Does adventure have an age limit? Two close friends have given a negative answer to the question. Ellie Hamby and Sandy Hazelip, both at the age of 81, inspired by Jules Verne’s novel Around the World in 80 Days, are on a mission to see all seven continents in just over two and a half months.
Their first stop was a location that was not easily accessible to even many experienced travelers: Antarctica. Getting to the southernmost continent first required crossing the Drake Passage, the famously rough waters. “For almost two days, we were rocking and rolling and slipping and sliding through the Drake Passage. It was just wild,” Hamby said. “But when we stepped foot on the ground of the Antarctic, we forgot all of that. The beauty of the Antarctic is just unbelievable — just breath-taking.”
Over the past three months, the pair have ridden camels in Egypt, met elephants in Bali, and observed the Northern Lights in Finland. For Hamby, the best part of the trip was not the beauty along the way. “We love all the sights that we saw, but the things that we remember the most are the people that we met,” she said. “We met some of the kindest and friendliest people in the world. We just have friends now all over the world.”
When it came to how their families felt about their journey, Hamby said her daughter Louise was not too concerned. “She just says, ‘Well, if Mom falls out of a hot air balloon in Egypt or off of the mountain ... That’s fine. She’s living the life she wanted to live, and I’m happy for her,’” Hamby said.
Hazelip hopes their story can inspire people of all ages. “Don’t sit in that chair and waste away,” Hazelip said. “Ellie has this wonderful saying; it goes ‘the world is a book and he who does not travel only reads one page’. So get up out of that easy chair, step out of your comfort zone, make some plans and live. Remember that age is only a number.”
4. Which words can best describe Hamby and Hazelip’s journey to Antarctica?
A. Adventurous but wonderful. B. Boring and uneventful.
C. Well-planned and smooth. D. Romantic but fruitless.
5. What was the most unforgettable part of the trip for Hamby?
A. Seeing beautiful scenes. B. Meeting wonderful people.
C. Experiencing different cultures. D. Having her best friend’s company.
6. What was Louise’s attitude to her mother’s journey?
A. Uncertain. B. Indifferent. C. Supportive. D. Concerned.
7. What message does Hazelip most want to give us?
A. It’s never too old to learn.
B. A friend for life is a friend indeed.
C. Seeing the world is not a must for the old.
D. It’s never too late to live life to the fullest.

