, thirdly, to begin with以及一些具体的时间。
要注意表示总结的信号词,如therefore, as a result, hence, thus, to sum up, to conclude, in short, in a word等词语,选项中也可发现前文的同义词句。

In The Boy That Could Fly, Michael is an orphan (孤儿) adopted by a loving couple and grows up like any ordinary boy — until something extraordinary happens. 1 Doctors are shocked to discover that his body is developing something impossible: a pair of real, functioning wings.
At first, Michael is amazed by his ability to fly. He flies through the sky, feeling free and weightless, like the birds he’s always admired. 2 News of the “flying boy” spreads quickly, and everyone wants something from him. Scientists demand to study him, convinced he could change human history. Reporters dog him for interviews, turning his life into a freak (怪胎) show. Some criminals kidnap (绑架) him, hoping to profit from his powers. Michael realizes how dangerous his gift really is.
With the help of his adoptive parents and a few loyal friends, Michael fights to regain control of his life. 3 But the world won’t let him. The story follows his struggle to protect his freedom while facing fear, greed, and the cruelty of those who see him as a freak.
4 Michael’s wings make him unique, but they also make him a target. Some people admire him; others want to lock him away. Through his journey, the story asks: What does it mean to be different? Should he hide who he is to fit in; or can he find a way to live openly without fear?
In the end, it’s a tale of courage and belonging. Though Michael’s wings give him the power to fly, his greatest challenge isn’t staying in the air. 5 The author combines fantasy with real-world themes, showing how society treats those who stand out and what it takes to stay true to yourself.
A.But his joy doesn’t last long.
B.It’s finding a place where he can truly land.
C.At first, Michael enjoys his newfound ability.
D.One day, he begins feeling sharp pains in his back.
E.Beyond the adventure, this is a story about acceptance.
F.Now, Michael flies openly, joining rescue teams to save lives.
G.He doesn’t want to be an experiment or a celebrity — he just wants to be himself.

There are all sorts of reasons that someone might be in a coma(昏迷). So, while it’s true that people survive them all the time, it can still be incredibly worrying to experience someone you love being in one. This is something that a man named Kole Larsen understands all too well. 1 Although we don’t know why that was the case, we do know this: Kole thought he was going to lose her.
While visiting Mom, Kole would often sing a song for her — evidence has shown that people in a coma can actually hear what’s going on around them. 2 And one day, Kole had the unexpected opportunity to witness firsthand proof. While he sang, Mom began to tap(轻拍) along.
The pure joy in Kole’s eyes as his mom taps along is indescribable. 3 Best of all, though, Mom went on to make a full recovery! Now, instead of tapping, she’s able to sing right along with him. Our love for one another, and our shared connection to music, are such powerful things!
“If that’not an incredible connection, I don’t know what is,” someone in the comments writes, another adding, “Having a son, I know she fought so hard to stay with you. Perhaps it was the music they’d shared for years—childhood songs, car ride tunes—that bound them closer, proving love and tunes break through even the deepest silence. 4 ”
“Lost my mom in September very suddenly. Keep up holding her tight and making memories,” a thoughtful commenter advises. “ 5 Treasure every hug and every laugh—time waits for no one, and those little moments become the biggest treasures.”
A.At one point, his mom was in a coma.
B.Plenty of research has been done on this.
C.Never know how much you miss her till she is gone.
D.Music has the power to heal both the body and the soul.
E.The doctors were amazed by the mother’s rapid recovery.
F.The shared connection to music is a bridge that hope builds on.
G.This sign of hope must have been exactly what he needed at that moment.

Professional organizer Breaks Down Her Unusual Job
In 2014, Kayleen Kelly took her professional organizing business full-time. She thought she was starting a business that would consist mostly of making messy homes into “beautiful homes” and taking before and after photos. 1
You often think primarily of the type of professional organizer who focuses directly on arranging a beautiful and pleasing space—even one that looks good on Instagram. However, many people who seek out Kelly’s service are struggling with mental health issues, injuries, illness, or are experiencing the death of a loved one. 2 They might not have the mental energy for the projects.
In 2020, Kelly took her experience online in order to help people globally. Her content breaks down her tips and tricks for viewers looking to tidy up their lives. 3 Kelly does all the physical labor of collecting garbage, sorting other items accordingly, cutting out unwanted items and finally, containing what is left (the four steps of the Declutter Core Method) for her clients herself. 4 That is to make the decisions of what to cut and what to clear out.
While Kelly’s job is demanding, what keeps her going is the emotional shift she sees in clients. “When I meet these people, they are saying, ‘Come rescue me, I’m dying,’” she says. “ 5 You can’t beat that. That’s what keeps me coming back.”
A.Kelly has a large following on social media.
B.I see the look on their face at the end of the session.
C.These include what she names “Declutter Core” method.
D.But she soon realized her job was more about the people.
E.There is a lot of shame and prejudice around having messes.

