At first, it was held every two years. However, starting from 1997, it has been held every year. It is now a large and growing international event. Perhaps, as a result of this, Edinburgh was named the first UNESCO City of Literature in 2004. The Book Festival runs in the last three weeks of August. The Festival’s home is the beautiful Charlotte Square Garden centrally located in Edinburgh’s historical New Town, which is a short walk from Princes Street. It’s a wonderful space to sit, think and play in. You can enjoy a relaxing atmosphere—see a favorite author, join in a workshop, enjoy a glass of wine or beer, or simply park yourself on the grass. There are over 700 events for both adults and children. They range from writing workshops, education events, discussions, to talks and performances by international writers, poets, musicians and thinkers.

Family-Friendly Things to Do in Texas
Search for shark bones in the Ladonia Fossil (化石) Park
In the Ladonia Fossil Park, visitors will find a woolly mammoth (猛犸), shark bones, and ancient stones between 145 and 65 million years ago. After a heavy rain, visitors can go through the mud for newly-appearing fossils. Consider bringing a tool to help free anything from the mud. You can take anything you find with you as long as it doesn’t have scientific importance.
Trace (追踪) the tracks of dinosaurs in the Paluxy riverbed
In the Dinosaur Valley State Park, kids can see some of the best-protected dinosaur tracks. Because the tracks are located in the riverbed, water sometimes covers them. Entry to the park is free of charge, but be sure to check the park’s website before visiting to find which trails are open and if the tracks are visible.
Go surfing in South Padre Island
Along Texas’ Gulf Coast, get into the water with the family and have surfing lessons given by professional coaches and former Hawaiian lifeguards, who teach all year round at Isla Blanca Beach. Soft surfboards are also for rent for those with excellent surfing skills to paddle out on their own.
Behold baby bats on their first flights at Bracken Cave Preserve
Mexican free-tailed bats appear in mass every evening from May to September at Bracken Cave Preserve. Bookings must be made ahead of time to visit, and you should plan to spend three hours on-site during the guided tours while waiting for the bats.
21. What can visitors do in the Ladonia Fossil Park?
A. Search for fossils after rain. B. Keep whatever they find.
C. Learn more about shark teeth. D. Purchase tools to dig up mammoths.

Despite the fact that motherhood has not been easy, Maxi Aubi believes that her son, Gianluca, has taught her much.
Gianluca was born 13 years ago with Angelman Syndrome, a genetic disease. Maxi was never afraid about the fact that she did not know what this condition was about. She had to get out there and face the music. “When he was a newborn baby, he used to cry all day long. He wouldn’t eat or sleep. It was an endless cycle. We ran some tests and doctors told us his progress depended on us. But it was evident that something was wrong with him. So we visited several doctors and ran some other tests until he was five,” she explains.
Despite all of this, Maxi designed a treatment plan for Gianluca. It did not matter what he was suffering from; she believed love was the “medicine” that could heal him. She formed a group of ten people of different ages outside her family who were willing to help Gianluca’s development. These people would come to her house in shifts from 9 AM to 7 PM with only one goal: to show Gianluca that he could achieve whatever he wanted. “We started encouraging him with games. During those two or three years, he learnt how to walk and he made huge progress,” she remembers.
Learning about her child’s diagnosis was a starting point for Maxi. To help relieve the pain of parents whose children suffered from the same condition, she created the Association for Parents coping with Angelman Syndrome (APSA) which currently has about a hundred families. Living with these children is very enriching. This is why the association is not only working to provide support and guidance for the families of children with this condition; it also wants to tell people that they can also learn from these children. “We want them to come and experience what we learnt from our children,” she says.

