Life can feel terribly unfair. However, for some people, when life hands them the worst
lemon, they try their best to make a lemonade.
Jessie Joy Rees is just such a person. The blonde-haired,California kid with the big
personality as fun as a day at the beach became the voice of courage for kids with cancer.
Athletic and energetic,Jessie had her whole world in front of her until she was diagnosed with
an inoperable brain tumor()in2011.Doctors estimated that she had just 1%chance of
survival and less than a year to live. With no other treatment options, her family entered Jessie
for a clinical trial. For weeks she underwent 30 rounds of radiotherapy.Amazingly, the pain
and uncertainty never lessened her shine, and Jessie always remained positive throughout it all.
Three weeks into her treatment,Jessie asked a mature question for such a young girl.
Looking out at the other children who were also going through cancer treatment, she asked her
parents:"How can we help them?""She was determined to make other cancer kids happy,"her
father Erik tenderly remembers."How could we not help?"
Though 12-year-old Jessie had a slight chance of beating cancer, she resolved to make the
most of her time. The morning after her diagnosis,Jessie was at the kitchen table packing bags
of toys for other cancer patients. The packages became hospital-safe plastic jars stuffed with
toys, crafts and activities to surprise children while they are in the hospital for treatment.
JoyJars, named after Jessie's middle name, contain a little bit of fun during ordinary days, but
mostly they contain a little bit of Jessie's positive attitude that fills the room every time one is
opened.
Jessie Joy Rees,a special soul who could radiate so much good in so short a time, passed
away less than a year from her diagnosis. But her parents keep the joy alive.More than
400,000 JoyJars have been delivered to children undergoing cancer treatment in all 50 states
and over 50 countries, with each stamped with her life philosophy"Never Ever Give Up".

Music is not just a set of sounds and rhythms. Its influence on the brain is much deeper
than any other human experience.Keep on reading to know all about the amazing power of
music.
A recent study suggests that preterm (babies appear to experience less pain and
feed more when listening to music.A team of experts led by Dr.Manoj Kumar of University of
Alberta,Canada, found that music had a beneficial effect on reducing pain for preterm babies
experiencing painful medical tests. It also appeared to benefit full-term babies during
operations.
Many people experiencing brain damage have speech and movement-related problems.
Music can help them recover from brain injuries. As a different and effective treatment,
doctors often advise such patients to listen to good music to improve the parts of the brain
responsible for these two functions. When people with neurological(神经系统的)disorders
hear a musical beat,it helps them to regain a balanced walk.
Though music cannot make deafness disappear,it can really stave off the loss of hearing.
There was an experiment involving 163 people where 74 were musicians.Participants were
asked to pass some listening tests.Musicians heard the sounds better than non-musicians,and
this difference got clearer with age. This means that a 70-year-old musician hears better than a
50-year-old non-musician,even in a noisy environment.
Besides,music mends a broken heart.It is not about thrown-away love,but about a heart
attack. The matter is that music can help people recover from a heart attack or a heart operation
by reducing blood pressure, slowing down the heartbeat rate, and reducing anxiety.Listening
to the quality music produces positive emotions, improves the movement of blood, and
expands blood vessels, thus, promoting quick recovery of the whole cardiovascular(心血管的)
system
28.How does music affect preterm babies?
A.It helps reduce their pain.
B.It helps develop their potential in music
C.It helps improve their hearing systems.D.It helps repair their cardiovascular systems.
29.What does the underlined phrase"stave off"in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Lead to.
B.Increase.
C.Prevent.
D.Break into
30.Why can music mend a broken heart?
A.It helps people recover at once
B.It makes a person feel optimistic all the time.
C.It helps people prevent heart attack.
D.It affects human body systems'work positively
31.What may be the best title for text?
A.Who can benefit from music.
B.The best time to listen to music
C.The way to choose quality music.
D.How music affects our mind and body.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)is one of China's cultural symbols recognized
worldwide. It is a gem of Chinese civilization, and it has also made great contributions to
world civilization by improving people's health and promoting social progress.
There used to be a debate in China about whether TCM or Western medicine was better,
and arguments can still be heard today. But actually,TCM and western medicine are two
different medical theoretical systems that can not replace each other. In some aspects such as
surgery,Western medicine is better than TCM,but in other areas, such as recovery after
surgery and treatment of chronic diseases,TCM is more effective. This is why some Chinese
hospitals provide both TCM and Western medicine treatments.A combination of both has been

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短
文。
As humans, our longing for recognition can sometimes lead us to a wrong way, forcing us
to make regrettable decisions. This is a lesson I learned all too well because I made a wrong
decision for my strong desire to get attention.
My name is Vimukthi and at 15 years old,I did well in my studies yet longed for
popularity among my classmates.Despite my academic achievements,I felt unnoticed.Even
though my mother always told me to stay true to who I am and take advantage of my talents to
lift others, the desire to stand out consumed me,pushing me towards a serious mistake
Once,I heard someone talk about a faraway relative who worked a little in publishing. So
I decided to make up a story, hoping it would make me the center of attention.I boasted()
to my classmates that I had an uncle who was a famous writer.I told them he had many old
books with leather covers and an old typewriter.I called the typewriter anantique treasure".I
also made up the story of his new book called Shadowed Legends.
To my surprise, everyone believed it.At lunch, classmates came close to me and asked for
more information.I drew fake()signed book covers and put them on my desk. They
thought they were real.I even wrote letters and said they were from my uncle. The letters had
advice about writing, but I actually got the advice from our literature teacher,Mr.Jayasuriya.
For a week,I enjoyed the attention a lot.But lies are like weeds----they grow fast and hide the
truth. The more I lied, the harder it was to keep the story going.I felt stressed and guilty every
day.
One afternoon,Mr.Jayasuriya asked me to share"my uncle's"writing tips with the class.I
was fearful and spoke awkwardly,my face turning red.For the whole afternoon,I was anxious.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Mom sensed my nervousness that evening.
The next morning,I gathered my courage to tell the truth.