This year, I received an exciting message from the Science Center: out of nearly 2,000 applicants, only 40 high school students were selected to take part in their famous summer program, and I was one of them! 1 .
For the two-week summer program, I chose to focus on a biology project. My research centered on investigating the presence and impact of bacteria (细菌) in different water sources — specifically comparing wild lake water with home pool water to determine which was more harmful. 2 . Those are two fields I’m deeply passionate about.
The laboratory work was challenging but extremely rewarding. I remember the first day I set out to collect water samples. The lake was peaceful, but beneath that calm surface hid something far less harmless. In contrast, the pool’s crystal-clear water seemed almost too clean, and I wondered how the tests would turn out.
3 . The process involved culturing the bacteria, monitoring their growth and comparing the results from both sources. When the data finally came in, it was both shocking and enlightening. The pool water was surprisingly clean, with hardly any bacteria present. On the other hand, the lake water, despite its beautiful appearance, was full of bacteria — definitely not safe for drinking. 4 .
Once my experiments were complete, I poured all my energy into writing a detailed report. On the last day of the program, I had the opportunity to present my work to a group of 15 mentors (导师). 5 — I was not just a student; I was like a scientist sharing my discoveries with the world.
A.Back in the lab, I analyzed the samples
B.Standing before them, explaining my project, I felt proud
C.I hope to undertake a biomedical project at the Science Center
D.My time at the Science Center has given me a clear sense of purpose
E.These results highlighted the hidden dangers that untreated water can pose
F.The moment I opened that letter, I knew this was going to be a life-changing experience
G.This topic interested me because it combined both environmental science and public health

Finding My True Path
My journey began with struggle. After graduating with psychology and art degrees, I expected to become a psychologist or artist. 1 Holding two degrees, I realized I was exhausted from forcing myself into roles that never fit — like wearing shoes two sizes too small.
2 I came to accept my stress limits after repeated burnout. Albert Einstein’s words hit hard: expecting different results from repeated failures is unwise. I stopped wasting energy on unsustainable paths I didn’t truly want. My compass reset: Only pursue what I can sustain and truly value.
It was during this period of reflection that a long-buried passion quietly resurfaced — writing. When I shared this with Elena, an artist friend, her eyes lit up. “True passion turns discipline into joy, never duty.” she emphasized. 3 I realized true passion is written in the soul; when accepted, regular practice flows naturally, becoming the true path to mastery.
Fueled by this clarity, I took concrete steps. I carved out precious, daily writing time, starting small and manageable. 4 Then came the real test: when a high-paying job demanded overtime that would steal my writing time, I firmly declined. It wasn’t sacrifice (牺牲); it was claiming my truth. I wrote with focus I never knew in offices.
Making space for what mattered transformed everything. Regular writing brought peace and direction. Though money remains a necessity, working with passion unlocks hidden doors within. Purpose isn’t found in distant dreams. 5 When you swim in the right direction, the stream of life will carry you where you’re meant to be.
A.These words struck me deeply.
B.This requires exceptional talent.
C.It grows through daily chosen actions.
D.Years of exhaustion became my wake-up call.
E.I landed a dream job as a school mental health adviser.
F.This meant a daily routine of putting down 500 words.
G.The reality was years of bouncing from one office job to another.

The Unexpected Gift
It was a freezing December afternoon when I noticed an old man struggling with grocery bags at a bus stop. Snowflakes danced in the air as his thin coat shook in the wind, revealing worn-out clothes. His wrinkled hands shook visibly while trying to secure a slipping bag of oranges.
1 Without thinking, I turned back and lifted two heaviest bags. His surprised smile exposed several missing teeth, but his eyes shone like polished stones. On the crowded bus, he told me in a dry voice how his wife had passed away last spring, leaving him alone in a small apartment.
As the bus approached Pine Street, he suddenly grasped my shoulder. 2 “For your kindness,” he whispered, pressing something cold into my hand before disappearing into the snow.
Opening my hand under a streetlight, I froze. 3 A silver pocket watch with delicate leaf patterns lay polished and bright; its chain lay loosely like a sleeping snake. The Roman numerals (数字) on its face reminded me of my grandfather’s clock.
After three hours of online searching, I discovered it was a 1920s collector’s item. My throat tightened seeing auction (拍卖) listings with prices that could cover my college textbooks for two years. 4
There was no question about what I needed to do. 5 But the weeping neighbor told me that the old man had passed away peacefully in his favorite armchair, holding a photo of his late wife.
A.I rushed to his building at dawn.
B.Something warm arose in my chest.
C.I almost continued walking to catch my movie.
D.“Young man,” he said with unexpected firmness.
E.Guilt and curiosity fought in my mind all evening.

My adventure into rock climbing started with a chat on the Internet with Octavia. 1 Climbing has a bad reputation because of occasional accidents, and I was doubtful about how safe it could be. I wanted to find out for myself.
Octavia was super friendly and told me about her climbing journey. 2 They’ve built a life around their love for climbing, spending days in nature with friends. Their story inspired me, showing that you can live unconventionally and still be happy.
Octavia invited me to climb near Brasov, a beautiful place in Romania. I was excited to meet her and experience climbing firsthand. She was patient, teaching me the basics and making sure I had the right equipment. 3
We met in Zǎrnesti and headed to Prǎpǎstiile Zǎrnestilor, a great spot for climbing. The place was crowded with climbers of all ages. Octavia explained the safety features, like ropes and belay (保护) systems, which made me feel secure. 4 It was exciting and tiring, but I felt a sense of achievement. They kept encouraging me, and I kept trying.
Climbing isn’t just physical; it’s also mental. I had to solve problems and find ways to move up. Octavia’s guidance made the experience unforgettable. That day, I realized climbing is more than a sport; it’s a way of life. It’s about shared passion. 5 The world of rock climbing had enticed (吸引) me, and Octavia’s firm support ensured that I would answer that call.