The world is full of the sounds of animals communicating with each other: birds singing, crickets chirping, whales singing songs in the deep. Until now animal “language” has been a mystery to humanity. But now, all that may change. As AI technology and machine learning develop into new fields and areas, scientists are using it to interpret animal language.
More than 50 years ago researchers recorded the beautiful songs of humpback whales (座头鲸) and shared them with the world, which opened up a whole new field of study: whale communication. As the technology advanced, so did the field.
Scientific American reports that there is the Earth Species Project: a team of AI scientists, biologists, and conservationists who are building a machine-learning model that uses data from a wide range of animals to figure out what their actions and sounds mean. In addition, there are projects that focus on only one particular species such as the Project Cetacean Translation Initiative (CETI) which hopes to translate the language of sperm whales using AI.
CETI hopes that if humans can understand what’s going on inside whales’ minds—and, eventually, the minds of other animals—it might inspire greater conservation measures. The group has good reason to believe it could. In the 1960s, when researchers discovered that humpback whales sing to each other, for instance, their work led to the wildly successful Save the Whales campaign. Seriously threatened for decades, humpback and gray whale populations started to recover.
Marine biologists and computer scientists worked together to analyze the most comprehensive database of whale sounds. They did a study to see if they could design a tailored machine learning program capable of spotting familiar sequences within these interactions, much as humans have recognizable conversational patterns. The result was a new kind of proceasing model able to anticipate what some whales might communicate next.
This kind of work isn’t limited to whales. Across the natural world, scientists are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence for help to understand the lives of animals.
28. How does the author present the issue of animal language?
A. By quoting an expert. B. By giving examples.
C. By defining a concept. D. By providing statistics.
29. What does the author try to explain by mentioning the discovery in the 1960s?
A. Whale populations continue to grow. B. The government supports whale study.
C. Research contributes to decision-making. D. Scientific study helps protective measures.
30. What is one of the researchers’ findings about whale communication?
A. Its content can be predicted. B. It follows traditional patterns.
C. Its frequency can be spotted. D. It has been copied by humans.
31. What is the best title of the text?
A. The AI Tools in Biological Research B. The Mystery of Whale Communication
C. Using AI to Interpret Animal Language D. The Ways of Translating Animal Language
B 29. D 30. A 31. C
根据文章第一段“The world is full of the sounds of animals communicating with each other: birds singing, crickets chirping, whales singing songs in the deep. (这个世界充满了动物相互交流的声音:鸟在歌唱,蟋蟀在啁啾,鲸鱼在深海唱歌。)”可推知,作者是通过举例提出动物语言的议题。故选B。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段首句中的“CETI hopes that if humans can understand what’s going on inside whales’ minds… it might inspire greater conservation measures. (CETI认为,如果人类能够了解鲸鱼以及其他动物的思想,这可能会激发更大的保护措施。)”和接着下文举例,在20世纪60年代,当研究人员发现座头鲸会互相唱歌时,他们的工作使“拯救鲸鱼”运动获得巨大成功。几十年来受到严重威胁的座头鲸和灰鲸的数量开始恢复。说明作者试图通过提及20世纪60年代的发现来解释科学研究有助于采取保护措施。故选D。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段最后一句“The result was a new kind of processing model able to anticipate what some whales might communicate next. (研究结果是一种新的处理模型,能够预测某些鲸鱼接下来可能交流的内容。)””可知,研究的结果是产生了一种新的处理模型,能够预测一些鲸鱼接下来可能交流的内容。所以研究者认为鲸鱼交流的内容是可预测的。故选A。
根据第一段“As AI technology and machine learning develop into new fields and areas, scientists are using it to interpret animal language. (随着人工智能技术和机器学习发展到新的领域和领域,科学家们正在利用它来解释动物的语言。)”及全文可知,全文围绕“利用人工智能解读动物语言”展开:开头指出动物语言曾是谜团,如今AI可能改变这一现状;中间介绍CETI项目,说明技术如何被用于分析动物声音;结尾提到该研究不仅限于鲸鱼,而是正在扩展到更多动物。故选C。
D
Thwaites is the widest glacier (冰川) in the world. It holds 480,000 km of ice. Right now, it’s losing about 80 km per year. And its ice loss continues to speed up as the world warms. If Thwaites were to break down, it would send out enough ice to cause disastrous sea-level rise worldwide. And even if humans stop producing climate-warming gases in the near future, this still might not prevent a breakdown.
So a few scientists are studying whether glacial engineering could prevent or delay the sea-level rise. Slawek Tulaczyk, a glaciologist, is one of the people pushing for this to happen. “Maybe the conclusion will be that we should not do it, or that we won’t be able to do it,” he says. But he believes that scientists should at least look into the possibility.
Tulaczyk has long thought about engineering ice flows. In the 1990s, he studied a coastal site in West Antarctica, nearly 1,200 kilometers east of Thwaites. Six huge glaciers flowed off that coastline. Most of them slid 300 to 700 meters forward each year. But scientists found that one, the Kamb Ice Stream, flowed only two percent that fast. Kamb had once moved as quickly as the others. Then, some 150 years ago, it almost stopped.
A thin layer of liquid water lies under most glaciers, which lets them slide over rough beds of stone smoothly. That water comes from a slow melting (融化) of ice on the glacier’s bottom. It melts because of the heat of friction (摩擦) and the heat that comes out of the ground from deep in the Earth.
Tulaczyk and some others thought a loss of this water layer might have slowed Kamb. Like a river jumping its banks, that water seemed to have moved elsewhere. By the late 2000s, Tulaczyk was wondering if it might be possible to slow other glaciers by copying what happened at Kamb. He imagined drilling holes through a glacier and taking out the water below. This might eventually freeze the glacier to its bed, stopping the ice from moving for years or centuries.
Tulaczyk and others warn that glacial engineering would never be a silver bullet. Even if it saves Thwaites or other glaciers in Antarctica, it may not protect glaciers in the Arctic, where temperatures are warmer.
32. What is Tulaczyk’s opinion on preventing the sea-level rise?
A. It is totally impossible.
B. Glacial engineering is the only way.
C. Humans must act to remove greenhouse gases.
D. Doing something is better than never trying.
33. Why did the Kamb Ice Stream flow more slowly?
A. It was located in a colder region. B. It was almost frozen to the seabed.
C. The glacier melted at a slower speed. D. The water layer beneath it disappeared.
34. How did Tulaczyk propose to stop glaciers flowing?
A. By filling freezing air through holes. B. By forcing them to jump their banks.
C. By removing the water under glaciers. D. By building barriers to block their movement.
35. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. A newfound glacier in Antarctica.
B. A potential approach to slowing the sea-level rise.
C. The effects of climate change on Arctic glaciers.
D. The history of glacial research in the 20th century.
D 33. D 34. C 35. B
根据第二段中““Maybe the conclusion will be that we should not do it, or that we won’t be able to do it,” he says. But he believes that scientists should at least look into the possibility (他说:‘也许结论是我们不应该这么做,或者我们做不到。’但他认为,科学家至少应该研究一下这种可能性)”可知,Tulaczyk认为即使最后发现不能通过冰川工程来防止或延缓海平面上升,但至少应该尝试去研究,可推理出Tulaczyk认为做点什么总比从不尝试要好。故选D项。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“A thin layer of liquid water lies under most glaciers, which lets them slide over rough beds of stone smoothly. (大多数冰川下面都有一层薄薄的液态水,这使得冰川能够顺利地在粗糙的石床上滑动。)”、第五段中“Tulaczyk and some others thought a loss of this water layer might have slowed Kamb.(Tulaczyk和其他一些人认为,这层水的流失可能减缓了Kamb冰流的速度)”以及“Like a river jumping its banks, that water seemed to have moved elsewhere.(就像河水漫过河岸一样,那些水似乎流到了别处)”可知,Kamb冰流流速变慢是因为其下面的水层消失了。
根据第五段中“He imagined drilling holes through a glacier and taking out the water below. This might eventually freeze the glacier to its bed, stopping the ice from moving for years or centuries.(他设想在冰川上钻孔,取出下面的水。这最终可能会将冰川冻结在基底上,使冰在数年或数个世纪内停止移动)”可知,Tulaczyk提出通过移除冰川下的水来阻止冰川流动。故选C项。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中“And even if humans stop producing climate-warming gases in the near future, this still might not prevent a breakdown(即使人类在不久的将来停止排放导致气候变暖的气体,这一过程仍可能无法阻止该冰川的崩溃)”、第二段“So a few scientists are studying whether glacial engineering could prevent or delay the sea-level rise.(因此,一些科学家正在研究冰川工程是否可以防止或延缓海平面上升)”、第五段中“He imagined drilling holes through a glacier and taking out the water below. This might eventually freeze the glacier to its bed, stopping the ice from moving for years or centuries.(他设想在冰川上钻孔,取出下面的水。这最终可能会将冰川冻结在基底上,使冰在数年或数个世纪内停止移动)”以及最后一段“Tulaczyk and others warn that glacial engineering would never be a silver bullet. Even if it saves Thwaites or other glaciers in Antarctica, it may not protect glaciers in the Arctic, where temperatures are warmer(图拉奇克等人警告称,冰川工程永远都不会是万能良策。即使它能挽救思韦茨冰川或南极洲的其他冰川,也可能无法保护北极地区的冰川——那里的气温更高)”可知,文章主要介绍了科学家Slawek Tulaczyk正在研究是否可以通过冰川工程来防止或延缓海平面上升,也就是介绍了一种减缓海平面上升的潜在方法。故选B项。