About 63% of teenagers say they use social media every day, while 45% say they are on the internet “almost all the time” according to the Pew Research Center, which carried out a 2022 study including interviews with 743 teenagers. And while research has found that social media can negatively (消极地) influence teenagers, there are many positive effects (影响), as well. Here’s what experts say about how social media is influencing teens.
For starters, studies have suggested that some teenagers are losing sleep because of social media use at night, and some can’t focus on studies because of it during the school day. But there may be even further negative effects on mental health. Linda Charmaraman, a senior research scientist, has found that 21% of teens “felt down” about themselves after looking at social media. More than half of those teens reported that the feeling was related to their bodies.
Charmaraman says groups who were easily influenced by this were females, those with large online peer networks, those who often checked their social media, and those who followed famous persons. She says, “social media has introduced new risks: teens can now harm (伤害) or be harmed by others online.”
However, according to the study, 31% of teens say that social media use has a “mostly positive” influence on their lives, while only 24% say “mostly negative”. The other 45% said that social media’s effect was neither positive nor negative. In fact, more than half of teens in this study reported giving and receiving emotional support online. This can be especially important for teens who have an illness or dealing with bad feelings.
“If parents are worried about their teens’ social media use, they should talk with them about how social media is making them feel,” Charmaraman says. Besides, it’s important that parents model these best practices in their own social media use. “If you really care about it, get direction from a mental health expert.”
8. How does the author present the findings of the study?
A. By telling stories. B. By giving examples. C. By asking questions. D. By listing numbers.
9. Which of the following will Charmaraman most probably agree with?
A. Social media has brought new challenges. B. Males are easily influenced by social media.
C. Social media’s influence was mostly positive. D. Most teens feel down because of social media use.
10. What are the worried parents advised to do?
A. Reduce their social media use. B. Look for expert help.
C. Help their teens with studies. D. Give their teens emotional support.
11. What can be a best title for the text?
A. The Reason Why Social Media Is Not All Bad. B. Teens Need to Care about Their Health.
C. How Social Media Is Influencing Teens. D. Parents Are Anxious about Their Teens’ Health.
D
If you lack time to exercise during the working week, don’t worry. A study of nearly 90,000 participants in the UK suggests that putting all your weekly exercise on weekends still has significant health benefits compared with being inactive. In this study, participants who cram all their recommended weekly physical activity into one or two days are referred to as “weekend warriors”.
The researchers collected data from 89,573 volunteers by requiring them to wear a wrist device (手腕设备) to track their weekly physical activity. These participants were then divided into three groups based on their exercise patterns (模式): regular exercisers, who spread their exercise throughout the week; weekend warriors, who did most of their exercise in one day or two; and inactive participants. After grouping the participants, the researchers compared their health records to examine the related health benefits.
The study found that, compared with those who were inactive, weekend warriors and regular exercisers experienced similar health benefits, with both groups having a lower risk of developing more than 200 diseases. Specifically, the strongest effects were for cardiometabolic diseases. Both groups had a 20%lower risk of high blood pressure and a 40%lower risk of diabetes.
Dr. Shaan Khurshid, a cardiologist at Massachusetts general hospital in Boston, who led the study, said, “It shows that, for health benefits, it’s really the amount of physical activity rather than its frequency that matters. The key is, however you are going to get that amount, do it in the way that works for you.”
Khurshid also mentioned the need for more research to explore whether the “weekend warrior” workout pattern could help people reach their activity goals more easily. “It might be more convenient for some people and help them follow public health advice better,” he said.
12. What does the underlined word “cram” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Pack. B. Break. C. Divide. D. Turn.
13. How did the researchers test the health benefits in the three groups?
A. By checking their physical health. B. By comparing their health records.
C. By reviewing their exercise records. D. By examining their workout patterns.
14. According to Dr. Khurshid what is more important for health benefits?
A. How often you exercise each week. B. How long you exercise each time.
C. How much exercise you do each week D. How much effort you put into exercise.
15. What can we infer about the “weekend warrior” workout pattern?
A. It follows public health advice.
B. It might suit people with busy schedules.
C. It could help people reach their workout goals.
D. It will soon be promoted as the best exercise plan.

Mr. Smith, the headteacher, noticed his unhappiness. One Friday afternoon, the teacher walked to him and said, “Tom, I’ve noticed that you’ve been a bit down lately. Is there anything wrong? Are you willing to share your feelings with me?” Hesitating (犹豫) for a moment, Tom said in a low voice, “I just can’t fit in here. I miss my parents and old friends so much, and it seems that I have little in common with the classmates here.” They talked for a long time that afternoon.
The next Monday, it was time for the class to change seats as usual and the headteacher asked Jack, an outgoing and helpful boy, to sit next to Tom. Jack said cheerfully, “I’d like to make friends with you.” Tom was amazed by Jack’s friendly offer, but soon felt a wave of warmth flowing through his heart.

Khurshid, what is more important for health benefits?
A. How often you exercise each week. B. How long you exercise each time.
C. How much exercise you do each week D. How much effort you put into exercise.
15. What can we infer about the “weekend warrior” workout pattern?
A It follows public health advice.
B. It might suit people with busy schedules.
C. It could help people reach their workout goals.
D. It will soon be promoted as the best exercise plan.

I’m writing to express my thanks for the wonderful learning experience in your oral English class this semester Your interactive teaching methods and the different topics you introduced have greatly improved my spoken English and increased my confidence.
For the next semester, I suggest involving more group discussion activities. This would not only provide us with more opportunities to practice speaking but also help us learn from each other’s ideas and views. Additionally, it could be beneficial to have occasional guest speakers to share real-world experiences related to English communication, which would make the class more engaging and practical.

In class, he often felt lonely among his classmates, always lost in his own thoughts. As a result, he became increasingly unhappy and his learning performance began to get worse.