Tom Brown’s hands move fast, tying loose shoelaces (鞋带) as the morning bell rings. Tom works at a small table outside Central High’s front door. An old box sits next to him. 1 “Hurry up, kid—don’t be late for class,” he smiles, giving back a pair of shoes to a first-year student, who says a quick “thanks” and runs inside.
At 6:00 a.m., Tom is there, carrying the table from the storage room. 2 He’s always wearing a faded blue jacket with signs from years of different jobs—fixing cars, putting up walls and roofs, and now this. “These kids are in such a rush that they don’t see their shoelaces are broken until it’s too late,” he laughs, remembering how he started 12 years ago. He saw a girl crying because her shoelace broke before a big P.E. test. 3
Lily Smith, a senior, comes by twice a week. “My little sister’s shoelaces always get broken, and Mr. Brown fixes them in two minutes,” she says, adjusting her bag. “He remembers everyone’s name. It’s like having a grandpa at school.” Tom never asks for money, but students leave him candy, or drawings. 4 His wife died five years ago, and his grown kids live in other states. “Being here keeps me feeling young,” he says, wiping a dirty shoe.
5 But just ask any student or teacher—Tom is often the first person they see when they walk in each day. “Quit? No way,” he says happily, waving to a group of 10th graders. “These shoes won’t fix themselves.”

Need a quick answer or just a smart assistant in your pocket? The AI companion offers exactly that—and much more.
Alex Chen, the lead AI developer behind this project, wears his signature hoodie (连帽衫) and glasses as he adjusts the system daily. His goal? 1 The AI processes requests in milliseconds, responding with clear, well-structured answers. When users engage with it, a friendly “How can I assist you today?” sets the tone—a small but meaningful touch that makes the exchange feel personal. Even during peak hours, when thousands of requests flood in all at once, the AI remains reliable, never sacrificing speed or accuracy.
Chen’s day begins at 5:30 a.m., reviewing user feedback and working on the AI’s learning models. 2 “I want this technology to feel effortless— like chatting with a knowledgeable friend,” he explains. His passion for AI arises from years of studying machine learning, but what truly drives him is making complex tech accessible to everyone.
3 Lisa Park, a university student majoring in computer science, relies on the AI daily. “It’s not just about getting answers— it’s how the AI explains things. Even difficult concepts become easy to grasp,” she says. For her, the AI isn’t just a tool. 4 Another user, Mark Reynolds, a freelance writer, adds, “It helps me brainstorm ideas faster than I could alone. The suggestions are creative and actually useful.”
“ I can’t imagine working on anything else,” Chen admits. 5 His team is already testing new features, like voice interaction and real-time language translation, to expand its capabilities.
A.It’s a study partner that adapts to her learning style.
B.To ensure every interaction feels natural and helpful.
C.He organizes weekly user meetings to collect advice.
D.After five years of refining the AI, he’s determined to make it smarter.
E.Some mornings, he logs in early to push updates before users wake up.
F.What Chen might not realize is how much his work impacts daily lives.
G.Not only does it provide instant solutions, it also offers human-like experience.

I started playing hockey (冰球) at the tender young age of 50, because both my 8-year-old and 4-year-old sons wanted to play. When I later became an assistant coach, I realized I knew very little about the game (my hockey skills were even worse). I had skated on ponds as a kid and could go forward, but had little ability to turn or go backwards. 1 But once each reached the 4th grade, their skills quickly surpassed (超过) mine! This made me realize that ice hockey was not just a game for kids; it was a sport that could be enjoyed and improved upon at any age.
2 They went with their age group, while I skated with the men’s group, who, like me, wanted to get better. In high school, my sons got much better, and one even made All State for his final two years. 3 But I still really loved the sport. I also needed to find a year-round form of good exercise and, even better, a sense of trust and friendship.
Little did I know that playing hockey would allow me to make contacts across a variety of business enterprises, some that have helped me professionally in my own business, but also personally with my neighbors and service providers, such as contractors and electricians. 4 I’ve also become involved in helping to run a charity event that involves setting up a men’s competition to play in Madison Square Garden — a great opportunity to give back to the community. 5
A.As my sons got better, so did I.
B.We often watched hockey on weekends at home.
C.Every summer, we went to hockey camps in Canada.
D.I had to give up my job to play hockey with my sons.
E.Additionally, I’ve made connections with those in public service.
F.In contrast, there is no room for further development of my ability.
G.All of this has been made possible because of my involvement in the game of hockey.