Joyce is in the fourth grade and he joined the noisy children of his class as usual. “Children! Silence!” Mangat Madam suddenly entered the class. She announced next week would be math week. “I’d like each of you to work on a project. You could do it individually or in a group.” She instructed. “The topic for the project needs approving tomorrow and it has to be displayed at the math week exhibition. The best project will be awarded and there is also a surprise gift from my side,” she added.
Joyce, who is extremely good at math, sat in the corner seat of the first bench with Karan , an average. Karan asked Joyce if they could work on the math project together. Joyce replied in a prideful tone, "Ha-ha you want to join me. I think I will do the project on my own.” Joyce wanted to get awarded and the surprise gift all for himself from Mangat Madam.
After deep consideration, Joyce decided to work on a math magic quiz on the circuit board (电路板). The next day in school, Mangat Madam arrived in the classroom and all the children submitted their topics for the math exhibition. They all chose to work in a group except Joyce. In the following days, Joyce gathered all the materials for the project such as wires, bulbs (灯泡), a switch and a thin plywood board (胶合板). He worked out a few mathematical basic operations (运算) to be fixed on the board so that when the wire of the circuit touched the right answer, the bulb glowed. Joyce completed the project and was happy with the result.
The evening before the exhibition, while packing his school bags, Joyce again checked the project to see if it was working fine. Alas! All the lights that were to glow did not seem to light at all. Without finding the reason, Joyce was tensed up. However, he decided to take the same project to the school as he couldn’t change the topic at the last minute. Then came the next day, and everybody was fascinated by the exhibition.