The place wasn’t entirely authentic, though. Unlike a normal Parisian apartment, the plumbing ( 水 管 ) worked. ____37____Our building even had a tiny lift with a female voice that said, “Ouverture des portes,” in perfect French. That is the only French phrase I mastered, and it’s a shame I don’t have much use for it.
Parisians are different from you and me. They never look lazy or untidy. As someone noted in this paper a couple of weeks ago, they eat great food and never gain weight. ____38____ French strawberries do not taste like cardboard. Instead, they explode in your mouth like little flavor bombs.
____39____ On our first morning in Paris, I went around the corner to the food market to pick up some groceries. I bought a handful of perfectly ripe small strawberries and a little sweet melon. My husband and I agreed they were the best fruit we had ever eaten. But they cost $18!
In France, quality of life is much more important than efficiency.
You can tell this by cafés life. French cafés are always crowded.____40____When do these people work? You've got mail…and it's a postcard
Paulo Magalhaes, a 34-year-old Portuguese computer engineer, loves to open his mailbox and find a brightly colored picture of Rome's Colosseum. Or Africa's Victoria Falls. Or China's Great Wall. ___11___
"I often send postcards to family and friends." he says to China Daily, "but you can imagine that after a while, you never receive as many as you send, and you realize that not everyone is into it ___12___ ” Seeking other like-minded souls, however, Paulo started looking in a somewhat unlikely place: online. Many would say the Internet is a place for people who have given up on the traditional postal service, but Paulo's hunch(直觉)paid off.
Today his hobby has developed into the website postcrossing.com, a social network that has grown to 575,217 registered users in 214 countries and regions since he started it 10 years ago. ___13___ Running the website has almost turned into a full-time job.
Language is certainly a harrier for many people. For postcrossing to work worldwide, a common communication language is needed so that everyone can understand each other. As cool as it may be to receive a postcard written in Chinese, the concept doesn't work if one doesn't understand it. ___14___ So a common language is required and in postcrossing that's English since it's widely spoken.
"Many people in China have limited exposure to English. ___15___ That said, we know of many postcrossing members, including Chinese, who have actually improved their English skills through their use of postcrossing," Paulo says.
A. And that's totally fine
B. That makes it extra hard to learn and practice it
C. He likes to think of sending postcards as a family-friendly hobby
D. Many love to make a connection with someone from across the world.
E. On August 5, the number of postcards exchanged by members topped 31 million.
F. Similarly, if you speak only Chinese, receiving a card in Swedish takes part of the fun away.
G. In short, he loves postcards, and the excitement of getting a hand-written note from someone far away.
Much of the work in today’s world is accomplished(完成)in teams. Most people believe the best way to build a great team is to gather a group of the most talented individuals._____46_____Companies spend millions hiring top business people. Is their money well spent?
___47___They focused on football, basketball and baseball. The results are mixed For football and basketball, adding talented players to a team proves a good method, but only up to the point where 70% of the players are top talent;above that level, the team’s performance begins to decline. Interestingly, this trend isn’t evident in baseball. where additional individual talent keeps improving the team’s performance.
To explain this phenomenon, the researchers explored the degree to which a good performance by a team requires its members to coordinate(协调)their actions.______48______In baseball, the performance of individual players is less dependent on teammates. They conclude that when task interdependence is high, team performance will suffer when there is too much talent, while individual talent will have positive effects on team performance when task interdependence is lower. If a basketball star is. for example, trying to gain a high personal point total,he may take a shot himself when it would be better to pass the ball to a teammate, affecting the team's performance. Young children learning to play team sports are often told,“There is no I in TEAM.”___49___
Another possibility is that when there is a lot of talent on a team, some players may make less effort. Just as in a game of tug-of-war(拔河比赛),whenever a person is added, everyone else pulls the rope with less force.
___50___.An A-team may require a balance-not just A players,but a few generous B players as well.
A. It's not a simple matter to determine the nature of talent.
B. Sports team owners spend millions of dollars attracting top talent
C. The group interaction and its effect drew the researchers' attention.
D. Stars apparently do not follow this basic principle of sportsmanship.
E. Several recent studies examined the role of talent in the sports world.
F. Building up a dream team is more complex than simply hiring the best talent.
G. This task interdependence distinguishes baseball from football and basketball.
If anyone had told me three years ago that I would be spending most of my weekends camping, I would have laughed heartily. Campers, in my eyes, were people who enjoyed insect bites, ill-cooked meals, and uncomfortable sleeping bags. They had nothing in common with me. 36
The friends who introduced me to camping thought that it meant to be a pioneer. 37 We slept in a tent, cooked over an open fire, and walked a long distance to take the shower and use the bathroom. This brief visit with Mother Nature cost me two days off from work, recovering from a bad case of sunburn and the doctor’s bill for my son’s food poisoning.
I was, nevertheless, talked into going on another fun-filled holiday in the wilderness. 38 Instead, we had a pop-up camper with comfortable beds and an air conditioner. My nature-loving friends had remembered to bring all the necessities of life.
39 We have done a lot of it since. Recently, we bought a twenty-eight-foot travel trailer complete with a bathroom and a built-in TV set. There is a separate bedroom, a modern kitchen with a refrigerator. The trailer even has matching carpet and curtains.
40 It must be true that sooner or later, everyone finds his or her way back to nature. I recommend that you find your way in style.
A. This time there was no tent.
B. Things are going to be improved.
C. The trip they took me on was a rough one.
D. I was to learn a lot about camping since then, however.
E. I must say that I have certainly come to enjoy camping.

Five Things Nobody Told Me about College
As I type this, I am in my university dorm room. A year ago, when I was awaiting to hear the results of my college applications, I often went to websites for some type of insider look on what college would be like. However, there’s only so much that prep books, websites, and older friends can teach. Here are the top 5 things nobody told me about college:
61.
Nobody entering a university knows exactly what they want to study. If they tell you otherwise, they’re lying and will probably change what they want to pursue within the first quarter of attendance. During my first quarter at University of California, Riverside(UCR), I thought that I wanted to study Political Science with its focus on International Affairs, so that’s what I applied for. However, once I worked with statewide and local government, I realized that a better fit for me would be Public Policy, and now I am in the process of changing my area.
62.
In college, there are so many good chances for you to meet your expectations. However, there is a very important difference between wanting to do something and applying for something. In order for you to take full advantage of the conferences, research, internships(实习), and fellowships that your university offers, apply! Step into your academic advisor’s office, introduce yourself, and begin making the valuable connections that are necessary to help during the rest of your college career. Great things happen when you step out of your comfort zone, and you would be surprised on how many chances exist if you just ask.
63.
College is where you meet your bridesmaids, groomsmen, neighbors, and potential bosses. The relationships you develop now will probably be linked to the ones you value later, so be wise about the people who you invest yourself in. You are only one person, and you do not have time to waste on people who would rather cause drama or mess up with your purpose. Surround yourself with uplifting individuals who challenge you to be better while loving you for who you are, and be patient to the people who are the complete opposite of that description.
64.
As a first-year, I was afraid to make any noise towards campus issues that I noticed. It was not until I became involved in student government that I gained the confidence to handle projects that I created with the help of ASUCR Office of the President. During my first quarter, I spoke directly to the Chancellor(校长), asking him for support towards my initiatives(提议), met with the Vice Chancellors, and cooperated with my teaching assistants to begin my undergraduate research project. Nothing good will happen when you are silent.
65.
At my high school, there were about only four active clubs and organizations that students could be a part of. Imagine my surprise when I stepped foot onto UCR’s campus, where over 400 organizations exist, ranging from political organizations to karate club. You are not paying all of your tuition(学费) to merely go to class, study, pass tests and graduate. Make something worthy out of your experience. Create stories that you will want to tell your grandchildren one day. It all begins here, by signing up to join an organization.

1.由上文“In The Boy That Could Fly, Michael is an orphan adopted by a loving couple and grows up like any ordinary boy — until something extraordinary happens.(在《能飞的男孩》中,迈克尔是一个被慈爱夫妇收养的孤儿,像普通男孩一样长大——直到发生了一件非同寻常的事)”可知,本空应描述这件“非同寻常的事”是如何开始的。D选项“One day, he begins feeling sharp pains in his back.(有一天,他开始感到背部剧烈疼痛)”自然引出下文“Doctors are shocked to discover that his body is developing something impossible: a pair of real, functioning wings.(医生震惊地发现他的身体正在发育出不可能的东西:一对真正能运作的翅膀)”,“sharp pains in his back”正是翅膀生长的前兆,逻辑衔接紧密。故选D。
2.由上文“At first, Michael is amazed by his ability to fly. He flies through the sky, feeling free and weightless, like the birds he’s always admired.(起初,迈克尔对自己的飞行能力感到惊奇。 故选A。
3.由上文“With the help of his adoptive parents and a few loyal friends, Michael fights to regain control of his life.(在养父母和几位忠诚朋友的帮助下,迈克尔努力夺回对自己生活的控制权)”以及下文“But the world won’t let him.(但世界不会让他如愿)”可知,本空应表达迈克尔的内心愿望或斗争动机。G选项“He doesn’t want to be an experiment or a celebrity — he just wants to be himself.(他不想成为一个实验品或名人——他只想做自己)”深刻揭示了他抗争的本质:追求自我认同与平凡生活,与下文“the cruelty of those who see him as a freak(那些视他为怪胎的人的残忍)”形成对比,情感连贯。故选G。
4.下文“Michael’s wings make him unique, but they also make him a target. Some people admire him; others want to lock him away. Through his journey, the story asks: What does it mean to be different? Should he hide who he is to fit in; or can he find a way to live openly without fear?(迈克尔的翅膀让他与众不同,但也让他成为了目标。有些人钦佩他;有些人想把他关起来。通过他的旅程,这个故事提出了一个问题:与众不同意味着什么?他应该隐藏自己的身份以融入其中;还是他能找到一种毫无恐惧地公开生活的方式?)”围绕“与众不同以及如何被接受”展开讨论。E选项“Beyond the adventure, this is a story about acceptance.(除了冒险,这是一个关于接受的故事)”能够概括下文的核心内容,引出下文关于与众不同和接受的主题探讨。故选E。
5.由上文“Though Michael’s wings give him the power to fly, his greatest challenge isn’t staying in the air.(尽管迈克尔的翅膀赋予他飞行的能力,但他最大的挑战不是停留在空中)”可知,本空应说明他真正的挑战是什么。