It was Joyce’s turn to display his project. Making his way to the platform with heavy steps, Joyce placed all the materials for his project well and began to conduct his math magic quiz on the circuit board. He prayed in his heart that his lights would glow again but in vain. Hearing other students whispering to each other, Joyce’s face flushed with shame. He ducked his head and stepped back to his seat. And then Karan’s team showed their project. With joint efforts, they made it.
Finally, the teacher announced Karan’s team was the winner. All the children burst into thunderous applause on hearing that. Karan and his partners walked up to the front with great excitement. They were awarded and also received the surprise gift from Mangat Madam. After class, Joyce approached Karan, expressed admiration for his team’s project and congratulated them on their success sincerely. That day Joyce learnt the biggest lesson of his life: it is always better to work as a team rather than working alone.

24. According to the text, Maxi Aubi ________.
A. knew much about Angelman Syndrome
B. suffered from a genetic illness
C. cried a lot about her son’s suffering
D. made a treatment plan for her son
25. What does the underlined phrase “face the music” in the second paragraph probably mean?
A. Enjoy the music. B. Accept the situation.
C. Finish one’s work. D. Share the burden.
26. What can we learn about Gianluca from the text?
A. He taught his mother a lot about Angelman Syndrome.
B. He liked playing games with people.
C. He made great progress because of love.
D. He ate and slept well when he was a baby.
27. According to the text, the ten people in the group ________.
A. visited Maxi’s house in turn
B. were Maxi’s relatives and friends
C were hired by his mother to take care of Gianluca
D. were doctors contributing to the treatment of rare diseases

The evening before the exhibition while packing his school bags, Joyce again checked the project to see if it was working fine.