【答案】1.A 2.B 3.G 4.D 5.C
1.由上文“This is something that a man named Kole Larsen understands all too well.(这一点,一个名叫科尔・拉森的男人再清楚不过了。)”和下文“Although we don’t know why that was the case, we do know this: Kole thought he was going to lose her.(虽然我们不知道为什么会这样,但我们知道:科尔以为他要失去她了。)” A项“At one point, his mom was in a coma.(曾有一段时间,他的母亲陷入了昏迷。)”符合语境,“his mom”即下文“her”的指代对象,“was in a coma”呼应前文“someone you love being in one”,解释了科尔“以为要失去她”的原因,承上启下。故选A项。
2.由上文“While visiting Mom, Kole would often sing a song for her — evidence has shown that people in a coma can actually hear what’s going on around them.(探望母亲时,科尔经常为她唱歌 —— 有证据表明,昏迷中的人实际上能听到周围发生的事情。)”和下文“And one day, Kole had the unexpected opportunity to witness firsthand proof.(后来有一天,科尔意外地有机会亲眼见证了证据。)” B项“Plenty of research has been done on this.(关于这一点,已经进行了大量研究。)”符合语境,“this”指代“people in a coma can actually hear what’s going on around them”,“Plenty of research”补充了“evidence”的具体形式,为下文“亲眼见证证据”做铺垫,逻辑连贯。故选B项。
3.由上文“The pure joy in Kole’s eyes as his mom taps along is indescribable.(当妈妈跟着节奏轻拍时,科尔眼中纯粹的喜悦难以形容。)”和下文“Best of all, though, Mom went on to make a full recovery!(不过,最棒的是,妈妈最终完全康复了!)” G项“This sign of hope must have been exactly what he needed at that moment.(这个希望的信号一定正是他当时所需要的。)”符合语境,“This sign of hope”指代 “mom taps along”,“exactly what he needed”呼应“pure joy in Kole’s eyes”,衔接下文“完全康复”的积极结果,情感连贯。故选G项。
4.由上文“Perhaps it was the music they’d shared for years—childhood songs, car ride tunes—that bound them closer, proving love and tunes break through even the deepest silence.(或许正是他们多年来共同分享的音乐 —— 童年歌曲、车载旋律 —— 让他们的联系更加紧密,也证明了爱与旋律即便能穿透最深沉的寂静。)” 空格处需承接“音乐的力量”这一核心,D项“Music has the power to heal both the body and the soul.(音乐拥有治愈身心的力量。)”
5.由上文“Lost my mom in September very suddenly. Keep up holding her tight and making memories,(我在9月突然失去了母亲。一定要紧紧抱着她,创造回忆,)”和下文“Treasure every hug and every laugh—time waits for no one, and those little moments become the biggest treasures.(珍惜每一个拥抱,每一次欢笑 —— 时光不等人,那些微小的瞬间会成为最珍贵的宝藏。)” C项“Never know how much you miss her till she is gone.(直到她离开,你才知道自己有多想念她。)”符合语境,“Never know how much you miss her till she is gone”承接前文“突然失去母亲”的经历,与下文“珍惜当下”的建议形成因果,情感真挚。故选C项。

F.They are willing to tidy up but might not know where to start.
G.So they can save mental energy for the toughest part of the job.
1.前文提到“She thought she was starting a business that would consist mostly of making messy homes into “beautiful homes” and taking before and after photos.(2014 年,凯琳·凯利(Kayleen Kelly)将她的专业整理业务转为全职经营。她原以为自己开启的这项事业,主要就是将杂乱无章的家打造成“温馨美宅”,然后拍摄整理前后的对比照片。)”,说明她原本以为自己的工作主要是把杂乱的房子变成漂亮的房子并拍照。而后文又指出“However, many people who seek out Kelly’s service are struggling with mental health issues, injuries, illness, or are experiencing the death of a loved one.(然而,许多寻求凯利服务的人都正遭受着心理健康问题、伤痛、疾病的困扰,或是正经历着亲人离世的悲痛。)” 前后形成转折关系,所以这里用D选项“But she soon realized her job was more about the people.(但她很快意识到,她的工作更多的是与别人打交道。)”
2.此空前面“However, many people who seek out Kelly’s service are struggling with mental health issues, injuries, illness, or are experiencing the death of a loved one.(然而,许多寻求凯利服务的人都正遭受着心理健康问题、伤痛、疾病的困扰,或是正经历着亲人离世的悲痛。)”描述了寻求服务的人有各种困难状况,后面“They might not have the mental energy for the projects.(他们可能没有精力去开展整理项目。)” 那么中间应该是说他们有整理的意愿,只是不知道从哪里开始,F选项“They are willing to tidy up but might not know where to start.(他们愿意整理,但可能不知道从哪里开始。)”
3.前文“Her content breaks down her tips and tricks for viewers looking to tidy up their lives.(她的内容为那些想要整理生活的人详细讲解了各种小窍门。)” 所以这里用C选项“These include what she names “Declutter Core” method.(其中包括她所称的“核心整理”方法。)”
4.前文“Kelly does all the physical labor of collecting garbage, sorting other items accordingly, cutting out unwanted items and finally, containing what is left (the four steps of the Declutter Core Method) for her clients herself.(Kelly会亲自为客户完成所有的体力劳动,包括收集垃圾、对其他物品进行分类、剔除不需要的物品,最后整理好剩下的东西(这就是“整理核心法”的四个步骤)。)” 那么空格处应该是说明她这样做的原因,G选项“So they can save mental energy for the toughest part of the job.(这样他们就可以为工作中最困难的部分节省精力。)”
后文说“You can’t beat that. That’s what keeps me coming back.(没有什么能比得上这种感觉。这就是让我不断坚持下去的原因。)”说明没有什么能比得上这个,这就是让她坚持回来的原因。那么中间应该是描述让她坚持的原因的具体内容,B选项“I see the look on their face at the end of the session.(在服务结束时,我看到他们脸上的表情。)”

【答案】1.F 2.G 3.A 4.E 5.B
1.前文“This year, I received an exciting message from the Science Center: out of nearly 2,000 applicants, only 40 high school students were selected to take part in their famous summer program, and I was one of them!
2.前文“My research centered on investigating the presence and impact of bacteria (细菌) in different water sources — specifically comparing wild lake water with home pool water to determine which was more harmful. (我的研究聚焦于检测不同水源中细菌的存在及其影响——通过对比天然湖泊水和家用泳池水,分析哪一类水源的危害性更大)”提到“我”研究不同水源中的细菌,后文“Those are two fields I’m deeply passionate about. (这两个领域正是我深深热爱的研究方向)”强调“我”热爱这两个领域,因此G项“This topic interested me because it combined both environmental science and public health (这个课题吸引我,因为它结合了环境科学和公共卫生)”符合语境,解释“我”选择该课题的动机,承前启后,其中的“environmental science and public health”是后文的“two fields”所指的对象。故选G。
3.前一段落主要描述“我”外出采集水样的过程,后文“The process involved culturing the bacteria, monitoring their growth and comparing the results from both sources. When the data finally came in, it was both shocking and enlightening. (实验过程包括培养细菌、监测其生长状况,并对两种水源的检测结果进行对比分析。当最终数据出炉时,结果既令人震惊又发人深省)”说明实验过程以及数据结果,因此A项“Back in the lab, I analyzed the samples (回到实验室后,我分析了样本)”符合语境,指出回到实验室的工作,作为实验阶段的起始句,自然过渡到具体操作。故选A。
4.前文“The pool water was surprisingly clean, with hardly any bacteria present. On the other hand, the lake water, despite its beautiful appearance, was full of bacteria — definitely not safe for drinking. (泳池水样异常洁净,几乎检测不到细菌存在。另一方面,看似清澈的湖水却含有大量细菌——显然达不到饮用水安全标准)”对比了泳池水和湖水的细菌检测结果,因此E项“These results highlighted the hidden dangers that untreated water can pose (这些结果凸显了未经处理水源的潜在危害)”符合语境,总结实验发现,承接前文。故选E。
5.前文“On the last day of the program, I had the opportunity to present my work to a group of 15 mentors (导师). (在项目的最后一天,我有幸向15位导师组成的专家组汇报了我的研究成果)”提到“我”向导师展示报告,后文“I was not just a student; I was like a scientist sharing my discoveries with the world. (此时的我已不仅是一名学生,而更像是向世界分享发现的科学家)”升华“我”的感受,因此B项“Standing before them, explaining my project, I felt proud (站在他们面前讲解项目时,我感到自豪)”符合语境,描述“我”汇报时的感受,其中的“proud”与后文的“not just a student”和“a scientist sharing my discoveries with the world”呼应。故选B。

【答案】1.G 2.D 3.A 4.F 5.C
1.上文“After graduating with psychology and art degrees, I expected to become a psychologist or artist.(在获得心理学和艺术学位后,我希望成为一名心理学家或艺术家)”提到作者获得学位后希望成为一名心理学家或艺术家,下文“Holding two degrees, I realized I was exhausted from forcing myself into roles that never fit— like wearing shoes two sizes too small.(拥有两个学位的我意识到,强迫自己扮演不合适的角色——比如穿小了两个码的鞋子——让我筋疲力尽)”提到作者强迫自己扮演不合适的角色,由此推知作者没有按希望的那样成为心理学家或艺术家,而是尝试了不同的工作,G项“事实是,我多年来一直从一个办公室的工作换到另一个”符合语境,故选G。
2.根据下文“I came to accept my stress limits after repeated burnout. Albert Einstein’s words hit hard: expecting different results from repeated failures is unwise. I stopped wasting energy on unsustainable paths I didn’t truly want. My compass reset: Only pursue what I can sustain and truly value.(在多次精疲力竭之后,我开始接受自己的压力极限。阿尔伯特·爱因斯坦的话给了我们很大的打击:期待从反复的失败中得到不同的结果是不明智的。我不再把精力浪费在我并不真正想要的不可持续的道路上。我的指南针重新设定了:只追求我能坚持和真正重视的东西)”可知,作者在万分疲惫之后开始醒悟:不再浪费精力,而是只去追求自己能坚持和真正重视的东西,D项“多年的疲惫给我敲响了警钟”符合语境,故选D。
3.上文“True passion turns discipline into joy, never duty.(真正的激情会把纪律变成快乐,而不是责任)”是作者的艺术家朋友Elena说的话,下文“I realized true passion is written in the soul; when accepted, regular practice flows naturally, becoming the true path to mastery.(我意识到真正的激情是写在灵魂里的;一旦被接受,常规练习就会自然而然地进行,成为通往精通的真正道路)”是作者的感悟。
5.上文“Purpose isn’t found in distant dreams.(目标不是在遥远的梦想中找到)”提到,目标不是在遥远的梦想中找到,空处应是接着说实现目标的正确做法,C项“它通过每天选择的行动而成长”符合语境,和下文内容“When you swim in the right direction, the stream of life will carry you where you’re meant to be.(当你朝正确的方向游泳时,生活的溪流会把你带到你应该去的地方)”呼应,故选C。

36.上文“My husband and I just spent a week in Paris.(我丈夫和我刚在巴黎待了一周)”说明了背景;下文“So the first thing we did was rent a fantastically expensive sixth-floor apartment the size of a cupboard.(所以我们做的第一件事就是租了一个非常昂贵公寓,在第六层,只有一个橱柜那么大)”是空格处的结果,因此空格处需要填原因;根据F项“Our aim was to see if we could live, in some way, like real Parisians.(我们的目标是看看我们是否在某种程度上可以活的像巴黎人。)”
C项“There was a nice kitchen and a comfortable bed.(有一个漂亮的厨房和一张舒适的床)”提到了厨房和床,这些都属于公寓的配置。故选C项。
38.上文“... they eat great food and never gain weight.(他们吃得很好,而且从不发胖)”提及了食物。下文“French strawberries do not taste like cardboard. Instead, they explode in your mouth like little flavor bombs.(法国草莓尝起来不像纸板。相反,它们会像小炸弹一样在你嘴里爆炸)”在说明法国的草莓很好吃。上下文结合可知,因为法国的食物质量很高,所以不用吃很多就能很满足,同时吃的少也就不会发胖了。G项“The food is so delicious that you don’t need much of it to make you happy. (食物是如此美味,你不需要吃太多就能使你快乐)”符合语境要求。故选G项。
39.第三段主要描述了作者夫妻去了采购了食物,买了草莓。下文“My husband and I agreed they were the best fruit we had ever eaten. But they cost $18!(我丈夫和我都认为这是我们吃过的最好的水果。但它们要18美元!)”说明法国的水果好吃但是也很贵。选项E“That's not the only reason the French eat less than we do.(这并不是法国人吃得比我们少的唯一原因)”承接了上一段关于法国人吃的少但是不胖的话题,同时引起下文,给出了法国人吃的少的另一个原因‘物价贵’。故选E项。
40.根据上文“In France, quality of life is much more important than efficiency (效率). You can tell this by cafés life. French cafés are always crowded. (在法国生活质量比效率更重要。这一点你能从咖啡馆生活看出来。法国的咖啡厅总是很拥挤)”可知,上文说明了法国人对待工作不是很积极且咖啡厅里顾客很多。下文“When do these people work?(这些人什么时候工作?)” 故选A项。
G 12. A 13. E 14. F 15. B
上文“Paulo Magalhaes, a 34-year-old Portuguese computer engineer, loves to open his mailbox and find a brightly colored image of Rome's Colosseum. Or Africa's Victoria Falls. Or China’s Great Wall.( 34岁的葡萄牙电脑工程师Paulo Magalhaes喜欢打开他的邮箱,然后发现一个色彩鲜艳的罗马斗牛场图像。或者非洲的维多利亚瀑布。或者是中国的长城)”介绍了Paulo喜欢明信片的个人爱好。下文“... and you realize that not everyone is into it.” G“In short, he loves postcards, and the excitement of getting a scribbled note from someone far away.(简而言之,他喜欢明信片,也喜欢收到远方某人潦草的便条时的那种兴奋)”起到承上启下的作用,总结了上文Paulo喜欢明信片,也引出下文关于他的喜好得不到回应的问题。故选G项。
上文““I often send postcards to family and friends." he says to China Daily, “but you can imagine that after a while, you never receive as many as you send, and you realize that not everyone is into it(“我经常给家人和朋友寄明信片, ”他说,“但你可以想象,过一段时间,你收到的明信片不会像你寄的那么多,而且你意识到并不是每个人都喜欢这样。”)”说明Paulo意识到身边的亲人和朋友不是都和他有相同的爱好,因此他也很坦然接受这个事实,因此选项A“那完全没问题”符合语境。故选A项。
上文“Today his hobby has evolved into the website Postcrossing.com, a social network that has grown to 575,217 registered users in 214 countries and regions since he launched it 10 years ago.(如今,他的这个爱好已经发展成了Postcrossing.com这个社交网站。自从10年前他创建这个网站以来,已经有来自214个国家和地区的575217名注册用户)”是在介绍目前网站的发展状况,因此符合文意的只有E选项“8月5日,会员互赠的明信片数量达到3100万张”是在介绍该网站相关的数据。故选E项。
【14题详解】
上文“As cool as it may be to receive a postcard written in Chinese, the concept doesn't work if one doesn't understand it.(收到一张用中文写明信片可能很酷,但如果你不理解它,这个概念就行不通)”是举例说明他国人收到中文明信片时的问题。选项F“Similarly, if you speak only Chinese, receiving a card written in Swedish takes part of the fun away.(同样地,如果你只会说中文,收到瑞典语的卡片也会夺走一部分乐趣)”是举例说明中国人收到他国语言明信片时也会遇到相同的问题。
上文“Many people in China have limited exposure to English.(许多中国人很少能接触到英语)”说明对某些人来说学习英语的门槛较高。结合下文“... who actually improved their English skills through their use of postcrossing.(他们实际上通过使用明信片来提高他们的英语技能)”可知,写明信片成为一种练习英语的渠道。
